Rudolph Valentino died in New York on August 23, 1926. The next day, crowds filled the streets outside the Frank E. Campbell funeral home at Broadway and 66th St. during his memorial service. Valentino lay in state for several days and thousands of mourners rioted, smashed windows, and fought with police to get a glimpse of the deceased matinee idol. Standing guard by the coffin were four Fascists, allegedly sent by Italian leader Benito Mussolini but in fact hired by Frank Campbell’s press agent.

A portraitist sees flesh quantitatively, like a butcher.
In the course of professionally seeing flesh the artist may come to know desire, but his job is to look past what he knows to what he only sees: flesh’s light and color and shape.
