Inside the box is a ball of tissue paper, carefully wound around a much smaller, more fragile item. Kaoru uncovers it gingerly, layer by layer, suddenly conscious of the way Kojiro is watching him with clear and too serious eyes. When the final piece is gone, what’s left in his fingers is a hair pin, barely two inches in length and so delicate that it looks like he could bend it in half if he’d wanted to.

The way Kaoru’s breath catches as the light glints off the metal could almost be considered a gasp.

“They never last long, do they?” Kojiro muses. “I thought, this way, you could keep at least one around.”

There is a tiny flower cast at the end of the pin, each of its five petals curving slightly inward around a cluster of delicate stamen made in the same, shining gold.

Outside, the trees are still bare.

Kaoru runs his finger along the edges of the petals, suddenly overwhelmed by the feeling of warmth spreading through his stomach. It only intensifies when he tears his gaze away from the gift and finally looks up into Kojiro’s eyes.

Once, during one of their particularly petty arguments, Kojiro had kicked Kaoru’s board out from underneath him mid ride. The momentum had knocked him flat onto his back, evacuating the air immediately from his lungs with the impact.

The way Kojiro is looking at him, now, feels exactly the same.

It’s why Kaoru’s voice is still caught somewhere in his throat when he finally manages to speak. “What… what am I supposed to do with this?”

“Put it in your hair?”

“Do I look like the kind of person that wears barrettes? This is for a little girl.”

“So what? I saw it and it made me think of you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kaoru snaps, but there a soft blush spread across his features, he can tell by just how cold the air from the open window feels against the skin of his cheekbones.

“That you should shut up and say thank you. Here, give it to me.”

“What are you—“

“Just sit still, would you?”

Ending their relationship was supposed to allow them both to grow - to find who they are separate from each other. For as long as Kaoru can remember, he and Kojiro have come as a matching set. They’ve been inseparable since kindergarten, growing closer as the years went by until Kojiro kissed him under the full moon on the way home from S and best friends merged with boyfriends.

Simply put, Kaoru has never known a life without Kojiro in it. And Kojiro had never known a life without Kaoru.

And okay, yes, it was Kaoru’s idea to end things. He was the one who insisted they learn to live without the other. And when Kojiro had argued they could do that just fine in a long distance relationship because with him in Italy and Kaoru in Tokyo, they would have to learn to live without the other, Kaoru had shut him down.

So yes. This is entirely his fault. He wanted to teach himself to live without Kojiro because he’d gotten to the point where the thought of being without him made him physically ill, and if there’s one thing Kaoru doesn’t want to be labelled as, it’s clingy.

But now here he is, stewing in anger as Kojiro struts into S with the same bleach-blonde ditz on his arm that he went home with last week. Jealous is the other label he never wanted attached to him, because jealous means too clingy means Kaoru got too attached.

(Means Kaoru made the wrong decision in ending things.)

Kojiro laughs at something Blondie says, and Kaoru’s stomach twists uncomfortably. Jealousy threatens to force its way up his throat and he wonders if maybe he should just go home.

He’d told Kojiro they needed to learn to live without each other, and Kojiro has done just that, so Kaoru can’t even get mad at him. Not really.

He is mad. He’s seething, jealousy eating away at him, rotting his intestines, and he wants nothing more than to smash Blondie’s face in.

But he’s mostly just mad at himself. Because Kojiro looks happy which means Kaoru made the right choice - the right choice for Kojiro, not the right choice for himself. More than anything, he wants Kojiro to be happy. Even if that means Kaoru standing on the sidelines, watching him hold some girl he doesn’t know the name of the same way he used to hold Kaoru.

(Kojiro’s always been one to show his love big and loud, and Kaoru wouldn’t let him do that unless they were alone. Is he happier this way - with someone he can show off to the crowds? Someone who doesn’t shut him down and push him away if they’re not in the safety of isolation?)

(Kaoru hopes not.)

He wants Kojiro to be happy, yes, regardless of what that happiness means for himself. But the vindictive part of his heart is always going to hope that no one makes Kojiro quite as happy as he was when he was with Kaoru.

He wants Kojiro to be happy, but he doesn’t want anyone else Kojiro ever gets involved with to make him happier than Kaoru did.

Matchablossom aristocats AU

In which Kaoru is a sheltered house cat hybrid belonging to an old woman, keeping her entertained with music and his calligraphy. Together with his adopted kittens Miya and Langa they live rather peacefully until one day the butler Adam decides to drug the hybrid family of three and tries to drown them in the lake.

Cherry and his kittens survive however and are soon found by Joe the alley cat and his Protegé, a street kitten named Reki. Even tho Joe and Cherry do not get along at first, the green haired hybrid decides to help the housecats find their way back home.
