With everything that is happening, I wanted to know how you are all doing? There is always something going on but it actually feels good pausing to ask how other people are doing. ( I am waiting for your comments)
I have been trying to enjoy the present and create a life that I enjoy living. I have never been so excited about my classes and stressed (a good one). It is too bad that it does not necessarily mean that will get good grades. I do not necessarily about care about getting excellent grades anymore especially if it comes at the expense of my mental and physical health.
I just want to get ‘good’ grades and move on with my life.
Today I learned that at my new uni, student assistant jobs are actually publicly announced - i.e. they will put up ads with job offers and then students can actually! apply?! for a student assistant job?! as in, people send in their CVs and stuff and then they hold?!!! job interviews!! it’s almost like they want to give out student assistant positions according to merit?!
That’s WILD. Cause at my old uni, student assistant jobs were NEVER advertised publicly. There was no way of applying. Professors just asked students they liked and gave them the positions. Merit didn’t really enter into it cause it depended so much on sympathy and sheer dumb luck (i.e. if a professor had a vacant position but you didn’t take a class with him that semester? Well tough luck, no chance of getting the job even if you’re qualified, cause he’s already asked some girl who was in his class, etc.)
I can’t get over the fact that they actually treat student assistant positions like REGULAR NORMAL JOBS WHICH YOU CAN APPLY FOR here. Wild.
So last time I updated you all on my grad school journey, I was rejected from a PhD at my current school. I figured now, more than 2 months later, is a good time for an update.
I ultimately applied to 4 schools (my current university, Brock; York University; University of Guelph and University of Toronto/Ontario Institute of Studies in Education). I organized my applications in my Notion database, including my files for each application. As you can see from the database screenshot below...
... ya girl got an acceptance! I haven’t made my final decision as to whether or not I will accept the offer (due to financial circumstances), but it’s fairly likely that I will accept.
I was at the point in my grad school journey when I was trying to come to terms with ending school after my master’s and trying to reconcile my feelings about myself and the 3 rejections.
I’m still trying to separate my value and purpose from my productivity, but I’ll be honest, the acceptance feels pretty good. Now, I just have to finish my thesis by the end of August and I’m in!
If anyone has any tips or resources for new PhD students, I would certainly appreciate them!
Does literally anyone who follows me know Chicago Style?
I know how to do a reference sheet, I just don’t know how to style annotations that accompany the references. I’ve looked online but there’s like 5 different examples and none come from the official site.
I know I’ve been pretty inactive lately on this page, but I wanted to talk about one of the reasons why! In August, I started working on my Master’s degree(!!!) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, which believe it or not, takes a whole lot of time. I’m an online student for 51 weeks every year, but for one week in October, I get to go on campus for an intensive residency where we get to practice our counseling skills with each other in person!
This is a picture of me at my school, Adler University. Adler is a really great school because not only does it promote Adlerian values, but it is also heavily involved in social justice and encourages (even requires) students to be social justice workers and advocates. As stated in their mission statement, “We are out to change the world for the better.”
My Master’s orientation started yesterday, and I’m getting so very excited to finally be starting this program!
On another note, does anyone out there have any advice about doing graduate work online? My BA was an on-campus program so I’m a little nervous about switching to the online format. Any tips would be appreciated!
