tomorrow I go back to class for my second year at university !! I'm so excited !! also happy october everybody! (vent about masters applications below:)
but I know that it's going to get REAL very quickly bc I'm already overwhelmed by my workload... in addition to normal uni work, I will also be attending virtual uni open days as this time next year I will be submitting my masters applications......... what?????? ive already started to narrow down my options and do a lot of research bc I know that now and the Christmas break are the only times that I'll have to do this before I have to start writing the applications???? bc I'll be too busy during term and the summer to even think about thinking about thoughts like ?? WHAT??? I was a fresher two minutes ago and now I'm booking postgrad open days like hello???? what???? but I can't say I don't love it because it's soooopo exciting and I love my subject. I'm also aiming more ambitiously in terms of the universities I'll be applying for (will have safeties ofc) so that's VERY motivating. so yeah !! eeeee!!!!!

Life update, a.a. 2023-24
If you've been following this blog for the last few months, you probably know that I was planning to take a gap year after graduating, in order to do an internship in Berlin.
Well, my plans have changed completely.
First of all, I won't be taking a gap year. There will be no internship abroad. I will be immediately enrolling in my master's degree on European and Angloamerican Literature and Languages. In fact, lectures start on Monday.
It was a suffered decision. But I came to the conclusion that a gap year would simply delay what I truly want: freedom from academia. A permanent job abroad. Independency. Having a master's degree is almost a requirement for all this. Might as well get it done as soon as possible.
The plan for this first semester is to graduate from my bachelor's in December (currently writing the dissertation), get my driver's license AND take as many exams as I can during the winter exam season. It's going to be busy.
After that, it's all a big interrogative point. I plan on applying to various scholarships to study abroad. If everything goes well, I will attend a summer class in Germany, but we'll see how that works out.
I'll write another post with the list of the courses I'll be taking this semester as soon as my schedule is confirmed. Thank you for reading so far, and for always supporting me :)

Job hunt or hunting myself?
I am graduating really soon, like in a few months, it's kind of getting to me now, I know it's all excuses but managing my on campus part-time, finishing assignments on time, cooking and feeding myself has become so overwhelming , I need to look for jobs, network, optimize my resume, and ton of other work, but I am not getting any of it done! I am being so futile and motivation-less from past weeks, scrolling insta and wasting time is the only thing that I am actually doing all day.
any one who is going through this same stuff? any suggestions?

a little bit of my ~ plant science 🌱 ~ lab work aesthetic!
The results aren't all what I wanted, but I'm loving this project anyway, and I think my dissertation will be okay even if only discussing why things didn't work! 😅

Who am I?
During my time as a bachelor student in Liberal Arts and Sciences at University College Utrecht in the Netherlands, I was largely exposed to concepts I understood but had no names for. Growing up on a post-colonial island in a British educational institute, we were often fed the phrase "you were part of an empire" rather than the correct phrasing "you were colonized". This perspective shift was an important one that introduced me to the value of restructuring language to better represent reality. It introduced me to one of my major interests, editing language to ensure the intention runs through from the writer to the audience well and accurately. My investment in human rights issues grew from simply there to something I understood.
Also during this time, I took an elective introducing geology and environmental science, which shook me to the core. I fell in love with the textbook, the way it read and how the information that seemed so dull – rocks and tectonics and groundwater – proved to be so entertaining and exciting. The earth below me came alive and so followed my interest. I finished my degree with courses in Earth & environment, literature and global health. My bachelor thesis was an attempt to communicate the interdisciplinary truth of Aruba's gold mine industry, to maybe better introduce the non-geologist to how even the rocks below them were used by the colonial presences to control and alter the people and the land.
Every concern is interdisciplinary, every existence is intersectional, and to simplify it to its parts, belittles the truth of the whole. We must work together from multiple angles if we wish to repair, restructure, regenerate for a more optimistic future.
This academic experience was precious, albeit complicated. An interdisciplinary degree greatly prepared me for life but less so for qualifying in strictly STEM master's, as such I am returning to a bachelor setting, now in the US, to deepen my scientific background so that I may proceed down the path I have discovered is right for me. I will be a science communicator. In some ways, you may think of this as curating content to a standard that may be consumed by a greater range of people. Science belongs to us all, so to all it must be shared with. My aim is to establish myself as a communicator, as a vessel to carry meaning and to play my role in society.
As simplistic as it may seem, we have two outcomes as we are now. We either survive or we don't. We must actively put effort into regeneration and restoration, because to consume would be to accept that what has been lost is not worth being found. I am someone who believes, who hopes, that we can work collectively and collaboratively to improve the state of the world for us all, from the smallest sapling to the largest mammal.

With starting my masters, I feel a bit like being back to school, I just got used to being a bachelor student where hundreds of people attend courses and everything is anonymous but now we barely fill a school class, its so weird and honestly scary, I dont want the professors and all fellow students to know my face/name😂😬
I feel like you probably also just cant go anymore as often as you like, because your absence will stand out more😭

Mid-Summer Update
Hey, everyone! I know it's been forever since I've been here, but I have big news! I am applying to graduate school!
I have moved to South Carolina with my family and after being rejected this past VMCAS cycle, I've decided to get my master's degree from Clemson university since it is nearby. Feel free to follow me on this journey!

there's no greater betrayal than finally starting to read a book you've had sitting for months on your shelf or your desk or your nightstand and then finding out it's bad. like. i gave you a fucking home.

I'm curious. what job would you do if money was no object (you just automatically had an income you could live comfortably on)? including work like volunteering, studying etc. please share in the tags :)
