CW: Discussions of kissing consent and corporate censorship of queer storytelling
Marvel, your 2022 Pride issue has some great stories. The debut of Escapade is wonderful and I am really excited to see more with her in the future!!!
But um.
Tumblr media
This is bad, Marvel.
For context, the back of the book contains bios of various queer heroes, including Viv Vision... and it mentions Viv and Riri's kiss as a moment that "taught Viv about consent."
For context, this is the kiss that was supposed to lead to Viv and Riri dating, but Marvel editorial stepped in and stopped it from becoming canon, instead leading to Riri awkwardly friendzoning Viv as well as a few panels in the following Champions series where Riri tells Viv not to kiss people without explicit permission.
Tumblr media
[ID: A Twitter user tweets “Jim Zub still hasn’t explained this” with an image from the Champions of Viv Vision and Riri Williams recreating the upside-down Spider-Man and MJ scene. Jim Zub responds with a link to an older tweet of his where he notes how “Sometimes you have romantic plans for a story and they get vetoed partway through. If you read a comic by me and wondered why a clear romantic thread just seemed to end for no apparent reason... yeah... maybe that wasn’t my choice? Maybe, just maybe, it hurts me too.”]
Marvel? No. You don't get to claim in your literal Pride issue that your stopping queer storytelling was actually just a woke PSA about consent being good the entire time. It wasn’t a PSA; it was damage control after setting up a clear and standard superhero romance arc and that story being vetoed by corporate.
And to be clear: I do think stories about kissing consent should be more present in media. I also think Viv could be a fun character to explore that sort of thing with. She is a character who is very easily influenced by things and so I could see an arc where her definition of “romance” is entirely formed by RomCom cliches, leading to her just annoying her partner. She could be a good person to tell a story about consent and setting boundaries in your relationship; that just isn’t what the story of VivHeart was and it’s frustrating to see this sort of rewriting of history in a literal Pride issue.
Now, I don’t need Vivheart to become canon. I know Viv is getting an Infinity Comic soon; I can handle her having a new love interest and this ship fading into a What-If that only cameos in the background of It’s Jeff! comics. But fucking hell, Marvel. Don’t pretend it was never supposed to happen.
