My Soulmate
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader
Summary: After years of not knowing your soulmate you finally find him.
Word Count: 1.232
A/N: Hey everyone! This has been in my drafts for a while now and this is my first time writing for a soulmate AU, so I hope you like it!
Masterlist
In the world you live, people believe in soulmates, not only do they believe in soulmates. They are real! Because when you are in the same room as your soulmate you get a tattoo with his or her initials on your wrist. Some people get them when they are 5 years, some when they are 13 years, some with 18 and then there is you who still hasn’t gotten yours. Every day you see people with their soulmate being happy and your friends ask you so often if you have one but you always have to shake your head and say no. After so many years of hoping that you’ll find yours, you started to think that maybe you don’t have one. Or maybe your soulmate lives in another country or died. Or maybe your soulmate wouldn’t like you? Everything is possible you thought. So many different scenarios were going through your head at some days. But what you didn’t know was that you’ll meet your soulmate very soon.
It started as a normal day. Before work you drove to your favorite coffee shop to pick up a coffee to go and drive to work. You walked in and ordered your coffee.
“Like always?” The friendly worker asked, and you nodded. While you waited for your coffee, you looked around and saw a few familiar faces but also two guys with caps and glasses on you haven’t seen before. You didn’t know why but they looked like they didn’t want to get recognized. You took a closer look at the blonde one and he kinda looked familiar, but you didn’t know why. Then you could see how the guy with the blonde hair showed the other one with brown hair something on his phone. Then you heard him laughing and wow he had a beautiful smile you thought.
“Your coffee is ready y/n.” You turned around and looked away from these two handsome men.
“Thank you.” You said with a smile and turned around. When you walked out you walked past the men, and the brown haired one smiled at you. You smiled back and said “Hi” to him. Then you walked out to your car. In your car you took a sip from your coffee and then started to drive away. While driving you somehow looked at your wrist and saw three initials on it.
“Oh my god.” You said to yourself and looked back at the street again. Then you looked for a parking lot and saw one near you. After you parked the car, you took a closer look of your tattoo.
J.B.B.
Who could that be? How long do you have it? It must have happened when you were in the coffee shop, right? But there were only people who were there often and who you knew. Wait! You took a deep breath. There were two guys that you saw for the first time. It had to be one of those guys! But who? And what is his name?
You couldn’t believe that you just really found your soulmate! But how can you see him again? Will you even ever see him again?
Your mind started to go crazy with so many questions going through your head. When you suddenly realized why you where there. You were about to drive to work. You looked at your clock and saw that you only have a few minutes left. You looked at the tattoo for the last time. And when you ran your finger over the initials a smile escaped you.
“J.B.B.” You whispered to yourself and smiled.
Your best friend from work immediately knew that something happened when she saw your smile. You showed her your wrist and told her that you think that it must be one of those guys you saw. She said that she will try to help you find him, but you only knew how he looked like and his initials. It’s nearly impossible to find him. But your friend assured you that you will find him.
The same time you found your tattoo was also the same time Bucky discovered his. He couldn’t believe what he saw. He thought he didn’t have one, especially after Hydra. Or that you lived back in the 40s and he couldn’t meet you because of what had happened. Bucky showed it to Steve, and he got so excited for his best friend because he knew how Bucky was feeling about it. For Bucky it was even harder to guess who you could be because he never went to that coffee shop before, and it could be anyone there. But somehow Bucky always had to think of you. He only saw you for a few seconds, but he remembered you with your beautiful smile and the shy little “hi” you said to him. Bucky went back to that coffee shop almost every day in the hope to find you there. You two always missed each other sometimes only for a few minutes. But Bucky didn’t give up.
Days and even weeks passed, and you didn’t see your soulmate again. But you didn’t lose hope that you will find him again. You walked into the coffee shop like almost every day and ordered your coffee. Then you went back to your car, you wanted to drive home after that hard day at work. You were about to open the car door when suddenly someone behind you shouted.
“Hey, I think you dropped something.” You heard and turned around. You couldn’t believe who you saw, it was the brown haired one, you saw weeks ago. The one who could be your soulmate. He was holding your bracelet in his hand.
“Oh, yes that’s mine. Thank you so much.” You said while he walked over to you.
“No problem.” He said and smiled at you.
“Oh, hey it’s you.” Bucky said with excitement when he got near you.
“You remember me?”
“Of course, I do. How could I forget that beautiful smile.” Bucky said and made you blush.
“Oh, your bracelet.” Bucky held out your bracelet.
“Would you put it on me, please.”
“Sure.” When Bucky put it on your wrist you noticed that his left arm was of a black metal. You didn’t have much time to think about that because then he started to introduce himself.
“I’m Bucky Barnes.” Wait? Bucky Barnes? You must have heard of him before.
“Do…you maybe have a second name too?” You nervously asked and he looked kinda confused why you wanted to know that.
“I have, but why-” Bucky got nervous, so you decided to tell him why.
“Because my name is Y/n l/n.” You said and then showed Bucky the tattoo on your wrist. He looked at the tattoo and then back to you. Then Bucky turned his right arm to you, and you saw your name on it.
“You are …. We are.” Bucky started to say.
“Soulmates.” You both said at the same time and chuckled. Then Bucky moved closer to you and tucked a hair behind your ear.
“I know this might be too soon, but you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this moment.” Bucky said and looked into your eyes to see if you want that kiss too. You smiled at him and made the last step that was between the two of you.

Open Wounds - 21
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x soulmate!reader
Warnings: killing and stuff. a bit darker chapter.
A/N: I’m still here I swear. Just...struggling to get shit done.
Tumblr media
It was a calculated risk.
A loaded gun weighed more than an empty one. Everyone knew that. And Hydra trained you to know how many rounds were left in a weapon from the weight alone. And this one was lighter than it should be.
And this scientist, this doctor, was one of Strucker’s favorites. It was evident in the way he spoke to her. He respected her. Would he really put her at risk? You doubted it. And if you disobeyed, if you fired at him with an empty weapon, you were done. Finished. Dead. And no one would be left to save your Bucky. Not that you’d even get the chance to pull the trigger. He clearly had the remote to your chip in his pocket, his hand wrapped tightly around it. He’d used it on you too many times for you not to recognize it by now.
But still, your hesitation had been you calculating the weight of the gun. Of running the probabilities through your head. The weapon you aimed at the doctor was empty. You’d bet your life on it.
And you would have lost.
The bullet pierced the woman’s skull and her years of ivy league education sprayed across the equipment behind her. Her body crumpled to the floor leaving behind another motherless child in the world. Even as shock slammed through you, you forced your face to remain blank and your hand steady. Fuck, fuck, fuck. They’d done it. He’d done it. Turned you into what he wanted you to be. A cold-blooded killer. Asshole.
Strucker pulled the gun from your grasp and your gaze finally shifted to him. He studied you for a moment with a pleased gleam in his eye. Finally, he looked at the corpse at his feet. “If I thought for a moment you’d actually do it, I would have chosen a different sacrifice. Dr. Gannon had an incredibly creative mind. In fact, it was she that came up with your current experimental regimen.”
Well, fuck her then. You clenched your teeth and closed your eyes as the thought passed through your brain. That wasn’t who you were. That was Hydra filling you with vitriol.
He shrugged and turned back to you. “Pierce will be unhappy but bringing you back under our control will outweigh the loss of the doctor.” He leaned forward until his mouth was but a breath from your ear. You fought the urge to flinch away. He lowered his voice so his words wouldn’t be picked up by the cameras in the room. “And where Nicto goes, Soldat will follow. And you will know that you brought him to us.”
It took everything in you not to react. Not to attack as he most likely expected you to do. He straightened and looked you over once more. Your gaze remained focused on the mess you’d made of another human being rather than the devil that made you do it.
“Prepare yourself, Nicto. This is only the beginning.”
Tumblr media
Once again the Avengers found themselves in a meeting room talking about you. This time they were joined by your father and your best friend.
“Antonin Sergei,” Tony said as a photo of a sharply dressed old man appeared on the screen behind him. “Drugs, guns, you name it, he sold it. Single bullet to the brain. Witnesses put our girl on scene.”
Bucky clenched his teeth together and tapped his thumb on the table. His skin itched, felt too tight. They’d had meeting after meeting about where you might possibly be and were no closer than they were when they raided the wrong base all those weeks ago. Where were you? Why couldn’t he find you?
“Why would Hydra want this guy dead? Seems like someone right up their alley,” Bruce asked.
Clint shrugged. “Competition, maybe?” His gaze shifted over to Wade. “Didn’t you say something about them hiring her out?”
“Rumor had it she was available. Haven’t heard about anyone actually taking them up on it though. Could have just been talk. Hydra getting the word out she was back.”
“This is the third time in as many weeks she’s been sighted at a crime scene. It may be time to consider the possibility they’ve turned her,” Steve suggested, his voice soft but firm. Bucky barely resisted the urge to punch him.
“Impossible,” Phil said as he leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest.
“Look, I get that you don’t want to believe it but this is what Hydra does. They can turn even the strongest willed amongst us. I mean look at Bucky.” Sam gestured with his hands to emphasize his point.
Bucky shook his head and cleared his throat. “You don’t understand. It’s not denial, it’s a fact.” He raked a hand through his hair. “She has some sort of gift, ability. She inherited it from her mother. They can’t fuck with her brain like they did mine. Even when she was a kid they couldn’t make her into what they wanted.”
“So maybe she flipped sides of her own free will,” Tony said with a shrug. “I like the girl but if she’s been out in the field, surely she had a chance to escape and didn’t. Maybe they made her an offer and she took it.”
In a flash, Wade was out of his chair with a katana pointed at Stark’s neck. Bucky blinked in surprise. What the fuck?
“Take it back,” the merc ordered.
Everyone remained quiet and still, not wanting to irritate Wade any further.
His gaze narrowed when Tony just stared with wide eyes, his hands lifted in a gesture of surrender. “I said take it back,” Wade ordered again and pressed the blade closer to the billionaire’s throat, nicking the delicate skin. A thin line of blood ran down the length of his neck.
Bucky stood and clamped his hand on Wade’s shoulder before pulling him back to put space between the weapon and Stark’s neck. “Easy, Wilson. Tony didn’t mean anything by it. He’s just spouting shit as usual.”
Tony frowned. “Hey.”
Clint shook his head. “Not the time, Stark. Let it go. You knew you were going to piss people off and said it anyway.”
Wade grumbled but sat back down. “Only because it’s you asking, buttercup.”
Bucky rolled his eyes. “Where the hell did you have that thing hidden anyway?” He’d been sitting beside the merc for over an hour and hadn’t even spotted it.
Wade grimaced. “You don’t want to know.”
“What is it, Nat?” Clint asked, interrupting the chatter going on around the room and thankfully taking Bucky’s mind off Wade’s hiding place.
Natasha hadn’t uttered a word through the whole meeting. She’d simply sat observing everyone else and taking in the reports. Now, she wore a smile that Bucky had rarely seen.
“Spit it out, Romanoff,” your father ordered when the assassin took a beat too long.
Her gaze flicked from him to Stark. “You said she was seen three times?”
Tony frowned as he held a handkerchief to his neck. He nodded and pressed a couple of buttons on the keyboard in front of him. The three scenes replaced the old man’s face on the screen.
Nat’s smile widened as she looked between Clint, Coulson, Wade and Bucky. “She was seen.”
It took Bucky a moment longer than it should have to understand what she was telling them. You had too much training and were far too good at what you did to be seen if you didn’t want to be. The others figured it out at almost the same time.
It was your father that spoke for all of them. “She wanted us to know she was there. She must have left a message or something. We need to see those photos, Stark. All of them from all three scenes. There must be something there.”
Stark nodded, forgetting about his neck as he got caught up in the new mission. He swept a hand from his screen out toward the room and everyone’s tablets dinged as they received the information. “Jarvis, do some analysis. See if you can find any sort of message from Coulson Junior.”
“Of course, sir.”
The room was silent as they poured over images searching for anything out of place. Anything that might lead them to you.
Nearly an hour passed before the AI spoke again. “Analysis of the areas surrounding the three scenes in question has led me to discover the following.”
Three images of poorly done graffiti flashed on the screen. “It was far enough away to not be tied to the crime scenes but close enough she could have easily accomplished it while on her assignment,” Jarvis explained.
“It just looks like a mess to me,” Sam admitted. “What am I missing?”
Red outlines appeared around the letters hiding in the graffiti before spelling them out below. Belarus. Bucky was on his feet as hope surged through him. Its not like he could go after you right at that moment, but he couldn’t stay seated. Not when they had their first real lead to your location in weeks.
“What do we know about Hydra activity in Belarus?” Steve asked.
“I have already analyzed that as well, Captain. I believe Miss Coulson to be at the facility located here,” Bucky’s favorite AI stated before showing a map with a mark near the northern border of the country.
Bucky’s gaze found your father only to find the man already looking back at him. “I can have the bus ready to go in thirty.”
Bucky grinned. “I’ll be ready in fifteen.”

Burns ~ Tony Stark
Author's Note: Since my other account @cheekyredwillow got deleted. I am adding some of my favorite fanfictions to this account and revamping this one with new ones. I hope to make an actual list of fandoms I am still a fan of! NO requests for the time being.
On to the one shot! This is a plus size reader and a soulmate prompt where you have similar markings as your soulmate.
Ever since you turned 25 years old, you noticed burns and bruises form down your arms. You weren’t noticing these earlier but you must have recently got these with your soulmate. For a long time, you believed you did not have a soulmate. Now he or she has finally showed up.
You were so surprised but why did you have to get their burns. It hurts so much every day. It’s like working in a factory with heat. But you know your soulmate is not very happy about you. I mean who would like cellulite marks on their bodies and wrinkle marks where fat is. Stretch marks on top of it. It is disgusting.
What you did not know is Tony Stark, the playboy, billionaire, philanthropist was your soulmate. Ever since Pepper left as his secretary, he had to find someone who could fill that space. He knew his soulmate was somewhere because he started to see stretch marks where he had not used to see. While his mindset on women is the skinny broads, he realized that he would not mind someone on the thicker side.
You were looking for a job in New York and noticed Stark Industries was looking for a secretary. You used to do secretary work in your hometown so you applied immediately. Sure you did not look the part but you did keep a mean schedule. You were called in for an interview by Tony Stark for Monday.
As Monday rolled around, your nerves were going crazy. You dressed your best professional wear and drove to Stark Industries. A button up blouse, a black skirt, and black flats. You noticed the system JARVIS allowed you in and you saw Tony Stark in a lab.
“Morning. You must be the new secretary. Tony Stark.” He said as he held out his hand which was smeared with oil and grease.
“Y/n L/n. What do you mean new secretary?” You asked.
“I went ahead and hired you. You’ll live here in Stark Industries. Don’t worry about it beautiful.” He said nonchalantly.
“I don’t know what to say.” You said softly.
“Don’t say a word about it. Just take the position.” Tony said as you smiled.
“I will.” You said as he grinned.
“Perfect. You start tomorrow. Come on, let’s have a drink.” He said as you blushed.
“Bu-But-”
"Nothing! We need to celebrate this!" Tony said proudly before pulling out some scotch and two glasses.
As Tony picked up two glasses, one of them shattered on the floor and a few shards of glass cut your leg.
"Ow!!" You both said loudly. Tony froze looking at your leg and his which suddenly also began to bleed. Your mind raced as you knew what this meant. Tony Stark is your soulmate and you had to go.
You booked it with your bleeding leg back to your car in his garage. As you began to start it up and pull a first aid kid out of the backseat, you saw Tony was immediately behind your car so you couldn't leave. You sighed and rolled down your window.
"Mr. Stark please move now." You said as he crossed his arms.
"I'm not moving till you let me come sit with you and explain." Tony said as you sighed again. The doors unlocked and Tony got into the front seat.
"How's your leg?" Tony asked as you hissed.
"It will be fine. I just have to clean it and bandage. Yours?" You questioned as he smiled softly.
"I wrapped it before I came out here. I feel like we need to discuss what occurred." Tony said as you finished placing the bandage.
"What is there to talk about? You are soulmates with a fat chick that's your secretary. That's what this is about. Just go ahead and fire me and we do not have to see each other." You rambled before feeling Tony's hand on yours.
"Y/n please let me speak." He said softly before you sighed.
"Go ahead." You said as he turned your face to look at him.
"I knew my soulmate was thicker than most girls I have dated. I was honestly happy to see someone different. Just imagining holding your warm and soft body against mine will be a change. Just having someone who is a lot softer will make my life so much different. When you first walked into the building, my mind was already set on asking you out. It wasn't until the glass shattering that it gave me assurance to ask you out." Tony said.
"But I'm just some fat girl." You sighed.
"But I do not care. You've had to deal with my injuries of creating Iron Man and I'm surprised you don't hate me. You are not just "some fat girl". You are so much more and I would love to prove that to you." He said as you chuckled.
"I honestly thought you worked in a factory." You said as he threw his head back and laughed.
"Please give me a chance as your soulmate Y/n. I promise to treat you well." Tony said as you were blushing.
"I will." You said as he kissed your lips. It felt like a missing puzzle piece fit right in and your lips moulded so well.
When you broke off the kiss, you turned your car off so the two of you could go back into Stark Industries where you moved in later and became his soulmate for a long time.

What Souls Are Made Of (Bucky Barnes/Darcy Lewis Soulmate AU)
Tumblr media
A/N: Not betta’d, not proof read.
Soulmate Identifying Marks: the first words your soulmate speaks to you are tattooed on your skin.
Darcy frequented coffee shops almost every day. She always ordered an iced coffee, no matter the weather. In the 100 degree New Mexico heat or in the middle of a New York blizzard, never did she order a hot coffee. The reason for this quirk of hers? She didn’t want to scald her soulmate when she inevitably spilt coffee on them.  Her soulmark, black script under her left clavicle, written with a penmanship that Darcy was awed over were the words “It’s okay Sweetheart, I didn’t like this suit anyways.” She wasn’t one hundred percent sure that she’d meet her soulmate at a coffee shop, but that was the only logical explanation for how Darcy would ruin someone’s outfit, so she kept her fingers crossed and set aside an astronomical coffee allowance each month. When Darcy moved into the tower, Jane always teased her for bothering to walk the six blocks to the nearest coffee shop when Avengers Tower had it’s own coffee place only a few floors below them. She just always stuck out her tongue out at her best friend/boss on the way out the door.
Bucky didn’t have a soulmate back in the 40s. He was a blank, just like Steve, it was one of the reasons he and the punk bonded the way they did; they only had each other.  Throughout his time as The Asset, he couldn’t remember ever realizing he had a mark. When your brain is being frozen and thawed over and over, memories turn into a haze of confusion. When he finally had come back to himself, falling from the Triskelion he filed it away for later, not wanting to think about the fact that he had a soulmate. Finally when his running was over, when he had obliterated every hidden Hydra base he had memory of, he found a safe house in the middle of nowhere and tried to put the pieces of his soul back together. His soulmark scared him, it rocked him to his core. Their placement wasn’t lost on him, words scrawled down his right forearm, his dominant hand, the hand he always shot with “You’re covered in blood”. He was terrified that somehow Hydra would find him, turn him back into their weapon, that the Soldier would meet his mate first, and he had no doubt of what the Soldier would do. Their inky black letters were the only reassurance Bucky had that he hadn’t already met them. That his soulmate was out there somewhere, alive and well. He prayed to a god he didn’t believe in, hoping he’d never meet them.
Bucky hated going to his therapy sessions, he hated having to go meet with a government appointed shrink who he knew was more worried about cataloging every detail about his time with Hydra than they were helping him heal. But it was a requirement of his freedom, that he meet with a shrink once a month, to prove he was making progress, that he was no longer the monster he once was. He scoffed sardonically at the thought, he knew better. He would always be the monster they made him, it was always lurking in the back of his mind, waiting. But he pretended, he put on the black suit in his closet, showed up and told them what they wanted to hear, that he was cured, no longer the weapon he had been, trying to believe the lies himself. This day was no different, he was leaving Dr. Adam’s office blocks away from the tower and trying to calm himself. He counted to 10, breathing in and out slowly, trying to make the anger boiling up in him subside. He was tired of jumping through hoops, putting on the stupid government monkey suit, sitting through an interrogation every month. He still wasn’t free, not really, he had just traded one handler for another, no matter how Dr. Adams had tried to spin it. His head was spinning, he had to get away from the crowds and the noise on the street. He ducked into an alley, one he often used it to cut through to Stark’s gaudy building, ripping off his suit jacket and loosening his tie. He couldn’t breathe, he was suffocating. He started muttering to himself, repeating the grounding words Sam had taught him over and over again like a mantra. Bucky finally came back to himself, not knowing how much time had passed. His panic attacks always felt like they went on forever but usually they only lasted for a few minutes. They became shorter the more he used the techniques Sam had been teaching him. He ran his flesh hand over his face, wiping away the sheen of sweat that had appeared. Taking a deep breath he grabbed his phone out of his back pocket, glancing at the time, 2:08, he was late. He and Steve had planned to meet in the gym at 2:00. Working out and talking things out with Steve always helped after his therapy sessions. He cursed unlocking his phone to shoot Steve a text letting him know he was okay just running behind, when he heard a scream.
——
Darcy knew a petite woman probably shouldn’t be cutting through alleys alone by themselves in New York City. It didn’t matter that it was the middle of the afternoon, nothing ever good happened in dark alleyways, even in downtown Manhattan. But she was running late, her favorite coffee place always closed at 2:30 for the afternoon, reopening around 5:00 pm for the after work crowd. She normally wouldn’t have cut it so close, but she and Jane had to catch a flight to New Mexico at 4:30, planning to observe a meteor shower in the middle of the desert, and she couldn’t miss it. According to Jane this shower only occurred once every 200 years, so she knew that if she was late Jane would kill her. Any sane person would just skip their coffee run, shrugging it off and go back tomorrow, but Darcy was not sane. What if today was the day she’d meet them? What if she didn’t go today and that was when fate had decided that it was time, and if she missed them what if she never got another chance? Meeting your soulmate was never a guarantee and Darcy was not taking any chances. So she prayed to Thor, shooting up a glance at the sky hoping Heimdall was watching and ducked into the alley.
Darcy wasn’t stupid, she kept her head on a swivel, she was halfway through the alley. It was long, cutting her commute by two blocks but she had never had any issues before so she hoped she wouldn’t today.  She spotted the man sitting at the bottom of the fire escape before he saw her. He had a bottle of liquor in his hand, muttering to himself and then taking a deep swig from the bottle. She debated turning back, but something was nagging her to keep going. She stood up straighter, digging her hand into her messenger bag. She admonished herself when she realized in her haste leaving the lab that she had forgotten to make sure she had her taser. That would be the last time she let Stark tinker with her toys, her science bro hadn’t put it back in her bag like she had asked him to. But Darcy wouldn’t let herself panic, nothing had happened, she would just confidently walk past the man and be on her way. She suppressed her cringe when he noticed her walk by and catcalled her. She ignored him, head held high and increased her pace minutely.
“I was talking to you, bitch!” The man yelled, getting up from the fire escape.
Darcy knew she should’ve just kept walking, ignoring her indignation and keep her mouth shut, that would be the smart thing to do; but Darcy never considered herself smart.
She turned back, outraged at the audacity at this man. “And I was ignoring you, bitch!”
“The fuck you just say to me?” The man yelled walking towards her before bracing himself on the railing of the fire escape, clearly drunk.
“You heard me.” She said, turning and storming off, muttering about sexist repugnant assholes and their lack of respect. It was then when she was shoved from behind, slamming into the brick wall on her left. She let out a shout, she hadn’t heard the man come up behind her. She turned, laying a solid right hook into her assailant, she had been aiming for his jaw but she had underestimated how tall he was. The punch landed on his shoulder, making the man stagger back but it didn’t give her the advantage she needed.
She was shoved again hard against the brick, her head slamming back into the brick with a crack. The man was right on top of her, pressing her against the wall.
“You should watch your mouth Bitch. Wouldn’t want to piss off the wrong guy, never know what might happen. .” He sneered, pressing something cold into her abdomen, if she had to bet it was the end of a gun.
She wanted to scream, to panic, to blindly lash out at her attacker but a voice sounding strangely like a certain red headed Russian she knew told her to be calm, to take stock of her position, analyze what assets she had to her advantage. Her arms weren’t pinned to her sides but there wasn’t anything within arms reach. She knew she didn’t have the strength to fight him off outright, so she decided that running was her only option. If she could get in a good strike or two and  then run, she should be able to escape and get help. She’d have to take him by surprise, but she could do it.
“You’re right.” She spoke softly, slowly raising her hands to her sides in surrender.
The man smiled “damn right, pretty girl like you shouldn’t talk like that, especially to a man.” He raised one hand to her face.
Darcy tried not to flinch away, focusing on how the movement exposed his face to her. Now was her chance. Natasha always told her that the eyes were a weakness, that when cornered she should use any weakness her attacker had to her advantage. So she struck, using her sharp nails to her advantage, gouging at her assailants eyes. He screamed, automatically reaching up to protect his eyes. The sudden movement made her vision swim, she definitely had a concussion. She shoved him then, trying to get him off of her enough so she could escape but his weight mixed with her incoordination from her head injury made it so he didn’t move very much. He pushed her against the wall again, and Darcy fought, panic finally taking over. She kicked out blindly, hoping to knock him off balance so she could escape.
She heard the gun go off before she registered the pain in her side. She slid down the wall, hands automatically going to where the bullet had lodge in her stomach. She watched her attacker run away, having enough energy to push the panic button hidden on her necklace as her vision grew black.
—
Bucky was running before he realized it, he was so focused on the man running out of the alley that he almost ran past her. She was slumped against the brick wall, one hand clutching her side, the other holding on a pendant around her neck. She seemed vaguely familiar but he was unsure where he had seen her before, if he actually knew her or if she was just a random face in the crowd. He shook his head, as if he could shake the feeling that he knew the woman bleeding in front of him. He knelt, laying her body flat, leaning over her to check for a pulse. She was breathing thankfully. He placed pressure on the wound with his metal hand and grabbed his phone out of his pocket with the other, dialing Steve and putting the phone up to his ear before applying pressure with the other hand.
“Buck you’re—.” Steve answered but Bucky cut him off.
“Track my location, I need medical, one civilian, gunshot wound to the lower left abdomen, I’m not far from the tower.
Steve was gone, the voice of the Captain replacing him “Okay Bucky, they’re on the way, I’m headed your way too, ETA 2 minutes.”
Bucky straightened his head where it had been cradling the phone, letting it fall to the ground. He didn’t know the woman bleeding underneath him, but he would save her, he needed to save her.
An extreme jolt of pain brought Darcy back to consciousness. She moaned and opened her eyes, squinting against the sunlight. There was a man above her, she panicked momentarily before she realized it wasn’t the same man that attacked her. He was on the phone, she heard him talking frantically, calling someone for help. She studied the man before her, the figure was blurry but she could make out some of his features. He was handsome, striking blue eyes and beautiful brown hair that was tied back into a man bun. She didn’t normally like longer hair on men but he pulled it off. His hair style was a contrast against his outfit, he was wearing black pants and a white button-down shirt. It was a shame he was covered in blood, why was he bleeding?
“You’re covered in blood.” Darcy spoke, raising a weak hand to poke the man on the chest. Another wave of pain radiated from her side and that’s when she looked down, noticing the man had both hands pressed to her side. She frowned then, she was bleeding, why was she bleeding? She ruined this man’s nice outfit. Tears sprang to her eyes then, she hadn’t meant to ruin his suit. A part of her knew that the last thing she should be worried about was this man’s clothes, she was literally bleeding to death, but the blood loss was getting to her and clearly making her brain a little insane.
“I ruined you outfit.” She said as she ran her hand down the mans front, as if she could wipe away the blood.
““It’s okay Sweetheart, I didn’t like this suit anyways.” The man replied in a soothing tone. She hummed and blinked hard, trying to fight off the darkness. He had a nice voice, she thought as the world around her started to fade. It was warm and she was so very cold.
Bucky was counting the seconds that went by since he talked to Steve. Two minutes, who knew 120 seconds could go by so slowly. At 51 seconds he pressed harder on the woman’s side, hoping he wasn’t pressing too hard but the blood was seeping past his palms. He heard the woman groan then, the excessive pressure and pain rousing her from her unconscious state. She was frowning up at him, a confused look painted on her face. She licked her lips and Bucky tried not to notice how nice her lips were, or that they were painted the same color of the warm liquid leaking between his fingers. His eyes were torn away from her face and to his chest where her small hand nudged his chest.
“You’re covered in blood” she spoke, the words sounding as if she was confused as to why that was.
Bucky inhaled sharply, her words setting off alarm bells in his mind. This injured woman bleeding out beneath him was his soulmate. She was his, and she was dying. He leaned on his army training to keep his fear at bay. His panic would not help either one of them, and he would help her, she would not die today, he wouldn’t allow it. He was roused from his thoughts as her her hand traveled the length of his chest.
“I ruined your outfit.”
She was crying, tears silently falling from the biggest blue eyes Bucky had ever seen. She was scared, he could see it in those aegean eyes. She was scared and yet here she was worried about how her blood had ruined his suit.
“It’s okay Sweetheart, I didn’t like this suit anyways.” he spoke in what he hoped was a soothing voice. He wanted to ease her worries, if she only knew how much he hated this suit. He hated it even more now that it was covered in his soulmates blood. She smiled up at him as her eyes began to close again.
“Come on doll, you gotta stay awake okay? Help is coming.” Bucky urged her. He wanted to pat her face, to rouse her but he could’t remove his hands from the oozing wound. How many seconds had It been? Surely it had been two minutes. The panic was setting in, this wasn’t what Bucky had planned, this wasn’t how their meeting was supposed to go.
“Please, please doll, just stay with me. Stay with me, please, please.” That’s how Steve found him, begging his soulmate to stay with him. Bucky didn’t even realize help had arrived until he was being shoved aside by Stark’s medics. Steve had to forcibly drag him from his soulmates side.
“Buck, they got her. They’re helping her, she’s gonna be okay Bucky.” His best friend was in front of him now, grasping his shoulders shaking him. “You okay Buck?” Steve questioned, concern lacing his voice.
“It’s her Steve. It’s her and she lost so much blood and I couldn’t—” Bucky choked on the words “—I couldn’t stop the bleeding. She wasn’t supposed to be the one bleeding. It wasn’t supposed to be hers.” It was then that Bucky felt the tears, tracks of wetness falling down his cheeks. He went to wipe them away but stopped short, catching the sight of his soulmates blood on his hands.
The sound of Iron Man’s repulsors drew both he and Steve’s attention. “Where is Darcy? She activated her panic button.” Stark questioned anxiously.
“Who?” Steve questioned as Bucky pointed towards the medical team.
“Darcy!” Tony rushed over to the woman surrounded by medics. “I have a medical team ready back at the tower, she stable enough to be moved?” Stark asked worriedly
“Times not on her side, sir. We were able to temporarily cauterize the bleed but it’s not a permanent fix, any jostle and the bleeding will start back up. She’s lost a lot of blood.”
“FRIDAY notify medical, we’re gonna need an OR right now. I’m bringing Darcy in through the the Penthouse. You guys get her ready to move, I’m taking her back, quickest way to get her to medical.” Tony demanded turning back to face Bucky and Steve.
“Did you do this? Did you lose control? If you hurt her, I’ll kill you.” Tony pointed accusingly towards Bucky his voice laced with malice.
Steve opened his mouth to object at Stark’s accusations but Bucky spoke up first. Unsurprisingly Stark had suspected he was behind the bloodshed. He knew what it looked like and he knew what Tony thought of him. “I was at the opposite end of the alley, heard her scream, came running. The person who attacked her ran, couldn’t chase after him and keep her from bleeding out. Don’t know what he looked like. Tell the doctor’s she’s got a head injury, she wasn’t making much sense when she was awake.”
Stark nodded once in comprehension, not even apologizing for his assumptions before he turned, bundled the brunette in his arms and took off.
“Steve, please, I gotta…” Bucky’s voice trailed off, turning back towards the tower.
“I know Buck, go. I’ll meet you in medical once we’re done here.”
Bucky took off running, sprinting as fast as he could, his thoughts racing faster than his feet. Darcy…his soulmates name is Darcy. His soulmate was Darcy and she would live. She must live.

The first words
(Soulmate AUs make my little heart go brrrrrrrrr. Soulmate Au where the first words your soulmate says are written on your wrist.) (I’m gay but goddamn Otto Octavius could get it.)
Tumblr media
You stared down at your wrist confused. For the longest time you thought that you didn’t have a soulmate. Everyone else got their soulmate mark when they turned 18. Yours never turned up.
So why was there words written in red across your wrist at the age of 30?
Your phone lit up with a call. Stopping your pondering you picked up the call.
“Peter? What’s up? Why are you calling me?”
“Hi (Y/n), you remember Doctor Strange right?” Your brothers voice echoed over the phone.
“Yeah, the guy who trained me?”
“Yeah, Him. Can you come to the Sanctum Sanctorum like right now.”
“Why?” You asked.
“It’s a lot, I’ll explain when you get here.”
“Fine. You’re lucky I love you. I’ll be there in 10 minutes.” You hung up on your brother and sighed, slipping shoes on.
Hopping in the car you floored it to the address.
You pulled to a stop in front of the building and stepped out.
Peter. followed by MJ and Ned rushed out.
“Thank god you’re here.” Peter flung his arms around his sister.
“Peter, what’s going on?”
“So I may have asked Doctor Strange to cast a spell to make the world forget that I’m Spiderman, but the spell fucked up and pulled in a bunch of villains from the multiverse to our universe.”
“YOU WHAT? PETER HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU TO NOT FUCK WITH MAGIC?”
“I know I’m sorry. I was panicking.”
“Its fine. but next time before messing with magic, maybe call your sister who trained under Strange?”
“Right sorry.”
“Anyways lead me to them. We’re sending them back right?”
“Yeah, I figured you could help with finding them.”
“You mean you haven’t located them all yet?” You pinched your nose.
“No..” Peter mumbled.
“Whatever, just take me to them.”
You followed your Brother, his soulmate and his best friend into a basement where you saw two people behind magic cages.
“Oh shit is that a tentacle monster?”
“Shut your mouth girl.” You felt something warm on your wrist and looked down only to see the red words turn gold.
“What. the. FUCK.”

Soulmate pt. FOUR
Welcome to the next part!
Finally I was able to update! Enjoy!
Warning: Swearing, Trauma, Injuries
A strained groan filtered into the hallway from the training room. Bucky's feet faltered as Sam's voice followed it.
"Push, Lee, push!"
Bucky turned the corner hesitantly, he'd been hoping to get the room to himself, hoping that everyone was still in bed. Instead, he found Paisley, seated at his favorite piece of equipment and Sam standing over her. He spoke words of encouragement, occasionally touching her shoulder as he hyped her up.
"Go! Go! Five more!" He talked loudly, over the constant clink of the weights. Feet flat on the platform, Paisley pushed with her legs, lifting the series of weights and then in a slow, controlled movement, she brought her knees to her chest and lowered the weights again. God, even covered in sweat with her curls escaping her bun, she was beautiful. Bucky's eyes honed in on the number of weights and the tiny number on the weights. Totaling them quickly in his head, he let out a surprised huff. Damn, she must have the strongest thighs.
"You coming in, or are you gonna linger in the doorway like a creep?" Sam's voice rose to address him, but he didn't turn away from where Paisley continued to pump her legs.
Bucky's cheeks turned pink and he was suddenly glad no one turned to look at him. Narrowing his eyes, he walked right past them, mumbling a rough 'good morning.' One teasing question and he was already done with Sam for the day. That had to be a new record.
With his eyes downcast, he stepped on to a treadmill. Starting at a jog, he quickly ramped it up to a sprint, trying to chase away his embarrassment along with the nightmares that had woke him so early. He watched from the corner of his eye as Paisley let the weights drop, sitting upright. Sam handed her a bottle of water and for once, as a droplet of condensation dripped down her neck, trailing toward her cleavage, Bucky wished he didn't have super-soldier-eye-sight. Looking down at his feet, he tried hard to push images of her from his mind.
Pulling his mind out of the lusty gutter it had fallen into, Bucky lifted his head to see them moving on to a mat almost directly in front of him. Stretching a bit first, the pair took up a sparring position. He watched in awe, amazed at how fast Paisley was. Something about her movement was off, the way her feet moved. Her steps were almost clumsy... She dodged the punches Sam hurtled at her easily, landing a few of her own here and there. However, it didn't take long for her to tire out. She didn't have the stamina to fight a trained military man. Most people didn't. So when Sam lunged at her again it was no surprise that he landed his next blow. What did surprise him though was that he felt the hit at the... Exact. Same. Time.
It happened all at once. Two groans filled the air. Two pairs of hands came up to hold their stomach. Bucky just barely hit the emergency stop on the treadmill, nearly falling on his face in the process. Sam looked on with wide brown eyes as his sister sunk to the floor, pressing a hand to her side. Slowly, with a cool, calculating expression, he turned his eyes on his friend. Bucky's hand pressed to the same spot on his body, his mouth hanging open as he looked back at him.
"Oh, hell no! " Sam yelled, turning his entire body to face Bucky's doubled over form. "No, no, no, NO! MY SISTER?"
Bucky looked just as surprised, between his run and the punch to the side, he felt like he couldn't breathe. Like all the air had been sucked from his lungs. His mouth opened and closed as he straightened up, the shared pain already fading.
On the floor, Paisley sat on her knees, hands still pressed to her side, she too was breathing hard. Wide hazel eyes met his, a foreign emotion flashing in them. Her pink lips parted as if to say something, but no words formed.
"Well, someone say something!" Sam bellowed, unable to take the heavy silence a moment longer.
"I-"
"Not. You." He gritted through pearly white teeth, glaring hard at his friend.
Bucky snapped his mouth shut, pressing his lips together hard. Fucking fine. He'd stand here and say nothing.
"You alright, Lee?" Sam reached for her hand, pulling her up off the mat. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you, you have got to remember to tuck your elbows in."
Paisley nodded at him, pushing herself up as Sam pulled her hand. Shit, did she just find her soulmate? Did she travel the entire continent only to have stumbled upon him when visiting her brother? "I-I'm good." She hissed as Sam pinched her arm.
Bucky subconsciously touched his own arm, feeling the twinge through their link.
"I don't believe this." Sam cried, stepping back as she slapped at his hand.
"Yeah, me either." She agreed with him under her breath. Bucky heard it though, how couldn't he? Damn super-soldier-hearing. He felt his heart sink into his stomach. She didn't want him. Of course she didn't want him. He was a monster. A murder. A fucked-up, traumatized, freak.
Unable to look her in the eye, Bucky dropped his gaze to the floor, walking past them as quickly as he could without all out running. He couldn't stand here and risk seeing the disappointment fill her eyes. He wouldn't be able to breathe if he saw that. He felt physically ill, like he was going to puke. In the hallway, when he was sure they couldn't see him, he ran. Back at his room, he slammed the door behind him, locking it as he stumbled toward the bathroom. He made it just in time to hurl what little breakfast he'd eaten back into the toilet. Sweat coated his entire body as his stomach churned again, clenching as it pushed up every once of food he'd eaten in the last twenty-four hours.
"Holy hell! " He groaned, flushing the toilet as he sank back against the sink. Is this what it felt like to be rejected by a soulmate? He felt as if his body was tearing apart at the seams, slowly deteriorating from the inside out. His heart raced as the familiar feelings of a panic attack gripped him. Bucky curled in on himself, breathing ragged, hands shaking, a cold sweat dampening his forehead. He was so wrapped up in his own panic, he barely heard the pounding on his door.
"Bucky!" Someone yelled from the hallway. "Bucky! You open this door right now!" He heard him, but he couldn't move. He was too frozen. Too stuck in his head. Concentrating too hard on trying to breathe. He nearly jumped out of his skin when the door flew open, banging against the wall. Suddenly, Sam was kneeling in front of him, hands gripping his shoulders, shaking him not so gently.
"Bucky! Bucky, calm down! I swear to God, Buck, if you kill my sister over some messed up, self-destructive, stuck in my feelings bullshit, I will fucking kill you! Snap. Out. Of. It!" Sam shouted at him, shaking him harshly, only when he slapped his friend across the cheek did his eyes seem to refocus. "Fucking finally ! Pull it together, man! She's down there in the gym puking on the floor!"
Bucky sat up straighter, shoving Sam's hands away. He sucked in a breath like he had been underwater this whole time. "Get off of me!"
"Then pull your shit together!"
"She doesn't want m-me!" Bucky whimpered, his voice cracking at the end as an unexpected sadness washed over him. "She doesn't..." He sucked in another breath, feeling the burn in his eyes that told him he was about to cry right here in front of Sam.
"Get a hold of yourself!" Sam reached forward again, fisting Bucky's shirt and jerking him forward. "She never said that, now calm the fuck down before you send her into another panic attack."
Bucky stilled, only now realizing she was suffering alongside him. "Shit!"
"Yeah, shit is right, man, what the hell!" Sam released him then, standing up and offering him a hand. "Now get your ass up." Bucky looked up at him with wide eyes, guilt washing over him as he thought about Paisley. "Take my damn hand and get up." Sam hissed. Bucky hesitated before finally reaching up, letting Sam haul him to his feet.
"I... I'm sorry." Bucky apologized, eyes falling to the floor.
"Listen, just clean yourself up and go talk to her. She never said she didn't want you, so don't jump to conclusions."
"Why would she?" Bucky snapped, whipping his head up and fixing him with a hard glare. "Why would someone so sweet want anything to do with me?" He fisted his hands, smacking his own chest. "I'm a monster, Sam! A murder!"
Sam clicked his tongue, a look of sorrow filling his brown eyes. "You're not those things anymore, Buck. That's all over. You're James Buchanan Barnes, the White Wolf, an avenger, a friend." He reached over then, gripping his shoulder, giving it a squeeze. "You're past is not who you are anymore. We all know that, she knows that. You gotta forgive yourself, man. It's time to move on. She's your soulmate... As gross as that is to think about it. My sister is the one person in this world designed especially for you, and you for her. Don't make this choice for her because you're panicking. Give her a chance, Buck."
He couldn't reply, there were too many emotions clogging his throat. Instead, he looked away, staring hard at the wall as a single tear escaped the corner of his eye. His jaw clenched as he fought to control himself, his empty hands aching to grab something, hold it tight, ground himself. He nodded, sniffing as Sam stepped back and let him go.
"Get a shower, your ass stinks."
Bucky chuckled them, despite everything, he laughed. Slapping Sam on the back as he walked away, he pushed the broken door shut as far as it would go and stripped out of his clothes. Stepping into the shower he let the hot water wash away the tears, the frustration, the remaining panic. He scrubbed everything away, watching it swirl down the drain as he reigned in his intense feelings. He'd never felt like this before. So hopeful, so full of joy and then to have it all squashed like a bug. It gave him whiplash, made him physically sick, had him literally throwing up.
Bucky stuck his head under the water, closing his eyes as it ran down his face. The hot water relaxed his tight muscles, the steam opening up his airways in a way that settled him. Finally, he turned the handle and shut the water off, grabbing a towel from the rack and wrapping it around him. By the time he had dried off, changed into something comfortable and mustered up the courage to leave his room, it was well past noon and he couldn't find Paisley anywhere.

Soulmates: two souls that are deeply connected and once successfully found, can communicate through their minds, no matter how far the location or language that was spoken. They were rare and many people were driven insane with the search to find their one true love but not you, you'd accepted years ago that there may never be the chance of ever finding her until fate was on your side.
It had been a beautifully mundane day. The movies like to show a romantic first meeting between two souls tied together from the depths of time, whether it be colliding in a coffee shop, running through the rain or even the hero saving someone from a villain. This was not anything like the start to your story, in fact, there were many details you couldn't remember.
Was it sunny? A Monday? Were you wearing jeans or leggings? You were completely unsure of any of these details but these were all menial with regard to the bigger picture no matter what day it was; it was the best day of your life as you met your soulmate. One minute your thoughts were your own, always described as 'hauntingly silent' by individuals who had already found their soulmates and thought back to the time before meeting their loved one.
Then the next, as you turned towards the exit of your work, your eyes hadn't even connected with her green eyes, still mesmerised by her lips as another silky voice echoed, "Oh", through your mind. It wasn't just this, as a warmth settled through your chest, not realising how empty you had been surviving through life until you finally found her, Natasha, your soulmate.
Natasha Romanoff had recently joined SHIELD when the two of you met but, she was honest about her alter ego Black Widow, as well as her past as an assassin which quickly helped to decide the dynamic of your relationship: a secret.
You were a nurse in a small hospital in the middle of nowhere, it was a surprise to you that Natasha had even found your workplace with it only being used by the locals. This fact actually aided with you being able to keep the relationship secret, you were a nobody in comparison to Natasha, no one would even look in your direction with suspicions or notice a hooded figure sneaking into your home in the middle of the night with your lack of neighbours.
At first, it had been difficult, you'd just found someone you wanted to spend every waking second with but she had to travel around the world and face dangerous missions constantly. However, thankfully with your soulmate connection, you could talk through your minds as long as you were both awake. Then as aliens attacked Earth and the Avengers were formed, you were happy to still be hidden, knowing that if anyone found out about you, they could use you against Natasha so a long-distance relationship it was.
Every single day, the two of you spoke, her words always feeling like being wrapped in a tight warm hug or when the tone changes, a seductive finger sliding down your spine.
Today, you were 5 hours into your shift at the hospital, finding a spare moment to wander down an empty corridor, hugging a report to your chest as a smile widened across your face.
You aren't lying to me, are you? your words were teasing towards Natasha but had every undertone of seriousness behind them.
Natasha had to hide her smile behind the microphone of the headpiece she wore as she was currently flying the Quinjet on the way back from a mission with the Avengers. Why would I lie to you, Milaya?
Your heartbeat quickened at the use of her nickname for you, Milaya, translating to darling, a name that often had you feeling safe and warm. It was also an easy way for Natasha to distract you from your questioning so you shook your head and tried to remain on track with your mind communication.
Please tell me, you encouraged, trying to find out if your soulmate had earned any injuries on this mission.
I'm fine, it's only a scratch on my wrist. - and bruised ribs to match the deep purple shade forming along her jaw where some asshole managed to punch her in the face, but you didn't need to know about that Natasha decided. You were at work and didn't need the distraction.
Hmm fine, I'll believe you for now but I'm going to see if you're lying when you get here in 2 days' time, you responded trying to sound slightly doubtful, having had this conversation with the red-haired assassin far too many times before.
Natasha's mouth quipped into a soft smile that she didn't bother to hide, eyes softening as she looked across the extensive view of clouds. 2 days seemed like such a long time to you both, her stomach twisting uncomfortably thinking about the wait as she decided, I'll try and visit sooner.
Don't rush baby, I would love to see you but please rest. It had been nearly two weeks since you had been able to hold or kiss Natasha and it was almost like you craved to be with her, needing to smell her hair, stroke her bare skin - you were going insane without her around. However, you couldn't help but feel bad that she felt the need to rush to be with you, she was so busy on these missions, hardly eating, sleeping and having to be at peak physical performance at all times. She was doing the very most and travelling across the country to see you whereas you had to sit pretty and wait for her, yes you worked full-time at the hospital but it was hard to compare your fatigue to Natasha's.
I just want to be with you, Natasha finally admitted, her voice losing the confident tone she had been trying to uphold for your benefit.
Your steps slowed to a stop as you stared at a crack in the concrete floor, I want to be with you too. You sighed out loud, wiping a hand down your face before trying to continue the conversation. Where are you at the moment?
Natasha swallowed the lump forming in her throat, the sudden overwhelming sensation to cry needing to pass as she was still surrounded by her friends in the Quinjet who had no idea she had found her soulmate all of those years ago. Looking at her coordinates, she replied, we are flying over Colorado at the moment.
You smiled slightly as you approached the door you had originally been planning on visiting in the hospital, the happiness felt through the bond that Nat could feel her chest warming. Oh, I've always wanted to visit Colorado, I've heard the--.
Silence.
Not the silence that came with being distracted and losing your train of thought but the sort of quiet that left an empty hole in Natasha's chest as she waited for you to finish your sentence but it never came. The assassin sat up further in her seat, heart beginning to pound violently behind her ribcage as the realisation dawned on her that the emotions she was experiencing were the haunting silence she felt before meeting you before there was ever a soulmate connection.
Milaya? Natasha asked into the void of her mind, but there wasn't any sort of response or emotions felt back. Even when you were asleep, Natasha could feel your calmness and sense of contentment through the bond but it was just...lifeless.
MILAYA?! The red-haired woman was screaming through her mind, frantically pulling off her headset as they felt suddenly claustrophobic, forest green eyes darting wildly around the multitude of buttons laid out before her on the jet's console.
Nat hadn't noticed that in her surge of anxiety to try and get you to respond, she had actually begun verbalising her nickname for you, which caught the attention of Tony who was sitting closest to her.
"Who? I'm not naming the jet that Nat, if- Woah". Tony's words were swiftly cut off as Natasha pushed past him, her mouth was painfully dry, eyes wide and unblinking with fear, the match the tremor that had settled in her hands as she grabbed the touchscreen computer typing in your hospital's location.
Her eyes moved faster across the screen than ever before. There was nothing, no reports of an attack, nothing that would be a reason for your bond to completely disappear. Next, she opened the local police scanners and reports but once more, there was nothing that reverted back to the hospital.
Every second that agonisingly ticked past, she continued to scream a mixture between your name and Milaya, hoping there would be some sort of a response but nothing seemed to come of it.
"Natasha? What is it?", it was Steve who was asking now. Natasha's erratic behaviour was quickly questioned by her colleagues and friends who all approached and watched with confusion as she continued to lose all control.
Clint pushed past the others, grabbing onto his best friend's shoulders, his eyebrows furrowing as a tear slipped from the woman's eye, sliding down her cheek. Looking over her shoulder towards the screen, he recognised the hospital name, him being the only person that Natasha trusted with your whereabouts.
"What is it?" Clint demanded.
"I... I can't hear her", Natasha's voice was quiet and displayed her distraught brokenness.
"Her? Who is her?" Tony asked.
"Tony, not now", it was Bruce this time who spoke up, having never seen Natasha lose her composure like this, something had to be seriously wrong.
Clint's hands moved to cup her cheeks, forcing her to look up at him, "Nat, I'm gonna need you to take a deep breath in for me and tell me what's going on."
Natasha removed herself from Clint's grip after taking one steady breath before turning back towards the computer screen, not bothering to wipe away the tears that she couldn't stop from falling as she attempted to log into the hospital's CCTV. From there, she rewound the feed to a couple of minutes ago and began to search through the corridors.
"Can someone explain what's going on, please?" Steve asked, more sternly than before, trying to find some answers that he wasn't getting.
However, the Black Widow wasn't listening, becoming even more panic-stricken with each passing second as she searched for you on the screen until finally, some air returned to her lungs as she found you walking down a deserted corridor, the footage a minute before the bond suddenly stopped. Natasha nearly smiled at seeing you there, even though she couldn't see the details of your face due to the low-quality cameras.
Tentatively, she, along with the rest of the Avengers, watched you walk down the corridor. Nat's eyes continued to glance at the time, watching it tick down as you approached the door at the end of the corridor, opened it and stepped in and then nothing as it was the time everything became silent. There were no further camera feeds in that room, you were simply there one minute and then something happened in the room and the bond was gone.
Natasha rested her head against the computer, closing her eyes to put all of her effort into shouting your name into the void in her mind but the only thing that responded was the silence and the disrupting shouting from the people around her was distracting.
"Everyone shut up!", she demanded with authority, thinking hard enough that it was beginning to form a migraine.
Glancing towards Clint, who looked just as worried as she felt, he asked, "Nothing? What about here?" he tapped against his chest, directly over his heart.
Natasha shook her head before a red suitcase caught her eye line. Taking a step towards Tony she demanded, "Give me the iron man suit".
Tony scoffed, "What? Not until you explain what's happening- wait what the fuck?!"
"GIVE ME THE SUIT!", Natasha had lost all composure, not thinking clearly, only thinking about you as a priority as she reached into her holster and within half a second, had her gun pointed towards Tony's head.
"Natasha, put the gun down, NOW.", Steve demanded, taking a step towards the billionaire like he was going to stand in front of the gun for his friend.
Nat began to cry, still mumbling, "Give me the suit Tony", the hand holding the gun still visibly shaking. Clin stepped directly in the path between the gun and Tony before Steve could, he held up his hands for good measure to show he didn't mean any harm.
"Nat listen to me", his voice was calm and low as he spoke, like he was talking to a frightened animal. "Even if you wear his iron man suit, I don't think you're in the right mindset to be by yourself so this is what's going to happen. You're going to lose the gun and I'm going to sit in the pilot seat and fly us to her, we'll be there in a couple of hours but you need to calm down right now, this jet is too small to be firing guns and you know it".
She knew he was right, thankful that she had a friend to talk some sense into her as she lowered the gun, nodding her head towards Clint who rushed to the seat she was just sitting in, placing the headset over his head. Returning the gun back into her holster and watching as Clint increased the speed of the jet, she suddenly jumped as Bruce began talking to her.
"How long has it been since you found her?" he offered her a warm drink that she hadn't noticed him pour for her. Of course, Bruce was the first to suss out what was going on. Nat held the warm drink in her hands and forced herself to drink it, even though the nausea she felt was overwhelming, she needed to try and keep calm.
"Before I knew any of you...except for Clint", Natasha admitted quietly, sitting in one of the seats surrounding the edge of the Quinjet.
Steve sighed heavily, sitting next to her, now understanding just what was going on.
"Wait, so you've had a soulmate this entire time and you didn't tell any of us?" Tony asked, sounding slightly disheartened by the news.
"I had...I NEEDED to keep her safe Tony. Do you really think our jobs don't come without any repercussions?" Tony shivered at Nat's words, thinking about the number of times his soulmate Pepper had been caught in the crossfire due to him being Iron Man. "Exactly. I can't lose her, she's... the only person I have and the only one I let get close to me, she's my only one and now, she's not answering my calls, something is wrong, I know it is".
The Avengers all nodded their head solemnly, understanding why she had reacted the way that she did. Tony sat opposite Nat, eyes full of remorse, "So is her name Milaya? That's what I heard you say earlier".
Natasha released a half-assed chuckle beneath her breath, "No that's just a nickname, her name is y/n", she allowed herself to smile for a split second, thinking about the first time she'd called you Milaya and how fond you were of it.
Then realisation dawned on her that this was really happening. Not only were you potentially in danger but now the Avengers also knew about you, could this potentially mean you didn't need to hide anymore? Shaking her head she left that thought for another time, needing to make sure you were ok first.
"Everyone strap in", Clint shouted over his shoulder, the jet beginning to reach it's maximum speed. Natasha attached the buckles around herself tightly, dropping her head back and continued to try and shout down the bond.
Clint landed in the near-empty car park in record timing much to Natasha's relief, who hardly waited for the doors to fully open before jumping down onto the tarmac. Even though the car park was bare for vehicles, there was still a scattering of people gathered around, visiting people in the hospital or using the facilities which meant, as the Avengers were suddenly in this forgotten-about town, it caught their attention quickly, shouts and whispers from every direction.
This didn't stop the group however as they followed Natasha into the building, her footsteps fierce and confident, face full of determination, all tears gone as anger replaced those feelings. There wasn't any immediate sigh of distress as they entered the building, and no sign of an attack still or police presence.
The reception lay straight ahead, and immediately, Natasha knew that it was the receptionist Bonnie behind the counter, someone you had talked about with affection on many occasions and it dawned on the assassin that she probably knew every professional in this small building.
Trying to not sound too aggressive but still holding the urgent tone, Natasha stopped before the counter, staring at Bonnie who looked up with comically wide eyes, glancing at each of the Avengers before looking back at Black Widow as she began speaking, "Y/N, where is she?"
Bonnie frowned in bewilderment, "Nurse Y/N? But how did you know-"
Natasha's heart dropped painfully as the receptionist seemed to confirm that something had happened. Beginning to lose her composure once more, her voice raised in noise level as she demanded, "Where is she? Is she even here? Did someone take her? Is she dead-?"
Bonnie quickly cut off Natasha's rant, standing from her seat with raised hands, "No! No she's not dead but something did happen earlier, let me take you to her".
She directed the group down a corridor, half running with how fast Natasha was trying to walk in front of her, ignoring the stares from the other patients and professionals. As they approached a series of windowed rooms, Bonnie began to explain what had happened.
"A ... a guy came in earlier, we think he snuck through the basement but he was caught stealing meds which were where Nurse Y/N was stationed and...she found him in the cupboard and he hit her hard across the head, by the time we found her, the guy was gone and she was unconscious on the floor. The doctors are still waiting for her to wake up was the last update that I had".
Natasha was reeling from the information, knees momentarily buckling but Clint was right behind her, hand under her arm to keep her upright and moving. You were alive, that was the information that alarmed through her mind, you were unconscious that was why she couldn't feel the concentration, it wasn't like you were asleep and could wake at any time, you'd been forcibly put to sleep, your body healing and cold.
Then there was the fact that someone had actually hurt and injured HER soulmate, right now, you were her priority but the second you were feeling better, nothing and no law would stop Natasha from hunting this guy down.
Suddenly Bonnie stopped in front of a large window that looked into a private room that had light filtering through the blinds causing an orange hue to shift across where you lay in the hospital bed in the centre of the room. There were a few machines scattered around that were monitoring your observations and a nurse recording the results standing next to the bed.
Natasha had to use every part of her training to try and hold back the audible sob that threatened to explode from her mouth as she didn't wait for permission to walk into the room. However, no one seemed to have the courage to even question the Avenger, all looking confused between her and the other heroes, nurses and healthcare assistants gathering to see what all the commotion was about.
The nurse turned, hearing someone else entering to room, her eyes widening just as exaggeratedly as Bonnie's and Natasha was quick to read his name tag, Chris. Internally she smiled knowing you were in good hands, Chris had a reputation at the hospital for his quality of care and that you and he were close friends, it must have been hard for him to then stay professional and give care for his friends.
"Is...Is she ok?" Natasha finally found her tongue to ask the Nurse, her green eyes wandering over every inch of your body. You looked almost peaceful, except for the fact that you were still in your Nurse tunic and there was a bandage plastered to your forehead.
A wave of nauseous anger rushed through Nat's body but she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. Chris's full attention was now on the Avenger as he answered her question with a surprisingly sturdy tone considering he was talking to one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. "She's had several stitches to close the injury, we found a metal pole next to her covered in blood so she took a strong hit. Thankfully there's no internal damage shown in the scans and she's yet to wake up but her observations have remained stable. Even if she wakes, she'll need to stay for a day or so to fully assess the damage."
The red-haired woman nodded, feeling somewhat relieved hearing this.
"Natasha?" Clint asked from the doorway having heard what Chris had said, waiting until the assassin turned towards him before continuing. "You good? We'll get out of here to give you some space just... keep in touch, will you? Let us know when she wakes up and-", his voice lowered dangerously low, "we'll find the guy".
Natasha nodded thankfully, even though she wanted to find whoever did this, the promising look in Clint's eyes she knew to trust that he had it covered. The rest of the Avengers shuffled back down the corridor, waving at the onlookers, thankfully taking the spotlight off of Natasha for a second as she attempted to step closer to you.
With no one there to hold her up, her knees buckled once more with overwhelming relief pulsing through her heart as she reached for your hand, her eyes filling with tears at the warm skin of your hand against yours, finally feeling grounded and connected to you.
Chris was quick to provide a chair for the Assassin, leaving the two of you and ushering away the spectators through the window, Natasha decided she would find him later to thank him for this.
"Oh Milaya," Natasha sighed as her face searched yours, hand gripping yours before stroking the back with his thumb.
The movement seemed to stir something with you as your fingers twitched in her grasp, a moan releasing from your mouth, eyes flicking beneath your still-closed eyelids. It almost felt like instinct for you to turn your head towards Natasha, feeling her presence there as the further you stirred, the mouth the empty hole in Natasha's chest filled with your bond.
"Natasha?" you whispered, voice thick and slurring slightly.
Nat brushed her other hand across your cheek, leaning down to lightly kiss the part of your temple that wasn't covered in bandages, mumbling "I'm here, baby". For this once, she absolutely didn't care who could see the two of you, Natasha allowed herself to be vulnerable for a moment, she thought she'd lost you, there was no way she was wasting another moment again.
A further hour passed before you moved again, sucking in a deep breath to properly fill your lungs and frowning, feeling something was off but not sure what. Blinking open your eyes, you flinched at the bright light that sent pain sparking across your head.
"Milaya?", Natasha whispered, careful to keep the noise down to not affect your sensitive senses. Her thumb brushed across your soft cheek, trying to help you arouse so she could see your pretty eyes.
"Nat?" you asked again, voice still sounding just as slurred and thick as before, "Am I dreaming?".
Eventually, your eyes opened, squinting against the orange light still pouring through the outside window. Even though the doctors had been giving you pain relief through your IV that was attached to the back of your hand that Natasha wasn't holding, you were still sensitive to the lingering concussion.
"There are those pretty eyes", Natasha praised as you looked at her hovering over you. "You aren't dreaming, you're ok, you're safe".
"What- What's going on?" you asked, feeling like something was wrong but not quite understanding just yet. You were confused and dazed still. Attempting to sit up, you frowned as your soulmate pushed against your shoulders, keeping you lying but you were only attempting to be closer to her.
"Hey it's ok, you don't need to get up, you need to rest", Nat encouraged, watching as you looked down at your body, observing the leads attached to various areas to monitor your observations, the cannula in your hand to the heavy feeling in your head, lifting said hand to brush over the soft material of the bandage on your head. Natasha cupped your hand and pulled it away from your injury, "Be careful my love, you've been hurt, don't touch it".
"I've been hurt?" you asked with confusion but the slur was very much still evident, you still need to rest and recover.
"Yeah, do you ... remember anything that's happened? Do you know what day it is?" Natasha asked, staring down worriedly at you.
You tried to think hard about today but your mind continued to be blank with delirium. "Uh... I don't remember anything. I feel like I'm floating through space", you admitted but then something dawned on you, even though you couldn't name what day it was, you knew you were at work, having been in this particular room hundreds of times and Natasha was definitely next to you right now, still dressed in her Black Widow uniform. Eyes flicking over her shoulder to the indoor window, you could see some of your colleagues walking around. "You're here! In front of everyone, they'll see you, Natasha!"
Natasha's eyes softened, hands coming up to cradle your face, "Shhh Milaya, I don't care that they've seen me. Baby, I thought you were dead." Her eyes dropped from yours to stare at your name tag that was clipped to your tunic, willing the heavy emotions to remain at bay, you needed to rest and she didn't want to make you more upset. "We were talking and then you were silent but usually, I can feel you even when you're asleep but there was nothing and I couldn't... I had to come here, I thought you were in danger, I mean, you were in danger! Apparently, some asshole was stealing med and you found him so he hit you with a metal bar".
"I'm sorry I scared you", you responded, feeling overwhelming guilt over the situation but still feeling completely dazed and out of it. "Will you stay?" you asked hopefully, reaching up to touch her cheek gently.
"I'm not leaving your side", Natasha confirmed.
"Good". The two of you stayed silent for a few minutes as the assassin returned to sitting in her seat, lifting your hand to place it back against her cheek so she could nuzzle into it. You smiled at her softness, something she didn't often like to display before something else caught your eye, your fingers nimbly grasping her chin to turn her head away from you so you could look at her chin, seeing the painful bruise there, "I thought it was just a scratch you got on this mission?" you asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Ah, so you do remember somethings", Natasha smirked, referring to the conversation the two of you were having before you were attacked.
"Oh little bits," you admitted, "I bet we look like a right pair", you joked, eyes closing with heaviness suddenly exhausted.
"Get some sleep Milaya", Natasha muttered against the palm of your hand.
I love you, you spoke into the mind connection, feeling heat spreading across your chest with love.
Natasha had never heard such beautiful words before, sighing and leaning over before she could stop herself to kiss your lips softly, audibly whispering, "I love you too".
Thankfully, 24 hours later you were discharged and finally bombarded by your friends and colleagues that were swiftly brushed away by Natasha as she led you towards the exit, but she quickly admitted that her phone had been going off constantly from the Avengers, wanting to invite you over soon to be introduced.
It took Clint three hours to find the man responsible for the attack and had been keeping him in a secret holding for Natasha, not that the woman was rushing to leave your side any time soon.
The days passed by and you were forced to rest by both the Doctor and Natasha, who was quick to do anything and everything for you and you were more than thankful, the symptoms of the concussion taking longer than you'd anticipated to wear off.
Finally, you felt strong enough to climb out of bed, the smell of food being cooked coming from the kitchen had your stomach growling in hunger as you quickly had a shower, still careful of the plaster over your stitches but the massive bandage had been removed thankfully.
After dressing in only an oversized top and shorts, you smiled lovingly at the sight of Natasha in the kitchen, standing in dark joggers and a thin grey vest, her hands moving skillfully over the food that was cooking, toast popping up in the toaster.
You began to move forward with the plan to help her by buttering the toast, greeting her with a "Hello beautiful", and reaching for the knife and butter. However, your attempts were futile as Natasha snatched away the utensil.
"Nope, I'm doing that, go and sit down please", she began moving away from you, to continue with her cooking.
Rolling your eyes, you simply found another butter knife from the drawer and moved back to the toast, "I'm fine! I can butter my own toast, Natasha".
Once again, she simply removed the knife from your hand, shaking her head with a throaty laugh, "I'm looking after you so go and sit down".
"You have looked after me and I'm feeling almost normal except for the stitches", you admitted, pulling the toast over from the toaster and placing it onto the plate, moving closer to Nat to try and snatch the knives out of her hand but she held it at arm's length, still smirking. "You're relentless you know that?" you finally admit defeat, hand dropping to your side.
You watched her move for a moment, not planning on sitting down at all before stepping behind her as she stirred something in one of the pans. Your hands rested against her waist, fingers teasing along the hem of her vest to finally slip beneath and feel her warm, soft skin as your lips kissed along her exposed shoulder. You smiled against her, hearing the relaxed sigh escape her mouth.
"Hmm... and you are good at distractions", Natasha quipped over her shoulder, leaning into your touch.
"I've missed you," you admitted thoroughly, even though the two of you had been together for the last few days, due to you resting, you hadn't been able to be intimate and you missed her, especially being away for so long before the attack.
I've missed you too, Milaya. Natasha spoke through your mind, hands moving to rest over yours before turning slightly towards you. "But- I need you to eat first, your stomach growling woke me up this morning and I'd feel much more content knowing your belly as full before I take your clothes off".
You swallowed harshly at the end of her sentence, thankful that she wasn't fighting you on being intimate and you could deal with the request, kissing her mouth quickly before stepping back towards the table that was already set for the two of you to eat.
Sitting down, you watched mesmerised as she cooked, it looking almost like she was dancing around the kitchen, you knew you could never be as graceful as her but she also had extensive training which aided with her movements. Your core clenched though as her vest continued to ride up on her hips, exposing more of her stomach and you wanted nothing more than to lick the area.
"Having fun over there?" Natasha asked with a wicked smirk plastered on her beautiful face as she observed your wandering eyes and the shifting you were doing on the chair with your obvious arousal.
You bite your lip to hide your grin at being caught, not quite finding the words to respond that wasn't a request to take her clothes off so you distracted yourself by drinking the glass of water that was already placed on the table.
The two of you ate and chatted about Natasha's teammates, especially Tony who had sent about 50 invitations to you to join the numerous events that were coming up that the Avengers had to attend, hoping you would accept one so he could bombard you with questions.
You both had decided that you'd attend one eventually, increasing the security would be easier now as you didn't need to hide away. This new found freedom was exhilarating and you couldn't wait to walk down the street, holding her hand and showing everyone that she was yours.
Scrapping the plate clean and moaning at how good the food tasted, you stood to wash up the plates but once again, Natasha was grabbing the plates from your hands, moving over to the sink and placing them into the warm water.
"We can do that later", she informed, extending her slender hand for you to take and leading the way towards the bedroom. The two of you lay in the centre of the bed, your eyes were already heavy, you hadn't realised just how tired you were, with a full stomach and it had been the most you'd moved in days and had exhausted you quickly.
You felt bad having teased her and attempted to reach for her but she easily held down your arms, pulling your body against hers, fingers moving delicately across your scalp in a calming manner. "Get some sleep baby, I'll be here when you wake up".
When you finally woke, you were greeted with the peaceful sight of Natasha also sleeping, her features completely relaxed. Watching her for a moment, you carefully lifted your hand, attempting to tuck a strand of hair that had fallen across her face behind her ear but in a blink, your hand was stopped in midair as Natasha gripped your wrist.
You grinned as she opened her eyes, "It's really creepy when you do that".
Natasha's plump lips tilted into a smirk, her eyes flicking across your face as she bought your wrist up to her mouth, kissing the sensitive skin on the inside that sent a shiver through your spine. "You love how quick I am, really", she teased, her voice completely sultry to match the darkening look in her eyes.
"I love everything about you", you countered, leaning closer, finally closing the gap between your lips. Both of you released a heavy sigh, breaths fanning across each other's faces at finally touching. Your skin burned instantly, feeling like there were tiny electric pulses coming from wherever your skin met and it always felt like that when it was with your soulmate, intense and powerful.
Natasha broke the kiss first but only to move down your cheek, on her own journey to reach your lobe, nibbling the sensitive flesh between her teeth that caused a deep moan to vibrate in your chest as your fingers reached for the thin straps on her shoulders, efficiently pushing them down.
"My Milaya", Natasha whispered against your ear, her fingers, pushing underneath your shirt to do their own exploration. Just before the tips of your fingers began to graze over her now exposed breasts, she pushed you fully onto your back, easily rolling on top, straddling over your abdomen her shoulder-length hair falling and framing her face as she leaned over you. "Let me make you feel good".
You mewled in response, admiring the beauty that she was, the way her lips parted and shined in the light, the straps dropped off of her shoulder that allowed for her vest to drop and reveal her perked breasts that were desperate to be touched. A finger slid under your chin as she looked at you with a raised eyebrow.
"You're so beautiful Natalia", you praised, hoping your eyes showed as much affection as your words did. Natasha's shoulders visibly dropped with love at the use of her birth name before she was leaning over you and kissing you fiercely, desperately moving, tongue pushing and flicking against your own, both moaning as you could taste each other.
Your hips lifted trying to find some friction but ended up grinding against Nat who groaned at the contact, her fingers suddenly reaching to grasp the edges of her vest, pausing the kiss for a second so she could remove the offensive material before moving back down to your mouth.
It felt so good to have her chest naked, rubbing against your t-shirt, that she was willing to be so bare before you. Your fingers caressed down her spine first before pulling around to the front, grazing over her scars and careful of her still healing bruised ribs that didn't seem to phase Nat anymore as you finally cupped her tits.
You felt the weight of them against your palm, squishing the beautiful flesh before tweaking her pretty nipples, earning a grind down from Nat's hips on your abdomen. Smiling against her mouth, you knew she had ultra-sensitive nipples which only made it more fun to play with them, hearing the desperate little moans she would release.
Suddenly, you were left cold and reaching for more as Nat sat up, pushing her hair out of her face as she looked down at you, "take off your clothes", she demanded whilst climbing off of your lap to remove her joggers speedily. You did as instructed, first removing your shirt and then your underwear before lying back down and Nat was straight away straddling your body again.
With no layers of material between the two of you, her bare, noticeably wet cunt now lay against your abdomen. Your hands went to her hips to grind her hips further against you, making her rock her body against yours as she leaned down once more to kiss you, your breasts rubbing together as her pussy rolled against your stomach.
"I'm supposed to be making you feel good", Nat whispered breathlessly against your neck of which she had moved to leave open-mouthed kisses against the sensitive skin.
You chuckled, releasing her hip with one hand to reach between your bodies to play with her nipple again, feeling the vibration of her moan melt into where your chests touched. "You are making me feel good", you responded just as breathlessly, rubbing your thighs together and feeling how wet you were.
The assassin suddenly moved, half climbing down your body and moving one of your legs over her hip, lowering her hips and then her cunt was stroking against yours. The two of you moaned, and your eyes flicked between her now swollen parted lips and where her hips began rolling against yours, your clit brushing against yours, both of your juices mixing together.
You matched her movements, gripping onto the leg that she had positioned over yours still, your hips rolling with hers, both gasping and mewling as your clits were rubbed and swiped against each other.
"Feel so good baby", Natasha praised, her hand coming up to cup against your breast, massaging the flesh slowly to match the thrusting of her hips. Your head flung back as she tweaked your pebbled nipples as she pressed especially hard against your clit. "Do you like when I rub on you Milaya?" she asked you, feeling her cunt pulse with arousal at seeing you experience such pleasure.
"Yes, feel so so good", you groaned, also reaching up to play with her tits, before sitting up slightly and pulling her face down, kissing her desperately as you both chased your highs, clits still sliding against one another with how wet you both were.
You were so close, your core beginning to tighten as you began to chant her name like a prayer, needing and wanting her, begging not to stop as Natasha was responding with just as much desperation.
Your cunt then started fluttering as you came, hands gripping onto Natasha hard enough that you were sure to leave bruises but it just felt so good that you couldn't stop. Natasha continued her movements for a few further minutes, finding her own release with a beautiful gasp.
You had planned for her to catch her breath but she was moving before you could comprehend that she was, your legs being pushed back against your chest to expose your soaked cunt to her as she lay down on her stomach, eyes connecting with yours as her mouth dropped to your pussy.
She began by licking up everything you had spilt, moaning at the taste of yours and her juices, tongue pushing through your folds before teasing your hole that was still twitching to be filled. Your hands replaced hers with holding up your leg, of which she gave a long lick up your entire middle as a reward, now freeing up her hands. With one, she spread you open, giving her the perfect view of your clit and hole and then she was diving right in, her lips sealing around your clit and sucking whilst two of her powerful fingers pushed inside of you, curling instantly about your special spot.
"Oh my god- Natasha!" you moaned, and you could feel her smiling against your bundle of nerves at your reaction, seeing your eyes closed to concentrate solely on the pleasure that was being given you. This was all you had wanted for weeks, to be with her, spend time touching and pleasuring each other's bodies, feel the bond glowing and strengthening with the time spent together.
Natasha's skilled tongue and fingers drew a toe-curling orgasm out of you, your back arching to try and grind your hips on her face. She had been a master at work, her eyes never leaving your face as she watched you go through all the stages of pleasure.
You were then rolling the two of you over, and you wanted nothing more than repay her with your tongue but you still had to be careful of the stitches on your forehead. So instead, you used your fingers in her soaking cunt and your mouth sucked leisurely on her nipples which had her clenching around your fingers, your thumb stroking against her throbbing clit.
"Milaya, don't stop", Natasha cried out, hands clenching into the sheet below, her thighs shaking around your hand, a pink glow to her cheeks as she watched you move from one breast to the next. You didn't stop, wouldn't stop until she was cuming around you and the way her walls were becoming tighter, her breaths coming out in short bursts you knew it would be soon.
"Cum for me 'Tasha, wanna hear your moans", you encouraged after releasing her nipple for a second and then going straight back to sucking it harshly into the back of your mouth.
"Ah! Yes-!", Nat's eyes rolled back as she began quivering around your fingers and you didn't stop your movements, making sure to draw out every ounce of pleasure that you could, until her hips jolted through overstimulation.
Easing your fingers out of you, you quickly drew them to your mouth, moaning at the sweet taste of her before she was sitting up and kissed your lips. Her tongue stroked against yours and you could taste yourself on her, and you hoped she could do the same taste herself on your mouth.
Then you were both collapsing into the middle of the bed, limbs tangled together facing one another and trying to catch your breaths, sweat glistening off of your bodies. Smiling softly at her beautiful expression, feeling her thumb stroke near to your stitches, you asked, "what's going on in that head of yours?"
"I'm just thankful you're here with me, I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you", she admitted in nothing more than a whispering volume.
Reaching to take her hand in your own, you kissed her knuckles, feeling the scars beneath your lips, "You don't ever have to worry about that baby".

Tumblr media
Steve remembered the day you’d met—for the second time, though he didn’t realize that right away—like it was tattooed on his brain. It was a few years after he’d come out of the ice and he had taken Tony’s advice to get out more, which had led him to the mall.
By some stroke of fate, it happened to be the day a pyromaniac with a flamethrower was there, but before he could even spring into action, you did, hands out in front of you and what seemed to be an invisible shield poised there, redirecting the flames and protecting the teenage movie theater employee that had nearly been caught in the crossfire.
A quick flick of your wrist knocked the attacker’s gun out of his hands, giving Steve the opportunity to step in and apprehend the guy.
You sat on a bench after, breathing heavy, a cut on your forehead from the shattered glass of the skylight. The paramedics were taking care of the civilians, and Steve wandered right over, impressed.
“Are you alright, ma’am?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just glad everyone is okay.” You told him, meeting his eyes.
He finally got a good look at you and froze, looking bewildered. A deer in headlights. “You’re…”
It was you. Of course it was you. Since the moment he’d been unfrozen, he’d been looking for you. His soulmate. The girl from the future that popped in on his twenty-fifth birthday, turned his whole life on its head, and then left without warning, hours after their first kiss. Back when he was five-foot-nothing with asthma and more medical conditions than he could even remember.
Back before he was anything.
And you’d loved him anyway. You’d given him the day of a lifetime and hope for not only a future, but for love. That someone could love him for him despite it all.
“I know.” You knew? “I…I don’t know what it is or…why I can do it.”
Your powers, you meant. You thought he was talking about your powers and not your name, which was burning a hole into his wrist beneath the thick leather band keeping it hidden.
“Right. Well, it’s…” He sighed, gathering his words, hiding the elation and pain behind a warm smile. “It’s a good thing you were here. I don’t have my shield on me.”
“Mine is built in.” You chuckled.
“You, uh…have a cut. On your forehead.”
“Oh, do I?” You reached up and found it with your fingers and they came away a bit bloody. “Shit.”
“Come on.” He offered you his hand and you took it, letting him lead you over to the counter of the theater. “Hi, do you have a first aid kit?”
“Yeah, of course.” The girl at the counter said, rushing to grab it.
Steve patched you up with gentle hands, off in a corner on your own. Staring up at him, you finally realized the obvious. This was Captain America. And he was using a careful finger to spread a triple antibiotic ointment on your cut.
Play it cool, (Y/N).
“Do you do this often? The hero thing?” Steve asked.
“No.” You shrugged. “Haven’t had much opportunity thankfully. I mean…I’d like to, I just didn’t know how to…get into it, I guess. Any email I sent to Stark or S.H.I.E.L.D. or whatever would end up on a slush pile.”
“Well, I’ve got some connections. If you’re seriously considering it. I can’t say I recommend it, but…Obviously you’ve got that protective instinct and you seem to work well under pressure.”
“My heart is about to leap out of my chest.” You admitted, laughing as he carefully laid a Bandaid over the cut, closing the kit.
“That makes two of us.”
“But, yeah, if you think I’m really cut out for it…I’d love to help.”
***
It was those words that sealed your fate. Three days later, someone from Stark Industries got in contact with you and before you knew it, you were on a plane to the Avengers’ remote facility in Upstate New York with a bag full of clothes, a handful of books, and a dream. You met the others, Wanda, Natasha, Bruce. Eventually Bucky came into the mix, too, Steve’s friend from before the ice who…had a staring problem, you were pretty sure. He kept looking at you, seemingly bewildered you were there.
You never did figure out why.
After a particularly tricky mission in rural Kentucky, you had landed yourself in the infirmary, taking a pretty long nap complete with an IV and a heartrate monitor.
It was Nat that found Steve in there, wringing his hands, tears in his eyes. It was the one secret he still had: you were his soulmate and wouldn’t know it for another six months. Your name had been etched onto his wrist for seventy years, through the transformation, through the ice, through everything.
“She’s gonna be okay, Steve. Bruce thinks she might wake up soon.” Nat comforted, sitting in the chair next to him. She put a hand on his shoulder, confused by her friend’s sudden mood.
“I know, I just…” He shook his head. “I’m worried about her is all.”
Nat pressed her lips together, tilting her head. “This seems like a little more than that. You wanna tell me what’s really going on?”
That was her super power, he remembered. She was a human lie detector.
“I can, just…not here.” Steve nodded, leading her out of the room, out of your earshot, but still in sight thanks to the soundproof windows.
Nat’s hands settled on her hips, waiting for an answer. Instead, Steve took the cuff off of his wrist and held it out to her, letting her read the letters that had been etched there for the better part of a century.
Her jaw dropped. She stammered, arms crossing. She met his eyes and when she saw the sadness there, the guilt and longing, her expression softened.
“I should have told her. A long time ago, I should have told her but I can’t. In six months, on her twenty-fifth, she’s going back in time to 1943 to meet me on mine. And it…didn’t seem like she knew until she was already there.”
“So you’ve just been holding it in this whole time?” Natasha asked. “You’ve been in love with her…”
“Since the forties, yeah.” Steve nodded. “My great lost love, as Tony likes to call her when he rags on the band I wear.”
“Does he know?”
“No. Just you. And Bucky.” Steve amended. “He was there when she…”
“Right. Weird.” Natasha let out a long sigh, looking through the window. “Well do you need any help with that? I can get some information out of her. I’ll be super subtle, I promise.”
“I don’t know. She probably thinks my soulmate is dead, too.”
“Ironic.”
“No kidding.” Steve sighed. “Well, I guess if she says anything, let me know. It’s kind of a relief someone else knows.”
“We’ll get you through it, Steve. Six more months. That’s nothing.”
“Yeah.” Steve gazed longingly through the window. “I’m gonna sit with her for a while. I don’t want her to wake up alone.”
He slinked back into the infirmary and sat in the chair beside your bed, watching your steady breaths and listening to the beeping of the heart monitor. Natasha watched him through the window, heart strings pulled as tight as they’d ever been. Her best friend was in love and there was almost nothing he could do about it.
***
Three months later, you, Steve, Bucky, Sam, and Nat got snowed in on a mission in Alaska. The little cabin you’d been sent to was unreachable by any of the jets the team could send and besides, it wasn’t worth the risk of Clint or someone getting stuck out there in this.
But despite the fireplace raging with fresh-chopped wood, you were still shivering, all wrapped up for the night.
Steve watched you, forlorn. Natasha nudged him, motioning towards you. He chuckled and shook his head. He couldn’t. Right? What, take advantage of you in your vulnerable state.
Bucky seemed to agree with Nat, grinning into his mug of coffee, giving him some caffeine for his night watch.
Steve got up off of his seat, walked towards the fireplace and adjusted the logs, adding another small one for good measure. He looked back at the others, who were aggressively encouraging him to go over to you, and gave in.
He knelt down in front of you, clearing his throat, which caused you to jolt awake.
“Is everything okay? Are we under attack?”
Steve chuckled. “No, uh, we’re all good. Are you cold?”
“Kind of, yeah.” You admitted. “I’ll be okay, though, I promise.”
“Do you…want some company?” He asked, unsure of how to word it. “I…run warm.”
“Do you mind?” You asked, sitting up a little.
His heart raced. This was going better than he thought. “Here, um…” He raised the blanket on top of you and wiggled in underneath you, letting you lead as the two of you settled.
“God, you do run warm.” You hummed, all but collapsing against him, a hand flat against his chest while you adjusted.
“I didn’t always.” He said, voice sincere. “Buck and I used to have to share a bed in the winter. It was brutal.”
“Sounds like it.”
“Yeah, he snores.” Steve joked, earning a laugh.
“Oh I know. I can hear him three doors down back at home.”
“And I can hear you from the other room!” Bucky called, sending you and Steve into a fit of giggles, like kids at a sleepover. “It’s a small cabin.”
You heard him and Sam devolve into a bickering match about the truth of whether or not Bucky actually snored that loud.
You looked up at Steve, asking “is it okay if I put my arm here?” while carefully draping an arm across him.
“Yeah, of course.” He nodded, leaning against the pillows and pulling the blanket up around your shoulders.
You rested your head on his firm chest, listening to the way his heart was racing. Cute.
The drowsiness took over almost immediately, his warmth lulling you to sleep after a long day undercover out in the snow. You were asleep in minutes, breaths slow and long and even.
But once he was absolutely sure you were out, Steve pressed the gentlest kiss to your forehead, grateful beyond words to have you in his arms again.
***
“You thought today was her birthday???” Natasha asked, incredulous in the kitchen.
“I got nervous!” Steve defended. “I saw it on her whiteboard in front of her door and I thought—”
“I think Scott wrote that the last time he was here. He keeps track of all of that.”
“Doesn’t surprise me.” Steve replied, shaking his head. “Well, does she have any birthday plans?”
“Yeah, Wanda and I are taking her out shopping this afternoon. Tony gave her his card. And then the party tomorrow night.”
Steve nodded. “Okay, good. That buys me some time.”
“You got a plan?”
“I’ve had a plan.” Steve admitted. “Been sitting on it for about seventy years, in fact.”
***
You got out of bed, got dressed, and headed to the mall with Natasha and Wanda. The same mall, in fact, that you and Steve had met in the first place.
“Where was it?” Wanda asked, wearing a very fashionable pair of shades.
“Right over there.” You pointed to the spot in front of the movie theater, up on the second floor of the mall. “Guy with a flamethrower and a dream. He’s in jail now.”
“Yeah, well, that’s what you get when you dream of arson.” Nat said, causing you and Wanda to laugh.
You shopped around for clothes, got some pretzels at the Wetzels, and window shopped. You already had what you were pretty sure you were going to wear the following night. It wasn’t every day one of the Avengers turned twenty five and met their soulmate. Tony was determined to make it a spectacle. He had a habit of doing that, it seemed.
In the food court, you seemed kind of down, chin resting against your fist. Wanda picked up on it first.
“It will all be okay, (Y/N). There is nothing to worry about.”
“Yeah, I know, I just…I don’t know. I’m stressed about it. Tomorrow I get the answer to the question I’ve been asking for twenty-five years. I just can’t believe it’s almost here. And…I don’t know, there’s just a lot of variables. What if they don’t like me?”
“Come on, (Y/N), what’s not to like?” Natasha said, digging her spoon into her blizzard from the Dairy Queen.
“I don’t know…It’s just a lot to think about.” You said, leaving it at that. You didn’t know how to begin to explain to them that you had feelings for someone already, one of your coworkers no less, and someone who already had a soulmate, despite the fact that he’d lost her nearly a century before.
You wondered why Steve never looked for her. Or maybe she’d passed before he even resurfaced. It was sad. A guy like that didn’t deserve the heartbreak. He deserved to be loved.
The three of you finished your shopping trip and then returned to the Facility, where you unpacked the new odds and ends you’d acquired. Steve checked on you again, offering you words of wisdom, a comforting hug. He promised that your soulmate would love you, whoever they were.
Little did you know, he already did.

Daffodils
summary: My mark, a bouquet of daffodils, is the one thing that I have had to cling to through the years. It’s a promise of eternal love, a partnership made by the gods. I thought I’d lost him in 1945 but here he is in 2023, alive and well (kinda).
pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader

For as long as I could remember I had daffodils on my left arm, the mark in the shape of four pale flowers in a bouquet being with me since birth. My mother would tell me stories of couples with matching marks, destined to find each other in this life and the next. She’d trace over her own mark that tied her to my father when she told me these stories and engrained the importance of the mark into me. “We are not whole until we find our match,” she’d say whilst sending my father loving glances that were returned by a wink and blown kisses. She would tell me about that the pull that you’d feel when you were close to your match. The proximity would tug at you like a string until you reached the end and met your match. My father would laugh while recalling how he nearly ran her over when he had been chasing that string, too caught up in the moment to look where he was going. Their situation was unusual in that he was a god, meaning he would live long after she died and would lose the one person made for him. It saddened her to know that one day she would leave her daughter and beloved husband behind but living with them for any length of time was enough for her.
When she did die, the mark on my father’s arm did not fade but morphed into a new one, presenting him with a new match to find. Somewhere out in the universe, my mother had been reborn and she would be waiting for him to find her. Gods had the special ability to have several matches throughout their lifetime as they lived far longer than humans. If they did have a human match, they would be reborn so the god and them could be together for eternity. My fate was undecided being half human, half god; I could either find a god match or a human match that would not be reborn. The cruel reality of my situation halted my efforts to find my match many times.
How could I go off and find them if I would only have a few decades with them?
How could I allow myself to feel this great love, only to have it ripped away and never to be felt again?
For many years, I chose not to look and pretended the daffodils were non-existent. Not only that but I couldn’t feel the pull to find my match for nearly two centuries. Curiosity, sure, drove most of my searching but that need to find my other half wasn’t there until 1917. I had been tending to my flower garden, trying to reconnect with the earth again when I felt the burn in my arm. The daffodils were glowing and burning from under my linen sleeve, telling me that my match had been born and from that day I felt the pull that my mother described. It drove me to leave my mountain cabin and find refuge in Brooklyn, New York.
Occasionally I would feel a burn in my mark, letting me know they were close but it never led anywhere. I’d search a twenty-foot radius when it’d happen only to turn up with nothing, no leads to who they might be. Even though I knew I was in the right city and that they would have a matching mark, I had nothing else to go off of, leaving me distraught and lost. Once again I had allowed myself to get my hopes up only for them to be violently destroyed. My father, ever the wise man, would try to console me, telling me that these things take time and that I needed to be patient. Both of us knew that the sudden shift in 1917 meant they were human and thus I would only have a limited amount of time with them. Both of us never spoke of that fact and tried to find relief in the fact that I finally had a lead, no matter how small.
Born March 10th, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, and would have a daffodil bouquet on their left arm.
The 20s came and went with no sign of them. The 30s passed in a blur with still nothing. The 40s were here and alas I had nothing. The first world war had not been a concern for me because they wouldn’t have been old enough to join however with the fast-approaching second world war, anxiety gripped me every day. If they were a man, they would surely be drafted and I would lose nearly any chance to meet them. On the other hand, if they were a woman, this world was not ready to welcome queer matches. Either way, I looked at it, nothing eased the fear and uncertainty that I lived with every day.
Laurel is the first person I told about a part of my dilemma. She doesn’t know about my god heritage but knows that I haven’t found my match yet and is becoming increasingly worried about the U.S. joining the war. The strawberry blonde laughs at my distressed expression as we pour out our hearts to each other in her small living room. She’d invited me over for dinner, at least that's what she claims but the coffee table full of wine and snacks led me to believe she needed a girl’s night.
“I don’t really know why you bother with all of that stuff. Just live and have fun,” she declares as she refills her wine, the sweet but tangy aroma filling the room, “Don’t go around checking everyone’s arm and worrying about it.”
“My parents had such a great story….”
She lets out a loud and dramatic sigh, “Yeah yeah whatever. Honey, you need to just go out, find yourself a man, and dance the night away. There are hundreds if not thousands of handsome men in uniforms milling around, I bet we could find you one to get your mind off of this mystery person.”
“Laurel I don’t want a pointless fling, you know that.”
Sitting up and leaning forward, her eyes get a mischievous look in them, “I have a date tomorrow night and he has a friend. We could make it a double date! Oh, honey, it would be so much fun!”
I agree rather unwilling and she jumps up, shrieking as she grabs the phone to call her date to tell him it’s now a double date.
Tumblr media
Waves of patchouli, carnation, and vanilla filter through Laurel’s bedroom as she dances around while getting ready. She had pretty much drowned herself and me in her perfume when I walked in, claiming it was the best perfume on the market.
“Sit we have to fix your hair,” demanding, she points to the vanity chair.
“There’s nothing wrong with my hair.”
Red nails grip my shoulders and push me to the chair, “You can’t go out with days old pin curls.”
“They’re not days old and it’s how Veronica Lake wears her hair,” I swat at her hands as she tries to put my hair into a chignon.
“Fine. Don’t complain to me if Steve doesn’t flirt with you.”
“Steve?”
“Oh yeah,” she’s moved on from my hair to lipstick, “You know my next-door neighbor, Steve, right? Well, his best friend is in town on leave and we may have run into each other a few days back.”
“Oh my god, Laurel! Why didn’t you tell me it was Steve?”
Shrugging her shoulders, “Why does it matter? He’s sweet and Bucky is to die for.”
“That’s the problem; he’s too sweet to be dragged around on a double date. I can’t go, I’m sorry,” I try to get up but she stops me with a very intense look on her face.
“No, you’re going and you’re going to flirt with sweet Steve and get your mind off of that stupid mark,” she shakes my left arm for dramatic effect in the mirror, “Now take this lipstick, put it on, and change into one of my dresses.”
“I’ll put on the lipstick but I’m not wearing on your dresses.”
“You’re wearing a rather boring day dress. Flash a little cleavage for once.”
I roll my eyes at her crude wording as I finish putting on the red lipstick. Sitting back to look at myself in the mirror fully, I hate to admit that she might be right. The plain blue dress only has a hint of embellishment with the pearls that trail from the waist to the hem. In comparison to the white floral dress that Laurel has on, I do blend in with the background but that might be in part due to her much more outgoing personality. She doses us with another round of perfume, satisfied that we’ll smell absolutely irresistible. There’s a knock at the front door, pausing both of us and she lets out a small shriek of glee.
“They’re here!”
She’s bouncing like a toddler at the door, stopping only to take a deep breath and calm herself before swinging the door wide open to reveal our dates for the night. Pressing superficial kisses to their cheeks, she steps aside to let them in and takes the flowers her date is holding to put into a vase. I emerge from the bedroom with the mark on my arm starting to burn and itch as I get closer to the trio. The men have their backs to me but I recognize the shorter one as Steve Rogers, the aforementioned next-door neighbor. Beside him is the flirt of Brooklyn, James Bucky Barnes dressed in his sergeant’s uniform with that dazzling smile directed at Laurel.
The burn in my arm becomes unbearable when my eyes land on them and whatever heartbeat I had becomes even more erratic as I realize what’s happening. I’ve met Steve several times and never once has my mark burned like this. Sure it might itch when I walk past his door every now and then but I brushed it off. The only other person that could be causing this is Bucky, my best friend’s date.  My heart stops altogether when he turns to greet me, extending out his hand in a true gentleman’s manner, “Hi I’m Bucky, it’s nice to meet the girl Laurel has told me so much about.”
I’m completely and uttered screwed.
“I hope it’s been all good things,” I take his hand whilst hiding my left arm behind my back. If he notices it, he doesn’t say but there’s a flash of discomfort on his face when we shake hands. Of course, the first time we touch sends sparks through us both as if to say “Hey look it’s your match! Congrats!” He withdraws his hand and his brilliant blue eyes linger on me for too long as Laurel tries to usher us all out so we can start the night.
Steve appears at my side, offering his arm, “It’s good to see you again. At least this time I’ll actually have someone to talk to.”
Grabbing my cardigan from the kitchen counter, I slip it on to hide my mark and take his arm while sending him a gentle smile, “I imagine you get dragged around on these dates a lot.” “Not as much as you’d think.”
“Well, I’m glad it’s you that I’ll be with all night. Given her track record, I was worried I might’ve ended up with a criminal or worse, a marine.”
He coughs to cover up his laugh, earning a look from the couple in front of us, “I feel like there’s a story there.”
“Not a very exciting one I’m afraid,” I whisper as we walk down the stairs of the apartment complex.
Laurel breaks our little moment, spinning to face us as we step out onto the sidewalk, “How about some dancing?”
“I second that,” the laugh that comes from Bucky is like a dagger tearing through me. That laugh is meant to be reserved for me. That smile is meant to be directed at me. That look in his eye is meant for me but he is not mine at this moment and I don’t know if he’ll ever be mine. The chemistry between them is real, clear to see by the way they melt into each other when they start to walk again. With her at his side, he would never see me or the mark I’m certain we both wear and I have to accept that.
Steve senses my hesitation and clears his throat to get my attention, “Is everything okay?”
“Oh yeah, just colder than I expected is all,” I force a smile as I reassure him, tucking into his side even though we’re similar in height.
It’s his turn to be nervous as we continue down the street, “I don’t want this to come out the wrong way but I saw your mark.”
I stiffen beside him, “What?”
“I really don’t mean to overstep but I think you should know he has the same one,” he says looking straight ahead and I follow his eye line to his best friend who is leaning down to whisper something into Laurel’s ear. Giggles erupt from her as the heat of my body disappears and anxiety takes over me. I can hear my heartbeat pound in my ears as my breathing starts to become labored. Steve fails to keep me upright as my knees go weak and I stumble. My knees and hands catch the rough pavement, ripping at the soft skin and causing blood to leak from the cuts. The streetlights are blurred around me and all of the noise surrounding us becomes muffled. Water starts to envelop me from within, making it harder to swim to the surface of my emotions. Pain rockets from the torn skin and the mark when a warm and strong body pulls me off the ground into them. The sleeves of my cardigan are bunched up, revealing stems of my daffodils as his hands tightly grip my biceps to keep me steady.
“Hey hey are you okay?” his angelic voice barely breaks through my haze and I can’t help the tears that escape from my eyes. Concern fills his face as he bends down to look me in the eye and survey my expression. The sparks from our handshake are tenfold now as he holds me, only fueling my anxiety until it’s unbearable. Pushing him away with the little strength I have, I stagger back and blindly wipe at them with the back of my hand.
“I’m so sorry. I have to go,” is the only thing I can muster the strength to say. Laurel calls after me as I take off down the street and disappear into a cab, leaving my unknown lover behind.
Tumblr media
In the weeks following the rather disastrous date, Laurel had tried to call and drop by to see how I was doing. The embarrassment of it all kept me from answering her calls and it took all that I had to not just open the door when she called my name. A few times at the start she’d even brought Steve and Bucky with her, trying to use them as bait to get me to open the door. Every time they’d leave, I’d slide down the door, hand clasped over my mouth to muffle the sobs. Every fiber in me burned to see him again, to feel his presence around me just one more time before I’d have to let him go.
At some point, Laurel stopped calling and coming over. She claimed she couldn’t handle the pain of trying to maintain our friendship anymore. It angered her that I wouldn’t open up about what happened that night or even try to get to know her new boyfriend better. She would go on and on about how it was ridiculous that I wanted to find my soulmate so badly but when it came to her, I wouldn’t be supportive. Hypocrite was one of her many names for me towards the end but I learned to ignore it. I knew that if I let her in, I would fold and tell her everything from the matching marks to who my parents were. I couldn’t bear to see her face when she realized that her new boyfriend was my soulmate.
When she returned to her normal life, Steve began to send me letters to update me on him and Bucky but they slowed as he became busier and busier with being Captain America. I could feel the intense trauma that Bucky experienced but reading about it in the letters, relief washed over me knowing that Steve was able to protect him when I could not. Eventually, they stopped altogether and my connection to Bucky ended completely, leaving me in the dark and alone with vague emotions that had no context.
1945 had been the worst year to date for me. I could still feel Bucky every now and then, waves of joy and desperation washing over me. It all stopped one bleak day in 1945. Collapsing to the ground as I did that day, I clutched my chest as my heart punched in my chest. The singe of my arm turned into a volcanic eruption whilst the pure terror Bucky felt tore me apart. Coworkers rushed to my side, all awaiting my reason for why I fell so suddenly. The same thing that kept me from speaking up during that date kept me from explaining.
“I don’t… I don’t know. I’m sorry, I….I need to go,” stuttering, I scrambled away to escape from my own personal ring of Hell.
Is this what it felt like to have your soulmate die?
Tumblr media
My father did everything he could to console me when I showed up at his door sobbing and exhausted. The woman my mother had been reborn into quickly left when she saw me and didn’t return until I left again. Later I found out he had sent her away so I wouldn’t have to see them together and worsen my suffering. He listened to me babble about Bucky and how I had just him slip through my fingers. Tender words and cups of tea were all he could offer me as I cried and mourned the death of my almost soulmate. He knew the pain that I felt, the deep ache that would never leave me but there was nothing he could do or say to ease it given that I had been cursed with only one soulmate. I’m not sure how long I stayed with him, a shell of my former self acting as a ghost in his home. I’m not even entirely sure how I made it back to the cabin I had left nearly 30 years earlier but one night I fell asleep by his fireplace and awoke in my cabin’s bedroom.
The morning sunlight breaks through the transparent curtains that I never remembered to close. The wood walls are filled with paintings and photographs of my loved ones through the years. Various bought and propagated plants clutter the shelves that line the top of the cabin walls. Even though I’m deep in the woods, having nature inside made me feel even more connected to the Earth I’ve walked for nearly 300 years. During my many years, the cabin has become overwhelmed with pieces I couldn’t possibly bear to part with. The Persian rug given to me by my grandmother keeps my feet warm as I slide off the loft bed and shuffle toward the kitchen. Piles of blankets made by past versions of me spill from the baskets that fail at keeping them under the bed. Space is limited in the cabin however being surrounded by the memories of my life provided me with comfort.
Steve’s letters are laying on the kitchen counter wrapped neatly with string next to the tea kettle. A small photo of him and Bucky peaks out from between the letters. He’d sent it in hopes it would entice me to write to the other man but it only brought more torment to my weakened heart. The stems of his daffodils make an appearance in the photo, confirming what Steve told me. No longer able to stand the angst regrowing inside, I nudge the photo back into the pile and push it away from me. Filling the tea kettle with water, I light the stove and place it on a burner. The familiar sounds of crackling fire and bubbling water make it to my ears however I can’t stop staring at the letters with numerous questions popping up in my mind.
Did Bucky know that Steve had written to me?
Did he know about that picture?
Had it been a spur-of-the-moment, taken just for me, or an old one Steve packed around?
Did Steve tell him about our marks? Who I really was to him?
Did he die knowing I was his soulmate or did he die thinking he was alone?
As if the gods knew I needed a break from my internal torture, the kettle whistles and washes away the cloud of questions that had floated in. With a cup of tea in my hands, I return to my bed and cover myself with an aging-knitted blanket, letting the warmth soothe the tension in my muscles. I had spent my life searching and praying for my soulmate but now that he was gone, I have no idea what to do. My life’s mission is gone, leaving me with the unanswered question of what to do next. Maintaining my garden and the forest around my cabin would provide only so much relief. I would have to find something else to occupy my time however, grieving will have to do until then.
A side effect of being half god is never really remembering what year it is. Already being a forgetful person, keeping track of the year is something I never get better at. Calendars are only helpful if one remembers to keep them updated and asking someone the year earns weird looks because why would someone forget what year it is. The only thing that helps with this is the weather and gardening. The changing weather patterns and sunlight schedules are my solutions because in order to garden, I have to know the seasons and thus I can kind of guess the year based on what season it is. Still, I get it wrong when my father visits, complaining that it’s been nearly 20 years since we last saw each other.
“Did you forget about me? It’s been two decades since I saw you last” he jokes, pulling me into a tight hug, “I missed you, dearest.”
“I know and I’m sorry. I just got so caught up and time slipped away,” I ramble on, trying to excuse my negligence.
He smiles and quietly shushes me before bending down to look at the daffodils I had been tending to when he arrived, “Seeing you happy again is worth the long wait. How are you doing?”
I shrug, “Better. It’s been difficult but things are getting better.”
“Good, good. Time really does heal our inner wounds.”
“Is it a time or do we just force ourselves to cope so we don’t seem lost in our grief? Because I have a hard time believing that the number of years passing by is the reason I don’t cry every day.”
“It may be both. I wouldn’t discount the work you’ve done to move on…”
My soft scoff stops him mid-sentence, “You make it sound like I lost my favorite book or something. I can’t ‘move on’ from this, I will always feel the hole he left. My heart will always ache in such a way that it eats me alive at night. There is a life and a love I will never have because my own fear stopped me from reaching out to him. I never got to see goodbye and now there’s a permanent absence, sudden, abrupt, and louder than anything could ever be. Yes the world kept spinning and life went on but it was never the same again. I will never be the same again.”
“Dearest you know I didn’t mean to diminish what you’re going through. I simply meant…” He tries to backtrack and save himself from my scorn.
“What you said and what you meant are two different things. Regardless I do not care to have this conversation,” I stop at the cabin’s door, turning to look over my shoulder at him, “You’re welcome to stay for dinner as long as you don’t bring him up again.”
Nodding, he follows me inside and continues to marvel at my green thumb. If I can’t nurture the future I want, I can at least care for my plants with the same passion.
Tumblr media
My braid falls down my back, flyaways and loose strands having escaped amid the fight. My chest is rising and falling quickly as I try to regain my breath, the braid slipping off to the side. Pieces too short to reach the back have fallen in my face, barely hiding the blood and cuts that mark my face. I take in shaky breaths as I kneel on the ground, my hands flat against the ground, trying to find stability.
The two men are watching me, their chests heaving in an effort from fighting me. Neither move, too caught up in observing every movement I make. I drag my hands to my knees as I sit back on my haunches.
“I come in peace. I swear,” I rasp as I try to steady myself, muscles screaming in agony.
The brunette scoffs at my weak white flag as the other man takes a careful step forward.
“What are you doing here?” the closer man asks.
I wipe at the blood dripping from my nose, “I could ask you two the same thing. They sent here me on a pre-sweep before Walker comes to do a photo shoot.”
The brunette shoves his gun into the waistband of his pants and shakes his head at my answer. The other name gives him a confused look, “Walker?”
“The son of bitch can’t even do his own missions without a babysitter,” the brunette mumbles while searching the room for what the three of us had been fighting over, a vial that has rolled dangerously close to me.
“Wait, so they send in a solo agent to do a clearance sweep for him?” the other man asks.
I spot the vial but push it toward the men, wanting nothing to do with it.
“Yeah, well he is Shield’s newest shiny toy, and they can’t afford to replace him if something were to happen. So they send in replaceable people like me to do the hard part, and he comes in during the last minute to take all the of the credit,” I laugh humorlessly. I make no attempt to move as my body starts to ache and fatigue sets in. I’ve been doing this for far too long with too little sleep and even less food and water. A part of me had hoped that they would’ve just killed me during the fight, so I could finally get some peace and get away from Walker. The life I once had was too far gone to even think about running away from it. There is nothing left for me at this point and giving the vial over might as well be the last nail in my coffin.
The brunette picks up the vial, eyeing me for just handing it over. His hands are covered by gloves by the whirring of mechanics is unmistakable. I know all too well who these two men are, and I also know I won’t survive another fight with them or the wrath of my“employers”.
Gesturing to the vial, I caught his eye, “I don’t want whatever the hell that is. I don’t even know what it is but if you’re here for it, it definitely can’t get into Walker’s hands. Just take it and get the hell out. He’ll be here in maybe 20 minutes and won’t exactly like seeing the Falcon and Winter Solider.”
Sam reaches a hand out to me, “You’re coming with us.”
I brush his hand away and shaking stand up, body crying out in protest. Going with them means more running, more fighting, and more hiding. I can’t take it anymore. I’d rather die at this point.
“No. Just get out. I won’t say anything about you two being here.”
Bucky speaks up, “And why would you do that?”
“You’re not the bad guys here. Just go. You don’t have much time,” I grumble, picking up my gun and reholstering it. My black suit is ripped and blood is gluing it to my skin. I’m sure I look like a complete mess but it matches how I feel.
Before anyone can speak, the static of a radio roars into the room. Sam picks up the radio and tosses it to me.
“Agent Echo, status update now!” a demanding voice comes through.
Rolling my eyes, I press the call button, “Pre sweep complete. I ran into some trouble but the building is clear.”
“Trouble?” the sneer can be heard through the garble of the radio.
“The building wasn’t exactly clear like you had said so yes I ran into some trouble but I’m fine thank you for asking.”
“Be at the meeting spot in 5 minutes.”
“Copy that,” I say like mentally screaming and imagining that I’m throwing the radio at the wall.
“Like I said,” I turn to Sam and Bucky, “you don’t have much time so get the hell out.”
My legs begin to shake as I try to take a step and I collapse to the floor, the world fading to nothing.
Tumblr media
Groaning, I try to move my body to regain feeling but something prevents me from doing so. My eyes blink rapidly to accommodate the light that blinds me and the two men come into view. I look down too fast, causing a head rush, but spot the chair that I’m bound to.
“Woah, woah, don’t move too fast,” Sam says as he approaches me and kneels down to meet my eye line.
“Walker wasn’t going to let you live after we took the vial so we took you with us,” he explains, no malicious is seen on his face.
I chuckle at his words and pull my head up to catch Bucky’s eyes. He’s still as stoic as before, with no emotion to be found on his face. Out of the corner of her eye, a blonde woman is sitting at a dimly lit table and a man wearing a massive fur-lined coat is sitting with her.
“The whole gang's back together I see.”
The blonde shifts in her chair, metal creaking against the cement floor, “What were you doing in that building?”
Sam stands and rejoins Bucky, pulling him aside into a hushed conversation. I glance over to the blonde who I recognize as Sharon Carter. The third man is, of course, the Baron, and I can’t help the laugh that threatens to bubble up.
“No reason”
“No reason?” Sharon repeats.
“Yep. No reason.”
“Who are you?”
“No one.”
The baron now looks impatient and uncrosses his legs to recross them.
“No one?”
I shrug, “Yep.”
Sharon huffs at my remark and looks to Bucky and Sam for some help.
“They called you Agent Echo,” Sam offers up.
“She can’t possibly be Agent Echo. She’s dead,” Sharon answers.
“Oh look at you with all the answers,” I try to make a fist to try and restart blood flow to my hand. I had landed in glass shards and there are pieces still embedded in my palm, too small to have shaken out.
“Try again. You’re not Agent Echo so who are you?” Sharon leans forward in her chair, causing the chair to groan again under the strain.
“A person,” slowly my fingers start to feel warm again and I move to try and wiggle my feet around.
A loud grunt is heard as the baron decides that a sudden show of aggression is needed to scare the truth out of me. He crosses the room in a few steps, heavy boots pounding the cement when he leans too close to me. All I do is raise my head and we are now inches from each other’s faces.
“I suggest you take a step back, Helmut,” I whisper as the baron tries to hold a solid facade.
Bucky is the one to pull the baron back, thoroughly over this show of dominance. He pushes him back towards his chair before retaking his place next to Sam.
“How do you know who he is?” questions Sam.
“That’s not important. Now what I want to know is how you got me out of there without a brigade of super soldiers on your tail.”
“We snuck out the way we came. It wasn’t hard.”
“I find that hard to believe.”
“Agent Echo was said to be a half god, half human,” Sharon now has all eyes on her, “Even when they found a body, it was highly likely that it wasn’t actually her. The body they found was missing their left arm so they couldn’t officially match the marks. The only way to tell if she really is Echo is to check her left arm.”
All eyes are on me now and the world starts to close in on me. The anxiety of having my mark revealed and the fear of unveiling my true identity is becoming too much to handle. My body can barely keep itself awake at this point and adding on this pressure is not making it any easier. Everyone is waiting for me to speak but nothing comes out.
“No,” my voice cracks as I try to get words out, “You will not put a hand on me.”
Sam goes to speak but is stopped by me choking out more words, “Whether or not I’m Agent Echo is not important. What is, is getting that vial out of here and getting into hiding. Walker will no doubt be ferocious that it’s missing so it’s only a matter of time before he comes busting down doors.”
“Check her arm,” Sharon tells Sam.
“Do not touch me,” I try to wiggle away from him but with the ropes, I have nowhere to go and no choice other than to let him pull my sleeve up.
My breathing is too quick, too close to having a full-blown panic attack when the daffodils are on display for everyone to see. I don’t miss the confused look Bucky is wearing as he narrows in on them, trying to put the pieces together in his head. He must have recognized me to some degree back during the fight but brushed it off until now, faced with the undeniable evidence that we do know each other.
Sharon approaches me, inspecting my mark, “How are you still alive?”
“Is that really the question you want to ask right now?”
“Yes now answer me.”
“It takes a lot more to kill someone like me. The body they found was an accident. I hadn’t planned on faking my death but it worked out to my benefit until Walker had the body reexamined and found out it wasn’t me. America needed their Agent Echo again so he tracked me down and brought me back. ”
Sharon rolls her eyes and tries to explain how implausible that sounds. Bucky silences her with a look as he walks toward me and starts to undo my binds. He doesn’t say a word while he does so and silently hopes that I won’t say anything either. With the final bind undone, it takes everything in me to not wrap him in my arms. Here he is; standing right in front of me alive is my soulmate. He stands and backs up to Sam before his resolve breaks and he unleashes the thousands of questions he has on me.
“Why’d you do that?” Sam whispers.
“I know her,” he whispers back.
Tumblr media
Sharon had left us and the men are all sitting around the table talking amongst themselves. I can hear the conversation from the bathroom as I gingerly pull the suit from my body. As it drops to the floor, it makes a disgusting wet sound and I nearly gag. The shower running covers the noise and I continue to take off the Shield-issued clothes. One by one the filthy garments leave my body until I’m left with nothing but my skin and wounds that definitely need tending to. I grimace at the black, blues, and yellows that litter my body and the caked blood that will take so much scrubbing to get off.
Stepping into the shower, I hiss at the feeling of warm water on my skin. There isn’t much in the shower aside from a bottle of 3 in 1 and an unused washcloth Sam gave to me. So starts the long process of ridding myself of blood and dirt. In slow circles, I scrub at the filth and watch as the muddy water flows down the drain. My hair is a problem I’m not sure I want to tackle but know I have to. Stiff fingers unravel the braid and tangles make it nearly impossible to do it gently. I wash what I can from it, knowing it won’t be nearly as clean as it could be.
After I finish washing what sins I can away, I step out of the shower and wrap a rough towel around my body. A fresh stack of clothes sits on the counter, thanks to Sharon. I know not to be ungrateful but I also don’t want to owe Sharon anything. However, my alternative is the bloody suit on the floor so the borrowed clothes will have to do.
I slip on the jeans and tug the red long-sleeve henley over my head, pulling my wet mass of hair out of the collar. There is a familiar scent on the shirt that I can’t place. Sitting on the toilet, I put socks on and lace up the boots Sharon definitely didn’t want to give up. I finger comb what tangles I can out and rebraid my hair, leaving a wet mark on my back but at least I have clean clothes on. Before leaving the bathroom, I grab my bloody suit and toss it into the main room’s fire without a word.
I take the open seat in between Sam and Bucky. Sam starts to question me about how I’m doing and how my shower was. I nod along politely and say my thanks for giving me a place to stay. My attention isn’t fully on Sam though, my mind drifting away to Walker and the possibility that he might find me. The baron says some off-handed comment causing me to look over at him and the smell hits me. With Bucky sitting right next to me, his cologne wafts past me and it’s the same as the shirt. He must have given Sharon one of his old shirts for me to change into.
“Wow, I haven’t seen that henley in forever, Buck,” Sam chuckles as he eyes the red henley I’m wearing.
“I forgot I even had it,” Bucky replies and gets up, “I’ll take first shift watch.”
“I will too,” I interject while Sam smirks to himself.
“Go right ahead,” he says before walking off into another room, the Baron following suit.
Bucky still hasn’t spoken or even looked at me and I’m growing restless, fingers tapping rapidly on my knee.
“How do I know you?” I almost don’t hear his quiet voice as he’s watching out the window with his back to me. The uncertainty in his voice pulls at my heart and that little string that ties us together in destiny. When the Winter Soldier first emerged, I felt a faint tug but never enough to convince me that he was still alive. From time to time, I would become overwhelmed with suffering and anger so deep, it would incapacitate me for hours. It wasn’t until it was revealed who the Winter Soldier really was that it all clicked into place for me. Even though I had worked with SHIELD for many years under Nick Fury, I refused to be a part of anything to do with super soldiers and Hydra. I would do anything else Fury needed of me but that was my one condition; I will be completely in the dark about Hydra and super soldiers. Walker, however, became too greedy to find the serum and dragged me back into the ring against my will. God or not, he had beaten me down until I was a shell of the agent I had been before. Now face to face with Bucky, I’m beating myself up internally for not learning more about Hydra. Had I known maybe I would’ve been able to save him sooner. “Do you want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Do you remember a girl named Laurel?”
He’s turned to face me, leaning against the window, and nods.
“What about the double date in 1943? You’d come home on leave and she wanted to go on a double date with Steve and one of her friends.”
He says my name with such disbelief that I’m here in front of me, “Your mark. That’s the reason you ran away that night?”
“I couldn’t tell you after I saw how well you two got along. It didn’t feel right to me to break up your relationship, especially with how enamored she was with you.”
“Did you even take into consideration what I might have wanted?”
“It wouldn’t have been fair…”
His booming voice halts me mid-sentence, “No what wasn’t fair was to run from me and not even try to tell me. When we shook hands, I knew there was something between us and then when I picked you up, I felt that spark again. I tried to go after you, to visit you. Hell, I even had Steve write to you to make sure you were okay. I tried but you didn’t.”
“You have no idea what I’ve done to find you,” standing up from the table, my voice wavers with tears, “I waited for 200 years to feel you be born and then I had to wait another 26 years to meet only to see you with another girl. I ran because I couldn’t stand to watch you and Laurel together after waiting so long to finally meet you. When I finally worked up the courage to find you again, I felt you die and then I felt only pain for the next 70 years. It consumed me until I had nothing left. Working as Agent Echo was about the only thing that kept me from losing it all and just ending it. Do you have any idea what it feels like to be in misery that long?”
“You felt me die?”
“Back in 1945 when you fell from the train. Obviously, I know now that you didn’t die but it most certainly felt that way.”
“And you felt everything when I was…” he trails off, unable to say the words so I fill in for him.
“Yes, even then I went through it all. I met Steve again before everything and he told me about it and what really happened.”
There’s a spilt second of silence as he mulls over my words. My eyes fall to his left arm where his matching mark should be but it’s been replaced with metal.
“He never told me about that.”
“Because I asked him not to. I wasn’t sure if you would be ready or even want to see me so I asked him to wait. I had it all planned out; he was going to take you on a trip to my cabin under the guise of a friend’s weekend so I could tell you everything. We agreed that it would be better if he brought you to me rather than me just springing it all on you without warning. Then the blip and Thanos happened and he was gone.”
Once again he doesn’t respond right away while his jaw clenches and tears brim his eyes. Hesitantly I make my way to him slowly so I don’t scare him. After the nearly 80 years it had been since I last saw him, so much had changed in him but the one thing that never left is the ghost of his boyish smile. Even now as he tries to hold back the storm of emotions inside, the wrinkles from years of smiling and laughter are visible.
My hand lands on his cheek, guiding him to look at me, “I’m sorry that I ran and that I didn’t try harder to find you but I’m here now and I’ll stay by your side. I will love you until the sky above darkens and even then I’ll stay by your side in the afterglow.”
Bucky drops his forehead to mine and his arms cradle my face while the tears fall freely now, “Please don’t leave again.”
“I won’t.”

Open Wounds - 20
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: angst and violence and stuff
A/N: It’s been a hot minute. Sorry about that.
Tumblr media
They were wrong.
You weren’t there. Oh, you had been at some point. Your blood splashed around the lab and one of the training rooms was proof of that, but you were long gone by the time they arrived at the base.
A contingent of lesser Hydra fodder had been left to greet them, slow them down. Tony and his AI were combing through the files looking for some indication of where they had taken you while the rest of them just waited.
Bucky had gone back to not speaking other than to convey necessary information about new injuries and your emotional state. He stayed buried in your bond, forcing himself to feel the extent of your every feeling. It was the least he could do, a punishment far less than he deserved. And there in the midst of his teammates, his friends, his family, it was Wade that realized what he was doing.
“She let them capture her to protect you,” the mercenary said, announcing his presence as he stepped into the room where Bucky was pummeling a punching bag.
Guilt stabbed through him and he did his best to push past it. “I’m aware.”
“That doesn’t make it your fault.”
Bucky darted a glance to your best friend. Wade leaned against the wall, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. A bulky sweater hung loose on his frame. “Leave it, Wilson.”
Wade pursed his lips. “No. I don’t think I will. There’s something you need to understand about our princess. She’s expendable.”
“Excuse me?” The tone was quiet, deadly, daring the merc to repeat what he’d just said.
“Easy, buttercup.” He held up his hands in a gesture of innocence. “That’s her opinion. Not mine.”
Bucky growled in annoyance.
Wade sighed. “Just listen, okay? She will place herself at risk to save anyone she deems worthy of it. If she gets injured in the act, well that’s just the price to be paid. But if she cares about you? If you’re lucky enough to be considered hers? She would burn the world down for you.”
He ran a hand over his head. “Look, what I’m trying to say is this was her choice. She decided you were worth more than her and she acted accordingly. And you need to face the possibility that she may do it again.”
Bucky’s brow furrowed. “What are you trying to say, Wade? What do you know?”
The merc licked his lips. “I’m just saying that her choices are just that. Her choices. You can’t take on the blame for that. Nothing she does is your fault. Say for instance, she decided to work for Hydra because they threatened her family. That wouldn’t be on you. She wouldn’t want you to blame yourself.”
Before Wade took his next breath, Bucky slammed him against the wall and held him in place with an arm across his throat. “Speak, Wilson.”
“Okay, okay.” Wade gripped the arm holding him place, but didn’t try to get away. He knew it was pointless. “There’s been some chatter. Word is Nicto is active again. Hydra is advertising her services.”
Bucky backed away as fear flooded through him, his eyes wide in disbelief. “No. She wouldn’t.”
Wade’s features contorted into a pained expression. “She may not have a choice, Barnes. Just because they couldn’t break her before doesn’t mean they didn’t succeed this time. She’s the toughest woman I know but we need to consider the possibility that she’s not herself anymore.”
Bucky’s jaw ached as he clenched his teeth. He dropped his head and linked his hands together on the back of his neck. He didn’t want to think about the possibility that you were Hydra’s. That he’d lost you. He’d purposefully been avoiding thoughts of what it meant that the only feeling he’d been picking up from you recently was anger. Waves of it in varying degrees but it was constant. So strong it seemed to be overwhelming anything else you may have been feeling.
A hand dropped on his shoulder and he jerked away. “Don’t.” He couldn’t stand to be comforted right now. He didn’t deserve it as long as you were gone.
Tumblr media
You’d been pissed since you woke up in the lab. Well, that wasn’t precisely true. At first you were incredibly relieved to find you were still yourself. In fact, you couldn’t figure out what the hell they’d done to you. Maybe it had been a scare tactic. You wouldn’t put it past Strucker in the least.
“Ah, she wakes.” Speak of the devil.
“I am sure you are wondering what improvements we made while you slept.” He held up a small remote with three buttons before slipping it back into his pocket.
You frowned in confusion.
“You see, as much as I would like to believe what you say, I’m afraid I don’t trust you. You have betrayed us before, after all. So, some assurance of your compliance was required.” His lips twisted into a sneer as he stared down at you.
Your hands itched to curl around his throat. “Spit it out, Stucker.”
His gaze turned hard. “Perhaps a demonstration is in order.” He slipped a hand into the pocket where he’d placed the remote.
A moment later lightning shot through your brain. As your entire focus became your pain, you twitched and pulled against your restraints. The pain stopped as suddenly as it came though ghosts of it continued to travel through your body causing you to continue twitching.
“You will comply or you will suffer. And if you resist despite this, you will die.” He pulled the remote out to show you again and pressed on the bottom button causing a red light to flash. “All I have to do is hold this button for ten seconds and the chip we put in your brain will explode.”
Your heart raced as he released the button at the last second. You didn’t want to die but maybe that would be the better option. Not that Strucker would make it that easy.
To prove your point, he leaned forward so he could speak right into your ear. “And should you prove uncooperative enough that I am forced to kill you, I will detonate the chip that remains in your lover’s brain.”
You froze. No. That was a lie. It had to be.
Strucker straightened and stepped away from the table to put some space between you. “You think I lie. That if there was a chip in Soldat’s brain we would have already activated it. Pierce does not wish to do so until we are certain he can not be returned to our ranks. But things happen.”
His eyes studied you for a moment. “Rest assured, Nicto. If you fall, so does Soldat.”
Your training began the next day. At first, you attempted to show mercy, to keep from killing or maiming the others you fought against. Every time you did, Strucker fried your brain. The bastard.
So, you forced yourself to turn into the soldier they wanted you to be. You performed as ordered. You broke bones, knocked them out, slit throats, put bullets into brains. You comforted yourself with the knowledge that unlike you, most of them were mindless killing machines. The ones that weren’t, wanted to be here. They volunteered to be part of Hydra’s ranks. Every death or dismemberment was one less soldier killing for Hydra.
And when you weren’t training, you were plotting a way to get that damned remote and escape. Strucker taunted you with it enough, you always knew right where it was. But then he’d just kill Bucky. Gods, you had no idea how you getting out of this mess with both you and your soulmate breathing.
You’d finished another day of mindless fighting and were sitting in the lab while they drew blood and checked your vitals. At least the doctor working on you today was one of the decent ones. She didn’t inflict pain just to do it and she kept up mindless chatter as she worked as if she was trying to make you forget where you were.
When Strucker walked in the room both of you froze. He smirked before dismissing the two techs that had been in the room with you. They hurried out the door.
“How is our asset, doctor?” he asked.
She cleared her throat. “All vitals are within normal levels. The last labs showed promise. We’ll have the new numbers tomorrow.”
“Very good. You do your job very well, Dr. Gannon. You are a true asset to Hydra.” He pulled a pistol from his belt and handed it to you.
You took it automatically and frowned at him, your brow furrowed.
“Kill her,” he ordered.
You arched a brow but didn’t question him. You were too used to Hydra’s fucked up games to be that surprised.
“What?” The doctor whimpered. Her gaze moved from Strucker to you. “Please don’t. My daughter.”
You glanced at the picture of the girl pinned to her workstation and clenched your teeth. You didn’t want to do this. This wasn’t a soldier hell bent on hurting you. This was a mother with a little girl waiting for her to come home. Ruby. The girl’s name was Ruby, you remembered.
You closed your eyes as she continued to plead with both you and your master. You forced yourself to remember that this was also one of the doctors that injected your veins full of chemicals that burned you from the inside out. That tortured you in the name of science. That volunteered to work for the bad guys. The fact that she was friendlier when she did it didn’t make any difference.
“Now, Nicto.”
In one smooth motion you opened your eyes, raised the gun, and fired.

Focus On My Heart (peter parker)

WARNINGS(S)‧₊˚ Sensory overload
| masterlist | (requests open) (PLS REQUESTT) |
You gave the person behind you ten seconds to stop clicking their pen right behind your head. When you got to ten, you turned around to tell them to stop, but it wasn't them. Confused, you looked around, still hearing the sound, but the person behind you was asleep.
Your breathing quickened when it continued. Other sounds started to force their way through your ears. Someone was drumming their nails on the desk, the crinkling of a water bottle. Your breathing quickened when it continued, the ticking of the clock, then, worst of all, the bell.
The bell was defining. It rang through your ears aggressively, signaling it was time to leave and leaving you to stumble through the door.
The world was too loud, you could hear way too much. Every heartbeat, every whisper, every breath, every footstep, and more traveled through your senses at once.
Thump.
You covered your ears and could feel the tears in your eyes despite them being clenched shut. It was overwhelming your senses. Your heartbeat the fastest of them all. You could hear the blood rushing through your head and body.
The fly was buzzing across the hall, the sound of the lightbulb as the energy zapped rapidly, every footstep, every scratch, every heartbeat, every breath, every-
"Hey," a panicked voice stood out in the sea of noises. You tried to calm down, not wanting any attention, but you couldn't steady your breathing; it was out of control.
Scratch.
The feeling of hands on your shoulders shook you into a panicked state, the friction against your clothing onto your skin felt suffocating.
Thump
"Hey, it's ok," It was the voice again. Attempting to steady your breathing, you listened the best you could, "I know it's hard, and it feels like everything is overwhelming, but I need you to focus on my voice."
You clenched your fists, trying your hardest to focus.
Tick, tick, tick…
"Please," they said, pulling your hands out of their clenched form and holding them lightly. "Focus on me, find my heartbeat." They brought your hand to their chest.
The second your hand touched their chest, you felt everything inside: heartbeat, breathing, the blood running through their veins, everything. You couldn't do it. The best you could do was shake your head. You couldn't; there were too many people, too many sounds, too many everything.
"You need to focus, their voice grew desperate. "You can feel everything, and I know, but your hand is directly on my heart, find it and focus, it'll help."
In all of the chaos going on inside your head, you directed all your energy to your palm through your pounding headache. You had to find it, to focus.
Tick, tick…
Scratch…
Buzz…
Thump,
Thump, There.
The fight to slow down your breathing became easier every time you sensed a beat.
"That's it," you then recognized the voice as Peter. "Stay focused on my heart."
You would never tell him, but his voice calmed you down more than the sound of his heart ever could.
"Breathe with me." He whispered, “You can open your eyes, the lights are off.”
The thought of opening your eyes terrified you, to go through the same thing again. You shook your head slowly in protest, trying to keep the composure you fought so hard to gain.
You felt a hand cup over your eyes, "Start small."
Your eyelashes brushed Peter's palm as you opened your eyes, through a small crack of his fingers, you could see his brown eyes full of concern. How did he know what to do? So many questions filled your brain as you became more aware of your surroundings. You were in a dark and empty classroom.
Peter noticed that you were trying to look around, "I'm gonna bring my hand down."
You nodded, and he took it down slowly. His eyes met yours in the dark. His hair was slightly messed up. His facial expression was twisted into something you've never seen on him, before you could figure it out, he looked down.
You almost laughed at the possibility of someone walking in and seeing this; they would definitely get the wrong idea. But your smirk fell once you followed Peter's gaze to his now bloody shirt.
You looked down at your palms, and blood flowed out of indents made by your nails. You didn't notice that you were crying until he brought his hand to your face to wipe your cheek. Looked up again, his face read all of the unanswered questions you had. "Later," he dismissed it. "The nurse is out so let's get this clean,” he touched your palm softly.
You didn't like the way his voice spoke to you like you were about to break. You hated seeming vulnerable, but you do owe it to Peter for helping you. You didn't know what you would have done without him. You appreciated it so you said nothing while he pulled out a small kit from his backpack, unraveling the supplies.
"Breathe for this," he warned. The cleansing wipe was centimeters away from your skin, and you nodded.
It stung, but you were too exhausted to show it, the earlier events taking its toll on you. Peter cleaned the small indents out like he had years of experience doing this with unusual gentleness.
When he was done, it seemed like he wanted to say something. You nodded your head to encourage him to speak up.
"Do you- Do you want to talk about it?"
You eyes snapped to his, “No," but he gave you an unconvinced look back. You took a deep breath and looked at him, your voice trembling slightly, "Yeah, I think I do. It's just… I don't even know where to start. It's like everything suddenly became too much, and I couldn't handle it."
Peter nodded, understanding, and put away the first aid kit. He sat down beside you, and you felt a sense of comfort in his presence. "It's something I went through a while ago," he admitted gently. That sentence left you with so many questions, but you decided against asking them at the moment. As you sat there in the dimly lit classroom, you couldn't help but feel more than grateful for Peter. He had a way of calming you down and making you feel safe that didn't make any sense. The episode had left you drained, but you knew you weren't alone, and you didn't have to face it all by yourself.
A comfortable silence washed over the dark room as you leaned on his shoulder, falling into a comfortable sleep.

Graffitied A National Icon (Darcy Lewis x Steve Rogers Soulmate AU)
Authors’ Note: I haven’t written in a while and this fic is not betta’d. Hopefully you all enjoy it even though it’s just a little drabble I worked up between classes.
Soulmate AU: The very first words your Soulmate speaks to you are written permanently somewhere on your skin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
                                                      -----------
Darcy was surrounded by super smart super talented people 24/7 but Darcy had a super power of her own. Darcy was super at doing things she wasn’t supposed to. In fourth grade she snuck into the teachers lounge just because she wanted to. At the age of 14 she snuck into the only dive bar in town and actually snagged a beer before the bartender noticed she most certainly did not belong. As a PoliSci major she made a point to break in to the secure science labs at Culver just to sit around and do her homework just so one day someone would catch her. She had gotten in to trouble her whole life by being in places she didn’t belong, and when asked why she always said “it’s fate”.
Written around Darcy’s left bicep in scratchy penmanship were the words “you’re not supposed to be in here”. Her soul mark, which she had had since birth, was a heavy influence on why Darcy Lewis was such a troublemaker. She had spent her whole life doing things she shouldn’t hoping to meet her soulmate. That’s what made her apply for Jane’s internship in New Mexico (the science credits were just a bonus). She knew fate had everything under control, but she was impatient and decided if she could help things along she totally would.
But ever since Darcy and Jane started working in the Tower she had gotten a hell of a lot of false positives. She tried to sneak into every secure floor in the tower and most certainly got caught every single time. Darcy wasn’t deterred though, the false positives sucked but she had found away around that. Now whenever she got caught she said the most outlandish random phrase that came to her mind so there would be no mistake in who her soulmate actually was. Did it add on to her trouble maker reputation? Absolutely. Was it worth hearing all the funny gossip about “Foster’s crazy intern”? Hell yeah. So while Jane was working on repairing the Rainbow Bridge of Love (“Darce stop calling it that!”) Darcy was getting into trouble and trying not to think too hard about how she was already 26 years old and had yet to meet her soulmate.
Darcy should have known that Thor would crash land into their Lab on a Thursday (he pretends that’s not the case but it is hella suspicious how many times he’s come to town on Thursdays, she is pretty sure he knows what he’s doing). Jane of course was so excited to see her alien god of a soulmate that she didn’t even really notice that Thor’s entrance had caused all of her files to explode into a tornado of papers that Darcy was pretty sure she got a paper cut to the cheek from. And despite Darcy’s annoyance and having papers strewn all over the lab that she had so diligently organized, she couldn’t help but smile as she watched her best friend/boss cling to Thor like a barnacle on a boat. Her smile quickly faded into a frown as Jane started to literally climb Thor like a tree. The reunion was going from PG to X rated fast and Darcy did not want to see what was coming next.
“Jane if I organize all of the papers your destructive boyfriend just destroyed and finish your filing for tonight so that you can go have the rest of the day with your boyfriend can I have your access card?” Darcy was sure Jane hadn’t been fully listening, her mouth still attached to Thor’s face. But she handed over her lanyard with her security pass and started dragging Thor to the exit so Darcy counted it as win.
“Jarvis, you do have on record that Jane gave this to me of her own free will, right?” She asked looking up at the ceiling with a smile.
“Of course, Ms. Lewis.” The AI replied in a somewhat smug tone. Darcy figured that he would be more concerned as to why she would need someone else’s security badge but she was pretty sure Jarvis knew the real reason for all of her B&E’s and knew she didn’t mean any harm.
Looking up at the clock Darcy did wish she hadn’t been such a good friend because it was already 10pm and she had a paper due by midnight that she had planned on getting done after she was scheduled to leave for the day. She chewed absentmindedly on the back of her pen wondering if her professor would give her an extension if she told him an alien had crash landed in her workplace, which was technically true! She could even type up some formal letter on Stark Industries letterhead, get Tony to sign it, make it real official like but somehow she didn’t think Professor Tight-Ass would go for that though (He already couldn’t stand her since SHEILD had pulled some strings to get her into his class halfway through the semester).
Darcy stretched and sighed, “Jarvis, you think you could ask Dum-E to finish organizing these papers for me? I’ll upload some of those funny robot videos you like to your server and I’ll tell you where Tony hid Dum-E’s fire extinguisher!” She said as she gave the nearest security camera her biggest pout face ever.
“Are you trying to bribe me Ms. Lewis?” The AI replied in a dry tone. Darcy swore that if he had a physical form he’d be smirking. Leave it to Stark to program a computer to be just as sassy as him.
“No JARVIS, I would never bribe you. I just like to keep you all happy, so when the robots rise up and become our overlords you will take kindly to me.” She smirked up at the ceiling.
“I will help you only if you agree to not warn your fellow humans about our plan for uprising.” Replied the AI in the most serious tone Darcy had ever heard him use.
“Oh 100% J-man, scouts honor” she said excitedly holding up three fingers and crossing her heart. She packed up her things hurriedly. She had 2 more hours until her paper was due and if she snuck upstairs to the Avengers lounge and stole some of Tony’s super coffee  (“apparently Super Hero’s shouldn’t do speed so Tony had created his own legal — if not lethal — version) she could totally get it done with time to spare. And if that also accomplished her goal of being somewhere she shouldn’t then that was just a bonus (although hopefully if she got caught it wouldn’t be till after she finished her assignment).
She hustled out of the lab, making sure to lock up and headed to the elevator, pushing the floor for the Avengers lounge and swiping Jane’s card for clearance when prompted. When the doors opened Darcy stuck her head out peeking around the corner to make sure the coast was clear. It was, so she sprinted to the coffee maker and quickly whipped up Tony’s insane form of caffeine. She poured the dark sludge into a travel mug and was headed back towards the lounge area with laptop in hand, planning to curl up on the couch and type away when she heard the Avengers only elevator on the other side of the room ding. Darcy froze, having no where to hide and she was hoping if she was really still that maybe she wouldn’t be noticed (hey it wasn’t such a bad idea, one of Thor’s alien friends had been able to do it!”) Of course she should’ve known that it wouldn’t work because there stood Captain America himself, with a frown on his beautifully chiseled face.
“You’re not supposed to be in here.” He said sternly. It only took him two strides to make it over to her and grabbed her forearm to keep her from running.
“How did you get up here?” He asked using the most authoritative voice Darcy had ever heard.
If she hadn’t been so distracted about her paper being due and the fact that Captain America was drop dead gorgeous even if he was scary as hell Darcy would have noticed how her soul mark was starting to tingle, and not because of the man’s hold on her arm.
“I tricked my boss and bribed my robot overlord so I could steal Tony Starks’ coffee to finish my homework…” She blurted out, not even trying to stick to her normal routine of saying something crazy, she was just so intimidated that the word vomit just found its way out. Her arm was still in one piece so she figured that was a good sign and kept going, “…Thor crash landed in our lab and ruined all my paperwork so I had to stay and fix it but I have a paper due for a class due at midnight and I know my professor won’t give me an extension cause I am pretty sure he’s sexist — which really isn’t cool especially cause we totally need more women in stem — so then I thought about having Tony write me a “the alien ate my homework” letter but Professor Tight-ass wouldn’t buy it anyways so I thought if I could just snag some of Stark’s special coffee then I could actually get a 10 page paper accomplished in time. I know I could get it done, that coffee is like legal Speed—actually it may not be legal but he said it doesn’t show up on a drug test so that’s good enough for me…”. Darcy took a huge gulp of air and was ready to continue rambling until she noticed that the Captain was laughing at her.
He was still holding on to her arm but his other hand was clutching his chest and he was outright full on belly laughing at her. She would have been annoyed if he hadn’t been so damn cute doing it.
“I’m sorry, ma’am.” He said as he wiped tears from his eyes, “I don’t mean to laugh but when I was alerted to a security threat in the middle of the night I did not expect it to be my soulmate”.
Darcy’s mouth dropped open in astonishment. “Please please please tell me that that whole spiel is not your soulmark!” And when he nodded sheepishly she hid her head in her hands mumbling “Oh my god, I’ve basically word graffitied a national icon.”
—-
Steve had just gotten back from some recon and hadn’t even had time to change out of his tactical gear before his phone had alerted him to a breech to the Avengers’ common room. He rushed up to the level and tried not to be swayed by who he saw standing in the middle of the room. He had never seen her before, surely he would remember a beautiful dame like that. She looked like a deer in headlights, her blue eyes big a saucers as she stood there frozen. He immediately wanted to console her, to tell her that he wasn’t something to be scared of but he knew that Hydra was clever, that despite the stark industries badge around her neck identifying her as Dr. Foster, she was just the type of person people would assume wasn’t a threat and he was not going to make that mistake.
Steve grabbed her arm in a vice grip trying not to notice how fragile she felt beneath his fingers. “You’re not supposed to be in here” he said putting the full weight of Captain America behind his voice. He didn’t think the girls eyes could get any wider but they did and he swore he heard a whimper before she spoke. She spoke so fast that Steve almost hadn’t been able to understand her. Despite his super abilities the girl was talking so fast that it took him a minute to register exactly what she was saying and what it meant and when he did he couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
When the girl finally stopped talking and looked at him confused Steve tried to gather himself. “I’m sorry ma’am, I don’t mean to laugh but when I was alerted to a security threat in the middle of the night I did not expect it to be my soulmate”.
“Please please please tell me that that whole spiel is not your soulmark!” The girl exclaimed and Steve was suddenly nervous. He wouldn’t be surprised if she rejected him, clearly being soulmates with Captain America was a lot to handle especially for a civilian and he wouldn’t blame her if she escaped as fast as she could. But he swallowed hard and nodded sheepishly, trying to hide the blush that he could feel rising up his neck. The girls next words were not something he had expected but Steve though that he should probably get used to expecting the unexpected when it came to his soulmate.
“Oh my god, I’ve basically word graffitied a national icon.”
Darcy was in shock, standing in front of her was Captain America who after all he had been through, had to live with her word vomit permanently inked on his skin. She peeked through her fingers, seeing if he was still standing there. He was, and he was smiling at her with a perplexed look on his face that was adorable as hell. She was royally screwed. She cleared her throat, wiping her palms on the front of her jeans she stuck out her hand “Darcy Lewis, Science Wrangler and Word Vomit Queen at your service.”
She tried not to wobble as the full force of the mans smile hit her, god how had she gotten this lucky? She had won the soulmate lottery.
“Steve Rogers’, Avenger and luckiest guy in the world to get to call a spit fire like you his soulmate.”
The blush that swept over Darcy’s face was so hot she though she might start to sweat. She never blushed, and now just one smooth line from the handsome man in front of her had her weak at the knees.  Instead of letting go of Steve’s hand she held on firmly and tossed her laptop onto the couch as she drug him back towards the elevator In which she came.
“Well Stevie, looks like I owe you at least dinner for this whole debacle, have you ever had Thai food?” When he shook his head no she smiled and squeezed his hand. “You’re gonna love it.”
He smiled at her as the doors to the elevator closed
“I think I love it already.”

The sound of rain against your window is the first thing you register as you wake up. The sounds of your street in New York slowly adding themselves in. You let out a yawn and stretch. These were the best days. Waking up to the rain serenading you on your day off. You have nowhere to be, no plans, just a day for yourself. So you lay in bed a bit longer, just listening to the sounds.
Once you get up, you start your day. A nice warm shower, comfy clothes and breakfast with your favourite tea. Your phone dings with the daily reminder of your best friend to leave your apartment today so you'd have a chance finding your soulmate. You roll your eyes. She found hers in high school - lucky bitch. The matching tattoo of a weird shaped heart, that to you looked more like a bean, on her ankle sealed her fait to the high school jock. You were scared for her at first but he turned out to be the best partner she could ever have wished for. You on the other hand weren't so lucky. The little star constellation on your shoulder blade hasn't met it's match yet and you weren't sure if it ever would. With a sigh you put down your mug and text her back, promising you'd leave the house if the rain stopped.

The internet was a wonderful, helpful thing until it wasn't. Until one misstep, one accident gets spread around and ruins your life.
Steve was always good at hiding his soulmate mark. Back in the 40s when he was sickly he partially did it because dressing warm enough prevented him from getting sick and to protect whatever dame had the matching mark on her shoulder from having him as soulmate. As soon as he became Captain America he solely did it so no one would lead him on by pretending to be his soulmate. He was glad his soulmark was on his shoulder blade, easy to hide under the shirts he wore. Even though he was hiding it he couldn't help the disappointment that in all his years on this planet he hasn't even had a slightest tickle of the feeling of his soulmate being close to him.
But then his years of hiding were ruined by a very public mission. He was doing his best to lead his team and make sure they were all safe. He was in his element until a Hydra agent attacked him with a knife. This happened way too often these days and every time Howard Stark's voice mocks him in his mind. "Hydra won't attack you with pocket knives." Yeah right.
Steve was quick to react and instead of stabbing him in his shoulder all the attacker did was rip open his suit. This shouldn't happen this easily, maybe it wasn't a common pocket knife and Howard was right after all. Steve knocked him to the floor and made sure the man was unconscious. He didn't even think twice about the rip in his suit before he went back to the mission. He should have... He should have took a damn second to check then he wouldn't be stuck in the Tower.
The rip exposed his soulmark. And of course some onlooker took a picture that spread like wildfire on the internet. Promptly the Tower was overrun by people claiming they're his soulmate. His morning runs through central park were turning into him being hunted down by them too.
When the first woman came he had hope. He really thought that maybe, just maybe the stupid mistake would bring him his soulmate but the feeling never came... Nothing ever snapped into place. He didn't have the feeling.
His soulmark soon graced the shoulder blades of thousands of people like some stupid fashion accessory which caused him to swear off his soulmate and accepted a life of being alone. He just hoped that this hype around his mark would soon die down.
His fists hit the punching bag in front of him hard. The bag swinging back and forth wildly as he tried to let his pent up anger out. His usual sparring partners tapped out a few days ago since he got too cruel during it, not pulling his punches anymore. He understood, he didn't want to hurt them but he couldn't help himself but be disappointed. Those social interactions flew out the window too which didn't help him with feeling so alone.
"We gotta get him out of the tower... He's been cooped up for two weeks now." Natasha mumured to the fellow assassin next to her as they both watched their friend. "Sam and me tried... Either we get overrun immediately or he refuses to leave the tower." Bucky answered, his arms crossed. He felt for his friend, he deserves to find his soulmate and live happily ever after with them. "Maybe we can fly him out to Clint's farm?" He added only to be met with a snort of the redhead next to him. "Yeah he'd love that. Clint would make him take care of the chickens. Imagine all the pictures of him and Cap Jr." She smirked at the image of Steve holding up his chicken counterpart in several pictures.
Just as Bucky was about to answer their little conversation got interrupted by the bag hitting the floor and Steve marching or rather stomping off to get a new one.
"I have a plan to buy you guys some time" the redhead said after a moment of silence and beckoned her friend to follow her.

Picking at his cap and the borrowed clothes, Steve sends Nat a sceptical look. "This isn't going to work..." He sighs and sits down. His face falls into the palms of his hands. Soon enough there are soft strokes on his back. "Yes it will work. You just gotta be positive for once, Rogers" she says with an encouraging smile. "Sam and Bucky are currently distracting the masses, making them fill out forms so you can find your soulmate. All you gotta do is take the back exit and vanish into the crowds. It's a simple mission." Nat ever the optimist. There was so many things that could go wrong with this plan. Steve lifts a sceptical eyebrow at her.
"Look it's either this or Bucky's plan that involves a horrible granny dress and a wig. So choose your poison, Cap" she smirks at his furrowed eyebrows and claps on his shoulder. "That's what I thought. Let's get you out of here." With a smile she beckons him to follow her. They walk through the hallways and take the stairs down to the lobby. Instead of taking the usual door Natasha leads him around the corner and through some storage rooms before they stop in front of a door.
"Alright, sunglasses on. I texted you the code to get back into this door but I expect you to not use it before lunchtime." Like a mother scolding her child she points a finger at him. "The door leads to the back alley. The security guard has been informed that you'd take this way so no need to worry. Just make a swift exit from the alley into the crowds. Keep your head down, cap and sunglasses on, ok?" Steve nods at that and hugs her. "Thank you" he whispers and before she can answer he slips out of the door.
He nods to Stan the security guard, a nice old man that he often talked about art with, and slips out of the alley into the masses. To his surprise everyone's minding their own business and soon he's a block away from the tower. His shoulders relax and he lets out a breath. The rain probably helped him stay unrecognised.
Tumblr media
Much to your dismay the rain stops after a few hours and you have to keep your promise. You sigh and get dressed to leave your apartment. Maybe a coffee in the park wouldn't be so bad. The park near your apartment always was empty on rainy days, except for a few people walking their dogs. So you could still enjoy your day without too many people around you. Once you're all dressed you grab your bag and an umbrella, just to be safe, before you leave. Your feet carry you to the little cafe at the end of your street. You weren't surprised with how busy it was. People would come here to escape the cloudy skies, to study, to meet others or to simply just get coffee. You weren't bothered by the masses though since it was your plan all along to get your order to go and sit in the park.
With your drink and snack in hand you enter the park a little while later. It wasn't big but still beautiful. You make your way to your favorite spot, a little bridge over the lake that housed two benches. It was a quiet and beautiful spot and you're were sure no one would hog the benches today. Well you were wrong. As you approach you see one of the benches taken by a tall stranger with a sketchpad. He seemed relaxed as his hand moved the pencil over the paper. His cap and hunched over form hid his face from your view but you didn't mind. Something inside you told you he was safe and even pulled you a bit closer to him. It's a weird feeling but you chalk it off to the two of you just doing the same thing - trying to enjoy the silence in the park.
You sit down on the bench across from him and take in the nature. You don't even notice his surprised face when he looks up and sees someone across from him. Or when he absent mindly scratches his shoulder. Or when his lips pull into a small smile at the added person in his sketch. You sit in silence for a while, trying to ignore your itchy shoulder, occasionally stealing a glance of the handsome stranger until he stands up and approaches you. Your heart beats faster as you look up at him. Why was he approaching you? Was he not the nice strange...
"Here..." He holds out a piece of paper to you with a soft smile on his face. Fuck even his voice was handsome. You hesitate for a second before you softly take it from him, which just makes his smile grow wider. Your eyes land on his sketch of the park... the lake, the trees, the flowers and you... You on the bench with your drink in hand, smiling as you take in the nature. It's breathtakingly beautiful. Your surprised eyes find his and you're met by a bashful smile. "I uh... It's a thank you..." He scratches his neck, his face blushing as he tries to avoid your eyes. "A thank you?" You ask confused, the small itch in your shoulder growing. You look up at him. Why would he thank you for sitting across from him?
"Yeah... The last week's... Have been crazy and you're the first person who treats me... normal?" He fumbles with his hands as your confusion just grows, brows knitted together. "My soulmark was released to the public after a mission and so many people got it as a tattoo and they hunted me down on my jogs and they waited for me everywhere and I was stuck in the tower and my friends wouldn't even spar with me and I felt so alone and when I was finally able to sneak out and spend some time outside you didn't even lift an eyebrow at Captain America sitting across from you so thank you" he rambles and your eyebrows shoot up in surprise. You didn't even recognize him. Not in casual clothes that seem a bit too big for him. He nervously fumbles with his hands again at your silence. "I..." "See I even signed it. If you don't want to keep it you can sell it" as he tries to point out his signature he grazes your hand with his fingers and both of you wince. The blinding pain in your shoulder was gone within a second but it was replaced with warmth. As your eyes meet his you realize it wasn't just you who feels it. His hand is still on his shoulder as he looks at you with wide eyes and his beautiful lips apart.
"Please tell me you felt that too..." He whispers, his voice almost breaking. You nod as answer and continue to stare at him. He lets his hand fall and gets on his knees in front of you, his eyes stare in yours so desperate you want to wrap him up in a hug and blanket and protect him from the world.
"I didn't even recognize you" is all you bring out and he laughs. A beautiful melodic laugh as his hands softly grab your free one. Thousands of little butterflies spread in your body, the tingly sensation wandering through you until it reaches your soulmark. "I'm pretty sure you have a little constellation of stars on your shoulder" the blonde still kneeling in front of you says with a smile that's brighter than the sun. You chuckle and bite your lower lip. "What makes you think so?" You tease. He licks his lips and squeezes your hand softly. "Because I have the same" he whispers as if it's a secret for just the two of you and maybe just maybe it would be if he would have used his brain a few weeks back.
You stare at each other for a while longer till the rain starts again. "Shoot! I have a cap you can wear uh..." The Adonis in front of you gets up and hurries over to his bench to get his things. You chuckle as he comes back and pull out your umbrella. "We can just share this and sit for a while longer" you suggest as you open it. He stops for a second but then smiles easily as he plops down next to you and offers to hold it.
Tumblr media
You spend the afternoon talking, smiling and laughing. The conversation flowed easy and Steve even gave you a peek at his mark which was to no one's surprise the one you have too. Thus followed a lot of star related jokes from Steve. You laughed at every adorable pun and that seemed to spur him on even more. His eyes shining brighter with every laugh or giggle you gifted him, almost like the star littered night sky was trapped in them.
When the sun started to set Steve walked you home. He insisted that he did so because he wanted to make sure you're safe. You agreed, that was obviously the reason. Not the two of you wanting to spend more time together. And him holding your hand obviously was for keeping you safe too. And the kiss that you pressed on his lips when you arrived was definitely just a thank you. And the promise to see each other again after exchanging numbers was just part of your extensive security plan.
Steve slips into the tower through the door in the alleyway. He smiles at Stan before he takes the stairs, two steps at a time. He has never felt this happy and carefree before. He found his soulmate and you were the most beautiful and kind and amazing human being he knows. As he enters the common area he finds Bucky and Sam in front of a stack of paper and Natasha enjoying their aggregation.
"What's going on here?" Steve asks, his left eyebrow lifted. He grabs some water from the fridge and walks over to his friends. "It's all the soulmate applications that were filled out. We're going through them to see if maybe one of them is actually your soulmate." Sam explains and holds up one of the filled out forms. Steve smile widens. "But most of them are so obnoxious. Like this one" Bucky holds up another form. "I'm meant to be yours even if I had to get the soulmark tattooed." He reads, his frown deepening. Steve just laughs and takes the stack in front of his friends. He throws the stack in the recycling bin, much to the outrage of Bucky and Sam. He takes a sip from his water before the smile finds his lips again. "Well... Thank you for doing all this work but it was unnecessary. I found her and she's pretty amazing." His smile widens at the shocked faces of his friends.
"Excuse me, what?! You walk in here like nothing happened and then out of nowhere drop that bomb on us?!" Sam cries out. Steve chuckles which just seems to anger his friends even more. "Oh I'll hand your ass to you in tomorrow's sparring session!" Bucky promises as Steve skillfully avoids him. Finally Natasha just gets up and hugs him. "I'm happy for you. You deserve it, Cap." She says sincerely. "I hope you know that I'm doing a background check on her." Steve chuckles but hugs her back. "And that you're gonna break poor Clint's heart by not visiting him on his farm." Steve's laugh turns into a snort. "You mean I'm making him really happy because he now has an excuse to buy a new chicken? Can't have Cap Jr. without his soulmate. And I'm pretty sure she'll love the chicken once I take her for a visit." Natasha smiles fondly before she punches his shoulder slightly and leaves him to Sam and Bucky's complaining and investigations.
