Weekly Art Challenge: Close the Portal

Corel Painter and Wacom Intuos tablet

Decided to illustrate how I think Wanda may look in my series. Her armor design is a combination of her WandaVision look and the white Midgardia set from the Marvel Future Revolutions game (which my Scarlet Witch is wearing for obvious reasons).

This week the challenge was to redraw this panel:

Eventually I plan on doing an actual character sheet for the costume, but I like the idea of her changing it to match Vision after they reunite in my story Working Theory, but still keeping those reds since she’s the Scarlet Witch.

Speaking of future fight if you ever do play it could you do a review of her powers? Bc there are some parts I like about it that feel like they were ripped straight out of a comic but were also creative and new (like the inclusion of flowers, her shrinking people, her duplicating herself etc etc) but there's also some bits that I don't like (like her for some reason being able to open up the universe?? And some stuff that reminds me of HoM but l'm probs wrong about that) and I would love to see ur thoughts on it 💕

I'm not playing that 💕

Like I said, it's hard to find good, clear footage on youtube, especially since the majority of videos are about her M C U costumes, and the wikis and game guides I've found aren't much more helpful. The action in Future Fight seems to be very frenetic-- I'm sure it makes sense if you are playing, but to me it just looks like a lot of noise and flashing.

Wanda's powers are hard to translate into action games, which, unfortunately, are the majority of games she's been in. She usually just ends up throwing energy balls and making stuff blow up. That's definitely the case for Future Fight, but I can see how Netmarble tried to give her unique gimmicks and aesthetic flair based on her comics lore. These ideas were developed further in Future Revolution, which also splits her moves into distinct categories based on witchcraft, chaos magic, and her hex power. I really appreciated that, even if it didn't add anything meaningful to her gameplay.

In both games, I can see how Wanda's movesets are based on her canon powers, it's just that none of the attacks she uses are things she usually does in comics. It all makes sense, it's just not recognizable-- we don't think of Wanda as somebody who summons meteors or shrinks people, but it's a pretty good way to scale "reality warping" down into manageable video game attacks.

Aesthetically speaking, the little glowing cubes or blocks that accompany some of her moves definitely feel like a HoM reference. The use of flowers and butterflies as a shorthand for, I assume, witchcraft-as-nature-magic is a nice idea, although it looks a bit juvenile here. I did notice that some of her attacks have a galaxy effect that's very similar to her current design-- I guess the devs were ahead of their time on that.

Billy's moveset, by the way, is super boring.
