Is It Really That Bad?
Tumblr media
So it’s the mid 80s, and you’re tasked with one of the most exciting things imaginable: Turning a Marvel comic into a movie. Now, this is significant because this will be the first feature film based on a Marvel property; there were some TV films before in the 70s and 80s for Hulk, Captain America, and Dr. Strange, but this was going to be on the silver screen! Which famous character should be brought in for Marvel’s big debut? I mean, DC already killed it with West’s Batman and Reeves’ Superman, so Marvel should put their best foot forward! Should we have Spider-Man? The Mighty Thor? Perhaps the Fantastic Four, the first family of Marvel?
Nah, let’s do Howard the fucking Duck.
Adapting a character who was relatively obscure went over about as well as you might imagine with audiences back in 1986. After seven months of production and millions of dollars, the film bombed hard and left a lot of lives in shambles. The director of the movie Willard Huyck and the head of Universal Frank Price both ended up losing in this, as did George Lucas (contrary to what you might believe, he wasn’t the director), who ended up having to sell off Pixar to Steve Jobs to pay off Skywalker Ranch and divorce settlements, things he hoped this movie would have paid for. Frankly, Lucas was a scapegoat for Universal, who pushed his involvement despite his desire to not overshadow his friends working on the movie; Huyck had worked with Lucas on American Graffiti, Temple of Doom, and A New Hope, so he clearly liked the guy, but I guess the suits wanted some of that Star Wars money by slapping the name on. Price also really wanted to make the film similar in tone to Ghostbusters, which didn’t help matters at all.
Pretty much the only person who worked on it and doesn’t hate it is Lea Thompson, who played Howard’s girlfriend Beverly. She has been surprisingly positive about the film and owns her role in it, apparently even offering to to direct a new adaptation for Marvel Studios and lending her likeness to the comics so she could appear as herself beside her one-time fictional boytoy. You go, girl!
Tumblr media
Ah, but perhaps the saddest victim of this film’s reception was Howard himself. Between this movie and Disney complaining he looked too similar to Donald, Steve Gerber’s wacky duck man was pushed out of the limelight for a long, long time. It wasn’t until 2009 when Bob Iger ordered the purchase of Marvel that Howard was able to start coming back, a return solidified by his awesome post-credit cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy, which got him a new series and cameos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Endgame (where he appears for split second in the big portal scene, coming out with the Ravagers and toting a big fucking gun).
But now that we have dozens of other Marvel films under our belt, let’s take a look back at Howard’s sole cinematic solo outing. Was his big break judged too harshly by audiences of the 80s, or is the movie, much like Howard himself, quite fowl? Well, after giving it a rewatch, I’m here to tell you if Howard the Duck is really that bad.
THE GOOD
What this film lacks in… well, just about everything, it makes up for with sheer cheesy 80s charm.
Tumblr media
Like, look at Howard himself. The suit is bad, the puppet is bad, the fact they tried using both leading to his appearance changing wildly between shots is even worse… But it’s not so bad that it’s unbearable. Like a crummy practical effect like this undeniably has charm, and it’s helped a lot by Howard’s cute, dorky voice. Would it have been better if Robin Williams had stayed on to voice Howard? Undoubtedly. Were we robbed because a young Jason Alexander was turned away after auditioning? Absolutely, and I cry every night that we lost out on this. But Howard just has a prime 80s everyman corniness to him that makes him a likable duck even if the effects don’t really convey him as well as they could.
Then of course there’s Lea Thompson, and you can see why she’s so unashamed of this film, because she is busting her ass for this film. She will make you believe that she finds a weird alien duck sexually appealing. Like I really don’t have much more to add here, she managed to pull that off, she deserved a better career. End of discussion.
Tumblr media
Now, unfortunately, I must praise Jeffery Jones. Here he plays a scientist who gets possessed by the creatively-named Dark Overlord, and he really gets to ham it up in what feels like a prototype of Edgar the Bug. Despite the awful prosthetic work and the Saturday morning cartoon supervillain voice he uses, it ends up being moderately entertaining… and I hate saying that because Jones is an actual, literal sicko in real life. Let’s just say those scenes in Ferris Bueller where he is snooping about a teen boy’s house and leering in the windows hoping to see him is a bit more accurate to his life than you’d hope. It’s a shame, because he’s a solid actor, but it’s hard to praise him too much when he did what he did.
Tumblr media
The Dark Overlord itself is also a pretty impressively-designed stop motion monstrosity, and its scenes in the finale are pretty awesome, only hampered by some really bad compositing. You can definitely tell where the budget went.
Tumblr media
And then we have the song played at the end, a ridiculously cheesy slice of 80s pop cooked up by Thomas Dolby, the man behind the legendary one-hit wonder “She Blinded Me With Science.” Needless to say, Howard’s little song at the end is every bit as infectiously earwormy as that.

THE BAD
I think what really kills the film is just how weak the third act is. The film was at its best when it was about Howard being put into awkward situations, like being forced to work a shitty job or starting a bar fight. But I guess that doesn’t get asses in seats, so they have a third act where Howard has to save the world from destruction by evil aliens by stopping a gigantic sky laser. Considering how that very plot has become a widely-mocked cliché in the wake of movies trying to copy this very thing from The Avengers, Howard was truly ahead of its time in terms of comic book adaptations.
Even in the good parts of the first two acts there’s some weakness. The conceit of the character is that he’s an alien duck forced into the mundane situations the real world provides, and while we do get some of that, a lot of stuff is abandoned a bit too quickly for my liking. Sure, we didn’t need a montage of Howard applying for a bunch of crummy jobs, and I suppose we didn’t need to see him manage the band excessively or anything, but too much of what makes this movie charming in its weird and awkward way is thrown out for some souped up climax where Howard flies a little plane contraption with Tim Robbins and then fights an alien monster. It feels like a bunch of half baked plots haphazardly slapped together more than a cohesive narrative the writers gave a shit about.
Tumblr media
On top of that, the film feels remarkably cheap. The suit and puppet thing is bad, the compositing of the Dark Overlord is bad, it genuinely blows the mind that these effects were this mediocre when the movie was relatively expensive to make. I have to imagine most of the budget went towards getting the crew cocaine to deal with the miserable shooting schedule, because it definitely doesn’t seem like it went to costumes or making the visuals look good.
And speaking of things that don’t look very good… Duck tits.
Tumblr media
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
Nah.
Look, I can’t pretend this movie is amazing or anything. It is incredibly flawed, with rushed production values and more corniness than the fields of Iowa. It has trouble finding its tone, and kind of loses its webbed footing in the third act. But I have watched a metric fuckton of superhero movies in my time, and this film has a sort of corny, earnest charm that genuinely awful ones lack. Like Thor: The Dark World is utterly mediocre and forgettable, and I couldn’t tell you a single thing that happened in it, but this movie? Even with the parts it drags I could still recount some of the wacky plot beats. And maybe it has worse production values than Batman v Superman, but it’s also a lot less miserable and has a cool stop-motion alien monster instead of a shitty gray CGI blob that murders Superman. It’s just not a film that feels quite as awful in terms of comic book movies when filmmakers have gone out of their way to make infinitely worse, infinitely less fun films in the decades since.
It also helps a movie very similar to this came out that did what it was trying to do better, and you’re not gonna believe what it is: Seth MacFarlane’s Ted. It is extremely similar, a fish-out-of-water story about a fantastical being stuck in the mundanity of the real world. Ted even gets a human girlfriend, and the movie has a really weird third act that’s a bit more action packed than the rest of the film! It manages to work a lot better there, though, and that’s despite starring Mark Wahlberg! So yeah, even if the actual Howard didn’t fully live up to its interesting premise, we have something that does just that, which makes this film dropping the ball a little less egregious.
The 4.7 up there is honestly not quite as harsh as you’d think given this film’s reputation, which probably reflects how opinions of this have turned a little bit and given this film a cult following. I might even be so nice as to round it up to a 5; it’s not really a bad movie so much as a weird one, and it is filled with cheesy 80s charm if you can get on board with it. It’s probably not going to change your life, but it’s fun, mostly harmless comic book movie fluff, and if nothing else it’s unique and out there in terms of comic book movies. We wouldn’t get anything quite this weird again until they started letting people like James Gunn and Taika Waititi make comic book movies, so it’s nice to go back and see where it all began. Howard the Duck is a very interesting piece of history, maybe more for the story around it than the film itself, but damn if I don’t get a few chuckles out of watching it and a goofy grin from that cheesy end credits song.
It’s definitely more worth a watch than Wonder Woman 1984, that’s for fucking sure.

MCU timeline, if they actually cared about the characters as much as we do:
Phase 1 (setting up the universe)
- Iron Man - Incredible Hulk (+ Bruce’s DID is included and well represented, Hulk is not shown as a monster which cannot control himself so much he hurts everybody around including Betty, in fact he is shown to avoid hurting anybody who isn’t actively shooting at him, Dr Samson and Rick Jones are a must for this origin story, post credit can stay the same) - Hawkeye (includes: his childhood with an abusive father, his brother Bradley, his past in the circus so basically his origin story, his deafness, him being conscripted by SHIELD, and post credit scene with him choosing not to kill Natasha) - Black Widow (includes: her childhood in the Red Room, the fall of USSR and change in Russian politics, KGB being dissolved, Natasha’s breaking of her programming, her leaving the Red Room thanks to meeting Hawkeye, the assassination of Dreykov’s daughter, What Happened in Bucharest, Natasha joining SHIELD, and post credit scene with her taking place of the PA which was supposed to apply to Stark Industries) - Iron Man 2 (+ more info about Howard’s abuse of Tony, Natasha is there, but it’s not her first appearance, and also she isn’t shown as if she knew she was in a movie) - Thor - Captain America: The First Avenger (I think that his stupid behavior in CW is completely set up by his origin story, so I wouldn’t change anything if we wanna have that conflict with him being more concerned about Bucky than literally anything else going on) - Captain Marvel (because her existence makes Fury think about Avengers and explains why Fury wanted to create them in the first place, also action happens mostly on Earth) - Avengers (+ Jane Foster and Darcy are part of the science team and greatly contribute to the plot as scientists, because I am fed up with women being sidelined)
And because Avengers has a post credit with Thanos we should get some movies in space now related to Thanos first, before Iron Man 3.
Phase 2 (we learn about the ultimate badguy)
- Guardians of the Galaxy - Thor: The Dark World (but hopefully better written, + no damselling of Jane) - War Machine (Rhodey’s only movie, Tony is busy doing whatever) - Hawkeye 2 (how Clint dealt with everything which happened during Avengers, how SHIELD agents treated him, introducing his family?, maybe bringing back Barney and showing his relationship with Mockingbird and stuff like those) - Iron Man 3 (without the ableist meta message that all disabled people just wait to become murder machines, but still introducing Extremis) - Black Widow 2 (could be the same story as we got in 2021, introducing Yelena Belova) - Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (includes: their childhood, how their parents died (Yugoslavia being bombed by NATO, but I doubt Hollywood would ever wanna say it out loud), them growing in orphanage, possibly attending university (universities for citizens in Serbia are free and because Sokovia is based on Serbia, and it is a slavic country we can assume they have that system as well, and there are also social support programs available from both the government and possibly the university as well), the difficulties of a life in which they have to cover their costs of living themselves, because they have no parents, American army stationing in Sokovia, twins getting radicalized, protesting against foreign influences in their country and joining Hydra, experimentation, if they were trained by Hydra to use their powers or not and how were they trained, Sokovia being shown to be normal country instead of breaking apart state which Americans see each time they think about it) - Falcon (Sam’s origin story, his mission in Afghanistan and stuff - I don’t know his origin story, so I dunno what to say here) - Captain America: The Winter Soldier - TV show about the consequences of the movie above. Possibly something akin to Agents of Shield. What happened to the agents, how world reacted to Natasha’s “fuck you”. - Ant-Man (introducing Hank Pym) - Avengers: Age of Ultron (Ultron is Hank Pym’s like in the comics, but in some versions of this Tony helped or provided tech so he still wpuld feel quilty afterwards, + no dying Pietro)
Phase 3 (everything gets complicated, but they prevail)
- Incredible Hulk 2 (what happened to Bruce and Hulk and how they dealt with the idea that Steve literally had his well-being in his ass by inviting Wanda and Pietro to the team, what is going on with Thaddeus Ross and Betty Ross, we meet Jennifer Walters) - Black Panther (different one than the one we got, introduces T'Challa and his family) - Spider-Man: Homecoming (could be earlier, just after Avengers, but *shrugs* this story is written in such a way it is better after Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron) - Captain Marvel 2 (basically setting up why she didn’t participate in Civil War, my idea was to depower her, but not take her powers away, so she could have some more down to earth stories instead of stories set in space, maybe even explore her alcoholism that way) - Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch 2 (deradicalisation, becoming heroes) - Captain America: Civil War (Accords are better explained, Matt Murdock or Jennifer Walters show up to do exactly that, RAFT is explained as American prison not related to the UN, Steve this time has valid concerns about the Accords, but he still goes ape shit over Bucky, still lies to Tony about his family, because those traits were all set in his origin movie) - The Wasp (Hope’s origin story) - Hawkeye 3 or Hawkeye TV series - Black Widow 3 (something something about Ross hunting her, but Red Room was already taken down, so different story is here instead) - Ant-Man 2 (Wasp is here too, but this is Scott’s movie, previous Ant-Man and The Wasp) - Black Panther 2 (about Kilmonger and T'Challa’s scuffle for the throne) - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (didn’t know where to put it, because it is mostly unrelated to any other movies with this story about Ego, but it develops Nebula more, so let’s be here) - Doctor Strange - Thor: Ragnarok (I am not opposed to Planet Hulk, but I am more inclined to not put Bruce into a movie which is supposed to be about Thor and Loki so… more time for Brunhilde) - The Winter Soldier (solo Winter Soldier movie) - Avengers Infinity War/Endgame (it makes no sense to make two movies if we can have one, the snap was used as a plot device more than actual defeat of the Avengers, so it can last less than 5 years and also no time travel which then you have to explain why TVA didn’t put everybody in jail for that, Tony doesn’t die and Carol and some other powerful people (LIKE HULK, Hulk is NOT less powerful than Thanos or fearful or something) take down Thanos instead and Tony finally retires and is left alone by everybody goddammit)
Phase 4 (new era, some heroes retire, others take their place, while different ones just get the grip of whom they truly were all along, and also we get a new ultimate bad guy and possibly set a stage for his defeat) <- this one not really well set up, because we don’t know most of the movies and TV shows which appear in this phase so dunno how to set them.
- Spider-Man: Far From Home - Photon (origin story of Monica Rambeau) - War Machine 2 - WandaVision (or Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch 3, adjusted, so it would not repeat some facts and would only remind about the most important stuff. Also, Pietro lives in this timeline so no Bohner guy lol, he is just insufferable brother-in-law to Vision, and weird uncle to kids) - The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (but with Steve who didn’t go back in time, because there was no going back in time in this timeline, he just finally is learning what accountability is and has to forfeit his shield, because it’s time to retire) - Falcon 2 - Winter Soldier 2 - The Wasp 2 - Loki TV series (Loki survives Thanos and is taken by the TVA, it basically doesn’t force the story to make him quickly develop feelings in the first episode and bypasses that issue, + more Loki Variants, all genderluid and presenting in various ways in the show) - Incredible Hulk 3 (Bruce and Hulk finally start communicating and Hulk becomes gradually smarter, and we meet Bruce’s another alter Grey Hulk and the circus with getting along starts all over again, because Grey Hulk hates Green Hulk xD, is setting up She-Hulk) - Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings - What If…? TV show - Ms Marvel TV show - Eternals (feels like should be in different phase) - Spider-Man: No Way Home - Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness - Thor: Love and Thunder (about Mighty Thor - Jane) - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (about Shuri?) - The Marvels (Captain Marvel 3 basically) - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quntamania (setting mutiple Kaangs I suppose) - Moonknight TV show - She-Hulk TV show - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - Blade (feels like should be in different phase) - Fantastic Four - Avengers (in which they fight Kaang?)
I was going with the idea that every superhero should get at least 3 movies ONLY about them. As of now, I managed to put 3 only for a few, and some were swapped for TV shows instead to fill the place and better show the character and what they’re up to, because TV shows have more hours than movies.
I know there are supposed to be TV shows for Armor Wars, Iron Heart and Secret Wars, but I dunno when, so no idea where to put them.

Hi Sine~ I recently came across some of your reading lists and I saw the one about the reading order for Avengers Vol5/New Avengers Vol3. And I was wondering if any other main runs have to be read simultaneously like that, or if that's basically a feature of comics? Where mostly all of it has to read alongside something else? I could probably pick your brain all day about comics, honestly. Thanks!
Feel free to keep picking my brain! Almost no one sends me asks when I have anon off.
If you're asking about the specific situation of needing to read two entire runs together more or less simultaneously, that's a thing that Jonathan Hickman specifically seems to like to do. He did the same thing with his Fantastic Four run before this, pretty much, and after this he did it on a slightly smaller scale with X-Men in House of X/Powers of X, which was two miniseries where you absolutely had to read both series in order.
Other than that, it's reasonably common to have comics events where you probably need to read at least some of the tie-ins in addition to the main event book in order to make anything make sense.
There are some events that are deliberately structured like this that are all tie-ins, where the entire event takes place in the individual comic books and you have to read them in order and it won't make much sense if you skip any of the tie-ins. Basically, the event just happens to be held in ongoing comics to make you have to buy all of them. The biggest event that immediately comes to mind for me here is Operation Galactic Storm, which has something like 25 issues. Dark Reign is also like this in that there's no main event book, but it's a lot more loosely structured and you don't need to read all the issues there.
Then there are events that have one or two special books, usually to start and end the event, and then the rest of the event takes place entirely in tie-ins. Relatively recently, this would be something like Standoff. I think this might also be The Crossing; I am still not brave enough to read it.
But usually the situation with comics events is that the main event miniseries will mostly stand on its own and the tie-ins will provide more information and different perspectives, like what Your Fave thinks of the main event. It varies as to how well events do this. For example, you can read the Civil War mainline and none of the tie-ins and get a story that is relatively understandable -- but then you might be confused as to how pretty much every other book for years afterward talks about how Captain America dies in it, and as it turns out he dies in Captain America #25, which is not part of the main series at all. So there are definitely events where reading a few specific tie-ins really helps your understanding of later events.
But in terms of "yeah, you have to read this entire Avengers run at the same time as this other Avengers run," I'm pretty sure that's just Hickman. There have been other situations where single writers have been in charge of massive multiple-book chunks of the Marvel universe -- like DNA Cosmic or Claremont's X-Men (and all his other X-books) -- but as far as I know, for the most part you can read just one series and be fine understanding it, although if you're having fun you will probably want to read more. Bendis' tenure at Marvel featured him writing multiple simultaneous books about the same people -- New Avengers vol. 1 & Mighty Avengers vol. 1, Avengers vol. 4 & New Avengers vol. 2, Invincible Iron Man & International Iron Man & Infamous Iron Man -- and to the best of my recollection they all pretty much stand alone. I read New Avengers/Mighty Avengers at different times and I was fine; I've never read NA vol 2 but Avengers vol 4 is perfectly understandable without it.
So, yeah, it's basically a Hickman thing but also it's a tendency that other comics runs sometimes (but not always) have, but taken to the absolute extreme. Because there are definitely events where you have to read a few different ongoing books in precise orders -- but I can't think of anything else where it's the entire run. It's possible that someone at DC does this or someone at Marvel I'm not thinking of, but I can really only think of him.
Hope that helps!

civil war: casualties of war (2007) and civil war: the confession (2007) – these are both oneshot comics and also the Only Civil War Content You Need To Subject Yourself To
spider-man noir (2010) – a break from the avengers stuff to tell you that this comic is very brutal and also very good
secret invasion (2010) – ok avengers emh did it better™ but this is still very neat! also it’s pretty trippy so its got that going for it too

doctor strange vol 3 (2015) – literally everything i want from a comic tbh, also chris bachalo’s art is amazing
marvel 1872 (2015) – no one actually calls this Stevetony Bible 2 but lbr it’s basically Stevetony Bible 2
all-new all-different avengers (2015) – BEST AVENGERS TEAM EVER. EVER. PLEASE BENDIS WHY DID YOU BREAK THIS TEAM UP IM SAD

the life of captain marvel (2018) – the carol origin retcon is…eh. but it’s still very good! think of it as carol’s international iron man
avengers: back to basics (2018) – kamala goes back in time and accidentally reveals tony’s secret identity and it’s the funniest fucking thing
captain marvel (2019) – the first issue is everyone bullying tony which sucks but DONT LET THAT GET YOU DOWN bc it’s, like, actually good and also tony appears more in later issues without getting bullied
war of realms (2019) – i guess it’s a marvel rule that all crossover comics having to do with asgard are Top Notch? anyway
loki (2019) – AMAZING loki shenanigans and also the REAL reason you needed to read war of realms tbh
ironheart (2019) – gosh i love riri williams so much she’s so GREAT and you should DEFINITELY READ THIS
QUESTIONABLE™:
invincible iron man vol 1 (2008) – matt fraction’s iron man run…it’s ..ok story wise? however the characterization is a lil off at times and the art is HORRIBLE
iron man vol 5 (2013) – ok so this comic is super weird ? because it’s nice that tony spends time out in space but also it confirms that he’s a furry apparently. pretty much the only truly average iron man comic
avengers vol 8 (2018) – okay so i really like the art and the story’s okay but there’s a bit where tony flirts w carol and it’s the most ooc thing ive ever seen and that’s enough to land it in the questionable category
tony stark: iron man (2018) – i debated over whether to put this here or in the Bad™ category BUT valerio schiti’s art is too beautiful and the rhodeytony content fuels me. also issues 12 and 13 (war of realms) written by gail simone are pretty good. unfortunately dan slott wrote the rest and it AINT IT CHIEF
gwenpool strikes back (2019) – it starts off strong in the first issue but goes downhill from there and tbh it’s not really respectful of the previous gwenpool run
magnificent ms marvel (2019) – ok listen i love kamala a lot but if theres gonna be a romance plot between her and bruno it’s the electric chair
BAD. AVOID AT ALL COSTS™
iron man vol 2 (1996) – just. don’t touch this. it’s a hot mess
civil war (2006) – i hate this. so much. it’s unreal. all you need to know is that steve was real close to killing tony in the end but surrendered when he saw that he no longer had the moral high ground. and also steve got assassinated right before he was going to be put on trial
mighty avengers (2007) – this comic had the potential to be SO good. unfortunately the artists for the actual avengers issues don’t respect women at all
superior iron man (2015) – they made tony evil and i could not be more angry with it. who even fucking wants to read this theres not even any emotional payoff for any of this
civil war ii (2016) – i would hit this stupid comic in the knees if i could. there is not a single c*vil w*r with rights. all you need to know is that carol put tony into a coma and it’s super ooc
iron man 2020 (2020) – listen i know this comic hasn’t come out yet but it has all the ingredients to be EVEN WORSE than superior iron man which is saying a lot.
this took way too much effort

MONICA RAMBEAU
Originally posted February 24, 2020. Revised January 23, 2021.
Monica Rambeau has carried the following mantles: Captain Marvel (1982 - 1996), Photon (1996 - 2005), Pulsar (2005 - 2013), and Spectrum (2013 - ).
This character’s high-level superpower concepts include energy conduit, energy damage, light, speed.
Fictional Background
Origin. In the comics, Monica is the daughter of a New Orleans seamstress and fireman, who debuted in a Spider-Man book as a harbor patrol officer exposed to extra-dimensional energy as the result of a science accident. Her first appearance made the folds of her cloak look like the legs of a spider, as though she were a Spiderverse Hero.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she is the daughter of Carol Danvers’ fighter pilot squadron wingman in Captain Marvel (2019). She apparently grows up to be “Geraldine” in Wandavision (2021) and is scheduled to make an appearance in Captain Marvel 2 (2022).
Tumblr media
Mantle. In the comics, Monica immediately became the first female Captain Marvel and appeared the next year in Avengers comics, carrying the title through the 1980s. She eventually adopted the name Photon in 1996, around the same time Genis-Vell adopted the Captain Marvel title. Then after Phyla-Vell took the Captain Marvel mantle, Genis became Photon in 2005, and Monica became Pulsar. She eventually changed her codename to Spectrum before she joined the Mighty Avengers to face off against Thanos in New York in 2013.
So far in the MCU she’s just been Monica and “Geraldine.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fictional Powers
Monica can turn herself into any kind of energy, and can manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum. This is due to extra-dimensional energy bombardment after an accident caused by an evil scientist. Her power set becomes the basis for speed and strength, energy output of all types, including light, fire, electricity, electromagnetism, and maybe microwave, plasma, and other forms of heat and energy.
Why Summoners Care
After languishing in relative non-print obscurity despite appearing in more than 900 comics, the original female Captain Marvel has begun to enjoy mainstreaming after her kid MCU debut in Captain Marvel (2019), she appeared in WandaVision (2021-). She was also in the MCOC comic.
Possible MCOC Build
Probable Class. Science or Cosmic
Possible Hashtags. #Avengers #Dimensional Being #Nextwave #Ultimates. She has been a member of the Avengers, Ultimates, and Nextwave. Her powers are interdimensional in nature.
Kit Possibilities. Expect her to be an Energy Conduit like Bishop, but without the overload, with an energy-being mode similar to Captain Marvel’s Binary. Possible debuffs include Incinerate, Shock, Magnetize, Blind, Concussion, Stun, Mesmerize. Other abilities on the table include Unblockable, Phase, Miss, Energy Damage, Kinetic Charges, Power-Gain, Intangibility, Light-based/Brightness attacks/advantages, Microwave Immune, advantage over Microwave and Magnetic powers, automatic defensive mode-switch, conditional immunity to Energy-based attacks. In her energy form, she should take little damage from Physical attacks, especially bullets and the like, which should all Miss as though she is Phased.
Likely Synergies. "Captains Marvel" with Mar-Vell, Phyla-Vell, Captain Marvel, and Captain Marvel (Classic); "Photons" with Genis-Vell;  "Lieutenant Trouble" with Captain Marvel; "Teammates" with Hercules, Namor, Machine Man, Boom-Boom, and/or Elsa Bloodstone; "Energy Conduit" with Electro, Bishop, Zzzax, and Blue Marvel
Matchup Concepts. Maybe she would have advantage over magnetic champs like Polaris, Onslaught, Magnetos (including North), Molyb or Molyn, and others. She might also be good against Abe Jenkins tech champs like Mach-X and Beetle, whose Microwave Power Gain (or other abilities) she could cancel. Immune to Holocaust's Microwave blast-attacks and Firestar’s Microwave-based attacks.
Other Games that have Featured Monica
She’s not commonly featured in Marvel video games. She did appear in the mobile deck-builder card game Marvel: War of Heroes.
Monica and the Battlerealm
She featured prominently in issues six, seven, and eight of the game's official companion book, Contest of Champions Vol. 1 (2016). (Other Ultimates who have been in the comic with her include Ms. America (Chavez) and Blue Marvel.)
Tumblr media
Relationship with Summoners.
February 24, 2020: Summoners have mentioned her rarely in the message boards (I only found her here and here) but upvoted her nearly 100 times as of this writing (rank 93 of 600+) on the MCOC Wishlist Poll.
January 23, 2021: she has now been upvoted more than 285 times on the Wishlist and has been requested a couple dozen more times on the message boards (such as these and these).
NEWS & UPDATES
August 7, 2020: Rich the Man reiterated his prediction.
May 7, 2020: Rich the Man predicted, commenting on the new State of the Battlerealm map update, that the box connecting Vision and Scarlet Witch should be Monica, based on her inclusion in the upcoming Disney+ MCU television show, WandaVision.

Young avengers & Runaways comic books reading order (new)
Like I’ve said in a previous post, I’m very new to the comic book universe. I really wanted a reading order to 2 of my favorite comic book teams: the young avengers and the runaways. The runaways already made it on screen with their tv show, that is being renewed for a third season. The young avengers have not made it (yet). After watching Avengers: Endgame, it seems logical to introduce them (even more) to the marvel universe. Cassie Lang/Stature already has been introduced in Endgame, so maybe it’s time for the others as well. For those who are intrested in the young avengers and the runaways, but would also like to read the main events of the marvel universe, hopefully this is a POTENTIAL (maybe not so complete at the end) reading order: For those who want to add comics to the list or want to correct my reading order, please please please comment down below! hey i asked courtney this and she directed me to you, i’m planning on starting my comic collection, do you have any recommendations? i’m a huge marvel fan and less of a dc fan, but i’ll take anything i can get!
oh word, sure! idk which characters you’re looking for specifically but I can direct you to: here for guides organized by character/ship or @whatthefuckisacomic
And I’m assuming by collection you mean you’re purchasing physical copies yes? Or do you mean you just want to start reading more comics? Either way I would say some good starters would be:
Finished Series
- Hawkeye Vol. 4 (!!! best place to start for beginners imo)
- Captain Marvel Vol. 8
- Captain Marvel Vol. 9
- Thor Vol. 4 (Jane Thor)
- Mighty Thor Vol. 2 (Jane Thor)
- Ms. Marvel Vol. 3
- Black Panther Vol. 6 (written by Ta-Nehisi Coates!!)
- Black Widow Vol. 5 (Phil Notos art is lovely)
- Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man (Part of Ultimate Marvel, not main 616)
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Spider-Gwen Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Iconic Storylines
Dark Phoenix Saga
Civil War
House of M
Ongoing (* are my recs, the others I haven’t read but have heard good things)
- Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 5*
- Captain Marvel Vol. 10
- Ironheart Vol. 1
- Daredevil Vol. 6*
- Immortal Hulk (i’ve been meaning to get to this, I’ve heard rave reviews)
you can also check here for current Marvel best sellers
Also, once you get comfortable with these, I would highly recommend easing into DC or maybe even some indie comics!! Diversity is always good :)
each series tends to be split up into multiple books, the links only take you to the first volume of each series – you can check this database for a full list of issues
if you have Amazon Prime, you can read certain comics for free online!
@quantumarvel courtney if you wanted to check these out too!!
