“But We Love Martha Jones!” - The Doctor Who Fandom’s Selective Memory of Racism
Chapter 3 - Martha vs Bill
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moffat took us to a Bristol university in 2017, to meet the bright, friendly, chip-serving Bill Potts, the first Black lesbian companion of Doctor Who. Bill’s entrance wasn’t met with sunshine and rainbows either, with complaints of “PC agendas” and the accusation of her sexuality being “shoved down our throat” following her throughout Series 10. She was often called annoying and accused of being too angry. Her outbursts at Twelve weren’t fully well received, despite them only happening as a response to being emotionally manipulated and being shot and converted into a Cyberman against her will. Overreactions, right? That being said, Bill seems to have a more positive reception than Martha did and this can be pointed towards the writing. Moffat decided S10 would focus on Bill’s race and had the 12th Doctor bravely punch Sutcliff after his anti-black comments about her. This was mostly well received by the fandom and the Doctor was praised for taking initiative. How I feel about this scene and how Doctor Who handles race can be explained in way more detail for later but I can sum it up by saying I didn’t hate the scene: but I don't love it either. The racism Bill receives is barely mentioned again apart from a small comment in Oxygen, plus I see this scene constantly used to shut down any valid criticism about how race was handled in the Moffat era. Twelve is centred in this scene, not Bill. The fact this scene is referred to as “Twelve punches the racist” and not “Bill experienced racism” speaks for itself.
Tumblr media
Leading back to Martha, a weird parallel is made between her and Bill. Yes, RTD and Moffat are different people who wrote different people but a parallel is there regardless; A brown-skinned woman expected to defend and save her white male incarnation whilst barely praised for it and constantly compared to her blonde white female predecessor, versus, the light-skinned woman who was actually defended by her white male incarnation. It's not the best look. The show set up the parallel by having Bill reference Martha’s butterfly effect conversation with Ten and the fandom carried this on. As much as I love Bill, her being held up as the Black companion “done right” has always felt wrong because not only are there critiques to be made about Moffat’s handling of Black characters too (Danny Pink anyone?), it reinforces Martha as the “failed” Black companion. “Moffat wrote Bill to do XYZ whilst RTD wrote Martha to do ABC” became “Bill did this and Martha didn’t so Bill was better Black representation!” Bill spoke about racism and Martha didn’t (even though she did in Shakespeare Code and Human Nature/Family of Blood), Bill wore her natural hair and Martha didn’t (even though Freema didn’t control the costumes), Bill did everything right (as if Martha did everything wrong).
Tumblr media
Bill being placed on the pedestal of the “perfect Black companion” not only erases the antiblackness her character also experienced but reinforces how her darker counterparts, Martha, Mickey and Ryan, “fail” in comparison and “fail” in their Blackness, over reasons the characters nor actors themselves had any control over. It really begs the question of how different Bill would’ve been treated if she was darker, but I guess we’ll never know. If we’re gonna praise and uplift POC in Doctor Who, specifically Black characters, we need to uplift them in all shades. Only supporting the lightest person in the room whilst saying they’re better than the darker ones is not the anti-racist serve this fandom thinks it is.

My Personal Headcanons on Grell's Past Life (A Masterdoc)
*with excerpts from a draft that will never see the light of day!
The autism got to me ok
Now before we start, I feel like I have to add some disclaimers, number one being everything about this isn't really based on anything concrete, this is strictly my delusions. Second being if there's a flunk in the time period, ignore it. Turn your brain off.
Mr and Mrs Sutcliff
Before our beloved baby girl, there are, of course, her parents. They're nameless in my head, only going by Mr Sutcliff and Mrs Sutcliff. Grell doesn't remember either (more on that in a later post about her reaper years). Her parents were happily married actually, her father knew he had to marry well and coincidentally fell for the best lady during his time. Her mother fancies a handsome man in a suit, perhaps that's where Grell got her taste in men
Her father had brown hair while her mother had red hair which she inherited along with the kind-yet-kinda-arrogant eye shape her mother has. Yet despite that, she looks more like her father: perpetual smile, sharp chin, a more angled face rather than a rounder one, broad shoulders, his eye color (I have never thought abt her eye color before Dispatch so imagine it as you like). Grell's attitude is a mix of both families, the good and the mostly bad coping response
They also know about her 'homosexuality' and her father states that it's fine as long as no one else knows. Their song is Our Word, TRUST
Early life
1840 - 1858
Grell Sutcliff, in my mind, was born to a wealthy old money family. She was her parents only child and as a son, they knew early on they had to teach her to be a respectable young man to be a good heir for her father's business. She's not close to any of her parents; her dad was fine enough to joke around with but he has his moments of anger (I see them like how Emily Dickinson and her father were potrayed in Dickinson) and her mother—though more soft-spoken—was strict with decorum and required Grell to act appropriately at all times no matter what
She had some cousins but most notable would be Martha who was 8 years old when Grell herself was 18. Martha was Grell's first exposure to her hobbies that are seen as feminine like sewing and dressing up but still no 'awakening' yet
Tumblr media
She used to be very obedient and less outspoken with her opinions, some even regard her as a serious person who is above anything that isn't seen as polite. During social events, you can usually find her chatting away with people of the highest status but afterwards, she'll be very tired and would look disgruntled somewhat (my girl is tired of masking). Usually when that happens, she'd slip out of the party for a break, this is where she gets the opportunity of a lifetime, the cataclyst of everything actually
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As seen above, at 18, Grell was invited to an event by Aubrey Churchill at his country house (privacy reasons, he said) which was actually more of a lively party for bohemians alike which wasn't something Grell was used to. Though she felt overwhelmed, out of place and slightly judgmental about it at first, she frequents the event more in the future after meeting her best friend Charlotte Moore
Crisis
1858 - 1862
Tumblr media
Brown hair, blue eyes, and a fiery spirit, Charlotte was an upper-middle young lady who aspired to be a writer and mostly dabbles in poetry and short stories. She was Grell's first 'gender envy' which Grell misinterpreted as a crush so when Charlotte privately turned down her proposal to court her—stating that she didn't really see Grell as a future husband—, she got over it pretty quick and the two remained friends even when Charlotte moved to New York when they were 22
Tumblr media
When Grell turned 19, she met Charlotte's cousin and a son from Grell's family friend, Julian Williams who was around 24 years old, no bitches, no rizz, bad vibes. They became fast friends, too fast actually. Julian's a dick and ended up using her as an experiment/for funsies :///. Charlotte attempted to get Grell cut the relationship off BUT THE ASSHOLE IS LIKE LICE, HE JUST WON'T GET OFF. Eventually, Grell does call their fwb situationship off when they almost got caught and Grell decided that "hey, maybe I don't want to get stoned for getting caught making out with someone who doesn't even like me enough"
Things have not gotten better because at 20, she gets stuck in ANOTHER situationship, girl FIGHT BACK. With none other than Aubrey and Eleanor Churchill (married couples are freaks) who were 25 years old and 20 years old respectively when they first coaxed Grell to join in on their... weird fuck pile. They treated her better than He Who Must Not Be Named and they did ignite her love for theatre and acting but still... on thin ice
Anyway, they don't matter. All you need to know is that they eventually drifted away from the situationship all together because they found someone else
Jane Doe, The Only One Who Deserves Rights
1862 - 1868
Tumblr media
MY BELOVED JANE DOE (not her real name obvi), if you've read TWBDT you know she was Grell's wife during her human years and that she was a lesbian who was looking for a beard. Why, you ask? Because Julian is a pisshead who was jealous that Grell moved on to the Churchill and decided that the best way to remedy his jealousy is by spreading a rumor about her 'true nature' as if he wasn't sleeping with her beforehand ://
Mr Sutcliff had no time for such bullshittery and basically told Grell to pack her shit up and get a wife quickly. During this time, Grell wrote a letter to Charlotte:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk what else to put during their relationship aside from the fact that it was only with Jane that Grell started to question her gender a bit because she's the only one who isn't a raging transphobic cunt (sorry y'all Charlotte's a victim of her time, she changed later on though). Unfortunately girlie didn't connect the dots faster and ended up having a one-sided crush on Jane rip. They're cute and I wish they were real :( wholesome yuri
DEATH~✩
1869
Unfortunately, all good things do come to an end. 1869 in particular was a hard year for her because that's when the pressure starts caving in on her. Aside from her father forcing them to have kids already, Grell's starting to realize that her life just sucks man. As much as she loved Jane, it's not fun marrying someone for status and appearances only and not for love. Long story short, she ended up breaking down under the intense pressure after a huge fight with her father and she died via slitting her wrists in a locked bathroom in her home with Jane getting inside way too late
Grell died pissed off, believing that her suicide was as an act of revenge against her family because now, they don't have a heir that came directly from their bloodline, and overall became a bitter and jaded person she was in the reaper OVA

For the fanfic ask meme, 7 and 17?
7. What’s a trope you love to write?
like 90% of my stories involve one of the main characters getting kidnapped (or arrested or some other variant thereof), usually one of the male characters -- Steve in Home and Horizon, Reaches has accidental kidnapping, Morning is basically everyone by the TVA, Kanan and Ezra in Crown, Kanan, Hera, and a large number of Syndulla family members in Backbone and Lair, Captain Kenobi in Gambit...I can go back further, but it's there. It is a pattern I have really only recently noticed, but apparently I really like it. Plus then I get to write dramatic reunions and/or rescues and I love writing dramatic rescues and reunions.
17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?
Sure. I read more original fiction than I do fanfic, but the biggest ones are probably Barbara Hambly, Tamora Pierce, Diana Wynne Jones, Martha Wells, S.M. Stirling, Mercedes Lackey, Diana Gabaldon, Robin McKinley, Rosemary Sutcliff, George R.R. Martin -- I'm a fantasy reader of a very specific period of 1980s-2000s fantasy. Edgar Rice Burroughs but in less obvious ways, just because I grew up reading Burroughs. J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, of course. Plus a couple of other authors about whom various horrible stuff has since come out, so I don't reread, but because I was reading them at very formative points of my life they have their fingerprints on my writing. (Just from my dates and my tastes it is not hard to guess who they are.)

The above list is in order I read them--favorites are bolded. If I reread something (RR), you can assume it's a favorite. Red is fiction, blue is non-fiction, purple is poetry.
My favorite books of the year were nonfiction--The Chiffon Trenches, Furious Love, The White Album, and I'm Glad My Mom Died all made a real impact on me. But a special shout-out to the delight of rereading Emma, picking up Sutcliff for the first time since my mom read them aloud to us years ago, the haunting Rose Under Fire (set during the Holocaust), the surprisingly excellent All Systems Red, and Gregory Orr's incredibly moving poetry collection. Louise Glück remains the author of my heart.
Here's to making it to 50 in 2023. Or 52. A book a week. :)

2, 6, and 20 for the book asks? :)
2. top 5 books of all time?
That list shifts daily but the first 5 that spring to mind are: LOTR, Persuasion, The Goblin Emperor, The Last Unicorn, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel
6. what books have you read in the last month?
Since the middle of May...a whole bunch, actually (I had jury duty, okay, that's a lot of sitting around with nothing to do):
Book of Night, by Holly Black
Tempests & Slaughter, by Tamora Pierce
Winter's Orbit, by Everina Maxwell
Bravely, by Maggie Stiefvater
The Red Prince: The Life of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, by Helen Carr
The Moth Catcher, by Ann Cleeves
To Marry and to Meddle, by Martha Waters
The Eagle, by Rosemary Sutcliff
Arrows of the Queen, by Mercedes Lackey
The Seagull, by Ann Cleeves
To Have and to Hoax, by Martha Waters
(Probably will finish today: To Love and to Loathe, by Martha Waters)
20. what are things you look for in a book?
Fun or interesting characters, at least occasional laughs, if it's a mystery am I given at least mostly the same opportunity to figure it out as the detectives even if I never manage it (Ann Cleeves is not always good at this, unfortunately), if it's nonfiction is it clearly written and relatively easy to follow by its intended layperson audience. Y'know, is it a good book that will keep me engaged?

"Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe was born June 23, 1940, at Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburgh. Both his parents were Scottish and spoke with Scots accents. His father Charles (1905-66) was a Protestant, married with four children, when he and Martha "Millie" Cronin (1907-83) conceived Stuart. She was a staunch Roman Catholic who until becoming pregnant had been studying to become a nun. Charles was an engineer/fitter with literary learnings and talent. Disowned by their families, by 1943, they'd moved to Roby, just east of Liverpool, where Charles became a wartime inspector of aircraft engines. No record of a marriage can be found but they had two further children, Joyce (1942) and Pauline (1944), and they stayed in the area, for the most part residing in council houses in nearby Huyton. Millie became a schoolteacher and Charles a merchant navy engineer who spent long stretches at sea.
"Stuart was a naturally bright child who went to grammar school, passed five O-Levels and began at Liverpool College of Art in 1956, leaving home soon after to share nearby bedsits with Rod Murray. The writer Nik Cohn would describe Stuart's mother as 'a fiercely emotional woman who protected and possessed him with quite obsessive energy. A dramatic lady by any standards, she was always convinced she had a genius on her hands. They hoped he'd become a doctor but at 15 he decided he wanted to paint' [Observer, September 8, 1968.] While Stuart's relationship with Millie remained intact he fought to resist her controlling influence and gave the clearest of impressions about this to John Lennon and George Harrison, as John would recall: 'He hated her... except she gave him twenty ciggies a day and five bob.' Rod Murray says Stuart adored his father - 'He was like a dog with two dicks when his dad came back from sea. He obviously loved him. Mr. Sutcliffe would take us out to the Cracke and we'd all get absolutely bladdered before he went home to his wife. He was a larger than life character- ebullient and fun.'
"Stuart, who had no discernible Liverpool accent, stayed delicate and never grew tall, reaching no more than 5ft 7in. College friend Jon Hague remembers him as 'very skinny, weak and sick looking,' while Rod Murray notes 'He was often unsteady and wobbly. If someone was going to fall over something, he would.' Stuart's musical background was limited: apart from singing in the church choir at nine and ten he had a few piano lessons and a Spanish guitar he rarely touched. though his youngest sister claims he was always a great rock and roll fan, and a girlfriend claims he was Elvis-obsessed, few of his college contemporaries saw it. The primary record collector and fount of musical knowledge there at the time, Tony Carricker, says 'Stuart was always the most cerebral and intellectual of all of us: I don't remember him being into rock or having records. I once loaned him about ten 45s and they came back warped - the ultimate sin.'
"It was as a painter that Stuart excelled. His work was often brilliant. He obtained a first-class pass in the college Intermediate exam in 1958 and exhibited in Bradford and Liverpool in 1959. He was a quiet but determined and utterly committed young man... and, as Tony Carricker adds, 'He always understood image.'"

Beatles Survey Results Part 3
Hi, guys! I did a survey way back in November and I posted parts one and two of the results but never part 3. I’m sure you’ve forgotten all about it and gone on with your lives, but here it is :)
George in 1968 was considered to be his best look with 88 votes, closely followed by 1965 with 80 votes. 1969 got 40 votes and 1963 only 11.
Tumblr media
John’s best look was voted to be 1964 (77 votes). 1966 got 62 votes, 1968 got 49 and 1960 got 31.
Tumblr media
Paul was voted to have been the most gorgeous in 1965 (77 votes). 1963 got 63 votes, 1969 got 48 and 1967 got 40.
Tumblr media
Ringo was voted to have been the most fab in 1969 (84 votes), followed by 1961 with 74 votes. 1964 got 52 votes and 1967 got 10.
Tumblr media
When it came to the solo music, 165 people said they listened to some of the Beatles’ solo music, 43 said they listened to everyone’s and just 12 said they listened to none of it.
These were the results when I asked about who had the “best” solo career:
Paul: 100
George: 64
John: 28
I don’t care: 25
Ringo: 3
Someone pointed out that it was an unfair question since John had a much shorter solo career than the others, and George, too, but as with everything in this survey: it’s all very subjective.
Regarding how many were interested in which Beatles girls, Olivia opened up very strong (maybe my closest mutuals are Olivia stans (: ) but Linda ran ahead, perhaps unsurprisingly. These were the results:
Tumblr media
Again, all the girls are lovely and wonderful. It’s not a contest.
Who should be seen as the fifth Beatle then? Brian won with 153 votes, then came George Martin with 141. Stu Sutcliffe got 48 votes and Pete Best 15. Neil Aspinall and Billy Preston got 5 votes each. Mal Evans had 3 votes, Martha 2 and Eric Clapton 1. One person said “All of them, really” and one person said “All of them and none of them.”
The last question was: Finally, do you wish they would have continued after Abbey Road? Yes got 52 votes, No got 47 and Maybe won with 121 votes.
Would it be fun to do this again? Reblog and tell me if you liked it!

Serial Killer Potential! According To Your Zodiac
The stars are not always 100% accurate in predicting our personalities. However, they can provide some pretty interesting and important insights to some aspects of our behaviours. We all can admit to having a dark side to us. Think about it! Even the bubbliest of individuals do tend to lean more on the morbid side of life at times. There seems to be something within us that finds comfort in morbidity. The question however remains, is the solace derived from the dark side of life enough to drive us into a murderous rage? Well, let’s see what the stars say shall we?
Aries (March 21 - April 19):
Aries are known for going for what they want no matter what. Is death a barrier they can simply overlook as a means to an end? Well, it turn out that it is for some. Serial killers such as Joseph Franklin, Donald Harvey, Paul Knowles, Keith Jespersen, Charles Sobhraj and Herbert Mullin are some of the headliners in the Aries serial killer hall of fame. Combined, their actions have been known to claim the lives of anywhere between thirty and slightly shy of sixty individuals.  Aries clearly are a blood lusty lot but are they lustier than the rest of the zodiacs?
Taurus (April 20 - May 20):
Taurus seem to be giving the rest of the Zodiacs a run for their money as far as serial killer victims are concerned. While the number of notable killers may be on the lower end of the spectrum, the victims aren’t. Starting from the pioneer of the blood thirsty art of serial killing Mr. H. H. Holmes, fondly known as the Torture Doctor who has a record two hundred bodies under his belt to Martha Becks who has under twenty victims, Taurus serial killers have for sure carved their names into the walls of history. This zodiac also has a number of female contenders that are worth mentioning. We already talked about Martha Becks right? Well we can’t forget her sister in blood thirst, Amy Archer Gilligan. Other notable names worth dropping under this zodiac include The Moon Maniac (Albert Fish) and The Gorilla Killer (Earle Nelson).
Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Do not be fooled by the bubbly, every cheerful nature of Geminis. This happy adventurous bunch seem to have a liking for spilling blood. Notable serial killing Geminis make up about twelve name sin the killer hall of fame. A good number of these individuals have an interesting story to them. They were often found to have certain mental health challenges and were seemingly masters of double lives. Combined, their known victims account for a minimum of one hundred and twenty four souls.
Since we have established a culture of notable name dropping let us continue shall we. For Geminis, we have The Son Of Sam, Jeffery Dahmer, Kenneth Bianchi, The Hill side Strangler, Milwaukee Strangler, Richard Chase, The Vampire of Dusseldorf, John Collins, Author Shawcross, Leonard Lake, Wayne Williams, Danny Rolling, Peter Sutcliffe, and Robert Lee Yates.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Do not be fooled by their calm exterior. Cancers can be a rather ruthless bunch if pushed to a corner. While they have a few mentionable names, only four are worth mentioning. Genene Jones, John Reginald, Carl Panzram and Gary Heidnik combined have a minimum of ninety two victims whose murders can be directly linked to them. The blood lust of Cancers can be attributed to their ability to love with every fibre of their being as well as their moody tendencies. So better not cross a Cancer on a particularly moody day.
Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Leos are perhaps the least likely to be serial killers out of all the zodiacs. These gentle souls care more about enjoying life and all the mysterious and beautiful things it has to offer than getting irked by the little upsetting things that life throws at them. This, however, doesn’t mean that they are devoid of any mentionable names. Myra Hindley, Anthony Sowell and John Haigh together are responsible for the murders of at least twenty five victims.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
When it comes to blood thirsty traits, Virgo are serious contenders. If we are name dropping, then allow us to mention just but a few. To start us off, we have Henry Lee Lucas who is responsible for more than one hundred and fifty seven victims. Others in this list include Rodney Alcala, Paul Bernardo, Richard Angelo, Albert DeSalvo, Richard Biegenwald, Harrison Graham, Ed Gein, Marybeth Tinning and Gerald Stano. The ten combined have claimed the lives of at least three hundred and ninety seven people. Not only are these Virgo headliners known for their numbers, they are also known for their grim methods.
Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Libras have some of the most eclectic personalities in the zodiac yet have one of the least notable names in the serial killer hall of fame. Not to take away from their ‘glory’ but for the extremes that appear within this zodiac, four is an impressively low number. Patrick Kearney also referred to as The Freeway Killer is the star of this zodiac with a body count of up to forty three unfortunate souls. Fellow blood thirsty souls include Angelo Buono Jr., Bobby Joe Long and Gerald Gallego. Together, all four have a body count of at least seventy five people.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21):
Scorpios are a unique bunch. This is the first zodiac to have a bloody duo; Alton Coleman and Debra brown. Another one of your mentionable killers is Carl Eugene. Other blood thirsty members of this camp include Charles Manson, Belle Gunness, Nannie Doss and William Heirens. These notable mentions are responsible for the loss of at least one hundred and sixty nine lives.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21):
For a people whose zodiac sign is half beast and half man, the likelihood of serial killer tendencies is high. While this zodiac has not attracted a large crowd of killers, it does have some of the more famous ones. Ted Bundy for example is a member of this cosmic family. He is not only renowned for his killing sprees but his successes at escaping the arm of the law even after it had caught up with him severally. Other notable mentions include Richard Cottingham, Edmund Kemper, Carlton Gray, and Denis Neilsen. Together, this murderous bunch have claimed the lives of at least seventy four people.
Sagittarius are known for their great conversational skills as well as their wits. It is no wonder that some would speculate that the number of serial killers under this zodiac that are yet to be discovered could be shockingly high.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19):
It is natural for Capricorns to distance themselves from people. They do not trust easily and it takes a lot to get into their inner circle. Their natural distrust can tend to make them rather cold individuals. It is no wonder that the total body count of Capricon serial killer victims rises to as high as one hundred and nineteen. Our notable mentions under this zodiac include Dean Corll, Joe Ball, Ian Brady, Charles Ng, William Bonin, and Vincent Johnson.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18):
Aquarius are another happy zodiac that does not seem to be blood thirsty. There are only four notable mentions under this zodiac with a combined body count of forty nine victims.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20):
Pisces are known to have two extremes. They can either be super relaxed individuals or super intense. It’s probably the latter that has seen them accrue at least twelve serial killers with a body count of at least two hundred and seventy nine victims.

Have we done an authors fic rec yet? I want to know what makes the writers sit back and go “I’m going to re read this seven times and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop me”
No one is around to stop me from answering this one, so I’m gonna go ahead, and they can reblog later if they think of something. :) I tend to read published fiction a lot more than fanfic these days, so my answer is gonna mix a bunch of my favorite re-reads together. I read fairly widely, but the stories I turn to repeatedly tend to run towards quietly hopeful, emotionally comforting, and frequently gay.
For fanfic: Astolat’s Misethere (The Witcher 3), which is sex-pollen fic done right; Aubreyli’s I Know About You (ANBU Legacy AU; I watched her write it and I’ve reread multiple times since then, okay!); Metisket’s There May Be Some Collateral Damage (Bleach/Harry Potter crossover) which makes me laugh my head off every time; Handfast, by emilyenrose (Nirvana in Fire), the Nihuang/Mei Changsu|Lin Shu arranged marriage fic of my heart, as well as Good Practice, in which Lin Shu fails at polyamory, and Accustomed to Disguise, in which Lin Shu outsmarts himself.
For original fic available online: beili’s Jack of Spades series (spies in love!); Ogiwara Saki’s Strength, Gallantry, and Other Useless Bits (martial arts boys’ boarding school) and Unidentified Friendship Objective (I love the main characters in this one so much)
For published novella-length work: AJ Demas’ One Night in Boukos and Something Human; Martha Wells’ Murderbot series, starting with All Systems Red; Emily Tesh’s Silver in the Wood (coming out next week!)
For published novel-length work: Martha Wells’ Raksura series, starting with The Cloud Roads; Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor; Lois McMaster Bujold’s Sharing Knife (starting with Beguilement) and Chalion series (starting with The Curse of Chalion); everything by KJ Charles, but especially Spectred Isle; Andrea K. Höst’s Touchstone series, starting with Stray; L.A. Hall’s The Comfortable Courtesan series; Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence (lawyers are NECROMANCERS); and too many books to cite by Rosemary Sutcliff, Gillian Bradshaw, Guy Gavriel Kay, Mary Renault, Rosamund Pilcher, Rachel Neumeier, Patricia McKillip, Robin McKinley, Dorothy Sayers, Mary Stewart… I’ll stop now but I could go on for a really long time.
