Canonical enshittification
Tumblr media
This is the Facebook playbook: you lure in publishers by promising them a traffic funnel ("post excerpts and links and we'll show them to people, including people who never asked to see them"), and then the rug-pull: "Post everything here, don't link to your own site. Become a commodity supplier to our platform. Abandon all your own ways of making money. Become entirely subject to the whims of our recommendation system."
Next will be: "We block links to other sites because they might be malicious."
Then some kind of "pivot to video."
Probably not video (though who knows?) but some other feature that a major rival has, which Twitter will attempt to defraud its captive, commodified suppliers into financing an entry into.
In case you were wondering, yes, this is canonical enshittification. Lure in business customers (publishers) by offering surpluses (algorithmic recommendation and an ensuing traffic funnel). Lock them in (by capturing their audience and blocking interop and logged-out reading).
Then rug the publishers, clawing back all the surpluses you gave them and more, draining them of all available capital and any margins they have, until they die or bite the bullet and leave.
I would also give good odds on this leading to a revivification of the "Pay us tens of thousands of dollars a month for a platinum checkmark and we'll actually show what you post to the people who asked to see it."
That will be pitched as the answer to publishers' complaints about not wanting to turn themselves into commodity Twitter inputs. It will be priced at the same (or more) as the revenues publishers expect to lose from being commodified, making it a wash.
All of this seems to me to be an "unfair and deceptive business practice" under Sec 5 of the FTC Act.
If I sign up to follow you because I want to see what you post, and Twitter shadowbans your posts unless they are formatted to maximize your dependence on Twitter, they have deceived me, and are being unfair to you.
This is *very* analogous to the Net Neutrality debate, where a platform blocks or deprioritizes the things its users ask to see, based on whether the suppliers of those things are its competitors.
I've written about how an end-to-end principle for social media could be enforced under Sec 5 of the FTCA, how it would address this kind of sleazy practice, how it would be easy to administer, and wouldn't form a barrier to entry for new market entrants:

Who’s to Blame for Out-Of-Control Corporate Power?
One man is especially to blame for why corporate power is out of control. And I knew him! He was my professor, then my boss. His name… Robert Bork.
Robert Bork was a notorious conservative who believed the only legitimate purpose of antitrust — that is, anti-monopoly — law is to lower prices for consumers, no matter how big corporations get. His philosophy came to dominate the federal courts and conservative economics.
I met him in 1971, when I took his antitrust class at Yale Law School. He was a large, imposing man, with a red beard and a perpetual scowl. He seemed impatient and bored with me and my classmates, who included Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham, as we challenged him repeatedly on his antitrust views.
We argued with Bork that ever-expanding corporations had too much power. Not only could they undercut rivals with lower prices and suppress wages, but they were using their spoils to influence our politics with campaign contributions. Wasn’t this cause for greater antitrust enforcement?
He had a retort for everything. Undercutting rival businesses with lower prices was a good thing because consumers like lower prices. Suppressing wages didn’t matter because employees are always free to find better jobs. He argued that courts could not possibly measure political power, so why should that matter?
Even in my mid-20s, I knew this was hogwash.
But Bork’s ideology began to spread. A few years after I took his class, he wrote a book called The Antitrust Paradox summarizing his ideas. The book heavily influenced Ronald Reagan and later helped form a basic tenet of Reaganomics — the bogus theory that says government should get out of the way and allow corporations to do as they please, including growing as big and powerful as they want.
Despite our law school sparring, Bork later gave me a job in the Department of Justice when he was solicitor general for Gerald Ford. Even though we didn’t agree on much, I enjoyed his wry sense of humor. I respected his intellect. Hell, I even came to like him.
Once President Reagan appointed Bork as an appeals court judge, his rulings further dismantled antitrust. And while his later Supreme Court nomination failed, his influence over the courts continued to grow.
Bork’s legacy is the enormous corporate power we see today, whether it’s Ticketmaster and Live Nation consolidating control over live performances, Kroger and Albertsons dominating the grocery market, or Amazon, Google, and Meta taking over the tech world.
It’s not just these high-profile companies either: in most industries, a handful of companies now control more of their markets than they did twenty years ago.
This corporate concentration costs the typical American household an estimated extra $5,000 per year. Companies have been able to jack up prices without losing customers to competitors because there is often no meaningful competition.
And huge corporations also have the power to suppress wages because workers have fewer employers from whom to get better jobs.
And how can we forget the massive flow of money these corporate giants are funneling into politics, rigging our democracy in their favor?
But the tide is beginning to turn under the Biden Administration. The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission are fighting the monopolization of America in court, and proposing new merger guidelines to protect consumers, workers, and society.
It’s the implementation of the view that I and my law school classmates argued for back in the 1970s — one that sees corporate concentration as a problem that outweighs any theoretical benefits Bork claimed might exist.
Robert Bork would likely regard the Biden administration’s antitrust efforts with the same disdain he had for my arguments in his class all those years ago. But instead of a few outspoken law students, Bork’s philosophy is now being challenged by the full force of the federal government.
The public is waking up to the outsized power corporations wield over our economy and democracy. It’s about time.

With the TLOU1 Remake
I feel like I can bring up my lament on the games industry and their obsession with graphics (spurred on by gamers overall and their obsession with graphics).
Each console cycle, we see more graphical improvements. But the Last of Us remake, it just shows that this has serious diminishing returns (and has for the last couple console gens).
Tumblr media
FIFA’s a good benchmark because it releases every year. The red outlines indicate a new console release that year. This is the same person each year. (I missed 2017).
You can see the dramatic diminishing returns with each new iteration. From 2013 onwards you can see a dramatic shortening in the jumps in graphical upgrades. By 2018, this shortens again.
This is because what as the polygons increase, the addition of new polygons becomes relatively smaller. A model with 10 polygons sees a major jump to 20 polygons, 100%. But a jump of 10,000 polygons in a 100,000 polygon model is only a 10% bump.
Tumblr media
This fixation on hyper-realistic graphics is pushing consoles to be bigger and better, while the idea of expanding other technical aspects of games go unexplored. To me, the fact that games AI has largely stayed the same for a decade is disappointing.
To this day, NPCs will charge you with a knife from yards away, in a straight line, because their AI is just figuring out the shortest path to you and thinks of nothing else.
Enemies will funnel themselves into doors or halls without thinking because all their AI considers is if they have line of sight. So waves upon waves of NPCs will walk through doors, one at a time, and get shot like targets on a wall.
This AI has largely remained unchanged since Half-Life 2.
Sure, AI is hard to market while graphics are easier. So what about, instead of using improved hardware to update graphics again, instead focus on things like destructible environments. And not just the “oh, your cover degrades,” but making buildings and terrain show signs of damage in real time, rather than just slapping bullet decals on a wall when you shoot it.
What about sound? What about improving the way sound travels in areas and through objects? This would dramatically change how stealth operates.
What about clothing physics, so clipping is heavily diminished. Instead of a ribbon clipping through your character’s shoulder, have it interact with the model instead.
For the longest time, video games often ‘cheated’ by creating illusions to simulate real effects. Wall damage isn’t your bullet leaving a hole, it’s a decal on a still flat surface. Your footsteps aren’t actually creating sound, it’s just a sphere around you that gets bigger or smaller depending on variables. Mirrors don’t reflect, they’re just transparent walls looking into a cloned room with cloned NPCs. Rain is just a series filters, which is why standing under an awning or tree doesn’t stop your character from getting wet.
For a long time we could’ve been moving out of the realm of ‘cheats’ and, instead, improving these things to make them behave more realistically. But, instead, the budgets go to graphical improvements (and other things I don’t feel warrant the price tag).
I really wish gamers and the industry stopped venerating graphics to the degree they do. The TLOU Remastered looks fine. If you’re going to remake a game, do it for a game that actually needs a graphical update (if you must).

The 9,000 Dollar Joss Sale
Buckle up folks because this is the strangest American girl listing I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
See this Joss? She’s cute, she’s in good condition, she’s got a hair salon style in. But she’s nothing special, and you’d think typically a doll like that would fetch, I don’t know, 90 dollars? She’s got her accessories and a carrying case.
But you’d be wrong.
That Joss sold for nine thousand dollars.
Tumblr media
Yes, she’s haunted, it seems. There’s a full story in the comments of the listing, but I picked out the highlights.
Tumblr media
The seller got this Joss from a guy they deal with frequently, and he was the one who told them it was haunted- and that people might pay a few grand for a haunted doll. So the seller listed it for 9,000.
I first saw it before the story was updated with communication via a paranormal investigation device, and those pictures are now included with the listing.
Tumblr media
Apparently this Joss has a lot to say, and that is worth 9k to someone, somewhere.
I made a joking offer of 30 bucks, thinking that the 9k was a placeholder price of some kind, and the seller instantly declined. But Ebay saw I was interested, so they sent me one of those classic Ebay “sucks to be you, the item you liked is GONE!” emails. And my jaw dropped.
At least they had the courtesy to offer free shipping.
There are two going theories, imo. Either the haunted doll market is insane, and someone wanted a haunted (but not malicious) doll that badly (they didn’t even make an offer for 8k?? I would have)... or they’re laundering money.
Call me crazy, but I don’t think this is legitimate. I skimmed haunted doll listings and most of the time, it looks like “haunted doll” sells at or slightly above the regular price of the dolls. Not many American Girl dolls are listed as haunted, usually old porcelain dolls that have a slightly creepy vibe to them.
Either somebody wants a visually pleasing haunted doll, and 9k is chump change to them, or, well, maybe someone made about 10k or so in a shady business (not talking drugs here, I’m talking a weird MLM or an under the table job) and needed to process their money through a taxable revenue stream. IRS auditors are going to be more willing to accept “people love haunted shit” than “I just found 10k on the ground”.
I’d say I’m 60/40 on a strange wealthy collector spending 9k on this doll or tax fraud being funneled through a Joss, and I don’t know which one is stranger.

Man Lights Himself on Fire at Trump Trial; Publishes Manifesto
Tumblr media
From his manifesto:
This extreme act of protest is to draw attention to an urgent and important discovery: We are victims of a totalitarian con, and our own government (along with many of their allies) is about to hit us with an apocalyptic fascist world coup. These claims sound like fantastical conspiracy theory, but they are not.
He goes on to argue that crypto currencies are actually a planet wide ponzi scheme:
The March 2023 bank failures were all intentional: the banks were used to move out stolen Ponzi money. This signals that they’re no longer dumping cash in to keep the cryptocurrency Ponzi afloat, and that it will soon go insolvent, as all Ponzis must. When the Ponzi scheme goes insolvent, it will take down half the stock market with it: The perpetrators used their major companies to pipe into the blockchain so they could funnel money out from the crypto exchanges. This includes Google, Tesla, Apple, PayPal, Facebook, Disney, Walmart, Target, InBev, Zoom, and countless others. It is a Ponzi scheme so large that it created global inflation, which is why the price of Bitcoin has been a remarkable leading indicator for inflation rates. Victims who bought crypto don’t realize their money has already been stolen, so the money gets double-counted by the victims and the criminals who stole it... In order to explain the massive anomaly, our criminal government unleashed COVID on the world and told us these were the “stay at home stocks.”... It could best be described as an economic doomsday device, intentionally made to shatter the world economy. As it turns out, we have a secret kleptocracy: Both parties are run by financial criminals whose only goals are to divide, deceive, and bleed us dry. They divide the public against itself and blame the other party while everything gets worse and more expensive and handful of people take all the money. Since it is fully parasitic, a secret kleptocracy is an incredibly unstable form of government – left to its own devices, it can only lead to fascism or failed state.
He continues:
This is our rotten farce: For our entire lives, we have been flooded with media designed to slowly steer us into a world where the American Dream was dead, where the public was fully divided against itself, where everybody believed we were powerless to do anything about our worsening circumstances. It is all so they can organize an unprecedented, apocalyptic rug pull on the entire populace as they pivot to fascism, which is perhaps best understood as kleptocracy at the barrel of a gun. When we piece it all together, we understand the truth: We are in a totalitarian doomsday cult. Why on earth would our elites do this? There are many reasons, but the simplest is because capitalism is unsustainable, and they knew it: Climate change and resource extraction would catch up eventually. So, they never intended to sustain it. They knew all along that they would gobble up all the wealth they could, and then yank the rug out from under us so they could pivot to a hellish fascist dystopia... [T]he biggest lie we’ve been told is that we are powerless. We’ve got one way out of hellworld, and that’s for the public to realize that we’ve been conned completely so we can build a united movement that shatters every lie they’ve told us, mocks this rotten farce as loudly as it deserves, and aims at nothing short of abolishing our criminal government so we can build one that serves the public. To understand this story is to see right through the con, to become immune to the endless sea of criminal propaganda, and to feel the great joy and power that comes with freedom. If a small number of people quickly put on these truth-colored glasses, we are in for an unimaginably bright future. If not, we get an apocalypse.

hi :D i hope you are having a good day. i have a question:
i wanted to dress lolita for a while, but im a poor latina in a (in general) not-so-kind latino country for poor people, the tax to buy in original sites from other countries is CRAZY and the ones from my country are also expensive cause its not a popular fashion in latino america. so both isnt affordable to my mom, who works with kindergarten kids and have to raise 3 kids of her own. my dad works, his payment is better than my mom but he have to spend it in his treatment cause he have a chronic illness and mine + my siblings cause we are fucked up in the head. do u think its acceptable if i buy popular dresses in aliexpress?
i dont want to fuck original artists work and a lot of their payment. i mean, lolita fashion its not a SUPER popular fashion like non-alternative fashions. i would refuse to buy by aliexpress and would wait until i (luckily) am in a better situation if its harmful to the artists
pls let me know, mwa mwa <3
also, i love to think humans have animal personalities, and i see u as a bunny girly - coming for a hamster girly
hello, i hope you're having a great day (or night) yourself!!
my answer trails on for quite a bit so i'll be including it under this 'read more' cut!
as for your question, i would say it ultimately comes down to what you want to do and what you personally find acceptable. it's already a great start that you're not jumping straight into it, and that you're choosing to make an informed decision. i'm not sure that i'm the best person to answer your question, but i'll tell you what i think..
everyone has a different experience coming into the fashion. i've heard many stories about beginners starting out with buying falsely advertised or replica dresses. back then, it was mostly milanoo but now i would say that's been replaced by aliexpress or amazon. many did so out of a mix of reasons (being more affordable, unknowingly doing so, being young are usually the top contributors to this) these usually end with regret, because the items are very low quality.
i'll clarify this by saying i mean replicas of dresses and prints, and not so much accessories. replicas of shoes and bags are a lot more acceptable within the community because it's not something you can really "copyright" like you can with a print design. replicas do harm the artist because the designs are stolen and resold. they don't profit from those sales. not only that, but you won't exactly be getting what you paid for either. 20dollarlolita on here has a very informative post on this topic, i'm not the greatest at putting this into words.
you're right in acknowledging that lolita fashion is niche compared to other styles, that's a big part of it. japanese brands producing lolita clothing are a lot smaller than we think (and for indie brands, even smaller!!) many of them have been closing recently due to a lack of sales or not being able to keep up with production. buying replicas or settling for fast fashion funnels money into producing more low quality mass produced items, instead of supporting brands that need sales to keep up with producing higher quality items that take more money and time to make.
i'm not too educated on what the taxes are like for other countries, so i can't really help you on that front. i don't know what that's like at all, i only really know how expensive shipping from japan can be.
i recommend secondhand brand items because they could be found at affordable prices without a loss in quality. secondhand items on lace market can be very affordable with patience and catching good deals, this is where i started and i highly recommend it. you'll find even better deals on damaged items, and many of them will be easy fixes with a bit of TLC. the easiest fixes are usually color bled items, yellowed lace from sun damage or age, loose buttons, and stains. shipping prices could be more manageable if you filter it to sellers from your country rather than dealing with international shipping costs.
items on taobao are also quite fairly priced from what i've heard, but i don't have any experience with it so i'm afraid i can't help you more..
personally, i didn't start wearing lolita until i was financially able to do so.. and that wasn't for a long time! i'm not sure how old you are but i was very young and my family wasn't in the best position either when i discovered the fashion. on the bright side, waiting is what allowed me more time for researching and making better decisions.
and thank you, i really do love bunnies!! wishing both you and your family well ♡

Hello. Same anon here. I appreciate your guidance. I'm shedding actual tears while typing this.
Yes, I am scared. 110%. I'm not expecting some sort of "attention", or making people feel sorry for me or that case.
My parents, more specifically my mother, have always compared me to others my age. Especially as I got older. I'm 22, turning 23 this year, my mom has always told me that I, as a woman, I had to do certain things because, guess what? I'm a woman.
My parents, again mostly my mother, has always forced to do things that I do not want to do, then blame it on me.
Anyway. My mom has always told me that you have to have everything lined up for you when you graduate college and/or high school. I do have a boyfriend, I've known him since we were in high school together. Due to how unreasonable housing is right now, as soon as it becomes affordable, I'm planning on moving in with him.
I feel like I blame myself all the time. To not have everything figured out, while my parents think that I should have everything figured out. Besides my boyfriend and my grandma.. I have no one else to tell my worries to. My family constantly emotionally draining me, so I'm always emotionally tired.
Your family is lucky to have someone like you. I, for one, would have loved to have a mother like you in my life. Anyway sorry for this being a bit long.
Thank you again,
A random follower
Ps. For those who wonder, the date is May 4th. Yep, the Star Wars day, "May the force be with you"
Oh hon, I'm so sorry. 💕💕
It sounds like your mother may be trying to get you to conform to possibly the same gender roles she herself was forced into. It was what was expected of her, so she maybe thinks that's just the way things are. Maybe she herself didn't like it either, but just grinned and beared it, so she thinks that's what you need to do, too. (Obviously I'm purely speculating, here.)
That's not to say it's right or fair of her for expecting that of you. She should not force you to do things you don't want to, simply because of your gender. Full stop.
I don't know how old your mother is, but the problem I see with the older generation (mostly Boomers but I've encountered a few Gen Xers like this, too) is that they don't seem to realize that the world is so much different than it was when they were younger. (I say 'they' but I am a Gen Xer myself. Shh, I'm still cool and hip, though. 😎😆 )
Anyway, I know the job market is so hard right now. Back in the day, you could simply walk into a business and practically get hired on the spot. Not so today--you're competing with dozens, if not hundreds of other applicants. Businesses don't want you to call or walk in now, instead funneling you through an online application process that could take the better part of an hour, and boils down to answering sometimes a hundred questions in a pre-made form that doesn't really do anything except waste time. And you get to do this for every job you want. It's frustrating and downright disheartening.
So having that job 'lined up' isn't as easy as it once was.
And this isn't even touching on how much more expensive everything is. The housing market, as you yourself know, is NUTS right now--rent is skyrocketing, and house prices have gone through the roof so much it's pushed out any first-time buyers. There is absolutely no way a kid fresh outta school could afford to move out without help.
I'm just gonna say it - your parents are being unreasonable. The world is so different now than when they were your age. It's more complicated, a hellovalot more expensive, and a lot less stable. To expect you to have everything all figured out and planned to perfection is delusional. Up to now, your biggest worry was keeping up with your studies. Now they expect you to just jump out into the real world, with everything all sorted?
It's very frustrating when parents pull the "When I was your age" stuff. "When I was your age, I was living on my own/working full time/married with a kid on the way." Yeah? Good for them. You're not a clone of them, and the world isn't the same as it was then.
When I was your age, I was still living at home, working as a cashier in a grocery store. That's it. I had no relationship, and no plans or ideas about what I wanted to do with my life. And to be perfectly honest, I can't think about the future. It's just a blurry speck on the horizon. I can't think in terms of "In 5 years I want to [blank]." Because it's just all so abstract to me. That's a long time in the future, and there is so much that can change between then and now. I can't plan to [blank] if I don't know what next week will hold.
It's something that drives my husband batty, because he's a big picture guy. Always asking me what I want to do with my life, what I want to accomplish. And when he does, I just get overwhelmed and feel tired. Because I'm not a big picture person. I'm a detail gal. I focus on the minutiae. The here and now. The things that matter in the immediate future, not the far off abstract future. (Probably why I'm a pantser, honestly.)
I totally get being emotionally drained by someone. It's exhausting and leaves you feeling so low, so down. You wonder if they're right, if there really is something wrong with you because you don't think like them, because you don't see the world the way they do. And especially if others around you seem to know who they are and what they want. What's wrong with you that you don't?
Here's the truth, hon. There's nothing wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with being scared of the future, or not being able to really figure out where you're going. This is a big step in your life, and it's completely and totally normal to be scared shitless at it. Your parents should be encouraging you, helping you navigate it so you succeed, not brow-beating you because you don't automatically have all the answers.
I'm glad you have your boyfriend and grandmother to help you stay sane. Don't freak out that you don't have everything all lined up nice and neat the way your parents want. They seem to want to know what the layout of your new house is when you haven't even found land to start building on! One step at a time!
Don't worry about the length. Write as much as you need.
And I can be your internet mom if you like. Because I'm so proud of you for finishing school, and reaching out to talk about something that's a heavy burden on you.
Sending you more hugs. Take care of yourself. 💕💕💕💕💕

WebWise Review – Website Creation without Any Coding Skills
Tumblr media
Welcome to my WebWise Review Post. Crafting compelling websites that effectively engage visitors and safeguard against threats while consistently offering fresh content is an essential goal for every business owner.
However, achieving this requires more than just a simple process; it demands a comprehensive approach tailored to your industry and audience.
This endeavor involves a series of intricate steps and a diverse skill set. Not everyone possesses the ability to design an exceptional website, leading many to seek assistance from third-party services.
Surprisingly, a significant 96% of marketers are willing to invest between $550 and $985 for the development of basic websites for their businesses. Many resort to platforms like ClickFunnels, Wix, Lead Pages, and Shopify, or opt for freelance website services, often within the same price range for a single website or funnel creation.
Picture effortlessly creating stunning websites filled with compelling content and imagery without having to lift a finger.
It sounds remarkable, does not it? What is even better is that you won not have to rely on third party platforms anymore; instead, you will have the convenience of managing everything from a single dashboard.

the previous post is also why i think the idea of (tax financed) pure cash benefits à la UBI while still in a capitalist economy is a disastrous idea.
not because i don't like free money or because i think the people who could use it deserve to die or whatever...if you live in a market economy, but everyone suddenly gets free money, the rent-earning class (which means housing rent but broadly speaking anyone whose revenue is based on periodic payments for commodities with inelastic demand like housing, food, transportation etc) will just raise their prices by that amount.
car manufacturers have done it very recently - a tax credit of i think around 7k was available for those who buy an electric vehicle...of course, the rational free market decision of the car manufacturer in that context is to just raise their prices of exactly 7k. and why should they not? they aren't the government, they don't have a mandate to attempt (im not gonna call any government a success there) a comprehensively effective set of economic policies.
it you got 1500 bucks free from the government every month, forever, starting next month, with no fundamental changes to the economic system, all that means is that the cumulative price of necessities you cannot do without would increase by more or less exactly that amount. the benefit has been funneled away from its intended recipients, and straight to the rent-earning class.

No, Uber's (still) not profitable
Tumblr media
Going to Defcon this weekend? I'm giving a keynote, "An Audacious Plan to Halt the Internet's Enshittification and Throw it Into Reverse," on Saturday at 12:30pm, followed by a book signing at the No Starch Press booth at 2:30pm!
https://info.defcon.org/event/?id=50826
Tumblr media
Bezzle (n): 1. "the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it" (JK Gabraith) 2. Uber.
Uber was, is, and always will be a bezzle. There are just intrinsic limitations to the profits available to operating a taxi fleet, even if you can misclassify your employees as contractors and steal their wages, even as you force them to bear the cost of buying and maintaining your taxis.
The magic of early Uber – when taxi rides were incredibly cheap, and there were always cars available, and drivers made generous livings behind the wheel – wasn't magic at all. It was just predatory pricing.
Uber lost $0.41 on every dollar they brought in, lighting $33b of its investors' cash on fire. Most of that money came from the Saudi royals, funneled through Softbank, who brought you such bezzles as WeWork – a boring real-estate company masquerading as a high-growth tech company, just as Uber was a boring taxi company masquerading as a tech company.
Predatory pricing used to be illegal, but Chicago School economists convinced judges to stop enforcing the law on the grounds that predatory pricing was impossible because no rational actor would choose to lose money. They (willfully) ignored the obvious possibility that a VC fund could invest in a money-losing business and use predatory pricing to convince retail investors that a pile of shit of sufficient size must have a pony under it somewhere.
This venture predation let investors – like Prince Bone Saw – cash out to suckers, leaving behind a money-losing business that had to invent ever-sweatier accounting tricks and implausible narratives to keep the suckers on the line while they blew town. A bezzle, in other words:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/19/fake-it-till-you-make-it/#millennial-lifestyle-subsidy
Uber is a true bezzle innovator, coming up with all kinds of fairy tales and sci-fi gimmicks to explain how they would convert their money-loser into a profitable business. They spent $2.5b on self-driving cars, producing a vehicle whose mean distance between fatal crashes was half a mile. Then they paid another company $400 million to take this self-licking ice-cream cone off their hands:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/09/herbies-revenge/#100-billion-here-100-billion-there-pretty-soon-youre-talking-real-money
Amazingly, self-driving cars were among the more plausible of Uber's plans. They pissed away hundreds of millions on California's Proposition 22 to institutionalize worker misclassification, only to have the rule struck down because they couldn't be bothered to draft it properly. Then they did it again in Massachusetts:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/15/simple-as-abc/#a-big-ask
Remember when Uber was going to plug the holes in its balance sheet with flying cars? Flying cars! Maybe they were just trying to soften us up for their IPO, where they advised investors that the only way they'd ever be profitable is if they could replace every train, bus and tram ride in the world:
https://48hills.org/2019/05/ubers-plans-include-attacking-public-transit/
Honestly, the only way that seems remotely plausible is when it's put next to flying cars for comparison. I guess we can be grateful that they never promised us jetpacks, or, you know, teleportation. Just imagine the market opportunity they could have ascribed to astral projection!
Narrative capitalism has its limits. Once Uber went public, it had to produce financial disclosures that showed the line going up, lest the bezzle come to an end. These balance-sheet tricks were as varied as they were transparent, but the financial press kept falling for them, serving as dutiful stenographers for a string of triumphant press-releases announcing Uber's long-delayed entry into the league of companies that don't lose more money every single day.
One person Uber has never fooled is Hubert Horan, a transportation analyst with decades of experience who's had Uber's number since the very start, and who has done yeoman service puncturing every one of these financial "disclosures," methodically sifting through the pile of shit to prove that there is no pony hiding in it.
In 2021, Horan showed how Uber had burned through nearly all of its cash reserves, signaling an end to its subsidy for drivers and rides, which would also inevitably end the bezzle:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/10/unter/#bezzle-no-more
In mid, 2022, Horan showed how the "profit" Uber trumpeted came from selling off failed companies it had acquired to other dying rideshare companies, which paid in their own grossly inflated stock:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/05/a-lousy-taxi/#a-giant-asterisk
At the end of 2022, Horan showed how Uber invented a made-up, nonstandard metric, called "EBITDA profitability," which allowed them to lose billions and still declare themselves to be profitable, a lie that would have been obvious if they'd reported their earnings using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP):
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/11/bezzlers-gonna-bezzle/#gryft
Like clockwork, Uber has just announced – once again – that it is profitable, and once again, the press has credulously repeated the claim. So once again, Horan has published one of his magisterial debunkings on Naked Capitalism:
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2023/08/hubert-horan-can-uber-ever-deliver-part-thirty-three-uber-isnt-really-profitable-yet-but-is-getting-closer-the-antitrust-case-against-uber.html
Uber's $394m gains this quarter come from paper gains to untradable shares in its loss-making rivals – Didi, Grab, Aurora – who swapped stock with Uber in exchange for Uber's own loss-making overseas divisions. Yes, it's that stupid: Uber holds shares in dying companies that no one wants to buy. It declared those shares to have gained value, and on that basis, reported a profit.
Truly, any big number multiplied by an imaginary number can be turned into an even bigger number.
Now, Uber also reported "margin improvements" – that is, it says that it loses less on every journey. But it didn't explain how it made those improvements. But we know how the company did it: they made rides more expensive and cut the pay to their drivers. A 2.9m ride in Manhattan is now $50 – if you get a bargain! The base price is more like $70:
https://www.wired.com/story/uber-ceo-will-always-say-his-company-sucks/
The number of Uber drivers on the road has a direct relationship to the pay Uber offers those drivers. But that pay has been steeply declining, and with it, the availability of Ubers. A couple weeks ago, I found myself at the Burbank train station unable to get an Uber at all, with the app timing out repeatedly and announcing "no drivers available."
Normally, you can get a yellow taxi at the station, but years of Uber's predatory pricing has caused a drawdown of the local taxi-fleet, so there were no taxis available at the cab-rank or by dispatch. It took me an hour to get a cab home. Uber's bezzle destroyed local taxis and local transit – and replaced them with worse taxis that cost more.
Uber won't say why its margins are improving, but it can't be coming from scale. Before the pandemic, Uber had far more rides, and worse margins. Uber has diseconomies of scale: when you lose money on every ride, adding more rides increases your losses, not your profits.
Meanwhile, Lyft – Uber's also-ran competitor – saw its margins worsen over the same period. Lyft has always been worse at lying about it finances than Uber, but it is in essentially the exact same business (right down to the drivers and cars – many drivers have both apps on their phones). So Lyft's financials offer a good peek at Uber's true earnings picture.
Lyft is actually slightly better off than Uber overall. It spent less money on expensive props for its long con – flying cars, robotaxis, scooters, overseas clones – and abandoned them before Uber did. Lyft also fired 24% of its staff at the end of 2022, which should have improved its margins by cutting its costs.
Uber pays its drivers less. Like Lyft, Uber practices algorithmic wage discrimination, Veena Dubal's term describing the illegal practice of offering workers different payouts for the same work. Uber's algorithm seeks out "pickers" who are choosy about which rides they take, and converts them to "ants" (who take every ride offered) by paying them more for the same job, until they drop all their other gigs, whereupon the algorithm cuts their pay back to the rates paid to ants:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men
All told, wage theft and wage cuts by Uber transferred $1b/quarter from labor to Uber's shareholders. Historically, Uber linked fares to driver pay – think of surge pricing, where Uber charged riders more for peak times and passed some of that premium onto drivers. But now Uber trumpets a custom pricing algorithm that is the inverse of its driver payment system, calculating riders' willingness to pay and repricing every ride based on how desperate they think you are.
This pricing is a per se antitrust violation of Section 2 of the Sherman Act, America's original antitrust law. That's important because Sherman 2 is one of the few antitrust laws that we never stopped enforcing, unlike the laws banning predator pricing:
https://ilr.law.uiowa.edu/sites/ilr.law.uiowa.edu/files/2023-02/Woodcock.pdf
Uber claims an 11% margin improvement. 6-7% of that comes from algorithmic price discrimination and service cutbacks, letting it take 29% of every dollar the driver earns (up from 22%). Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi himself says that this is as high as the take can get – over 30%, and drivers will delete the app.
Uber's food delivery service – a baling wire-and-spit Frankenstein's monster of several food apps it bought and glued together – is a loser even by the standards of the sector, which is unprofitable as a whole and experiencing an unbroken slide of declining demand.
Put it all together and you get a picture of the kind of taxi company Uber really is: one that charges more than traditional cabs, pays drivers less, and has fewer cars on the road at times of peak demand, especially in the neighborhoods that traditional taxis had always underserved. In other words, Uber has broken every one of its promises.
We replaced the "evil taxi cartel" with an "evil taxi monopolist." And it's still losing money.
Even if Lyft goes under – as seems inevitable – Uber can't attain real profitability by scooping up its passengers and drivers. When you're losing money on every ride, you just can't make it up in volume.

How Amazon Is Ripping You Off
Shopping on Amazon? Stop! Watch this first.
Amazon is the world’s biggest online retailer. This one single juggernaut of a company is responsible for nearly 40% of all online sales in America. In an FTC lawsuit, they’re accused of using their mammoth size, and consumers’ dependence on them, to artificially jack up prices as high as possible, while prohibiting sellers on Amazon from charging lower prices anywhere else.
They’re accused of using a secret algorithm, codenamed "Project Nessie," to charge customers an estimated extra $1 billion dollars,
If this isn’t an abuse of power that hurts consumers, what is? So much for all of those “prime” deals you thought you were getting.
Project Nessie isn’t the only trick Amazon has been accused of using to exert its hulking dominance over the online retail industry — leading to higher prices for you.
Much of the FTC’s antitrust lawsuit centers around the treatment of independent merchants who sell items on Amazon’s online superstore — accounting for 60 percent of Amazon's sales.
Amazon allegedly uses strongarm tactics that force these sellers to keep their prices higher than they need to be. Like barring them from selling products for significantly less at other stores — or else risk being hidden in Amazon’s search results or having their sales stopped entirely.
And Amazon is accused of engaging in pay-to-play schemes and charging merchants excessive fees that end up costing you even more.
Independent sellers are effectively forced to pay Amazon to advertise their products prominently in search results. If they don’t fork over cash, then their products get buried underneath products of companies who do. This hurts sellers but also harms shoppers who have to parse through less relevant products that may be more expensive or lower quality.
And to be eligible for the coveted “Prime” badge on their items — which is considered crucial for competing on the platform — independent sellers are pushed into paying Amazon for additional services like warehousing and shipping, even if they could get those services cheaper elsewhere. If sellers forgo trying to qualify for Prime, their goods apparently become harder for customers to find.
When all of these extra fees are added up, Amazon takes around a 50 percent cut of each sale made by a third party. It’s projected that Amazon will earn around $125 billion from collecting fees in the U.S. in 2023, most of which get passed on to you.
By charging all of these extra fees and stifling independent companies from selling their products for less elsewhere, Amazon is using its dominance to essentially set prices for all consumers across the internet.
And when you combine Amazon’s control of ecommerce with all of the other industries it has entered by gobbling up companies — such as Whole Foods, One Medical, and MGM — you’re left with a behemoth that simply has too much power.
This is all part of a much larger problem of growing corporate dominance in America. In over 75% of U.S. industries, fewer companies now control more of their markets than they did twenty years ago.
The lack of competition and consumer choice has resulted in all of us paying more for goods because corporations like Amazon can raise their prices with impunity. By one estimate, corporate concentration has cost the typical American household $5,000 a year more than they would have spent if markets were truly competitive.
This power isn’t just being used to siphon more money from you. A giant corporation has the power to bust unions, keep workers’ wages low, and funnel money into our political system.
It’s a vicious cycle, making giant corporations more and more powerful.
But under the Biden administration, the government is making a strong effort to revive antitrust law and use its power to reign in big corporations that have grown too powerful.
We must stop the monopolization of America. This FTC lawsuit against Amazon is a great start.

the manager asked me how to find more workers like me. I had reminded her (again) that we need another worker in order to be fully staffed for the summer. She said she can only ‘afford’ to hire someone part time. I told her good luck, basically. Hope you like hiring desperate angry men who have zero reasons not to do crimes, ‘cause in most cases you get what you pay for. No way you’re finding another guy who has over a decade of industry knowledge, a degree, management experience, is clean, is fit enough, is fluent in boomer etiquette as well as bilingual, and happens to be so catastrophically down on their luck that they’d take this job. Especially part time. That wouldn’t even cover most people’s grocery bills, much less housing costs. She better hope she finds a really eccentric teenage horse girl with rich parents or we’re screwed. Actually that’s my other coworker except he’s a 30 year old man. Nah, this company is never gonna stoop to paying a worker what they’re actually worth. Like beeeeesh I’m worth almost double what you’re paying me in this biz alone and instead you started me on Seattle’s minimum wage and gave me a 2% raise while prices at the grocery store went up 30%. If the company didn’t offer me a house to live in along with the sh*t pay I wouldn’t even be here. I’d rather live in my car than funnel 80-90% of my paycheck directly into another landlord’s pocket. I’ll probably leave in the summer if she doesn’t hire another person, because I’m trying to build my art business back up on the side (so that I have a reason to live or whatever) and I can’t do that while this stupid company is forcing me to work overtime every week and then whining about how they can’t afford to pay me overtime. I can’t do anything with zero sick days. I can’t use my alleged vacation time. And they always want ME—the guy they’re paying as if I’m a damn disposable peasant—to fix this for them. I dunno, Sharon, did you ask your CEO if he’d consider selling one or two of his mansions so you could buy another laborer on the free market? It’s called ‘budgeting.’
