O e of the whales we saw yesterday was Salt—with a calf! The crew said it was their first sighting of her this season for them. I have seen Salt almost every year I’ve gone out, I think. Look up her story. She’s very cool. #capecod #whalewatch #atlanticwhitesharkconservancy #expedition #humpbackwhale #saltthewhale #whale #humpback #sealife #marinemammal #oceanlife #nature #getoutside https://www.instagram.com/p/CipU_y9uHjF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What you see is a image of the blue whale’s heart which is the largest on Earth, weighing 400 lbs and beating only 2-10 times per minute. It’s so big that a human could swim through its arteries!
The blue whale is the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth, even larger than most dinosaurs. It has a massive heart that pumps blood through its enormous body. It is about the size of a small golf cart or go-kart. It weighs about 400 pounds, which is more than 14 times as much as an elephant’s heart and 640 times as much as a human’s heart. It’s heart can beat only 2-10 times per minute when submerged, but it can increase to 25-37 times per minute when at the surface.
The blue whale's heart rate is influenced by the whale’s size, condition, and diving behavior. It’s heart pumps about 60 gallons of blood with each beat. That’s enough to fill a bathtub! The blood travels through arteries that are so wide that a human could swim through them. It's heart is very efficient at managing blood and oxygen levels during long dives. The whale can hold its breath for up to 90 minutes and dive as deep as 1,640 feet.
The blue whale’s heart is also very flexible and adaptable. It can change its shape and size depending on the whale’s needs and environment. It is truly a remarkable organ that enables this giant creature to survive and thrive in the ocean. I hope you enjoyed learning about it. 😊🙏🐋🐳

In the winter months of December and January, gray whales can be seen passing by California during their southbound migration to Mexico.
Gray whales make one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal, traveling about 10,000 miles round-trip and in some cases upwards of 14,000 miles. Traveling past heavily populated regions along the West Coast, gray whales are at risk of boat collisions or entanglement in fishing gear.
To help these graceful animals, always give them plenty of space.

Passing the Time C7A8298 by Daniel D'Auria
Via Flickr:
A few female elephant seals pass the time relaxing on the beach at Whale Point in the Falkland Islands. Of course, time passed isn’t complete without some form of entertainment. Since elephant seals don’t have cellphones, books, or TV, they most commonly entertain themselves with some form of friendly sparring. I imagine that these relatively nonviolent encounters prepare them for the rare moments when true defense measures are needed. Long periods of sleep were punctuated with occasional eye opening, warning gapes, and the rare inchworm-like movements along the beach. It was a truly intriguing and relaxing day.

Out of all the animals I've studied and illustrated, dolphins have left the strongest impression on me. Although I didn't know much about them at first, I'm now captivated by their unique shapes and vibrant colors. Learning about these creatures has been a truly delightful experience.
Long-Beaked Common Dolphin
The Long-Beaked Common Dolphin has been a topic of controversy in the past, as it was initially believed to be the same species as the Short Beaked Common Dolphin. However, they are now recognized as distinct species within the same family (Delphinidae). These dolphins are likely the most widespread species in the world.
This particular subspecies is exclusively found close to the shores of Africa and is larger and heavier than its counterparts that are found in various locations around the world.

We came upon the fine team from IFAW at First Encounter Beach doing a necropsy on a deceased pilot whale. It’s alway sad to see but encouraging that we are learning more with each passing—hopefully this will help in the future. #capecod #firstencounterbeach #eastham #ifaw #marinemammal #marinemammalrescue #pilotwhale https://www.instagram.com/p/CovNkGbPuO7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy #TwoTruthsTuesday! Join us for this week's two truths and a lie game featuring species on the #NationalMarineSanctuariesStamps.
Do you know which of these three statements isn't true about the California sea lion? Let us know in the comments!
1. California sea lion males bark like dogs to communicate with other males and females.
2. The typical lifespan of a California sea lion is 45 years.
3. Adult males are generally larger than females and are mostly dark brown to black in color.
