Watched potrait of a lady on fire and i cried, obviously.
What do i say about this movie other than it was so beautiful, seriously 20 minutes into the movie and i just knew it was gonna be fantastic and so heart wrenching and i was right. The acting, the writing, the directing are all so beautiful. God i wish i understood French because i just know the dialog would've been 10 times more beautiful and more heartbreaking even though it's already so fucking good!
I teared up a couple of time but i actually cried at the end. I got so emotional during their goodbye scene when Marianne hugged Héloïses mother just so she could hug Héloïse, the way she grabbed her and held her so tight but then had to push herself off of her, oh my god the way Marianne ran downstairs so fast, needing to get away because it was so clearly breaking her heart and then Héloïse told her to turn around and look at her one last time.. fuck me, it was so fucking heart wrenching (there's genuinely no better way to describe this movie, this is just gonna be me saying it's heart wrenching every 2 seconds, because it fucking was!!). Also the way i just knew when they were reading that book that that'll be how these two women's story end, i just knew it and i hopped so bad for them run away together or at least find their way back to eachother and when it ended like THAT it broke me, the music playing loudly, Marianne seeing Héloïse but Héloïse not seeing her but remembering her because of the music, god i just felt Héloïses emotions even from far away and it broke me even more the closer the camera got and the more i saw of her and then she just started smiling, my god it was good, it was so fucking good!!

Astonishment and joy
I still remember the first time when we spent time alone we were starting to get used to each other's silence and presence the first time we touched, I made the first move and you allowed me to hold your hand you noticed the rhythm of my heart beats are unusual you kept your head on my shoulder and I felt the butterflies The first time we kissed, all the voices in my head stopped I could only see your face clearly Everything apart from that felt blurry I felt the 'astonishment and joy' Abigail was talking about I understood, in those moments, that all those movies and songs weren't lying about anything the first time we went on a date, it was burger king because of my indecisiveness I didn't thank you enough for being so understanding I got used to eating with you, eventually. you told me stories about your childhood I was getting to know you the first time we got intimate in a public washroom I was so excited and scared But you held me, & I felt content and kinda turned on???? you tasted salty, because of all the spicy food you've been eating I loved it the first time we booked a room I didn't feel as scared as I thought I would it was a bit awkward at first, neither of us could stop smiling I remember every gasp, every breath, every clench, and every moan the realizations on your face, the things we learned about our bodies "do all lovers feel like they're discovering something new" yes they do Heloise!

i recently saw this video analyzing portrait of a lady on fire (2019) and had the deep urge to write some takeaways that i think are truly so beautiful and prove how the film is unlike anything else in it’s realm.
Tumblr media
the first thing that i think is so intriguing and unique that i need to share is the scene where héloise and marianne are on the beach together. it’s cold and windy, which is intially why i thought they were wearing the scarves to cover their mouths but it turns out, like many other sequences and moments in the movie, it had a deeper meaning. their first kiss takes place on the beach and they both signal that they want to kiss each other by lowering their scarves to unveil their lips. the director, céline sciamma, included this as a visual signal for consent. this is something small, but turns out to be entirely different from most films in the romance genre where the first kiss is always portrayed as something spontaneous, and therefore making it passionate but in portrait of a lady on fire they challenge the idea that consent takes away from the passion of the moment. it’s one of the only movies i’ve seen done this and i think flipping the narrative on the topic is something really significant and needed.
Tumblr media
another thing that i thought was really cool and interesting was the fact that neither heloise or marinne smiled much during the movie. the first time heloise smiled was actually an hour and nine minutes into the film, and even after that she rarely does so. turns out this was another brilliant detail included by céline sciamma to resist the objectification of women. when i figured this out i was so happy because i can’t even begin to recount all the situations where i’ve been told to smile or asked why i am not smiling. these questions only deepen the assumption and expectation that a woman’s most important job is to be visually appealing and pretty to look at. heloise and marianne, by not smiling, portray their desire to instead of appear as an object meant for someone else to enjoy, they are the subjects in their own story. subverting the patriarchal norm that women have to always be smiling is something that should be focused on more because it’s a very real thing experienced by a lot of people.
Tumblr media
i just really enjoy the fact that this film speaks more in the things left unsaid than in those said, and it leaves a lot left for the audience to analyze and observe. i think what makes portrait of a lady on fire such a cinematic masterpiece is it’s implementation of feelings, thoughts, and meaning in a way that is not completely obvious at first glance. like in the way héloise and marianne never say ”i love you” to each other but we still know that they feel it due to all the small details and gestures that are portrayed between the two to make the audience believe it to exist. (now that i’ve gotten this rant out of my system i can resume my evening, thank you for coming to my ted talk)

I wonder, if MC told Qiu "ask me to say", does Qiu dream of that moment? Do they remember it on important dates such as MC's birthday, anniversaries (because I can deffo see Qiu having the day they met, the day they became a couple, etc marked in a calendar or memorized in their heart)... the day MC left?
How much do they wish to turn back in time to that exact moment and tell them "please, don't leave"?
Hahaha I am sure that moment haunts Qiu.
Like you said, it probably floats up unbidden whenever Qiu thinks a little too hard about MC, whether it be something that reminds them of MC, or a special date.
P.S. It was also inspired by the vibes of this scene in Portrait of a Lady on Fire between Héloïse and Marianne.
Explanation of the context of the plot below—italicized part from Google, the rest is added by me (obviously spoilers for the movie, so avoid it if you want to watch it unspoiled. But watch it!! It's so good. That movie changed my life.)
Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly.
And basically they fall in love, and eventually the time comes when the painting is done, and Marianne must leave, and Héloïse must get married. The scene is of Marianne being sad about it, and Héloïse asks, "do you want me to resist the marriage", and Marianne says yes. Héloïse asks, "are you asking me to?" and after a long pause, Marianne says no.
I LOVE THAT. Oh god, that scene destroyed me.
I feel like the scene is similar to what I wanted to achieve with MC's "ask me to stay" and Qiu's "I can't".

The way most of the portrait of a lady on fire fanfics are aus is killing me!! Sure i already read 2 multi chapter fics that take place after the end of the movie and ends with Héloïse and Marianne in love, together living in the same house and they're both genuinely so well written, i teared up reading both, but my god i want more!! I need more!
The other multi chapter fics are mostly aus, there's one that's a Warhammer au, no idea what that is but it doesn't sound very portrait of a lady on fire, there's also an X-Files au, which is just ridiculous, like how can someone watch that movie and think X-Files... i haven't read them but they seem to do pretty good, being at the top of most kudos/hits/comments.
I genuinely don't mean to sound ungrateful because the fics i read i loved very much, i just wish there's more. Also i understand that writing fanfics is a hobby and fanfic writers don't owe me anything, i genuinely don't mean to sound ungrateful but my god aus you are my enemy!!
Also there's like 3 reaction videos on YouTube of Portrait and that's also killing me! I need to see people crying, losing their minds over this movie! So now I'm listening to podcasts.
I don't think a movie has ever made me do this, read bunch of fics, watch reaction, listen to podcasts, this usually just happens with tv shows. I just really loved Héloïse and Marianne and it's nice to have a ship to fixate on!
