One of the reasons I quit figure skating was because 2 or 3 bad competitions left me with extreme performance anxiety - aka: stage fright. After 2-3 years of solid competition that built my confidence and made me love the sport, it took a fraction of that time to tear me down (after a growth spurt) . And I didn’t recover from it. (AND…it started to spill into other competitive sports 😞) It’s THIS concept (#listentothepodcast) that I wish I had learned and understood at the time, and it’s this same concept that I applied to my return to marathon training this past spring that allowed me to ACTUALLY enjoy it and get the most of the experience. #ListenUp #Podcast And wow, did it ever make a difference. Performance orientation versus mastery orientation : it can be applied to literally ANYTHING we do (sport, diet, work goals, school exams, etc) - anything where we typically tend to focus on the END result! It can allow us to be more present in (and embrace) every moment, and it can be the exact concept that takes our worry off the end result (even though that’s what you are likely looking for ;) ) But in this case specifically, we talked about how it applies to #runners, and #running! 🏃🏼‍♀️ Thanks @miken_running for having me! 20 Tips for First-time Marathoners
1) Despite having never noticed it before, there’s a good chance that your thighs touch. You should probably go into this assuming they do. (Chaffing is real!) 2) Consider wearing a sweatband around your head. If that’s not your style, maybe opt for a wristband, so you can at least wipe your brow. 3) You may feel compelled to carb-load, or eat in some other way besides your usual to “prepare” for your run. The only thing that will prepare you for are lost minutes as you wait for a porta-potty. 4) Stick with the corral that you are assigned.  Corrals are assigned based on your estimated finish time.  While you might be tempted to start with the first group, all you are really doing is adding to the problem of already-crowed corrals.  You will be timed based on when you cross the start, so it really doesn't matter anyway.  If you think you are faster than those in your corral, let it be. It'll be much more fun to pass them than to be passed by others! 5) Pace yourself. Don’t let the excitement of the race day environment influence the pace that you’ve trained for.  6) Toilet paper? Ha! Think again.  7) Reapplying sunscreen at medical stations is worth it.  8) It's not a race! Okay, maybe it is. But it's your first one, so don't be too hard on yourself.  9) Chapstick.  10) You may think you won't need to refuel, but you'll probably wish you had around mile 10. Carry your favorite fuel with you, or pick some up at an aid station. 11) Tanlines happen. Dress wisely! 12) Don't forget your stunna shades. 13) Use the hills strategically. Gravity can be your friend! 14) Consider preparing for inflammation ahead of time with some ibuprofen half way through. 15) A new race is not an ideal time for new shoes. Stick with what's comfortable and broken in. 16) Never had trouble with muscle cramps before?  You might during a marathon.  Be prepared to stop and work them out.  Make sure to replenish your electrolytes appropriately to avoid this! 17) Wear your hair in a comfortable style.  Make sure it is held securely out of your way.  The last thing you will want to slow down for is to fix your hair! 18) Find a way to have your cell phone on you.  There's nothing much worse than finishing a race and not being able to find your friends and/or family! 19) SMILE!  There are cameras everywhere. :) 20) Be proud!  You did it!  Don't let anyone tell you how silly that 26.2 sticker on your car is.  Post your accomplishment to social media, brag to your coworkers, and write about it in your annual Christmas letter, because YOU EARNED IT!
