Last thing you ate: Chef Boyardee ravioli, salt and vinegar potato chips, and some honey graham crackers

A movie you think everyone should watch? Tomboy by Céline Sciamma. Café de Flore by Jean-Marc Vallée. The Land Before Time: Journey Through the Mists by the nostalgia of the 90s (actually directed by Roy Allen Smith, though).

A book you think everyone should read? Postscript by Cecelia Ahern – especially after reading PS. I Love You. The first book is about surviving grief, the second about living beyond it. Highly recommend.

Reactions As I Read: Story 1: ● the art is gorgeous! crisp inking. and I don’t know what it is about the Detective Comics and how they appear digitally on the app, but the effect is always stunning to my eyes. ● Bruce, wouldn’t it be better to try to do your investigation while in your civvies rather than try to explain why you and Batman are in the same place? ● could you dust while you’re crouched on the rafters, B-man? thanks! ● i wonder why he’s so sure she’s lying? ● League of Assassins has entered the chat ● yet again the villains wastes the perfect opportunity to slay the hero. but plot demands. ● in the count’s mind: screw you, Batman, that wasn’t a miracle—I planned all that! ● 👏👏👏

Synopsis: Story 1: When Count Orsoni, another shipping magnate, is attacked and almost killed, Bruce Wayne decides to visit the man, who is an old friend. Upon arriving at the Count's castle in the foreign country he resides, Bruce is welcomed by Mara Thursday, the Count's cousin and Dr. Darrk, one of Orsoni's friends. However, Bruce is not allowed to see the Count, although he is invited to stay in the place.

Having previously stopped the League of Assassins from murdering another shipping magnate, Bruce decides to investigate the case as Batman and he starts prowling the castle, looking for the Count. He is distracted when Mara Thursday screams in her room and when Batman enters, she makes up a story about an attacker that left without harming her. Batman deduces that this was all a distraction and he rushes to the Count's chambers, but he finds nothing but an empty and disturbed room.

Batman deduces that the Count was kidnapped recently and he starts looking in the castle, when he is suddenly attacked by another member of the League of Assassins. Batman manages to defeat the assassin and he proceeds to look on the hidden places of the castle. Batman finally reaches the cellar, where he finds the Count but falls for a trap and is forced to lay on top of an execution altar. Batman deduces the identity of the killer as Dr. Darrk and he reveals himself as the president of the League of Assassins and prepares Batman for his execution.

Batman is shackled to the altar and he is forced to hold a rope that keeps an axe from beheading him. Dr. Darrk leaves with the certainty that Batman's grip will surely fail and he forgets about the Count. As Batman in fact starts losing his strength, the Count recovers and, crawling aimlessly, he pushes the statue of a saint on top of the altar, which falls near Batman's head at the same time as he lets go of the rope. The axe falls on the statue, saving Batman's life and the shackles are broken by the impact.

Batman takes the Count to safety, but by the time he goes to the main rooms of the castle, he finds only the assassin he previously defeated and Mara Thursday. Darrk had left the place long ago and Batman arrests Mara and the assassin, who confess all they know about the League, which is not much.

Story 2: When a residential building is blown up, the sole clue is a book taken out from Gotham Public Library. Finding the book is popular among young hippies/protesters, Barbara Gordon decides to investigate further as Batgirl. Tracing the address of the last person to take out the book in question, Batgirl finds that it belongs to a girl who is a member of the youth group Peaceful Protest. However, when Batgirl informs her the book was found at the site of a bombing, the girl freaks out and slams the door on Batgirl.

Tailing the young woman to a theater known as "Up Against the Wall Baby", Batgirl soon stumbles upon the groups leader Mal who has decided peaceful protesting no longer works and wants to begin using more violent methods. Finding Batgirl at their latest rally, she is knocked out during a performance and when she comes too, she finds that Mal has placed her in a room rigged to explode should she step out of the circle she is standing on.

WALLET — a black leather bifold. long and thin. simple and sleek. he always gravitates towards a similar piece whenever the previous one succumbs to the wear and tear of use. this one is likely already cracking along its outer crease, but only enough to be noticed by the owner himself. the contents inside are fairly run-of-the mill : a Bank of America checkbook. a debit and credit card to match. a small black ballpoint pen. cash tucked into the opposite pocket, just to keep on hand ( some singles and fives and a pair of twenties ). Anthem Blue Cross and Medicare insurance cards. a New York state driver’s license that expired in ‘72, tucked behind a Maine state driver’s license that expired in 2014, tucked behind yet another Maine state ID, this one recently renewed ---  even despite the dramatic age difference in all the photos, those doe eyes never stop sparkling through the years. a half-spent gift card for his favorite ice cream shop on the mainland. a Portland, Maine public library card. a couple crinkled receipts that he has yet to log in his check register. a United States passport, first issued in 1959 and adorned over the decades with stamps from Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Russia, Israel and Syria. he also holds onto his expired original passport, from his family’s immigration, as a keepsake. finally, there’s the St. Christopher / St. Michael visor clip he kept from his NYC cab driving days, slipped over the pocket where he keeps his cash.

perhaps most importantly, he always keeps two photos on hand: 

     the first is his favorite family portrait of the Pruitt-Rossi clan --- his mother, his father, all of his sisters ( including Alice ), and himself at barely 3 years old. taken just before their emigration from Tuscany. the sepia photograph is obviously aged, but has been tended to by careful hands, so that the portrait’s visibility remains in-tact.

     the second? verse-dependent. in his Far Cry verse it’s a candid photo of his wife, Sarah Pruitt ( née Harper ) and their baby boy, Sigur, when he was but a few years old. the both of them smiling wide and mounted on the back of Sarah’s mare, Mara. a moment of sweet reprieve and domestic bliss, captured somewhere in the Whitetail Mountains before the Reaping. in the verses of his main timeline ( and just about every other verse ), it’s a candid of Missus Mildred Gunning which he too shot himself. Millie is joyfully looking down at her ( their ) three-week-old daughter Sarah, just after her Baptism, with happy tears brimming in her eyes. John managed to keep himself together that day, allowing his own tears to flow at last in the privacy of the rectory.

MOST USED PLAYLIST VINYLS — he has a difficult time picking a favorite vinyl if you ask him outright. but you can easily identify the few he plays the most by the spines of their sleeves, the cardboard softening and the color washed away from the corrosion that comes with flipping them open, over and over. his favored picks include:

Last song I listened to: I put on a Marty Robbins album in the car on Friday and the last track I listened to was “Cool Water”.

Last film I watched: While You Were Sleeping, which is not at all my usual fare but in my defense: 1) my beloved housemates chose it, 2) we were all varying levels of drunk, and 3) it was cuter than I anticipated.

Last TV show I watched: Shark Tank, which, again, not something I would have chosen (it stresses me tf out) but my housemates love it.  That aside, I rewatched a few episodes of Berserk (1997) yesterday morning.

Village of the Damned is a 1995 American science fiction-horror film directed by John Carpenter and starring Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley, Linda Kozlowski, Michael Pare, Mark Hamill, and Meredith Salenger. It is a remake of the 1960 film of the same name which in turn is based on the novel The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. The 1995 remake is set in Northern California, whereas the book and original film were both set in the United Kingdom. The 1995 film was marketed with the tagline, "Beware the Children". this was the last film Christopher Reeve starred in before he was paralyzed on May 27, 1995 from a horse race which left him a spinal cord injury, tuning him into a quadriplegic.

Plot

All of the people, animals and birds within the quiet coastal town of Midwich in California's Marin County fall unconscious for six hours one day at exactly 10am. Following this "blackout", ten females are mysteriously pregnant, including a virgin as well as a married woman who has not been sexually active for months. None of the women seek abortions, and later all the babies are born simultaneously on one night - five boys and five girls, though one female is stillborn. The children are all healthy and sound, but have pale skin, unusually soft, flat-sided platinum blonde hair; fierce intellect, and cobalt eyes. However, they do not appear to possess a conscience or personalities. The children display eerie psychic abilities that can result in violent and deadly consequences whenever they experience pain or provocation.

The children soon "pair off", except for one of the boys, David, whose intended partner was the stillborn girl. As a result of this imbalance, David is the runt of the group. Although he resembles the other children and retains some degree of psychic power, David is smaller, and is unlike the rest of the children in that he has a capacity for human emotion, and compassion. He and his mother Jill McGowan (the local school teacher) share a brief conversation about this, displaying empathy and remorse.

The children's leader is Mara, the daughter of a local physician, Dr. Alan Chaffee. Even as a baby, Mara exhibited vengeful tendencies with regard to the use of her abilities, using her mind to force her mother to boil her arm in hot soup and commit suicide by jumping off the cliff. The children, who are by now known to have a hive mind, eventually move to the local barn as their classroom and for survival.

Soon it is learned that there are other colonies of blackout children in foreign countries, but due to their inhuman nature they were quickly eliminated, in some cases at the cost of destroying the entire town. The scientific team in Midwich quickly flee the town to escape the growing chaos. Government scientist, Dr. Susan Verner, is forced to show the children the preserved stillborn baby she secretly kept to study, and the preserved corpse is seen to be undeniably alien. The children collectively force her to fatally stab herself. An angry mob gathers to kill the children, but the leader is forced to set herself on fire and burns to death, and later the state police are mentally controlled into shooting each other in a chaotic gun battle.

In order to rid the town of the children, Alan devises a plan: to detonate a briefcase of timed explosives inside the children's classroom. By thinking of a brick wall, he is able to create a mental barrier and keep the presence of the time-bomb a secret from the children. Jill begs him to spare David because he is not like the others. Alan attempts to do this by asking David to leave the classroom to get his notebook from his car. The children begin to suspect that Alan is hiding something, and they slowly "destroy" the wall. Finally, Jill shows up, but the children stop her and attempt to use mind control. David, tired of this, rushes to her defense and knocks Mara over. The children turn on David, but Jill rushes him from the building. As soon as the children discover that Alan is hiding his knowledge of the bomb, it detonates in an enormous explosion, killing Alan and the eight alien children.

Jill and David, however, are safe in a car fleeing the site; she says that they will both move to a place where nobody knows them. David looks off into the distance as they drive away.
