One thing I enjoy about how messed up of a relationship soushin is is how, unless Nankidai finds room to explore it otherwise, there is no meaningful line between Hiyori being nice to Shin because he's doing a job where such manipulation is explicitly a part of it and Hiyori being nice because he genuinely likes Shin.

Sometimes it feels like in this fandom when people want to highlight soushin as an abusive relationship they cling on to AI Shin saying Hiyori enjoyed seeing him afraid, but an aspect that I think could be examined more is how it's still abuse even when Hiyori is so "kind" to Shin that Shin loves and trusts him and wants him to be a part of his family. There are parts of Hiyori that Shin (rightfully) fears and parts of Hiyori that Shin adores and neither cancel the other out.

3-1 shows us Hiyori wants to have fun out of life and treats other people, those without authority over him, as his toys. Less than "human" despite a love for "humans". Shin is no exception to being an object of gratification for Mr "ball of desire". Someone Hiyori may have played house with once upon a time but not someone Hiyori could meaningfully show compassion for.

#star trek #star trek discovery #section 31 #i don't actually mind section 31 as a narrative element it just needs to be done right #and it rarely has been since its introduction #the narrative purpose section 31 serves is to be like 'hey maybe the Federation Isn't Perfect'#or like 'maybe it's got some systemic problems that are being allowed to continue because they benefit the people in power'#if you just treat it like another part of starfleet/the federation that just has a few bad apples it loses that narrative purpose #because the entire point of it is that it IS the bad apple and it IS spoiling the bunch simply by existing as itself #and that if the federation wants to have any chance at all of actually being what it claims to be #then section 31 and what it represents needs to be excised #you simply CANNOT have 'unambiguous postscarcity utopia' and 'omnipresent unrestricted intelligence agency' at the same time #at least not if you want to have any degree of narrative consistency #the last time i watched this arc in discovery was before i got into ds9 (and met mars!! ily airota) and it's almost unbearable now

Everyone's talking about Wish right now.... The only thing I can say about WISH.......let's hope it's like a Frozen 1 type thing. Where the trailers were ABSOLUTE ASS but then the film turned out really good. TT0TT

I mean.....there is a difference between the two. While the west got weird trailers that didn't matter for Frozen (Olaf vs Sven carrot thing), JPN and other countries got trailers that actually showcased the plot and drama in an interesting way.... And Wish.....well...... Wish at least gives us a villain and a part of an argument.....and I can't see that argument leading anywhere.....great tbh. So maybe not the best comparisons but let's hope for the Frozen 1 vibe!

Anyway I'm not liking what I'm seeing so far, but I'm hoping its better than the ass disaster Frozen 2 and Ralph 2 were. ;w;

the thing is i think steven moffat is. to be totally honest. an absolutely brilliant writer and the themes he explores are ones i personally find more compelling (the doctor as a fairytale figure & the show as overt fantasy, notably). but his gender politics makes me want to screeeeeeeam
