The Rise of Mamata: The Untold Story of Trinamool Congress' Founding

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is a major political party in West Bengal, India that has dominated state politics since coming to power in 2011 under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.

The party was formed in 1997 as a breakaway faction of the Indian National Congress, which had long held political hegemony in West Bengal. The seeds of the Trinamool Congress were sown during a period of political turmoil and fragmentation in West Bengal.

The Roots of Discontent Against Congress Rule

Since 1977, West Bengal had been ruled almost continuously by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Left Front. While the Left made some progress in land reforms and decentralization of power, over time its rule had become increasingly associated with stagnation, lack of industrial development, and the rise of corruption and political violence. By the early 1990s there was growing discontent against Left rule. At the same time, the state unit of the Indian National Congress was weakened by continuous electoral defeats and factionalism within the party organization.

This created political space for other parties to emerge. One such party was the All India Trinamool Congress formed in 1997 by Mamata Banerjee, who broke away from the Congress along with several other leaders. The origins of this breakaway faction date back to Mamata Banerjee’s emergence as a young political leader in West Bengal during the Congress rule in the 1980s.

Mamata Banerjee’s Rise in Congress Politics

Mamata Banerjee first stepped into politics as a young Congress activist while she was still a student at Jogamaya Devi College in Kolkata, which was a center of student politics and anti-government protests. She quickly gained notice for her fiery oratory style and courage in confronting the Communist student activists who then dominated most educational institutions. Her political mentor was Subrata Mukherjee, a veteran Congress leader of South Kolkata, under whose tutelage Mamata cut her political teeth.

In 1984, Mamata contested and won the Lok Sabha election from the South Calcutta constituency as a Congress candidate at the young age of 29, making national headlines as the “giant killer” for defeating seasoned Communist leader Somnath Chatterjee. As an MP she joined Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi’s reformist brigade of young leaders in the party. Over the next decade, she consolidated her position within the West Bengal Congress organization with support from Subrata Mukherjee and rising through the ranks to become the state’s Youth Congress President in 1992 and Congress Secretary in West Bengal in 1993.

However, electoral setbacks for Congress across India in 1989 and 1991 pushed the party into an existential crisis. In West Bengal, Congress slid into disarray and factional feuds due to its continuous losses to the Left Front. Mamata Banerjee grew increasingly disillusioned. She publicly criticized the Congress leadership for not doing enough to revive party fortunes and for being insensitive to the grassroots situation. The last straw was the Congress Working Committee rejecting her proposal for an electoral alliance with the Left to defeat the bourgeois BJP party in 1996. This widening rift set the stage for Mamata’s exit from the Congress.

Formation of Trinamool Congress

On January 1, 1998 Mamata Banerjee formally announced the establishment of her own party called the All India Trinamool Congress. The name “Trinamool” means grassroots in Bengali and signified a party born out of the people. It was officially registered with the Election Commission of India on September 26, 1998. Ananda Bazar Patrika

Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) is a daily newspaper popular in West Bengal. It is a regional bengali newspaper which has over 1.2 million readers making it the top bengali newspaper in the market. Initially published as a four page evening daily, ABP group now has a massive multimedia platform varying from print to television and online. It was founded by Suresh Chandra Majumdar and Prafulla Kumar Sarkar a century ago in 1922. It then ventured into the online space as an e publication in 2001.

ABP private limited group owns Anandabazar Patrika and the shares for the same are equally divided amongst the Sarkar family, Aveek Kumar Sarkar (25%), Arup Sarkar (25%), Shithi Sarkar (25%) and Atideb Sarkar (25%). The family hence owns 100% of the shares and is an individually owned company. The chief editor for the newspaper until 2021 was Arup Kumar Sarkar but recently the title was given to his son, Atideb, marking the official handover of the company to the next generation. Atideb is also the youngest chief editor of India.

When Anandabazar Patrika started in 1922, it was an independent publication against the British government. After independence and following the separation, for many years its political associations were with the party in power of the state. This meant that it was pro CPI(M) for a while. It was then in support of Trinamool Congress until 2015 when the board had disagreements with Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal. The paper suddenly shifted to a more pro BJP from a very anti BJP standpoint almost immediately following the incident. Although not publicly stated anywhere, ABP group is now a supporter of the ideologies of the NaMo government. Even in their televised programmes, the ABP group channels share similar beliefs.

It is evidently clear that the ownership affects the content a publication produces so the most important step for any individual is recognising the tone of the news they are consuming. First and foremost, there must be a need to look at all points of views when reading articles and to achieve that one cannot simply rely on a single newspaper for their information. Team I-PAC in TMC's War Room: 3-4 members working on every seat, strategy to win Didi, Youngsters from Oxford, Cambridge to IIT-IIM

The IPAC team working to bring Mamata Banerjee to power in Bengal includes youngsters from Oxford, Cambridge to IIT-IIM. Most are aged between 25 and 35 years. The average age of team members is 25 years. All these elections are part of the team of strategist Prashant Kishore.

I-PAC started functioning in West Bengal in

June-2019. On the advice of this team, TMC launched many new campaigns. The announcement of the candidates was also given great importance to the Ipec's appraisal. The candidates whose performance was poor, their tickets were cut. A member of I-PAC told, 'There is someone from almost every state in our team. There are people from different professions. From nanotechnology savvy to law savvy are in the team. Journalism also has a lot of people.

Earlier some foreigners were also part of the team, but there is no foreigner in the team working in Bengal. The special thing is that working in I-PAC is not like a company but as a college. There are 294 assemblies, all have team members.

There are a total of 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, all of which have members of the I-PAC. Somewhere there are three members and there are four members. These people are working closely with the local candidate. Give them public feedback. Social media campaigns run. Government schemes work to reach the people. Also, the campaigns which are being run all over the state, make them run in their area. There are many members in this team who also worked with Prashant Kishore in the Delhi elections. On the basis of feedback-facts, we describe candidates as right and wrong, whereas the leaders who are in the party have some interest. That is why they give feedback to the party according to their own. There are more than 700 members of Ipac in Bengal. Some are in office work. Some are in fieldwork.

Prashant Kishor, who once worked for Modi, is a well-known political strategist. Right now, his team is working for Mamta Banerjee in Bengal.

The objective of this program is to reach the homes of the people and solve their problems and make them accessible to the government schemes.
