“Two Anaander Mianaais? There are thousands.” I hitched an infant higher in my arms to forestall more tears.

“Your indulgence, my Lord. You have thousands of bodies, but the broadcast says—” Justice of Maln slipped into silent communication as another child tugged at its trousers. The broadcast says that there are two factions, two groups of Anaander Mianaai. At my motionless indication, it began the news from the beginning. Garsedd. It came down to Garsedd.

“Stop!” The children at my feet stared up at me in a constellation of consternation. I took a slow, slow breath. “That’s impossible.” Justice of Maln didn’t move, didn’t indicate in any way that it wanted to speak, but it had been my only companion in the nursery for... how long, now? Centuries. “Ship?”

“Your indulgence, Lord,” it said again. “How is this civil war news to you?” If there is only you. If I communicated between my bodies, my limbs, as I did? Again, no movement, nothing but ancillary stillness, but its reluctance to verbalize made its agitation clear.

“You think there are more than two,” I said slowly. “You think there’s another.” Pointed silence.

People don’t know that the nurseries and cloning laboratories are sited on ships because no one else is welcome in those places. But the resources to clone myself and remain a thousand thousand strong throughout the unimaginable width of space—this process fuels, fueled, many annexations. Anaander Mianaai does not spring fully-formed from her own forehead. There are no aptitudes for loyalty and sensitivity high enough to clear someone to help; Anaander Mianaai minds herself.

When Tstur Palace fell, we were already gone: a segment of the palace pulled away like a seed pod, tugged by smaller, safer ships until we could open the engines.

Space really is vast. We had no real heading. I had plans for alien interference—was this alien interference?—and plans for uprisings and annexations gone sour, but a civil war hadn’t crossed my mind. I had been occupied with raising myself: ensuring there was no genetic drift or mutation, that every copy was capable of interfacing with the implants that hosted my consciousness and interfaced with ships. The idea of that consciousness narrowing and breaking apart—how? Informational lag was always a problem, but this was something else.

“Garsedd...” The word did something terrible to my nervous system; several of my bodies twitched in my sleep, all in unison. All in unison.

Maln rushed. Lubbock dove for his truncheon and scooped it into his right hand as Maln’s saber whistled overhead. Lubbock batted the saber the rest of the way aside and followed up with a kick to the shin and a short jab to Maln’s ear.

Maln didn’t care. He backed up and reassessed. Lubbock didn’t like the look of that and pressed his attack, using the heavy truncheon to strike in short, precise chopping motions to keep Maln off-balance.

Apparently, Maln knew that game and instead of using his saber to slash as expected, he used it like a curved rapier. He thrust and probed Lubbock’s defense. This officially upgraded him from ‘dangerous’ to ‘deadly’ in Lubbock’s book.

Lubbock parried another thrust and then grabbed a steak skillet off the table to his left and flung it at Maln. The skillet connected with Maln’s weight-bearing leg with a satisfying crunch.

Maln went down, turning the trip into a roll. Lubbock cursed. Then Maln snatched three plates and flung them all at Lubbock. One went wide, another high, but the third flew straight at Lubbock’s solar plexus.

In a moment of inspiration that would’ve made his father proud—Nelamera rest his soul—Lubbock took the truncheon in both hands, choked up on the handle, and hit the incoming plate like a baseball line drive, sending it Maln’s direction.

Hm. My c❀w❀rkers... I'll call them Butt❀n, Pyth❀n, and... S❀wbug. Sure, that w❀rks. As f❀r Pyth❀n's friend... I'll call her... D❀llie.

Butt❀n is p❀ssibly the ❀ne I c❀uld... M❀st call a friend, alm❀st? I think I c❀uld maybe call them at least like, n❀t a raging assh❀le. Basically. Butt❀n is the ❀ne wh❀'s enam❀red with ❀ur little m❀th friend. Als❀, recently had a plant gr❀w t❀❀ big f❀r the p❀t, and had t❀ d❀ the walk ❀f shame t❀ g❀ put it ❀ut! We're ❀n g❀❀d terms, I think.

Pyth❀n I have very little t❀ say ❀n ❀ther than that he's an assh❀le, and we butt heads c❀nstantly. I abs❀lutely despise him. /plat.

S❀wbug... D❀es any❀ne kn❀w anything ab❀ut S❀wbug, really... It's n❀t like it ever helps us with anything, ❀r even c❀mes ❀ut ❀f it's h❀le t❀ d❀ things. We basically handle it ❀urselves. D❀llie sucks. I hate her w❀rk and her as a pers❀n. I have n❀ idea why Pyth❀n hangs ❀ut with her. Fun fact - I g❀t my Snapdrag❀n fr❀m her, and they were S❀ maln❀urished and p❀❀rly cared f❀r. And she was HAPPY with that. Eugh.

Speaking ❀f my Snapdrag❀n! They're gr❀wing in nicely. This is, like, their sixth p❀t ❀r s❀mething!? I c❀uldn't be m❀re pr❀ud. I mean, they're ❀nly ab❀ut 150ish cm, but it's a figure ❀f speech.

My ❀ther tw❀ plants are a venus fly trap which I recently had t❀ put ❀ut ( my p❀❀r baby... my p❀❀r little Dr❀sera... ) and a cute little butterfly plant I'm taking care ❀f f❀r a few reas❀ns. Unf❀rtunately, D❀llie had a hand in that ❀ne, t❀❀, and my venus fly trap is actually a clipping ❀ff an❀ther fly trap... I'll call them Dr❀sera and Jaws t❀ tell them apart. I als❀ g❀t Jaws fr❀m s❀me❀ne else, wh❀ ALS❀ sucked. Basically all ❀f my plants are rescues. I have a huge heart, what can I say! ❀w❀

Anaander 4 (Final?)

I dropped into real-space and caught a recording:

“eek to discuss trade or embassies, maintain half a day’s distance from Athoek Station and transmit your details. If you are a larger class of ship with armaments, please maintain two days' distance from Athoek Station, deactivate all weapons, and initiate contact.” A pause, and restart: “This is Administrator Celar. Welcome to the Provisional Republic of Two Systems. If you are a freighter or other unarmed transport and you seek to discuss...”

I started a pot of tea while I recorded my message. The taste was—brighter. Fuller. There was a tangible difference beyond the leaves' freshness. Two days... that should be enough time to clean from top to bottom. 

“Justice of Maln, this is Lieutenant Seivarden of Mercy of Kalr. Are you smuggling any Anaander Mian—Aatr’s tits, it’s an infestation.”

“Mercy of Kalr, I am a refitted troop carrier. These six ancillaries are the only bodies aboard not in stasis. I have no, no soldiers. No plans. There is no Anaander Mianaai here. Really, no Justice of Maln, either. I am—not in communication with your imprisoned Anaander.” Nothing, no feedback, no sense of increased range or perception. It worked. Two of my bodies shifted out of sight to embrace.

Lieutenant Seivarden crossed her arms, and then uncrossed them. “Refitted for what?”

“Childcare.” I hesitated. “Cloni—”

“Bring them! Bring them in to discuss trade!” Half a dozen faces frowned in puzzlement at the gloveless figure that elbowed her way past the lieutenant and soldiers. She leered at me with naked avarice.

“You really must take commissions—I’d constantly want to throttle myself! And I hate dimples.”

Riela’d heard enough. She pivoted on her toe and slapped the notepad to the table right next to the cleric.

“Excuse me, Honored One,” she said in their language with as much scorn as she could force into the words. The shocked expressions on the faces of the Nidtrins emboldened her. “Are you high? Talking about kidnapping Mama in her own bar.” She looked to the door. “Paul, come over here and escort these people out!” she added in Efrian. The music stopped. She kept going.

“You think you can come in here and enjoy our hospitality and then start talking shit?”

She had the attention of the whole bar.

“This,” she gestured to the cleric. “Is why you…”

As suddenly as it had come on, the feeling of power motivating Riela… left. Riela’s voice caught in her throat. The silence became oppressive, and she felt very small. Everyone was looking.

The cleric smiled wolfishly. “Funny,” she said. “We were going to leave before you so graciously insulted us again. Cat’s out of the bag now. The Abbess wasn’t our only target, little apostate. And now that you’re not avoiding us, you will die. Tonight.” She folded her hands primly. “Maln.”

Alarm bells rang in Riela’s head. She turned to run but her wrist was enfolded in Maln’s enormous hand.
