I know the trippy & bizarre dreamlike storytelling of natural born killers doesn’t work for everyone but to me it’s genius. the scene when the words “too much tv” are projected across Mickey & Mallory’s chests says so much. this is right before Mallory has a series of real flashbacks to the hell her life was before Mickey whisks her away - including screaming at her son & being horrible herself, something she never acknowledges only ever wanting to see herself as a sweet & beautiful Angel. Before Mallory could only picture her old life as a sit com - a parody of American nuclear families. Her father’s insinuated sexual assault & the reveal that her brother is actually her son are accompanied by laugh tracks. Mickey’s kindness is accompanied by “aww” sounds. There is nothing real about it. Everyone is overacting & her son just smiles after everything goes down. But later as Mallory begins to wake up to the horror of what she’s done - killing her parents, abusing her son, killing so many innocent people - she attacks Mickey & blames him. Not that she’s wrong. He’s a violent possessive asshole who gleefully just killed the only people who’ve shown them kindness & she’s rightfully freaking out but she’s still not taking ownership. Just. Mallory as an unreliable narrator is soooo well done. To me. She’s never fully living in reality but you can piece together what the truth is if you pay attention. It’s such a unique & smart storytelling method I looove unreliable narrators I love critique of society & popular media through the lens a character views the world through
