Shockingly, no bingo. I don't think the fandom is all that mean to Rena? Maybe I've just been hiding in the tumblr side for too long, who knows?

But if I hadn't made it obvious by now in the last like, three years?, I love Rena, my favorite Magireco character. I've got a soft spot for well-written tsunderes it'd seem. (I said well-written, ya hear me?) Which Rena is. Yes. I am very good at articulating thoughts.

Amazing site I just discovered that archives girls' games from the 2000s

They've archived games from Barbie, Polly Pocket, Monster High, My Scene... the list goes on and on! It's overwhelming how much they have!! I think they've archived nearly every game for every category they have. And the best thing is, it's all online and you don't need Flash!

This is so fucking funny, apparently “war bad” is liberal propaganda now??? Yes, war IS bad you fucking dipshit.

All Quiet on the Western Front (the original book) was written by a German WWI veteran who was determined to show just how utterly horrifying, disgusting, and senseless the war- and by extension all war- was. The book and its adaptations take great pains to portray the suffering endured by the common soldiers on both sides, who didn't even really want to fight but were manipulated/forced into it by those in power. The book was even banned in Nazi Germany and the author had to flee the country because the Nazis believed the book was “anti-German” and would hamper their war efforts by showing the German people the real horrors of war.

So in some ways I guess history is repeating itself, more right-wing idiots are hating on this brilliant piece of anti-war media 🙄

Who is your favorite MR arc 2 character? Who is your least favorite so far?

I don’t know much about Arc 2 thanks to incomplete or nonexistent translations, sadly, but I can at least go off designs and what little info there is.

So far, I really like all the Adjustors/Coordinators of Pure Care - Sudachi Sawa (meh design, but good backstory), Yozuru Sasame (great design, great backstory), and their leader Livia Medeiros (great design, bonus points for being non-Japanese and dark-skinned, but sadly we don’t know her backstory yet. Or at least, nobody’s fucking posted it anywhere yet). I just think the idea of Coordinators is really cool, and the fact all the ones we know of are designed to look like magicians and their assistants is a nice motif.

(Also, fun fact: Livia’s surname Medeiros comes from a criminal who was executed in a town called braintree, which is where her Doppel’s design comes from. It’s a brain tree.)

I kind of adore Yukika Nanase’s design (and her Doppel’s, too). The fact she was designed by the artist of Tart Magica explains why, that has some sweet designs in it, and I enjoy the thought behind her Soul Gem’s design.

Rui Mizuki, like Ashley Taylor, kinda stole my heart. She’s such an interesting case, a Chuunibyou who has the (for lack of a kinder word) delusion she’s the reincarnation of an ancient lord, in a world where magic and monsters actually exist. Her design’s strange, but I really like it. And she has a soft spot for cats, which is so cute! Plus, instead of having her Doppel focused on her being “delusional”, it actually plays into her beliefs in how fucking bad-ass and goth it is!

As for my least favorite characters of Arc 2...

Well, Ao Kasane is up there. The little I know of her story is fine, but her design is just... so much skin! So little fabric! I don’t know for sure what Ume Aoki’s sexuality is (she’s tended to have the characters she’s designed show a fair amount of skin, and I believe she stated in the first Archive book that she “let (her) lust guide” Iroha’s design with regards to her sheer midriff.

Tsumugi Wakana’s pretty meh. Her design seems too conventionally Sailor Moon-y and not very relavent to her food theme except in the vaguest sense that she kinda sorta looks like a chef or something. I’m not quite sure why Manaka Kurumi was given a sort of “perfect match” character (especially when she seemed to already have a friend in Ria Ami). Her existence is just strange to me.

And Jun Kazari... her art style is fine, her Doppel is pretty cool (also, a few of Arc 2′s Doppels seem to be having their designs outsourced to other ppl besides Inu Curry, which is cool imo), but her magical girl design is just... good god, it’s so boring! So NOT magical girl! And again, so much skin (and we don’t know how old she is, as far as I know). C’mon, do better... she looks too normal!

15: how would you have reacted to finding out about the truth of soul gems and witches?

this question gets kind of a two-part answer, because i’m always of two minds about questions like this. do i answer from the perspective of the teenaged me, the one who would have been approached by kyuubey? or do i answer from the perspective of the current me?

... i don’t think the teenaged me would have handled it very well. specifically, in regards to witches — i don’t know if the soul gem thing would have rocked me as much, which is very interesting and probably says a lot about how connected i’ve always felt to my body. dissociation, babey!

but, witches: i was very idealistic then, and really wanted to define myself by certain things, such as how well i checked off all the boxes on the tropes i thought i should be the most like. if you’d say that doesn’t sound very healthy... well. you’d have a point! while i don’t think i was really a “for justice!” type like sayaka, her mindset there, about how there’s a right way to live and holding herself to those standards to the point of hurting herself, really resonates with who i was at that time. i was also a bit like mami, in that part of my self-definition was based on how useful i was to others and how much i could take care of them, but underneath it all, i was a hot mess. i don’t think i would have self-destruct the way mami did, though. it would probably be more like sayaka, sliding down, down, down into self-doubt and recrimination, until i finally became a witch

the current me, though...? the soul gem answer stays the same. i don’t know whether that’s healthy or not, ahaha, but i’ve struggled with dissociation for so long at this point that the idea of my soul not actually being “in” my body wouldn’t throw me too bad. witches...?

... honestly — i think i’d be able to process it. i have the life experience under my belt to look at things very differently. i think i’d be the most upset at the idea that if i hit a low point, and it’s too low, then i won’t come back from it. that’s one of the most unfair things about the magical girl system to me, and i’ll go into it more when i eventually write about the “growing up” theme in the series. but i think i’d end up even more paranoid about when my mental health starts to slide than i already am, ahahaha

9: what do you think of the uwasa?

i think they are fascinating. i love that they managed to pull off introducing a new enemy, a whole new shtick, while keeping it feeling like it genuinely belongs in the setting. sakurako’s event really spoke to my interests specifically, because i’m a HUGE SUCKER for anything sentient with “programming.” robots, clones, AI, whatever — and the uwasa count. i feel like there’s a lot more there that’d be fun to explore! but there’s probably not much room for it in the main story, so it’d have to be in more “side story” style content... or fic

3: who do you think deserved more screen time or better writing?

this question is hard, because there are just too many. (so i’ll probably answer this every time i get it, just with a different girl, lol)

for now, though... i’m gonna stand on my hill and scream CHITOSE YUMA! in magireco, specifically. the entire cast of oriko magica deserves more attention, but yuma, especially, got de-fanged, it feels like. which... is a very strange thing to say about an 11yo who looks like a 7yo

but in the manga, yuma is a legitimate foil for both oriko and kyoko. she wants to be a good girl, because being a good girl means she’ll be loved and taken care of, she has a protective instinct despite being so young and so small, but she��s also a precocious little shit who will throw down with anyone who looks down on her. or annoys her

and she already comes to grips with suicidal ideation vs fear of death. despite being behind in her physical development (and maybe her verbal, too, i don’t really know enough japanese to be able to say, but there’s a distinct difference between how yuma talks versus how riko talks), she’s ahead of her age in mental development. it’s probably the trauma! so it’s probably not a good thing!

but yuma, like felicia, really hits me hard in the “young traumatized person” feels, and she’s written very realistically in the manga. but in magireco, she’s... very one-note. much like how kirika and oriko are written in the game, imo. they stripped out the best parts of this feisty little kid, and it KILLS me

I personally do sorta miss you posting alot but understand losing interest in magia record. You have a really nice personality and i enjoy seeing your opinions and theories and am just wondering if theres another blog to stick with to keep up with you! I have a main blog but I don't really post on it, I just reblog stuff @malignmuffin. I'm prone to deleting everything on it once in a while because that's what I do when I'm anxious apparently. It's a miracle I've never deleted this blog, or the google drive, or any of the youtube channels.

I have an art blog but I'm probably going to private it now (haven't updated it in years) 'cause it has a ton of spoilers on it for my story, woops

You know, on the bright side-- once Magia Record goes down, maybe I can funnel all that money into things like commissions of my girls.

I want to start doing art again and posting little sketches on it, but right now I'm doing a lot of writing. It's been a lot of fun and I feel kind of more human than usual lately, if anything. More like myself.

Anyways, thanks for asking!! It makes me really happy to hear that someone would actually want to hear me talk or have an interest in stuff that I'm working on. ;_;

What magical girl media are you a fan of that you think is underrated?

I think I’m gonna have to go with Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. It seems like it was more popular in the early-mid 2000s (when it first came out) but I barely see anyone mention it anymore. Maybe it’s because it’s not as accessible for anime fans? It never got an official sub or dub in English (although all 7 volumes of the manga were published in English) so the only way you can watch it is by pirating fansubs. Which I personally don’t have a problem with but I think some people do.

I’m not gonna act like Mermaid Melody is a groundbreaking series or that I think everyone needs to watch it, but it’s cute, fun, and engaging. And the music. The music slaps so hard! Here are a few of my favorites that I still listen to to this day:
