Male cardinals are at their reddest now during courting and before the hardships of parenting. You can see them at a distance even in the woods and when they show up in the garden they're by far the brightest color there.

January 2024: The Week Of Snow

You'd be forgiven if you couldn't spot the Cooper's hawk perched on the right side of our Rubbermaid shed:

Just birds in the snow:

It isn't clear in this photo but that is a red-wing blackbird. I've never seen one in our backyard before. As best as I could tell, it had thrown in with a crew of grackles for safety in numbers:

Male cardinals are beginning to look brighter and brighter, the closer we come to spring. Healthy males are newly molted, with bright new feathers.

Soon, pair-bonded males will start mating rituals with their long-term mates, while young, single males will compete to find a life-long companion.

Northern Cardinals are especially monogamous. They are never too far away from each other.

Somehow I capture the most memeable animals at times and I've dubbed male house sparrows and male cardinals "angy boys" because they always look mad. I absolutely love them so not get me wrong they are absolutely adorable and cool to watch! I just thought it was funny I got both in one shot
