Saturday, 17th of June at 17.00, we'll be launching a collection of materials working together under the umbrella name of Atelier, at Indecis Artist Run Space/The Secret Garden. The collection comprises 2 postcards with interviews, an A3 format 8 page comic documenting past and present workshops around the city of Timisoara, a 1/2 A4 leaflet of around 20 pages with research pictures, notes and sequential scribbles, an A3 poster printed on both sides as well as a 7.7/7.7cm Risograph printed booklet by palpabil.ro + assembled by the team of crafty wizards going under the monicker of Fabrik, who also handled the postcard prints.
Here is a link to the tiny 88pg bundle, minus the colorul outburst. The project couldn't have come together without the focus of Ioana Ciolea/Punky, the sound engineering of Waka_x/Felix Petrescu of Makunouchi Bento or the financial support of Centrul de Proiecte, through their nano-grant program funded via Timisoara 2023's Capital of Culture pack. “Reiji, starting from today, Mom will also be the dad of our home.”
“... Whaddya mean?”
When I was still little, I couldn’t understand the words that Mom had suddenly said that day.
If Mom is gonna become Dad… then what’s Dad gonna be?
I have a faint memory of thinking something along those lines.
When I came to understand that Dad wasn’t coming back home anymore, one month had passed since my mom’s statement that she would become Dad.
Dad would often spend a lot of nights away from home, but even then, he had never been away for a month without coming back.
At that moment, little me finally understood what Mom had been trying to say.
Thinking back on it now, if at that time I had acted like a kid who didn’t understand anything, Mom’s attitude towards me might have been a little different.
My life started to change the day I came to the realization that Dad wasn’t coming back.
“Reiji, your responsibilities will start with washing the dishes.”
“... What are ‘responsibilities’?”
“Being in charge of helping. We’ll start by getting you used to the kitchen.”
“Whaaa—? ... By ‘start’ you mean helping? What? Every day from now on?”
It wasn’t as if I hadn’t helped at all up until then.
But it felt like that time was different, so of course, I couldn’t help but be confused.
I would also be forced to give up what free time I had to read the manga I loved so much.
“Of course. Our family precept is ‘Those who do not help shall not eat.’”
Before I realized, a large frame bearing the family precept had been placed in the living room.
“Come on, if you understand then go and learn how to wash the dishes from Big Sis.”
“Whaaat?”
From the back of the house, Big Sis made a loud, displeased remark.
“That’s how it is. It’s his first time washing the dishes at the shop, after all.”
“Guess I have no choice…”
That is to say, Big Sis had been washing the shop’s things for a long time.
“Here, stand on this platform.”
“But…”
“Just do it already!”
Big Sis also taught me how to wash cutlery and other dangerous items, and so, little by little, I grew up to be useful to the Kotobuki household.
I’m very dexterous, if I may say so myself, and in the end, I’m also the only male worker in the family.
Those features started to come into play rapidly.
“Rei-chan, two makunouchi lunch boxes!”
“Cooomin’!”
My aunt, as the cashier, called out to the kitchen from the storefront.
Even though I was only a primary school student, I had already become an indispensable powerhouse for Kotobuki Bento.
When I lowered the karaage into the oil, I’d quickly pack the rice and stuff the side dishes while it was frying.
Naturally, seasoning and preparation were Mom and Big Sis’ jobs, but somehow it got to the point that I would know when the karaage was fried just right.
“Wait, Reiji. How many times have I told you to leave the rice scoop in water after you use it?!”
“Ah, I’m sorry!”
Whenever I was careless, Big Sis’ harsh voice would pierce through me like bullets, but that never discouraged me at all.
After all, “those who do not help shall not eat." Even if I came home from school with a rumbling tummy…
“Aaah~ I’m so hungry~ Mom, what’s for dinner todaaay?”
“Oh, you’ve arrived just in time. I have to leave for a meeting for a bit, so make it yourself, okay?”
“Whaaat?! You’re just gonna neglect your hungry son and leave?!”
“Those who do not help...?”
“... shall not eat, right.”
Thus, I learned to cook pretty well.
And not only that—when I grew a little bigger, that also gave me trouble.
“Oh, Reiji, go buy some rice. Five kilos, okay?”
“Oh, sake too. The usual cooking sake.”
“Oh, sorry Rei-chan, but the soy sauce is running out. Get the big value one, you know the one, right?”
“Mom, Sis, Auntie. Isn’t all of that too heavy to bring at once even for a man?!”
“Awww, it’s okay~ You’ve grown so big, Rei-chan.”
Bam, my part-timer auntie slapped my back with full-force.
Just how are the Kotobuki women so strong?
“Okay, I understand! Well~ if I take my bicycle, it’ll be fine!”
“Also, bring oil please!”
Big Sis, are you a demon?
Thanks to that, cooking, cleaning, and laundry don’t pose a problem for me. But... sometimes I think that I started being called a jack of all trades later on because of the way I was brought up too.
“What a cruel story, don’t you think?”
“Maybe it’s nothing to laugh at, but your family seems like fun.”
Kouhai-chan was listening to my story attentively.
“Same with Saotome Academy—before long, Mom made a second precept. She told me ‘Those who do not make money, shall not eat, so carry out the plan,’ and so I had no choice but to enroll, you see.”
“You have a very strong mother.”
“Yeah. Well, she was doing the role of both parents.”
“It’s your typical matrilineal family. Maybe that’s the reason I’m weak to women….”
“You are… weak?”
Kouhai-chan blinks her eyes rapidly. She looks a bit like a little bird; it’s so cute.
“I’m weak! I can’t say no if a woman asks something of me.”
“As expected, Kotobuki-senpai is so kind.”
“And if a woman said she liked me, I’d do anything for her.”
That’s right, I’d do everything and anything....
If there was a girl who could open the door to my heart.
I mutter that in my mind.

Tsurune Book 3 Chapter 4 puns
had to make a separate post for these because there are too many of them. can you tell how much pain i was in as i was making this
"Creative...": The words creative, attraction (kyuuinroku), and salvation (救い, which can also be read as kyuu-i), also sound like the Japanese words for nine and one, hence September 1
Jab-jab (ジャブジャブ) means jab as in boxing, but also the adverb じゃぶじゃぶ which means "vigorously" or "plenty"
Original Japanese: Kouchou-sensei, zekkouchou
Original Japanese: Inu ga kinchou shite doggu, doggu (possibly a pun with the adverb dokudoku which means "gushingly" or "in a steady stream)
Original Japanese: Suki kuu mushi mo tadetade. A play on the idiom 蓼食う虫も好き好き or Tadekuu mushi mo sukizuki (there's no accounting for taste). Fun fact "taderu" is a verb that means "drying the bottom of a ship to prevent insect damage".
Seiya's puns original jp: "Ima nanji? Oyaji" (What time is it? Oyaji; oyaji means old man, but ends with ji which means time); "Ari ga tou arigatou" (Thank you for the ten ants; Ari=ant, tou=ten [ants]); "Irusu nanode hontou wa irussu" (I'm pretending to be out so actually I'm here; irusu=pretending to be out, irussu=i'm here)
Masa-san's pun: Kai de senaka ga kaii no; kaii=itchy
Kyudo puns:
- Kyuudou tte douiu kyougi? Mune ga kyuuto natte, mawari no hito ga doudou tte naru kyougi. Kyuu=squeeze, doudou=dignified, majestic
- Yamagata de yumi hiitara ya magatta. Yamagata (山形) = the city, Yamagata (矢曲がった) = bent arrow
- Aah, maku no uchi bentou shichatta. Maku no uchi=inside the curtain (hanging behind the targets), makunouchi bentou=bento lunch which consists of fish, meat, pickles, eggs and vegetables along with rice and an umeboshi
- hakama wa hakanma (袴ははかんま). Not sure what this means but i feel like hakanma is supposed to sound like the chinese hao kan ma which means "does it look good?"
- Yuu wa nan shi ni kyuudoujou e? Yuu (揖)=Bow (as in bowing after you finish shooting), also sounds like "you"
- Uchiokoshi, umaku ikanakute gekiokoshi. Gekiokoshi (激おこし)=extremely mad
- Boku ga uchiokoshi tara yuu ga mae e. Yuu ga mae e (ユーが前へ)=You go to the front (also sounds like yuugamae)
- Daisan wa daisansha ni mitemoraou. Daisan (大三)=the "two-thirds" draw, daisansha (第三者)=third party
Ya o hanatsu to yugaeru kero (矢を放つとゆがえるケロ) I dunno what this means
ザンッ、シンッ! It's a pun for zanshin. I think those are supposed to be sound effects for a sword?

Hitagi Honeymoon

Shinobu’s desired nasuben is, in its full form, an abbreviation of Nasu Makunouchi Bento, which has an even more specific definition. It requires the use of ingredients from Nasu for everything from meat, vegetables, fruit, rice, and milk; even the plate itself must be made from Nasu lumber. Served on nine plates (a nod to the nine-tailed fox) are nine local dishes, with the total price limited to 1500 yen. There are actually a few more details involved, but unfortunately, I am not the guy from “Oishinbo,”¹ advocating for couples to share the same surname. So, let's leave it at that.
That said, let’s dig in.
After eating our pizza and taking a brief rest, our newlywed party— myself included, having enjoyed a short nap just in case I needed to take over the wheel— packed up the campsite and headed to the restaurant we had reserved.
Shinobu, who had been lurking in my shadow ever since we got caught in the rain at Killing Stone, eventually sluggishly crept out, looking like someone being roused in the dead of night. Now when her vampirism had intensified after drinking my blood the previous night, this comparison was quite fitting.
Since the battle with the nine-tailed fox didn't happen, her blood-sucking turned out to be completely useless in the end.
Regardless, the fact that she got up without oversleeping was commendable.
Commendable—or indicative of an indomitable appetite.
She ate Mr. Donuts, as well as nasuben, and probably would've devoured barbeque and pizza if she had been awake for it. It seems, by those measures, that Oshino Shinobu is nothing more than a healthy young girl, unlike what Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade had been.
As she wobbled by, her golden hair swaying along with her, so much so that it seemed like she was rowing a boat, she devoured her nasuben by instinct alone, while Hitagi watched with a hint of tenderness in her eyes.
Setting aside to what extent she was genuinely leading a brigade in middle school, from that perspective, her dislike for children— or rather, her uneasiness around them— seems to have been overcome. But then again, I wonder about that.
How heartwarming was this heartwarming scene really?
It feels as though the air of innocence masks the ferocity of the vampire… almost like an endangered species that is protected solely because of its “cuteness.”
There's an irritating feeling that while dogs, cats, and maybe bunnies are protected, dire warnings of bees facing extinction fail to hit home… Maybe it would sting more if people were told they wouldn’t be able to eat honey anymore.
But would that tender gaze turn to one of terror— nay, disgust— when they learn what creatures used to be that little girl’s staple diet?
To chalk it up to prejudice, preconception, or some sort of container would be highly inappropriate—though it hadn't been properly confirmed, it’s likely that in one parallel world, Hitagi, and probably Kanbaru, had been killed— possibly even eaten— by a rampaging Shinobu freed from her seal.
Given that this world is connected in some way to the “other,” it's probably correct that humans harbor an inherent wariness towards Shinobu.
Now that I think about it, it was rather symbolic when Hachikuji appeared in adult form on my visit to North Shirahebi Shrine— paying my respects before we left to Nikko Toshogu Shrine for our honeymoon.
In that parallel world, we'd encountered a grown-up Hachikuji who hadn't become a god but a warrior, fighting against the vampire who had destroyed the world.
It's not just because ours is a world where only soccer players can hold hands with elementary school children anymore, but perhaps she manifested herself in that form as a reminder to foolish me— though deciphering such an oracle is nigh impossible.
A long way off.
Normally— that is to say, if I had messed up as normal— this meal would have been the perfect opportunity to execute my original plan. It’s just as well that things didn't turn out that way, but how much better would it have been if they had?
At any rate, the nasuben was great. It was nice to gather around the barbecue with everyone and get a handmade pizza straight from the oven, but I must flatter the restaurant for their meals—they were a cut above.
Even though we had no platter or cutlery.²
Under such impressions, it’s no wonder that I make the absurd misconception that bread was made of, well, bread crumbs.
“The menu seems to be very informative in terms of nutrition. I'll consider exploring this for athletes.”
The difference between Kanbaru, who viewed even food as an opportunity for learning, and me, was like night and day— nevertheless, this marked the last time on our honeymoon that the four of us dined together.
…Ah, no, it may sound like someone's going to die, but rest assured, that's not where this is headed. I know it’s a matter of taste, but it’s getting harder and harder each year to see characters from a continuing drama series die by the second or third installment.
I wish for everyone’s happiness.
Every single one of us, without exception.
And so it was decided, as we stood in a general store near the restaurant, that we would buy large vinyl umbrellas for everyone for the upcoming Nikko Toshogu Shrine—the heavy rain was just too much for our folding umbrellas to handle.
I did say “for everyone,” but actually—
“I'm good without one. I feel sleepier with a full stomach, so I shall rest a little longer.”
Shinobu made this remark which may be age-appropriate for both a child and a senior citizen, and then sunk back into my shadow. So in the end, we only needed three— though it's possible that she just didn't want to sit in the child seat.
Kanbaru also insisted that her raincoat was enough, but I wish she’d let me act like a senior once in a while and at least buy her an umbrella. Honestly, seeing Kanbaru in a raincoat was giving me a bit of a trauma, personally speaking.
The memory refuses to be sugarcoated.
Not just that one…
We made a little detour that wasn't part of our original plan by sneaking a visit to the Toshogu Shrine. Although it wasn't meant to be a substitute for our canceled visit to the two main waterfalls, we had to make our way back to the Utsunomiya area from Nasu highlands anyway, so we ventured into the bustling city streets and purchased the highly-recommended Utsunomiya ham cutlets in place of our missing plans.
Since we'd decided to camp in the glass-covered Senjougahara parking lot come rain or sleet, we needed to secure some takeout for dinner— I'd assumed that we'd find something along the way, but the heavy rain had put a damper on our plans, so I turned to my boss' advice for a backup.
Might as well dutifully entrust myself to my boss.
I’d done my duty completely.
But since we'd come this far, it seemed imprudent to pass up on the rumored Utsunomiya gyoza, which we also purchased as a set for our honeymoon dinner.
Though we couldn't enjoy the meal fresh and piping hot as we didn't have a microwave in the car, the anticipation added a touch of excitement.
Ideally, we would enjoy our meal under the starry sky, but we knew better than to get greedy; well, that is, for anything other than our appetite.

Cooking manga
「身も蓋も、皿もないが」 身も蓋もない means direct/frank, like 率直な in the first line. But the literal meaning is "no containers and no lids". On top of that, 味 can be read as み, so 「ひと味もふた味も（違う）＝totally different」can be read as ひとみもふたみも which sounds very similar to 身も蓋も.

Yesterday, I went to Atami for business. ＋ In the morning, I bought a MAKUNOUCHI BENTO (boxed lunch box) in Shinjuku. It was too hot, crowded, and noisy on the SHINKANSEN on the way there, and I didn't feel like spreading it out on the train, so I ate it on the way back. It was delicious. Authentic MAKUNOUCHI BENTO does not betray you. Unfortunately, there was not enough white rice. I wonder if people these days don't like white rice, or there is not enough of it. Cold rice is delicious. ＋ And "TAI-MESHI" (sea bream rice) from Odawara, bought at Atami station. The "TAI-MESHI" was mentioned in Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood". This has been on my mind for 30 years. Reiko-san criticized (?) the SHINKANSEN and said, "Why don't SHINKANSEN trains have windows that don't open? I used to love to open the window of the train in Odawara and buy "TAI-MESHI"! " "TAI-MESHI" could be the subject of "criticism of the SHINKANSEN. I wondered what kind of BENTO it was. ＋ The result was disappointing. It was not so much that it tasted bad, but rather, what the heck is this? I didn't expect it to be sweet. Did Reiko like this kind of sweet food? Reiko was in her 40s around 1969, so she was born in the 1920s? I guess she was around the same age as her aunt and my own mother. I think my aunts would have been thrilled to eat this. ＋ Anyway, I was tired of going to ATAMI. It's not the place to go on Saturday. Ute Wassermann und Joke Lanz – Half Dead Half Alive - Live In Nickelsdorf (Klanggalerie)

Sound poetry and sound collage duet by German vocalist Ute Wassermann with Swiss turntablist and noise artist Joke Lanz, formerly of Sudden Infant and Schimpfluch groups, recorded live during a performance in Germany in 2019. Ute Wassermann's vocal range is astonishing, from high shrieks to gargling to deep low moans, and she proffers an incredible variety of utterances and noises here, while also complementing her vocals with toy instruments and bird whistles. Joke Lanz plays found vinyl records, special dubplates and sampler—perhaps the bespoke sampling function of a Technics turntable. Some sounds from records are recognizable, like child babble, film music, spoken word, accordion, Japanese shamisen traditional, or even techno, but most of the sampling only plays a fraction of a sound, sometimes reduced to a mere pulp or abstract texture. The duo's music is jumping all over the place in search of new sound combinations, and the album is constantly playful and fun throughout thanks to many unexpected U-turns.
Christian Marclay – Graffiti Composition (Superpang)

This is a new version of Christian Marclay's 1996 Graffiti Composition, a graphic score created from thousands of blank sheet music papers posted in Berlin streets for passers-by to graffiti over. Their anonymous contributions apparently included actual notated music and words as well as any kind of blotches Marclay eventually collected and assembled into a graphic score. Graffiti Composition was premiered in the UK in 2005 by an instrumental ensemble led by Steve Beresford, and then recorded by a New York guitar quintet including Elliott Sharp and Lee Ranaldo in 2006—also available on Bandcamp. This new version is interpreted here by British avant-garde music ensemble Apartment House, and they manage to elevate Graffiti Composition to a gorgeous sound art piece for piano, cello, flute, harp, synthesizer, toy instruments, vocal interjections and noises, all superbly played by ensemble members. While the score itself is a semi-aleatoric assemblage of unconnected abstract parts, it ultimately sounds here like a Fluxus event mixed with classical contemporary music. Apartment House leader Anton Lukoszevieze delivers a great performance on cello, yet he shall also be credited for providing coherence to the original collage work, here delivered as a decent piece of contemporary music in itself, both playful and great fun to listen.
Louis Dufort – Volume (Superpang)

Canadian Louis Dufort, born 1970 in Montréal, is a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music, contemporary instrumental music, as well as compositions combining electronic and acoustic instruments. His music is published by the Empreintes DIGITALes and Pogus labels, among others. Volume is a series of 5 electroacoustic compositions for environmental sound recordings and synthesizer, mingled into dense, homogenous textures with a variety of sound events occuring at all times. Spectacular electroacoustic sound treatments are at work here, with a profusion of radical EQ-ing, algorithmic sound processing effects and stereo positioning, all deliciously ear-tickling, especially on headphones. Unfortunately, both orginal location recordings—rain, stones, stones throwned into water, footsteps—and sound treatments are a tad too traditional and conform to the Empreintes DIGITALes dogma. While the music is cleverly assembled into a coherent whole, the end result is perhaps too polished and lacks diversity and excitement. This is still superb electroacoustic music but more originality and fresh ideas would have been welcomed.

The duo of Felix Petrescu and Valentin Toma from Timișoara, Makunouchi Bento are the first experimental electronic musicians we heard from Romania 20 years ago—before that, us Westerners only knew of the Romanian composers like Iancu Dumitrescu, Ana-Maria Avram or Costin Miereanu. Post-Muzica 34 is a radiophonic sound art piece Makunouchi Bento created for a Romanian radio broadcast in April 2021. It is entirely based on environmental sound recordings from Timișoara, processed and assembled into an aural narrative, a portrait of their hometown. To the unexpected ear, the music might sound entirely electronic, but in fact is largely based on processed field recordings of trains, car engines, car horns, sirens, birds, animals in a zoo, voices, etc. All original sounds being heavily processed, you have to pay attention to recognize some of them. What you can't fail to notice, though, is the great variety of sound effects applied, the weird, fantastic sounds, and the Surrealist atmosphere of the piece, which is also remarkably assembled into a coherent narrative, almost like a hörspiel. My only complain is the lack of stereo use throughout, perhaps because this was an improvised live broadcast and the duo didn't care for stereo then. This petty drawback only adds to the vintage aspect of Post-Muzica 34, which brought to my mind echoes of Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna's "Ritratto di Città" [Portrait of a City], 1955, and even Walter Ruttman's silent movie "Berlin, Symphony of a Great City", 1927, in regard to the narrative form. An ambitious hörspiel, Post-Muzica 34 has that kind of historical-cum-avantgarde approach.

[EDIT: *shows up again after 11 years* Finally added subtitles for convenience! Kodi’s lines, though, should be taken with a grain of salt since I didn’t have a clear translation I could use as reference, unlike Majid and Berenice;;;]
First off, I’m sorry I’ve been kinda inactive these past couple days;;; My Tumblr app was acting up on me (and I don’t really like using my computer for this site) plus my sister decided it would be a fun idea to repaint her room Friday/Saturday (and it was but RIP my arms)
Also, I have some notes when it came to choosing their voices!!
Yes that is Hizen Tadahiro from Touken Ranbu for Majid. It felt a bit weird using him as a voice claim since I’m still kind of attached to that game, but since he sounds irritated most of the time while having a kindaaa deep voice (not too much tho;;; he may be based off of the Cave of Wonders, but;;;) (╯✧▽✧)╯ might as well!

Kodi’s voice clips were taken from the demo reel on the VA’s website!
I had his voice claim’s name saved in my notes app from another OC I never used! And since I was going for a friendly kind of voice (that was also just the right amt of emotional wreck), I decided to reuse it for Kodi!
And Berenice’s voice claim came to me as a half asleep thought at 7 in the morning ( ´ ω ` ) Shinoa Hiiragi from Owari no Seraph is a refined mischievous gremlin which was what I was going for with Berenice
The clips I used can be found in the “Shinoa Cute and Funny Moments” video on Youtube! Since there was particular scene I wanted to use that wasn’t in the other compilations!

Usually, a bento with two different types of fried chicken. Tori-kara is short for “tori karaage” (fried chicken).
Umeboshi = picked ume (Japanes plum). Umeboshi onigiri (rice ball) is one of the cheapest onigiri.
Makunouchi bento = a fancier bento than usual that is also healthier.
