Meet the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum)! The pea aphid is one of the thousands of species of aphids that pester plants. Aphids are like “plant mosquitoes” because they drink the phloem (the nutrient-rich sap) of plants with needle like mouth parts. Although one aphid by herself doesn’t cause much damage, aphids can transmit harmful viruses between plants. Aphids also clone themselves! A lone female aphid can produce hundreds of genetically identical offspring without a mate. Therefore, one aphid in a greenhouse or crop field could be the start of an invasion. In this photo, I am using an eyeshadow brush to pick up live aphids and move them onto plants as part of an experiment to measure the plants’ defence response to aphid infestation.
