👻Spooky💀
They're all out having fun, pretending to be normal teens because what else are they to do after having fought in multiple spirit-world wars? They're still just teenagers to some extent. Except they're also not. Ichigo less than any of them. Someone's taking pictures and suddenly they're all freaking out over the otherworldly glow on Ichigo's eyes.
What the vizards had never bothered to tell him (and he'd never experienced with the arrancar either) was that all hollow eyes reflect light like animals. No matter how human they looked and- well, it seems like Ichigo's got one more thing to hide from his human classmates on top of the fangs and the pointy ears 🫠.
Extra: Ichigo staring in disbelief at yet another inhuman bodily feature he wasn't aware of. =_=
Tumblr media
Ichigo now hides from all cameras, afraid the flash will make him look like more of a freak... too bad his friends are fckn insane and now it's become a game to see who can present more and better "cryptid Ichigo" pictures to the group. 🥴✨

Fair point about the price of the books. D&D can be an expensive hobby.
I don’t mean to be rude here. I’m sorry the wording is clunky. Have you read the PHB? It does provides all the information you need to create an character, from things as small as his/her height to complex elements like his/her religion, occupation, and backstory. The finer details like variants, subraces, and expansions are in the DMG and other source material simply because they were written at different times. For example, the shadar-kai just became a playable race in 5e this year. This information is all accessible online, too. But the PHB is designed with the intent that your DM will guide you with the information he or she has from the DMG, both in character creation and in the game. You’re supposed learn as you go and work collaboratively with your group. That’s not a design flaw. It’s like how video games and books typically won’t give you a huge exposition dump in the first chapter—you learn as the story unfolds. But it absolutely does give you all the information you need to jump into a game.
But I should have asked this first. Why do you think D&D ruined fantasy elves?
I have read the PHB, I just don't think it gives enough information about each races' culture. maybe enough to make them playable, but not enough to create a coherent vision of what those peoples are like. if the DM is supposed to provide that, I've never had any of them do that, which... yeah, that's a different problem. so instead players come up with whatever they like, which isn't a bad thing, but they've all come up with the same vision and it's lead to exactly what I was complaining about in the first place: elves being humans with pointy ears and extra special eyes
as for the information being available online - the hard part about that is, unless you already know what you're looking for, it can be difficult to discern which information is official and which is homebrewed. I understand that supplemental material is the stuff that wotc released later as they created more lore, but imo if it's supplemental, it shouldn't really be required. if that kind of stuff isn't accepted from video game devs, why do we accept it for ttrpgs?
I can't decide whether I believe "ruining" elves was intentional or not. wotc made their material less accessible by raising the price and increasing the number of material, but also strove to make their game more accessible to a wider audience. I suppose the latter negates the former for most people. regardless, making a material more ideologically accessible necessarily waters it down. fact of the matter is elves in fantasy media were inspired by Tolkien's elves, who were inspired by Christian angels. these elves are much more serious than the "elves" that players create today. that's not to say they don't have a sense of humor, but their long life, desire to preserve beautiful things in the world, and inherent connection with otherworldly magic creates a certain playstyle that is really not very accessible to a modern audience who kind of just want to play pretend family therapy. encouraging a d&d culture that mostly homebrews the entire game and reduces elves to humans with pointy ears and extra special eyes (and often a much shorter lifespan) so anyone can play them is much more profitable. other media will see the profitability and inoffensive "accessibility" of less special humanoid races and copy suit, as we have seen

on sj/m’s Pinterest on her CC board she posted a picture of a white blonde girl with a big ass crown on her head looking off into the distance and I just fucking know she’s gonna have a new Super Special Powerful and Tough main character who is Not Like Other Girls and Everybody Loves Her even thought she is Deeply Damaged and goes through Peril And Hardship only to Fight Through It with the help of her Super Diverse Teammates and 1 Extremely Hot Male who Loves Only Her Unconditionally Babe :)
IM SORRY IM BACK BUT LIKE IN CC SHES GONNA BE STEALING FROM THE FUCKING BIBLE AND MAKING EVERYONE A FUCKING ANGEL/ASSASSIN/QUEEN/SHAPESHIFTER/FUCKINGALLPOWERFULGODDESS OR SMTHN AS A CHRISTIAN IM LITERALLY SICKENED WHY CANT SHE JUST MAKE HER OWN GODDAMN CHARACTERS FOR ONCE WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO STEAL AND COPY AND PASTE EVERYONE IM ENRAGED
“I can’t wait to introduce readers to Bryce, its heroine, who I think would be very good friends with Aelin and Feyre. The world of Crescent City is more modern than those in my previous series (basically, if the Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass worlds had modern-day technology), but it’s still chock full of magic, brooding warrior-types, and mysterious and deadly creatures.” SHE WILLINGLY CHOSE TO DESCRIBE IT AS THIS KMS IT’S EXACTLY LIKE EVERY SINGLE OTHER BOOK SHE’S WRITTEN
Heyo! So I went and scrolled back through the CCity board and I think this is the pic you’re talking about:

Which is weird and ironic because this looks like it should be Alien. Like it fits into T0G’s aesthetic perfectly because SJ/M has no concept of cohesive worldbuilding or originality. But yes, you’re so right about SJ/M writing Bruce into yet another Perfect And Beloved Female ProtagonistTM. I’m already predicting that Ron and Fury are going to be her sidekicks, possibly Juniper as well (but I think there’s a very good chance Juniper will either be her rival or the fridged best-friend). I also see Potluck being a potential point in a love-triangle, which is absolutely pointless because SJ/M has no grasp of how to create convincing romantic tension. Also I hate love triangles on principle.
As for stealing from the Bible, I kind of have mixed opinions on this. Mess is apparently Jewish, which means she has a claim to Biblical mythology and it can’t really be considered appropriation. Add to that the fact that modern Christianity is built on a foundation of imperialism, and you end up with this huge body of mythology that in a way demands that people make references to or base stories on it. Lots of good stories have Christian mythology worked into them, in the same way that a lot of stories reference Greek and Roman mythology. SJ/M’s problem is that she does it badly. She’s using the fact that angel/demon stories have a built-in body of common knowledge and lots of rich imagery associated with them to avoid having to do the work of building the aesthetics and the mythos herself. That’s why her fae fall so flat--for fae to be interesting, they need to be inhuman, whimsical, sinister, haunting--and SJ/M fails in every regard. It’s not that she isn’t capable. There’s a few bits where she describes the lesser fae and they are convincingly otherworldly. But the high fae aren’t even elves. They’re literally just immortal humans with pointy ears and raging perma-boners.
And yes, I think SJ/M is running out of ideas, not that she had that many to begin with. You can see how quickly her work deteriorates as a series progresses. Also “still chock full of magic” my ass. The magic in her books is so forced and nonsensical that they’d be far better off if she just removed it completely, especially T0G. There’s not a single instance of magic that I can think of that is actually important or necessary. Even the wyrdkeys, which are in theory central to the plot, are kind of pointless. Like, orphaned princess raised as an assassin who finds her goal shifting from securing her personal freedom to liberating her people and others suffering beneath imperial rule--that’s a perfectly decent premise all on its own, if a bit generic. The addition of the magical superplot doesn’t make it any less generic. I kind of went off on a tangent there, but basically SJ/M is a lazy and unoriginal writer who likes to paint herself as some kind of virtuoso.

why i like altean!shiro:
it explains why haggar took such an interest in him even before she gave him the weaponized arm
cool parallels between haggar making the clones to be harvested/used somehow, and lotor harvesting the quintessence of the alteans in the colony (which were revealed right after each other)
more cool parallels about how the only paladins we’ve seen do the eye glow beyond shiro are both altean
some of allura’s alchemy is similar to what shiro’s done with voltron too (powering it up, eye glow, etc.)
gives background on shiro’s family, which we still know nothing in canon about
explains that shiro could have been the one to make the wormhole that brought the paladins + blue lion to the castle in the first place, as the team to looks to him for direction as their leader, but also like he holds the answer
doesn’t change that all of shiro’s choices and accomplishments are his that he earned and fought for; it just illuminates some of them with a possibly deeper in-canon understanding
it can exist in fanon (and/or in canon) and also not exist in fanon, and both are okay
more cool parallels between shiro and keith as narrative foils to zarkon and alfor (mostly bc of red + black paladin, fight on a collapsing structure to death/near-death, etc.)
it’s a nice aesthetic
allura can appreciate his new pointy ears and share her culture with someone who won’t break her heart / horribly betray her
i think it would be super cool if shiro’s backstory related to the druids somehow, mostly bc he’s been connected to them from the start of the show, and i really, really wanna know more about them
i think shiro’s home is in space, wherever that may lead him
why i’m also fine with altean!shiro not being canon
i can enjoy it in fanon
i can enjoy seeing what shiro’s earth background and family is like
it might be shiro being human that drew haggar’s interest (or both, or neither, etc.)
we can learn about the druids in other ways
certain narrative parallels have already been drawn and can already deeply exist without it
allura can learn to love shiro’s dorky human ears
shiro is a magical space boy no matter who his parents are. have you seen him smile?? magical
i’m a cool bean and down with anything so long as my boy is loved and gets development
it doesn’t matter where shiro comes from; i Love him regardless
why it’s okay to not like altean!shiro
you don’t like the idea of shiro having an otherworldly heritage
you like that his achievements were done without magic because you see it as ‘extra’ help, even if he still had to find it from within, etc.
you dislike how sacred alteans exist and are determined by birth in voltron canon, and don’t want shiro to belong to either the out or the in group
you like ordinary-born people as your heroes > half-aliens or birthright inherited abilities
it’s not your cup of tea for whatever reason
seriously shallura fam. we got possible doomsday arriving in less then a week and we choose now to divide ourselves after everything we’ve been through? i don’t think so. just accept that certain ppl like certain theories (or cups of tea) and let bygones be bygones. we need each other more than ever
