Day 44-50
No.
She paced back and forth, as she so often did when her Master was away for too long.
"What if something happened to her?"
The woman in black beside her make a hushing gesture.
"She'll be fine. It's just a quick check-in, nothing more."
"It's been fifty days, Kagu-tsuchi."
The Shinto god of fire sighed, slightly rolling her eyes.
"You really think there's anything out there that can really hurt her? Besides... Kagetora's with her."
Suddenly, there was a flash. A resounding sound. The room went white as all anyone could hear now was an echoing ring.
When things finally settled... there stood Kagetora, alongside her master.
The Final Beast of Humanity.
Reincarnation of Mahākāla.
The Hero of Chaldea—
"Ritsuka!!!!!"
A passionate tackle hug nearly brought the Master down to the floor, but she held her ground.
As if on instinct alone, her arms rose up and wrapped around her #1 Servant to reciprocate.
Slowly, she breathed in. And she spoke.
"Hey, Jeanne."
"How was it? Did anything happen to you? Did they hurt you!?"
The Avenger's eyes began to glow with infernal rage. Ritsuka's hand reached up and began to gently stroke the back of her head, calming her slightly.
"I'm not hurt, Jeanne. I didn't even dig that deep. I just..." Ritsuka broke eye contact for a moment. "...I just wanted to see how everyone was doing. That's all."
"And? How were they?"
Ritsuka took a deep breath in.
"...Happy, I think. I dunno. I tried to be sneaky about it, but I think a couple of 'em recognized me. Said they were happy to see me again, but—"
The door suddenly slid open. As soon as Jeanne saw who it was, she immediately let Ritsuka go and stepped aside...
...as someone else tackle hugged her Master just as she did.
Ritsuka gently giggled. "Heya, Kouhai. You still holding the walls of the City?"
"Senpai...!" Mash giggled back. "I keep telling you, that's a group effort!"
A third figure approached, a cloak faintly billowing in non-existent wind, and a long rifle in her hands.
"Things've been a little wild since you dipped. But... all in all, I think we managed." Artoria Alter nodded as she spoke. "Good to have you back, Rits."
Ritsuka nodded back. Their tackle hug would have to wait for closed doors.
As the four continued to catch up, however... Kagetora pulled Kagu-tsuchi aside.
"Any sign of it?"
"Nope. Not at all."
"So what's the part she's not telling us?"
"I don't... think there is one."
"Really."
"Yeah." Kagetora looked back at Ritsuka. "It's a little bittersweet, but... I think she really is just happy to see that everyone else is okay."
"...So that's it, then? We can move on, now?"
"I'd give it a little more time. Make sure to tie up any loose ends... or at least the ones we can." Kagetora's eyes continued to stare. "Make sure there's nothing left to wonder. Then... yeah. Maybe we can finally put all of this to rest."
So.
Yet another figure appeared, rising from the floor, flickering and shifting like a hologram.
An dark emerald suit, inlaid with gold, peppered with random accessories that looked vaguely... Greco-Roman.
Cherry-red hair tinged with streaks of technicolor.
A comically large, poofy, sky-blue bow adorning a long ponytail.
Eyes like a nebula. A smile like a crack in spacetime—
"Don't you think that's kind of overdoing it, hun?"
...Aya sighed.
"Just thought you'd be excited to see me."
"When am I ever?"
"Ha ha." Aya shifted closer. "Y'know, you could at least warn a girl before disappearing for a month and a half."
"Didn't think you'd care."
"Oh, when don't I, Stardust?" Aya giggled before planting a quick kiss on Ritsuka's cheek. "So... did they miss you?"
"That's none of your business."
"Oh, come on!!" Aya pouted. "They were my friends, too... weren't they?"
"Quit trying to stir shit." Jeanne rolled her eyes.
"It's a genuine question!! Seriously, I should have gone with you—"
"We agreed that would've been a bad idea." Kagu-tsuchi cut in. "Now, come on. I'm sure Starlight's exhausted after everything. Let her rest, you can all pounce on her again later."
Aya continued to whine. But, everyone begrudgingly stepped back to give Ritsuka space. Except Kagu-tsuchi. She got closer.
"...Thanks, Yume."
"Oh, I just wanted you to myself for a bit. Can we talk?"
—————
The balcony outside the rec room.
A simulated cliffside overlooking the sea.
A constant ocean breeze under an eternal twilight.
Ritsuka leaned against the railing, staring off into the horizon. Kagu-tsuchi leaned as well, albeit with her back turned to the forever-fading light.
"...You think this is gonna be the last time?"
"I don't know."
The two remained silent for a moment. Only the wind and the waves below were proof that time still flowed.
"...You never answered Aya's question."
"I never had an answer."
"Then why do you still think—"
"Kagu-tsuchi."
Ritsuka's eyes closed.
"...What... is this... about?"
Kagu-tsuchi sighed.
"...We're just... tired, Starlight. All of us."
"Of my inability to move on?"
"Of your— ...yeah. That."
"I understand." Ritsuka's eyes opened. "I still remember what Benzaiten told me."
"Oh, good, 'cause I wasn't there."
"...You're right, Yume." Ritsuka sighed. "Maybe... Maybe this should be the last time. Maybe... Maybe it will be."
Another silence.
"...Um... I wasn't kidding, Starlight. I wasn't there. The hell did she tell you?"
To let go.
...Yeah, that sounds pretty on-brand for her.
...
...so.
You think you're gonna try for real this time?
I've been trying for real every time.
Fair, fair. Still. You think this is it?
I've lost count of how many times I've said this is it.
Fuck's sake, Starlight, how long is this gonna go on?
...
...my name.
...Huh?
I have a name, Yume.
Use it.
...
...Daikokuten?
......Mahākāla?
...............Lord Ouroboros?
...
...
...Fine.
How long is this gonna go on...
...Carina?

Hi, I just read the ask about LO Leuce and how RS mixes Greek and Roman myths with no context. Personally, I don’t really find it wrong to mix different myths together in fiction and it may be because in Chinese literature, elements of Taoism and Buddhism are often mixed together (think Journey to the West). I was wondering why some readers of LO find it wrong for RS to mix elements of different pantheons together.
Hi! 😁 The case of ancient Greek and Italian religion is not the same as Taoism and Buddhism for us. They are centuries apart with differences in stories and cultural approaches. I am not saying that they are day and night and I don't deny any similarities, but just because two things are similar it doesn't mean that they are the same thing.
Oh! Edit cause I forgot to add a similar ask I got, and I wanted to combine them! @hotpocket-fucker here’s your combined answer, too!
Tumblr media
The Italians* added the Greek gods to their pantheon nearly a thousand years later. But not only did they approach the gods differently (and with some good amount of imperialism :P ) but also made it their own separate religion, while Greeks had their own set of stories. I mean, many Greek stories bled into the Italian religion, but the Italian religion recorded new stories and also ignored many Greek ones. That means that centuries of Greek tradition and stories didn't make it into the Italian equivalent. The Italians at the time took gods from many pantheons to establish them as their own and show dominance over the peoples conquered by Rome.
Sure, it's not the worst thing in the world if a character who is a god has adventures inspired by different incidents, and I am not saying that one can't do it. But this lumping of Greek and Italian cultures is not very... intersectional. Our history, culture, and religions have been similar at times, yes but because we are neighbors. Being neighbors makes us similar but two distinct people. Greeks don't say "this is the temple of Zeus or Jupiter", it's just "Zeus" because Jupiter and his stories (even if some are similar), are of no canonical interest to the local religion. We are always careful when we pull sources, and mention it when a later addition to the Italian religion was made by another Roman, because we give importance to the fact that it was 1.000 years later than the beginning of the Hellenic religion.
One should at least recognize that just because the Italians said that Hades did one thing, it doesn't mean that the Greeks believe the same story is true, and that these stories were recorded by different nations with different cultures and in very different times. The differences are notable so the Roman gods are more like equivalents, not the exact same gods going through different "adventures" because different ethnicities wrote that they did different things.
An example would be Durga and Kali within India, and they even have many similar stories and many similar festivals. But their nature and presentation is different. Hindus don't like it when others confuse Durga and Kali. Similarly, the Aphrodite of ancient Cyprus is not the Aphrodite of ancient Greece. And in Buddhism, I am not sure if people would like to hear "Mahākāla is basically Shiva, so we can write that Mahākāla cursed his wife to be born a fisherwoman because he was annoyed she didn't pay attention to his teachings." (Derived of a story of Shiva and Parvati). Many more equivalents of Indian deities are included in Buddhism but I do get the impression that, although they reside over the same domains, they are not considered interchangeable.
Additionally, you are probably familiar with the god of Death, Yama and how he is presented differently in different cultures. The "Yama" in each depiction has a different presentation, different duties, and different powers. If you ask people of these regions and countries to tell you who is Yama to them, you might take a different answer. For context:
Yama, mid-17th century, Tibet:
Tumblr media
Japan. Statue of Yama (Enma) at Nariai-ji
Tumblr media
Hindu Yama:
Tumblr media
Of course, not one interaction between two and three cultures can be exactly compared to another similar interaction, but I hope I gave a general impression of the situation.
*I don't say "Romans" bc all their subjects were Romans, including the Greeks and I think it's a proper term since the region is the Italian peninsula - but Italians correct me if I am wrong.h

Mahakala (Sanskrit: Mahākāla) is a Dharmapala ("protector of Dharma") in Vajrayana Buddhism (Tibetan, Nepalese Newar, Chinese, Japanese Shingon traditions and related). In Chinese and Japanese Buddhism tradition is known as Daheitian or Daikokuten (大黒天).
Mahakala is a category of Tantric Buddhist deity. His primary function is as a protector (Dharmapala) and specifically the primary Wisdom Protector of Tantric Buddhism - Vajrayana. There are dozens of different variations and forms of Mahakala. He is typically in wrathful appearance following the Indian model of a Raksha demon. In most occurrences and uses of Mahakala, he is paired with a meditational deity such as Panjarnata Mahakala and Shri Hevajra, Chaturbhuja Mahakala and Chakrasamvara, Chaturmukha Mahakala and Guhyasamaja. In most cases Mahakala is an emanation, or wrathful aspect, of the principal meditational deity that he is associated with. For instance Panjarnata Mahakala is the most wrathful emanation, or form, of Hevajra. In other situations Mahakala might be a wrathful emanation of Vajradhara or Akshobhya Buddha. Aside from the individual Anuttarayoga Tantras that teach various forms of Mahakala, the principal texts are the Twenty-five and Fifty Chapter Mahakala Tantra.
In one specific case, Shadbhuja Mahakala, Avalokiteshvara takes on the form of Mahakala. Therefore, it can be said that the Shadbhuja form, with one face and six hands, arising from the Eight Chapter Mahakala Tantra, is a wrathful Avalokiteshvara.

why-why is nasu trying to merge japanese gods with hindu gods, those are two very different cultures???
who honestly even knows. Like there is a little overlap bc of the Buddhist element-buddishm was formed in India alongside hindusim (which was already established) and borrowed and changed a lot of elements while forming its core beliefs, and it then traveled over to Japan and was then changed further when it met the native gods so some hindu deities which had been adapted and renamed into Buddhism were further altered into Japan but
They already exist in japan? Like the shiva thing I mentioned earlier-it’s complicated and I’m sure there’s other derivatives of him I’m missing, but the line KIND of goes Shiva (Hindu)-> Mahākāla (his avatar)(translates to great+ darkness/blackness)-> Dàhēi (Buddhism, a translation of his avatar’s name according to Chinese values) -> Japan has a Shinto god called Ōkuninushi which phonetically can be pronounced Daikokunushi, which sounds like the Japanese phonetic reading of Dàhēi, so Dàhēi-> Daikoku (Japan)
So BASICALLY Shiva-> Dàhēi-> Ōkuninushi-> Daikoku, in which only Ōkuninushi was his own separate god who was folded into the others due primarily to the fact their names sounded similar. All of these gods are radically different from each other but they DO carry a shared history of being associated with each other in Japan.
So if nasu wanted to synchronize a Japanese Shinto god with a Hindu god, he COULD play with Shiva and Ōkuninushi as they historically did get combined into another, new god (Daikoku.) These religions do have connections to each other, the problem is that the actual connections that already exist are being passed over bc…they aren’t as cool? Or something? I actually don’t know why.

Shiva carved from oak Shiva is one of the principal deities of Hinduism. God Shiva is said to be the controller of time itself and has responsibility of carrying out the process of destruction at the end of creation. In Sanskrit language, kāla means time. He is also called Mahākāla as all the three times, past, present and future lie within him and are from him. He is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism. DP HC - Clockwork
I don’t see Clockwork as a god.
I see him more as a manifestation of time’s will birthed when people first began to perceive time (people meaning sentient life). His existence was initially, chaotically influenced by people’s concept of it before it gained it’s own sense of self. As such, he’s not necessarily a ghost in the literal sense, so much as a spiritual manifestation given ectoplasmic form.
That being said, just because he isn’t a god, doesn’t stop people from seeing him as one.
Depending on what society he appears in & who he appears in front of, his form changes to accommodate the culture while still keeping his basic color template & body/facial structure. (Man likes his purple.) Like, in Egypt, he appears as Thoth. In Greece, he appears as Aeon or Chronus (though, he tries to avoid going back there as that particular phase of his existence was an unpleasant one) or Kairos. In Japan, he’s Daikoku. In India, he’s Mahākāla.
Since, the entire show takes place in America, being founded by immigrants of several nations, he appears as the 3 phases of human life & is heavily influenced by the concept of Father Time & Baby New Year. (Which, itself, might've been inspired by the 3 Greek gods of time; Aion, Chronos, & Kairos. Who knows?)
When he's in his Clocktower, Long Now, he's able to choose which of his many forms he takes. He doesn't even really need to keep changing ages, but he's a dramatic little bitch whose commited to the bit.
The staff he holds was used early in his existence to help him control his powers. Like training wheels. Now-a-days, it's little more than a prop, but Clockwork likes the theatrics & is something of a creature of habit. Also, it keeps the Observants quiet, thinking they can still control him like he's still unstable & dependant on their organization. Which is insulting considering he's actually far older than any of them have ever been.
If I were absolutely forced to give him a classification, I'd say he was the first zeitgeist, a.k.a. time spirit. One so powerful that he maintains the whole of time rather than a single time period or era like is typical with other zeitgeists.

"At the dissolution of things, it is Kāla [Time] Who will devour all, and by reason of this He is called Mahākāla [an epithet of Lord Shiva], and since Thou devourest Mahākāla Himself, it is Thou who art the Supreme Primordial Kālika. Because Thou devourest Kāla, Thou art Kāli, the original form of all things, and because Thou art the Origin of and devourest all things Thou art called the Adya [the Primordial One]. Re-assuming after Dissolution Thine own form, dark and formless, Thou alone remainest as One ineffable and inconceivable. Though having a form, yet art Thou formless; though Thyself without beginning, multiform by the power of Maya, Thou art the Beginning of all, Creatrix, Protectress, and Destructress that Thou art." - Mahanirvana Tantra...
