It is native to Japan. It has the largest flowers and leaves of any plant in our country. The height of the tree is 20 to 30 meters, the diameter of the flower is 15 to 20 centimeters and the length of the leaf is 30 to 40 centimeters.

朴 is said to be a change from the word 包[Hō](To wrap.) It was so named because food was wrapped in its leaves in the old days. Even today, there is a local dish called 朴葉味噌[Hooba miso], which is cooked on this leaf. 葉[-ba|Ha] means leaf and 味噌[Miso] means soybean paste. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Houbamiso.jpg

This is an aggregate fruit and is about the size of 15 centimeters or less. When it ripens and turns red, and the outer skin is cracked by drying, many vermilion seeds emerge from within.

The Annonaceae are a family, the custard apple family, of flowering plants consisting of trees, shrubs, or rarely lianas. With 108 accepted genera and about 2400 known species, it is the largest family in the Magnoliales. Several genera produce edible fruit, most notably Annona, Anonidium, Asimina, Rollinia, and Uvaria. Its type genus is Annona. The family is concentrated in the tropics, with few species found in temperate regions. About 900 species are Neotropical, 450 are Afrotropical, and the other species Indomalayan.

Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.

Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. To avoid damage from pollinating beetles, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are extremely tough.Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae date to 95 million years ago. Another aspect of Magnolia considered to represent an ancestral state is that the flower bud is enclosed in a bract rather than in sepals; the perianth parts are undifferentiated and called tepals rather than distinct sepals and petals. Magnolia shares the tepal characteristic with several other flowering plants near the base of the flowering plant lineage such as Amborella and Nymphaea (as well as with many more recently derived plants such as Lilium). The natural range of Magnolia species is a disjunct distribution, with a main centre in east and southeast Asia and a secondary centre in eastern North America, Central America, the West Indies, and some species in South America.

The bark and flower buds of M. officinalis have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine, where they are known as hou po (厚朴). In Japan, kōboku, M. obovata, has been used in a similar manner.
