I don't really remember much about Total War except for two things:
-My fixation on diversified sister foundations to the Magnus Institute started here, and
-...Jon knows Chinese??? Oh no wait hol up it's just funky eye powers such a disappointment

Nesting instinct
Jon: (After reading the entire statement)This is all written in French. I don't speak French.
Total War
Xiaoling: (In Chinese) You speak Chinese? Jon: I don't, why? Also Jon: If only I spoke Mandarin or Cantonese...
This man.... is so clueless sometimes (most of the time)......

mag 105 - total war
i am starting to notice a pattern that slaughter statements are almost always amongst my favourite. especially the ones regarding war and more wide-scale violence. i guess it's really common to get interested in history through war, but i have always been particularly interested by the more, idk, philosophical? side of war
this statement has a lot of themes we've seen before, and perhaps the biggest of them is the desensitization to violence that is brought along with war. both in the moment, but also when looked back upon. the statement just loads on violence upon violence, and it is all too much to go into in any greater detail. the idea the slaughter of thousands of people can be turned into a footnote in a textbook, that the descriptions trying to capture the horrors of it can be turned into dismissed clichés, is in itself horrifying. which is what i suppose marks this one different to other statements regarding desensitization - this one is (at least in my eyes) about how there is just so so much of it that it is impossible to even attempt to truly present all the suffering
honestly, the slaughter barely needs a ritual. is it ever mentioned trying to make one? because it'd be really hard for any avatar to try and organize something that would feed it as much as these large scale wars
moving on to other matters - how do the other institutes work? did jonah magnus start them all? are they also driven by eye avatars? or are the heads of them just normal academics who really liked ghost stories as kids?

MAG 105 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: putting up a new fence
XIAOLING: "Oh, 你说中文?" JON: "I, I don’t, why?" XIAOLING: "… How long did you say you have been Archivist?" JON: "Uh, about two years now." XIAOLING: "Well, Elias made a good choice." Am I the only one you finds it super uncomfortable when people talk like that about(/to) Jon (Elias did that too in MAG 92 and 102). I can't really describe it. It feels dehumanising, like they don't talk to/about him as a person. Also, knowing that Elias does not have good intentions with Jon is probably also adding to it.
Statement from the 1800s. I always have such a hard time with those.
I'm halfway through the statement and I have no idea what's going on. My brain just goes blank.
So basically this Lieutenant was followed by war ghosts?
JON: "Some long confession he left tucked away in a library somewhere, telling me the ancient chant I need to stop the Unknowing from coming to pass?" Well, you could say Gerry's knowledge to stop the Unknowing was among the pages of a book, so it’s library related^^ And that ancient chant will be for something different^^
JON: "Hang on, I think… I think this says 2004. Yes, 1992… 1997… 2004." Hmmm... Did Gertrude read that statement when she was researching the Slaughter ritual?
JON: "I mean, in 2004, yes, but I-I need information about her visit three years ago. Did, did your assistant find anything about that?" XIAOLING: "Yes. There were two accounts that Gertrude took out in 2014." Was one of the two statements MAG 137: Nemesis (like the ship in this statement)? Do we ever find out?

So, last episodes
I still think it’s super neat that Jon just… Understands languages now. Very cool hehe.
Also oh god Elias. And the way he goes from inserting traumatising memories into Melanie’s head to being a polite, smiling asshole again damn.
AND SO JON NOW NEEDS STATEMENTS TO SURVIVE, HUH. So. That’s something. Of course Elias knew, of course he did. This in itself is a massive angst potential. Then his trip to America turned into a murder trip and just afsgjsfshg. At least that woman wasn’t hunting him heh.

Note
I always imagine the woman in the Chinese institute being non-plus hearing Jon speaking and reading Chinese while insisting in not knowing the language (I know that IS not exactly how it went, but still)
Honestly? The pluri-language power IS the BEST beholding power
It’s definitely be a skill I’d like to have.
