Anime spotlight - Mars Red
Beautiful anime with a unique look at vampires and a different setting that I appreciated but also a shame it didn’t quite stick the landing. Its rich theatre influences in both how it styles itself and its dialogue was lovely but it dragged a little and could have been more concise.
The plot is  In the year 1923, a vampire crisis takes Tokyo by storm. Provoked by the illegal trade of "Ascra," an artificial blood source, the population of vampires begins to rapidly increase within the city. Under orders from Lieutenant General Sounosuke Nakajima, the Special Forces Unit 16 gathers vampires within the military to create a new undercover vampire-hunting unit known as Code Zero. Leading the unit is Colonel Yoshinobu Maeda. Responsible for locating the source of the Ascra trade as well as capturing and killing vampires, he is pressured into producing fruitful results amidst the growing criticism that threatens to decommission the unit. To make matters worse, the vampires within the unit are struggling to grasp their newfound powers and identities now that they are no longer human. With the world at odds against them, the members of Code Zero must find a way to curb the crisis or otherwise fall victim to their own demonic natures.
I can imagine this not being for everyone as it does have the tone and dialogue of theatre but I liked how it presented itself and its visuals. There is a good story in hear and good characters. Its like watching a Shakespearean tragedy but also shades of romance and drama which is what it was going for but it drags its feet a bit too much slowing down the pacing and the tenseness of the situation. Still worth a watch especially if vampires are your thing.

So ... with yesterday's episode, Mars Red ended too.
You might have thought: "Wow, what an interesting plot, I'm just curious to know how it will turn out!" or even "I wonder if the guy on duty will survive or if he will die before reaching the end".
But no. My thoughts were quite different, my curiosity was totally absorbed by a single event:
"Will our Kurusu be able to utter his whole opening sentence?"
This poor guy struggles with that phrase since his very first appearance
Tumblr media
Always interrupted and unable to continue the declamation even when alone, lost in the middle of nowhere and without interference from the outside.
-------
Then these two come along too...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LET HIM END THAT DAMN SENTENCE, FOR GOD'S SAKE! ٩(╬ʘ益ʘ╬)۶
Tumblr media
Then here comes the depraved maniac who, at the first attempt and without any effort, placidly pronounces the whole sentence, the final part of which had now become a dream for me to know.
------------
And here we are, finally at the last episode.
I have faith in you Kurusu, I believe in you. I know you can do it. Fight for your sentence, Kurusu.
GO FOR IT, KURUSU!
Tumblr media
(⊙_⊙)
o(〒﹏〒)o
(ಥ﹏ಥ)
...Nothing.
I give up. I'll never know how that damn sentence truly ends.
---------
But then .... I see the light.
After a sudden transformation into Kurusu Super Saiyan, the forces finally recovered, the correct amount of oxygen in the lungs ...
The final declamation begins, loud and proud ...
Tumblr media
And it is finally completed! 😍😍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 ☆*:.。.o(≧▽≦)o.。.:*☆
(*꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ)
I get emotional, I can't believe I've waited FOR 13 EPISODES.
Kurusu himself waits 2 seconds before uttering the fateful occult words, expecting at any moment an alien attack, an earthquake, a meteorite ... anything that can interrupt him.
But instead ... he did it. HE REALLY DID IT.
WATCH THE SATISFACTION ON HIS FACE.
I'M PROUD OF YOU, YOU FOUGHT SO DAMN HARD FOR YOUR IDEALS.
No one will be able to change my mind about the fact that also the authors wanted Kurusu to be happy and that the real purpose of the whole ending was precisely to make this poor seal pup say the sentence u.u
In reality, we have been all scammed and the real plot was just this:
"Kurusu, a tender class A vampire, fights against his insecurities and his inability to carry out his own thoughts. Will our friend be able to declaim the whole introductive sentence of the special vampire unit without being interrupted? "
Try to make me change my mind.

Card: Human Kindness
Characters: Maeda Yoshinobu, Tenmanya Shinnosuke
Summary: Maeda visits Tenman-ya. They talk about how vampires must suffer. Maeda’s thoughts go to...
Tumblr media
Tenman-ya (Night)
Maeda: I’m coming in.
Shinnosuke: Oh, Colonel Maeda. Greetings. What can I do for you this fine day?
Maeda: I have a job request.
Shinnosuke: Thank you for you patronage. Let’s talk it over.
Maeda: Alright... Before we do, can I take a smoke break here for a moment?
Shinnosuke: I’m sorry, but our evening customers are sensitive to smell. Please refrain from lighting up inside the shop.
Maeda: Oh... That’s right. Can’t smoke here, either...
Shinnosuke: Ha.
Maeda: ...What is it?
Shinnosuke: Oh, I’m just realizing that things must be tough for you. Do you need to smoke that much?
Maeda: It’s because I’ve been with Takeuchi at headquarters until just now.
Shinnosuke: Haha... Even you have to be on your guard with him.
Maeda: Basically, I don’t care what he does with Yamagami, but I don’t want him interfering with the guys ranked higher.
Shinnosuke: You don’t care about what happens to Yamagami?
Maeda: Nope... Speaking of, when I’m around him, I smoke like normal.
Shinnosuke: There you go again... You do that on purpose, don’t you? You’re a bad guy, only to try and get a rise out of him.
Maeda: He whines that it messes with his nose, even thought he’s unranked.
Shinnosuke: Even unranked vampires sense of smell is enhanced, apparently.
Maeda: For us humans, that’s something we can only imagine... Hey, are there any vampires who smoke cigarettes?
Shinnosuke: I don’t know... I’ve never met one. It’d require subjecting yourself to a very strong odor. There are those who smoked while they were human, but after they turn, the majority give it up.
Maeda: ... Then I’ll never become a vampire for as long as I live.
Shinnosuke: Not being able to smoke would be torture for you, huh?
Maeda: Having to continue living while being deprived of habits and flavors... They’re a sorry bunch, vampires.
Shinnosuke: Yes... Truly. I guess that’s why so many vampires are looking for a purpose in life. It appears Yatsufusa is searching for one, too.
Maeda: That must take time.
Shinnosuke: Oh, spot on, Colonel. You’re right. To try many things, you must tackle them one by one.
Maeda: Hm. When I first met him, I didn’t think he’d last long. He acted like the dead while he was still alive- in fact, he wanted to die.
Shinnosuke: ...Yes, he did. But... he has changed, too. Everyone around him used to criticize him, so it’s no wonder... But he doesn’t seem to think that way now. He did always like plays, so it’s not as if he had no interests to begin with.
Maeda: Well, for a guy that had a death wish as a human, just finding a reason to live counts as progress.
Shinnosuke: Indeed.
Maeda: A reason to live... huh.
Shinnosuke: What is it?
Maeda: I just remembered something you told me before. For vampires, their reason to live becomes their lifeline.
Shinnosuke: Yes, I did say something like that.
Maeda: It might even be more important to them than the blood they crave. Habits, and having a purpose in life.
Shinnosuke: I believe you’re right. Otherwise, how would one pass eternity? Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl.
Maeda: You’re not wrong. Well, if I couldn’t enjoy smoking or drinking, forget finding a new purpose in life. I’m out. Can’t even eat the things you want to eat... Yeah, that’s rough.
Shinnosuke: Oh, do you like the taste of anything other than cigarettes?
Maeda: ...
Shinnosuke: Actually, come to think of it, Yamagami mentioned he likes tempura.
Maeda: ...I wouldn’t know.
Shinnosuke: Heheh.
Maeda: ...Enough chit-chat. Let’s talk business.
Shinnosuke: Very well. If there’s anything the Tenman-ya can do for you, do it we shall.

shot comp in mars red, ep1
Rewatching ep1 of Mars Red has fucked me up. There's a lot of things I could say, rewatching this episode with all the things I know 9 episodes in, but I want to talk about these two shots. As per the usual, I've only limited cinematography knowledge and most of what I'm saying comes from a background in graphic design and my own experience writing. Spoilers ahead for Misaki and Maeda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Without any context, what do these two shots tell us?
Firstly, the guy in the middle is military, judging from the hat and uniform. Going off the way he's drawn, he looks like an older man, probably middle-aged and experienced in life. The hands near his neck are feminine, bony, and delicate. Probably a woman's.
As for the hands, they're placed around his neck very strangely. One would expect one of two things from shots like these: either the woman is strangling him, or embracing him. She's doing neither. She's not even touching him, and her hands hover near his head in an awkward position.
So what is she doing?
Is she embracing him, or is she strangling him?
This shot tells us that the scene is neither, or perhaps both. Composition-wise, this frames the man's face--that tells us what's important in this shot. Something's happening on his face that is important.
Remember how she's pointedly not touching him? He's pointedly not looking at her.
The hands are positioned in such a way to imply that the woman is shorter than him, and the camera's position implies that it's shooting from her face--looking up into the man's face. But his eyes are staring straight ahead over the camera and, presumably, her head. In the second shot, he's closed his eyes completely. He is not looking at her. Why isn't he looking at her?
Then you look at the dialogue. Even without knowing that the woman is quoting a play, the dialogue is painful. "Thou wert the only man that I have loved." It's a twist on that embrace--she looks as if she's about to cup his face, perhaps, because she's quoting romantic lines at him, but she isn't, and he isn't looking at her.
There is pain in the way the man's expression is so carefully controlled and there is pain in the awkward way her hands are flexed, because these shots tell you she wants to touch him, and he wants to look at her. Why else would her hands be twisted so unnaturally, and why else would he shut his eyes? So there's already a tragic conflict between the two of them. He isn't looking at her, she isn't touching him. Neither of them can bring themselves to as much as they seem to ache for it.
Back in context, the scene is even more painful.
Misaki is a threat. She's the highest level vampire than could be created, she's already injured several of his men, and all this after escaping a prison made to hold her. She is dangerous, and Maeda is only human.
So it becomes even more painful, then, that he cannot bring himself to look at her even though she is dangerous. Even though she is a threat and could kill him easily. Maeda is military and yet he cannot look directly at the threat in front of him.
And despite Misaki being dangerous, she still isn't touching him--there must be some awareness there, despite how her lucidity comes and goes, that touching him might set her off. So as much as she wants to hold him, cup his face in her hands, she can't.
An embrace implies romance. Strangulation implies violence.
There is romance in the way they so desperately want to touch, to look. There is violence in their proximity and the situation they've found themselves in. The dichotomy is painful, and even more so when you consider the double meaning to Misaki's dialogue. A kiss is one thing, but a kiss from a vampire is another thing entirely because of how the infection spreads. And Misaki's lines are about death. She's talking about Jokanaan's death, and she herself is dead, and she is holding herself still for fear she'll bring about Maeda's death, and there is both violence and romance in the way she stops herself from killing him.
And in the context of Salomé?
In the play, Jokanaan swears that Salomé will never kiss his mouth. Distraught by the rejection, she requests he be killed and his head brought to her. She kisses him as if he were still alive.
Ah! I have kissed thy mouth, Jokanaan, I have kissed thy mouth. There was a bitter taste on thy lips. Was it the taste of blood? … But perchance it is the taste of love. … They say that love hath a bitter taste. … But what of that? what of that? I have kissed thy mouth, Jokanaan.
Salomé, effectively, killed Jokanaan.
The dialogue in the play is about the inherent violence of love, and the terrible interplay between desire and death. Misaki knows how the play ends, and in her lucid moments, she knows who she is and who Maeda is. She could have continued playing Salomé until the end, kissing Maeda and killing him that way. She wanted to, she says so in that scene that she wished she could have kissed him, and Maeda probably couldn't have stopped her.
But she doesn't. She loves him too much to let him be Jokanaan, and so she doesn't touch him, she doesn't kiss him, she doesn't bite him even if that's what her instincts are screaming for her to do.
Instead, she steps out into the sunlight, and Maeda watches her die.
As a last detail that was particularly clever, Misaki dies when she is crushed by stage equipment. Salomé dies when she is crushed by shields.
