Ironically, the most eventful day in the careers of Mr. and Mrs. Fenton had nothing to do with ghosts. The two had just returned from the supermarket and were carrying in the groceries, when the shadow in the corner began to speak.
"We need to talk."
"GHOST!"
The couple were on their back before they could draw their weapons.
"You are the foremost experts in the field of ecto-biology," said Batman as if he hadn't just brought down a three hundred pound man and a ninth-degree black-belt before either of them could realize he'd moved, "I have questions regarding your sponsor."
"Sweetie, is the Batman in our living room?" asked Jack.
"I do believe he is," replied Maddie as she stood up and patted the dust off her clothes, "you know, you could have called for an appointment. We'd have made time."
"In the 80's, the two of you had your doctorate studies rescinded due to your studies in what you called "ecto-science"," he stated, ignoring their indignation, "yet you now live in an upper-middle class neighborhood and spend thousands of dollars a year on technology that didn't have a proper proof-of-concept until recently."
"What's your point?" asked Jack.
"Where is the money coming from?"
"If you must know, we have a sponsor," replied Maddie, "after our dean proved to be too small-minded for our research, we were approached by a man who was more open to the possibility of inter-dimensional research."
"He wanted us to study ghosts!" cut in Jack, "He even gave us our very first sample of ectoplasm!"
"That one sample was the backbone of our research for years, until we got our portal running."
"You never asked where he got that sample from?"
"He seemed like a trust-worthy fellow," dismissed Maddie, "all he asks is for copies of our experiments and for ectoplasm from our portal."
"What sort of experiments?"
"Well, at first we needed to verify the psycho-active behavior of the sample," recalled Maddie, "if you give me a second, I have my research around here somewhere."
"You took the sample to several morgues," Batman told them, "the sample's most drastic and extreme behavior occurred when it was placed close to bodies who had a history of violent and anti-social behavior in life."
"Maddie, the League's reading our papers!" Jack giggled excitedly, "But yes, it's how we know that all ghosts are evil ectoplasmic scum!"
"You never questioned the origin of the sample?"
"It was the only sample we had," pointed out Maddie, "but it's properties matched all of our theories."
"The man you spoke with was Ra's al Ghul," he informed them, dropping a folder full of pictures and documents for them to peruse, "thousands of years ago, Ra's found a well of green water that is now known as a Lazarus Pit. Using its power, he has rejuvenated himself time and again to maintain his position as the head of the League of Assassins. After some experimentation, he found the same pits could keep his forces alive, even in death.
"Over time, the League came across a problem that threatened their continued existence. They were consuming the Pit's water faster than it was replenishing itself. After much experimentation, they found a solution. At the moment of death, when the human soul passes over to the Infinite Realms, what you call the Ghost Zone, a small amount of ectoplasm leaks over to our side."
"Wait, you don't mean...?" Maddie trailed off, horror settling in.
"Ra's killed people en masse to replenish his pool," affirmed Batman, "further experimentation revealed that people who died in a state of extreme fear or pain provided more ferocious soldiers. That is where your sample came from.
"In it's neutral state, ectoplasm reacts equally to all emotional ranges. Repeated exposure to emotional extremes will imprint the ectoplasm, causing it to react more strongly to a specific emotional range than to others. The negative emotions of Ra's victims imprinted on the ectoplasm, resulting in your skewed results."
"Wait, how would you know that?" demanded Maddie, "We're the foremost experts on ecto-science and we didn't know that!"
He pulled out a thick folder and slammed it onto the table.
"I had my research peer-reviewed."
"By who?" asked Jack, "We looked all over and couldn't find anyone in the scientific community!"
"You weren't looking in the right place. There is a branch of the Justice League that specializes in the supernatural, ghosts and demons chief among them. They want me to bring you in."
"Really!? Did you hear that Mads! We're being recruited by the Justice League!"
"They want me to arrest you," Batman corrected them, "for illegal poaching of innocent and neutral spirits, particularly after last week's attack on their newest member, Danny Phantom."
"The Ghost Boy!?" roared Jack, "That no-good ectoscum made the League before we did!?"
"I have watched his fights. He takes care to avoid collateral damage and only appears when other ghosts attack, sometimes at great personal cost."
"Look, Mr. Batman," sighed Maddie in a condescending tone, "we've fought the ghost boy for years. He has a history of crime and violence. If you look far enough, you'll find-."
Batman had no time for nonsense.
"The League has already looked into the incidents. All show indications of either coercion or mind control."
"Ghosts are deceitful and conniving-!"
"We have already established that your initial sample skewed your results," he cut Jack off, "this would imply that all of your research and experiments need to be reassessed, including your opinions towards ghosts in general.
"Regarding Ra's al Ghul, you will need to continue working with him. Cutting contact suddenly may put you and your family in danger."
That caught their attention.
"What do we need to do?" asked Jack, all jokes and outrage immediately tossed out the window.
"Keep doing your research with this new information in mind. Your experiments have been applied to the Lazarus Pits, resulting in unstable results. Recent subjects have come out in a mindless rage, while others have shown no effect on their mind, and yet others have had no effect. Ra's is already skeptical of your continued collaboration. If you provide him with research based off this new information, he may decide you are not worth his time or money. When it comes to Ra's, your best option is dismissal to irrelevance. You do not want to make an enemy out of him."
"It's not just that," admitted Maddie, "if we were the only ones being affected, we'd simply let him know we're exploring new horizons outside of ecto-science. The thing is, we have two children, one in college and one near graduation."
He gave them a card. "Call that number. All of their college expenses will be taken care of."
"I... Bruce Wayne?" read out Jack.
"We've collaborated before, he is trustworthy," he reassured them, "the next part is up to you. Will you be scientists, or poachers?"
Their lights flickered, and he was gone.

I love my woman Madeline Fenton so much, I love and hate the way people portray her as the villain, that will kill her own children because of her hatred for ghosts.
Like my girl would change sides the moment she finds out her son is a ghost, yeah she might lock herself up in a room for days or so, i mean who wouldn't, you just found out your son has died and you as his parents were nowhere to be seen, but after that she'll be so supportive about Danny's hero life and would do her best to help her little man. the same goes for Jack.
__
Maddie wanting to help her son and daughter more, she applied at the watchtower as a scientist and a doctor for extra money and a new hobby, she ofcourse got the job, i mean she was very smart and she knew it too.
Maddie kissed her husband goodbye, as she teleported to the watchtower, using her own handmade teleporter gun, which came handy for all times.
green light surrounded her as she disappeared from her home, and appeared in the meeting room, she was called during her day off, and only told her that it was urgent and the scientist's help was needed greatly.
she expected and prepared for every worse scenario that'll she'll meet once she turned her head around, what she didn't expect was to see her son, in his phantom form taunting a certain grouchy boss of hers, it seemed like the sound of her teleporting got everyone's attention including the ghost boy, who stared at her with shock, and stopped his chaos before floating down onto the floor to stand and fidget awkwardly.
"Phantom" Maddie greeted.
"Dr. Fenton" Phantom greeted back with a nervous smile.
"What did you do this time?" Madeline sighed, she loved her baby but sometimes he can be too much.
"Hey! I didn't do anything this time." Phantom said offended "the amount of trust you have of me is so motivating" He dramatically added, which maddie just sighed at.
"Phantom, you know Dr.Fenton?" Batman questioned, his face even more grouchier because of this information that he didn't know
"Ofcourse I do, this wonderful and beautiful woman right here is Madeline Fenton, one of the most smartest woman I know" Phantom proudly stated, while circling the said Doctor.
"Flattery won't make me not tell your dad, that you've joined the Justice league without telling us." Maddie scolded him.
"Im sorry, please don't tell dad, mom"

Danny Phantom keeps me up at night.
His superhero identity has always been upsetting to me. He doesn't maintain one to keep his family safe. He has one to keep himself safe from his family.
The worst part, though, is the idea that he became the very thing his parents capture, experiment on, and regard as incapable of feelings. This was the religion he was raised on. There has to be nights where he lays awake wondering if 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘺 crawled out of the portal, or if he's a just collection of memories.

(Sarah McLachlan’s In the Arms of an Angel playing~)
Some phans are tired of the irresponsible fridge-ing of their beloved Drs Fenton, and rightfully so!
The phanmarket is understandably saturated with tags of neglectful!parents, abusive!parents, and more notably- dead!parents. This of course, stems from the tones a lot of phans picked up from the source material, and which thus bred abundantly on fanfic.net as a convenient shift out of the status quo of the show and into that good ol angst fic goodness.
Tumblr media
Phandom nowadays has had much time to steep in the primordial angst goo of which it was birthed, and upon reflection offers a softer hand to our dear Drs.
Tumblr media
Now, we- The Drs Fenton Rehabilitation Program or DFRP recommend several ways of coxing your jacks and maddies out of your fic, without resorting to drastic measures!

This idea has been bouncing around my brain like the DVD logo
It's basically just Danny phantom except for the fact that John Constantine is jazz and Danny's father. Maddie is still their mom but for some reason (whatever you want) John is the father. He ends up being something like a wine uncle to them. They do know that he's their dad, but still love Jack too.

Ewooo can anyone help me find a Danny Phantom Fic, prompt (? I don't remember) in Tumblr?
All I remember about it is Maddie thinking that Vlad had children too and Phantom and Ellie were actually his dead children. That he had kids cuz she also had kids. So she assumed Phantom's alive name was something like Jason or Jasper or something similar to Jazz. And Dani or Danielle was to Danny. Especially after she went to his house and found a room there that was supposed to be "his" room (like the successful clone made by Vlad) and she took it as to confirming her suspicions.
I honestly don't remember it much I just really crave re reading it rn.

The Curse of a Cure (dp blurb)
(tw lab animal testing, tw animal death) A lab rat dies gruesomely, so be warned. This whole thing is pretty grim, really.
At first, Madeline had been horrified. There was Danny standing in front of her and Jack, looking like he was expecting a blow and Madeline had thought "I did this". She had shot at her son and had hoped to dissect him and write a successful paper on it. For a second, Madeline thought she might throw up.
Jack had surged forward for a hug and while her husband didn't notice, Madeline saw the flinch Danny tried to repress at the sudden movement. Her heart had felt like it was slashed by one of their sharp scalpel. She had joined in and had squeezed her baby as hard as she could as they all started crying. Jazz had joined in and soon they were on the floor blubbering as she and Jack tearfully apologized and made sure to smother both children with hugs.
It was only afterwards, when her emotions had calmed down that she started thinking about the implication of her son being Phantom. And that was when the doubt first started.
Because Madeline may have been a mother first, but she was a scientist second. And she had dedicated her life to the study of ectoplasm and what was termed in the common vernacular as 'ghost'. There was a reason she and Jack had gone with theory of ghost being imprints of consciousness instead of simply a continued state of existence. Ghost formed upon the death of a being if that being was surrounded by enough ectoplasm. However, they had observed that nothing that was lost from the corpse during the formation of the ghost. In other words, the ghost did not use any of the existing tissues to transform it and feed the ectoplasm, it simply copied what was existing. The ghost was a mere imperfect copy of the previous being, and one that did not evolve over time as living organisms did. They were incomplete, violent copies of living consciousness that could not learn and change which explained why so many ghosts displayed obsessive behaviours as they could not grow past them. Jack and Madeline had thus determined that ghosts were not real beings, but rather twisted echoes of people.
Danny did not behave like a twisted echo of himself though, and Madeline had told herself this was proof that there was something the science had not found, something that explained why ghosts were more than they had hypothesized. She did not mention this to her husband as it felt like a betrayal of the total acceptance they had promised to provide for Danny.
It wasn't until a few weeks later that the doubts came back. Danny had explained to her that he was considered a 'halfa' which was a term for half-ghost and half-human. And once again, Madeline went back to their research. Upon realizing human tissue and ectoplasm did not interact naturally, she and her husband had decided to force them to interact. They had injected a rat with an absurdly diluted amount of ectoplasm, a dose so small that even botulinum wouldn't harm the animal in this quantity. At first, there had been no reaction and for a few days the rodent had been fine. After a few days though, the rat had started behaving strangely, it had stopped eating and its breathing had become slow and erratic. It had started having muscle spasm, and within a few hours it had been unable to move. The spasms had soon turned into full on seizures with its muscle locking into place. It had finally died in what seemed like terrible pain after a few hours of torture. A ghost had formed shortly afterwards which they had captured for future reference. Madeline had taken a scalpel to the body and had found that all the blood in the rat had turned to ectoplasm and that its internal organs had started melting as well. After some further testing they had discovered that if ectoplasm entered the bloodstream, no matter in what quantity, it would eventually contain the whole body and would turn it into ectoplasm which would then start corroding the body from the inside. The results were so gruesome, she and Jack had abandoned this experiment and had resolved to insure never to let ectoplasm enter in contact with their blood.
So when Danny had said he was half of a ghost, which meant half composed of ectoplasm, Madeline had known that was impossible. She had still held onto the hope that she may have been wrong and that their results were incomplete, but the evidence kept piling up: Danny's declining health since the accident, how he had stopped eating as much, how he was not breathing as much as he should, how his heart rate was well-below the normal rate. And Madeline had known she could not keep it to herself any longer. She'd shown Jack her findings and he had fell into a grim silence, the realization settled heavily on them. Their son was going to die, probably in terrible pain unless they did something.
This was still Danny, Madeline was convinced, but the ectoplasm in his body was poisoning him and he did not even realize it. It was not a symbiotic relationship as he had explained, but a parasite clinging to her baby boy and siphoning his life away. Every time she looked at Danny now, the image of that rat's last moments, twisting and squealing brokenly kept replaying in her mind.
So, she and Jack told the children they were working on a new ghost shield and they locked themselves in the lab searching for an answer, something to save their baby boy. Time was ticking and both parents were aware that they did not have any of it to waste.
It took too long, weeks, but eventually they found it.
Ectoranium. It was a very rare element that was not found anywhere except meteorite debris. They had been able to get their hands on some of it by pure chance, and after tireless work, they had managed to distill some into a solution that could be injected into the bloodstream and hopefully negate the effect of ectoplasm. They did not have enough for a proper round of testing but they did inject one of their lab rat with it and it showed no adverse effect, even after a week. They'd made sure it was safe for humans as well by injecting a small amount in their own body, which had showed no effects once again.
Madeline had discreetly broached the subject of purging ectoplasm from Danny's body by introducing it as a thought experiment. Both Jazz and Danny had reacted explosively with their son insisting the ectoplasm was what was keeping him alive. She tried to talk about the rat and the experiment they had done. She had compared its symptoms with Danny's but had been brushed away with a roll of the eyes and a "Frostbite would've told me it there was any danger of that." That was when she realized her children would not be convinced no matter what evidence they showed them.
So, one night, while Jazz was on a sleepover with a friend, they waited until Danny was asleep before getting him down to the lab. They secured restraints around his wrists and despite the padding they had added to make sure their baby wouldn't hurt himself, Madeline felt her throat close up and her resolve waver at the sight of it. But she remembered the rat, and she shoved the guilt away to deal with later. She would apologize a thousand times once her baby was safe. They had hoped Danny would stay asleep for the duration of the process, but unfortunately, he woke up as she was finishing up the syringe preparation.
He blinked blearily before realizing he was restrained. Then he pulled on the restrains as he looked around.
"Mom, dad? What are you doing?" he asked blearily.
"Sh, Danny-o," Jack said. "Don't worry, you'll feel much better soon."
"What?" Danny said, before he caught sight of the syringe. "No, wait let me go!"
"This is for your own good, baby," Madeline said as her gut twisted when she saw the fear in Danny's eyes.
He started struggling in earnest and tried to go intangible but the restraint held fast. He yelled at them to stop, but Madeline forced herself to tune him out. When he saw that she was still walking towards him with the syringe, he started screaming in terror and she could see Jack turn away with tears in his eyes and she could hardly stop her own, as she approached her baby. "Sh, baby, please, this will help you, I promise," she repeated in a choked voice.
Danny had started crying and Madeline joined in as well, as she pet his hair in comfort, shushing him brokenly, while with the other hand she inserted the needle in his arm.
"I love you," she repeated as she pressed down on the plunger, injecting the solution in his veins as he let out one last anguished cry that Madeline forced herself to ignore.
This would save him. She knew it would.

Danny had won a piece of Constantine's soul by right of conquest in his first few weeks without knowing it at the time.
Being minors and above all consider themselves as such, the right to Constantine's soul is temporarily entrusted to his parents.
Constantine was going to a ghost hunter convention to verify the authenticity of some exhibitors on behalf of the JL/JLD. Not really of his own free will he wants to clarify.
But his day radically changes course when he meets a duo of "ecto-scientists" who have a right to his soul.
