Shibuya to Shinjuku: Gege's Use of Disparity
My analysis will be centered around Gege's use of disparity between his characters to drive a high-stakes narrative.
TLDR: Both Shibuya and Shinjuku involve hopeless battles that the cast majorly struggle through. Victory will only come after an uphill battle that favors the remaining villain. I implore you to read the first section, as that's the heft of the comparisons between the Shibuya Incident and Shinjuku Showdown. The other sections offer context for the "Sukuna Cycle" and the despair it causes for both the heroes and the readers.
In Shibuya, characters were heavily underpowered and majorly unable to fight the disaster curses. Stakes were at an all time high, especially after Gojo's imprisonment, and still, the heroes mostly failed to defeat their respective enemies. Mei Mei failed to defeat Kenjaku off screen; Nobara struggled against Haruta; Yuji lost to Choso; and Dagon bodied Maki, Nanami, and Naobito.
For the most part, the jjh forces lost the majority of their match ups. Yuji's final showdown alongside Todo was an uphill battle that mostly favored Mahito. Similarly, Sukuna has dominated in Shinjuku and has gotten more advantages than the cast. As put by Technical_Oil_8868:
Mahito hit a black flash, pulled a 0.2 domain expansion and a transformation while Yuji got nothing and moreover I think the black flash on maki is more or useless because Gojo needed 4 bfs to gain RCT output to recover his arm
Sukuna received Mahoraga and Agito via Ten Shadows; he transformed into a body that gives him inherent advantages via an extra mouth and limbs; Sukuna developed a new overpowered cursed technique that's defeated three cast members; Uraume returned one of his ancient cursed objects; he survived Yuta's maximum output Jacob's Latter; and Sukuna hit a black flash. Sukuna Kaisen has set a disparity that resembles Mahito's seemingly endless power as he continued evolving until his final moments.
Before the last enemy's defeat in Shibuya, multiple casualties occurred: Naobito whooped Dagon before the disaster curse evolved, then Maki nearly died, and Mahito later finished Nanami; Nobara gained an advantage against Mahito, then died immediately after; Todo came to help Yuji, and then lost boogie woogie.
Gege has made overt parallels to Shibuya already. It began with Gojo's defeat after an isolated battle against multiple opponents, then characters began to fall one by one. Higuruma's death was a direct reference to Nanami's.
When all hope was lost, Gege brought back two of the verse's heaviest hitters to save the cast. The strongest without cursed energy, and the strongest sorcerer (did this suddenly become a Gojo return post? Place your bets I guess?)
Toji saving Maki's group has parallels to Shinjuku already:
I've spoken extensively about my theory that Maki will return to face Sukuna yet again. She's the last of the heavy hitters and suffered the least damage between her and Yuta. She obviously parallels Toji within the story, and this link between them further supports my connection between Shibuya and Shinjuku.
When Gege needed a character to take out Jogo, who would have surely swept the cast at the time, Sukuna was brought back.
Yuji foils Sukuna the most within the story. In essence, they're twin spirits, having lived in the same body and sharing an appearance; Sukuna's Heian era form still has Yuji's pink hair for example. Sukuna himself admits that Yuji's the only person who he knows can match his own unbreakable will. Their parallels support my argument that Yuji satisfies Sukuna's role within Shibuya; he will act as the second force that saves the remaining cast from the enemy who can and will kill everyone left.
I argue that Maki and Yuji will return to face Sukuna in the end, just as all hope seems to be lost. Kusakabe and Miguel will likely act as plot devices to buy time for Maki and Yuji to make a grand entrance of sorts. Likely, the soul striking duo will struggle through the battle, as they'll no doubt face Sukuna's full cursed technique, and it will be an extremely stressful fight for them and the readers.
The Chips in Sukuna's Armor
Although he still has yet to use his full CT, Sukuna has taken serious damage that has left him with an obvious weak spot now. He may have played around with Kusakabe and allowed himself to get hit for fun, but stopped Kusakabe immediately once his heart was targeted. Now, even Sukuna has limits to how much damage he can suffer.
Sukuna suddenly stopped healing against Maki, and notice how his major wounds remain despite the black flash boosting his output.
Yuta took out his arm, extra mouth, and left a scar along his face that can be seen in the panels above. Maki's attack still has not healed, and will likely stay for the remainder of the battle due to how long soul wounds take to heal; this wound also slows down Sukuna's ability to heal his brain, which inhibits his domain expansion as well.
Sukuna still has a missing arm and has a weak heart. He played with Kusakabe, but as soon as he aimed for his heart, he stopped him. All variations of cleave and dismantle have been overcome twice now. Sukuna's armor is chipping and Gege's introducing characters who can force Sukuna into straining situations by avoiding his usual CT via Maki, Kusakabe, and now Miguel (check notes). I have already argued how Sukuna uses cleave and dismantle to test his opponents' strength. He did the same to Kusakabe in 254 by saving World Dismantle as the overwhelming ace (just as he did with Higuruma who neutralized cleave and dismantle as well). Sukuna's black flash kept him from having to revert to fuga since slash attacks were not working. Maki and Kusakabe both exposed Sukuna's current weaknesses.
Same as the readers', Sukuna's patience is wearing thin. He allowed Ui Ui to save the cast for a while, but suddenly set a trap for him by leaving Kusakabe out in the open while he hid. The conflict's stakes continue to rise, slowly but surely. As Sukuna defeats more of the main cast, the less combative forces become more endangered of being wiped out. Even Sukuna's tired of this same song and dance.
Kusakabe has exposed the fact that Maki's attack created an incredibly vulnerable wound that can be exploited. I argue that Maki and Yuji will use this gathered information in their final battle. Maki can dodge all forms of cleave and dismantle, which will force Sukuna to use his full cursed technique.
The Kind One
Here, I will focus mainly on Kusakabe's role within the narrative, and how he satisfies a similar role as Gojo and Nanami in Shibuya.
Kusakabe and Nanami came to similar conclusions in their final moments. They both share narrative similarities in reference to their power, and Nanami even appeared in 254. Kusakabe can't do a whole lot, but he's willing to stop running and put his life on the line like the younger generation has.
Thematically, Kusakabe specifically represents the meeting point between the young and older generation. The flashbacks reflect how he's been the main one coaching the kids through the fight until now, cause his superiors are dead (or just chilling in Mei's Mei's case). Kusakabe has been left in charge of everyone else's students, and he's taken that role especially seriously in his last moments. His monologue suggests he felt guilty for failing to save not only his friends, but their students as well. Therefore, he's deemed the Kind One. In his last moments, he's not thinking of himself, but everyone he's lost or possibly let down.
Similar to how Nanami thought of Haibara in his final moments, Kusakabe refused to let down Yaga. Both thought about what Haibara and Yaga would think of them, and this informed Nanami and Kusakabe's motivations as they died.
Kusakabe's fate also resembles Yuji after he switched with Sukuna in Shibuya, but he's not giving up like Yuji did. Kusakabe instead gives himself the Todo speech. He already knows that as the seemingly remaining fighter, he must put everything on the line. He didn't need a Todo to come and tell him, because he himself has been the coach.
The motif that Nanami, Gojo, Higuruma, and Kusakabe occupy exists in other shonen titles as well. In Naruto, the five Kage and Might Guy had a similar motivation for putting their lives on the line against Madara; the youth are the first in line on the battlefield, and as adults, they must step up and protect them if they can.
The Shibuya Incident featured largely disproportionate power gaps between the heroes and the villains, similar to Shinjuku Showdown. Gege prefers a narrative where the heroes face a seemingly endless uphill battle against opponents who gain more powerups than them. Sukuna's advantages will ramp while Maki and Yuji face him in the final showdown. Yet, in the end, their teamwork will prevail, just as Yuji and Todo's did against Mahito.
Notes:
Both Toji and Sukuna were returned more or less after being absent. Maki and Yuji will also return after a more brief absence.
I acknowledge that Sukuna didn't mean to "save" the rest of the cast, except Megumi, but in the end, that's what happened.
The last two pages of 254 suggest that Miguel's faster than a point blank cleave/dismantle, which is wild. The scars on the ground suggest that Sukuna definitely cast his attack, but Miguel avoided it without a scratch.
I absolutely love when the older generation in shonen titles admit that the youth are often unfairly sacrificed in war. It never fails to move me when the adults say it's time to put their lives on the line for the youth in an effort to finally give back. Ohnoki's speech and Guy's final words before the eight gates activation have to be two of my favorite moments in Naruto. It's a great motif.

———————
Chapter 1: Ghost of the Uchiha
Hello guys this is my first ever fanfic. So I thinks it's not that good I tried my best to keep the original Madara in the storyline and I will try to keep it that way. And most of the chapter here is just a copy from manga to introduce Madara in this world. So just only this and yes English isn't my first language and I m not too familiar with the jjk manga so there will be mistakes in the story.
Gojo Satoru, exhausted from his relentless battle against approximately a thousand transfigured humans, found himself panting heavily after expanding his domains of a mere 0.2 seconds. He stood there, resembling a demon with two transfigured human heads gripped tightly in his hands. Just as he prepared to resume his unfinished task of eliminating the special grade cursed spirits, his attention was drawn to an ominous square-shaped cursed object that was thrown its way on the ground.
Gojo's six eyes widened in shock as he gazed at the enigmatic artifact before him. It exuded an unsettling aura, causing a shiver to run down his spine.
Just as some unknown voice uttered the words, "Gate... Open."
As if responding to his command, the square-shaped cursed object began to stir, its rigid form breaking apart into four distinct pieces. The fragments expanded and transformed into a grotesque sight—a pulsating mass of red flesh, dominated by a colossal, bloodshot eye that ominously dripped with crimson. Four pins protruded from the corners of the eye, adding to its eerie appearance.
Gojo stood there, frozen in astonishment, unable to process the bewildering scenario unfolding before him. Lost in time and space, he found himself captivated by his own reflection within the blood-drenched eye.
Suddenly, after a brief moment, Gojo's body jolted into action. He instinctively turned, intending to evade the approaching cursed object. However, before he could make his escape, a familiar voice pierced through the air, calling out to him with a cheerful and jubilant tone.
"Yo, Satoru!" the voice exclaimed.
Startled, Gojo spun around to identify the source of the voice. To his utmost disbelief, he beheld a figure standing before him—a man he never thought he would see alive, not even in his wildest dreams. The man stood tall, his long black hair partially tied up at the back while the rest cascaded down his back. His small black eyes were closed, but a broad smile adorned his face, as if reuniting with someone after an extended absence. A prominent feature on his forehead caught Gojo's attention—a large scar adorned with stitched patterns.
The man donned a captivating attire—a gold-colored kāṣāya garment draping over his black yukata robes. Completing his monk-like ensemble were white tabi socks and zōri sandals.
Gojo's bewildered expression remained fixed on his face as he blurted out a single word, "Huh?"
The man adorned in a yukata chuckled and extended his hand towards the air, a warm smile gracing his features. "It's been a while," he said, his voice filled with nostalgia.
In front of Gojo stood someone he had thought he killed with his own hands just a year ago—the person he considered his one and only best friend.
As he laid eyes on the man, a flood of thoughts raced through Gojo's mind. Could this be some kind of deception or a transformation technique? He desperately grasped at any possible explanation to deny the existence of the man before him.
But no matter how hard he tried to rationalize it, Gojo's six eyes dismissed all the reasons and possibilities. Memories surged forth, overwhelming his thoughts—three years of shared experiences, laughter, and camaraderie with his closest companion.
"He's real...!" Gojo realized, the truth sinking in.
The square-shaped cursed object, also known as the Prison Realm, required a condition to be activated—a minute of standing in the same position. While it was merely an instant for everyone else, in Gojo Satoru's mind, a substantial amount of time had passed.
As the condition for the Prison Realm was fulfilled, the cursed object shattered its red flesh exterior, breaking into six parts that swiftly encircled Gojo, rendering him completely immobilized.
"Tch!" Gojo clicked his tongue, frustration evident on his face. A realization struck him, 'Dammit! They got me!'
"C'mon now, Satoru. Are you letting your mind wander during the midst of battle?" the man in the black yukata remarked, his voice laced with a hint of admonishment.
Gojo's body remained devoid of cursed energy, his muscles unresponsive to his commands. He tried to exert his will, attempting to tap into the well of cursed energy within him, but to no avail.
Is this a checkmate? The thought swirled in Gojo's mind as he desperately sought a way out of his predicament.
With a newfound realization of his helplessness, he redirected his focus towards the enigmatic figure standing before him.
"So... who are you?" Gojo questioned, squinting his eyes at the man who bore his friend's face and wore the black yukata.
"Suguru Geto, of course. Did you forget? How sad," the man replied, feigning a tearful expression while wiping imaginary tears from his cheeks, a sly smile playing on his lips.
Gojo's gaze hardened as he studied the man, analyzing his body and the flow of cursed energy within him. His six eyes confirmed what his instincts had already sensed—this man before him was Suguru Geto.
"Your body… and even your cursed energy… my six eyes tell me you are Suguru Geto." said Gojo looking at him with furious and rage in his eyes.
"But my soul tells me otherwise! Answer me now! Who the hell are you?" Gojo's voice thundered with fury and rage.
The answer came swiftly, catching Gojo off guard. The man raised his right hand, fingers brushing against the scar and stitch marks on his forehead. Then, with a deliberate motion, he began to pull a thread from the stitches.
"Yeesh!" the man exclaimed, a twisted satisfaction gleaming in his eyes as he extracted the thread successfully, holding it delicately in his hand.
"How did you know?" the man, claiming to be Suguru Geto, asked, his smile taking on a maniacal edge, his eyes closed in a sinister he pulled out a thread successfully and open its upper head and take it out in his hand.
The man's head fully opened, revealing a grotesque sight of exposed brain and jagged teeth, resembling something straight out of a horror scene. Gojo clenched his teeth, a mixture of revulsion and determination etched on his face.
"It is a cursed technique that allows me to hop between bodies by switching brains. And of course, it grants me access to the innate techniques of the host bodies as well," the imposter Geto explained, twirling the open forehead in his right hand.
"I coveted his cursed manipulation and the exact circumstances that led to this. Didn't you have Shoko Ieiri dispose of Suguru Geto's body?" the fake Geto asked, wiping a liquid substance from his cheeks that had seeped out during the grotesque display.
"You only think of these things during such inconvenient moments. Thanks to your oversight, I acquired this body without much trouble," the imposter continued, his tone dripping with sinister satisfaction as he began to fix his head back into place.
"But don't worry. The seal will eventually wear off. In a hundred... no, perhaps a thousand years," the imposter reassured Gojo while meticulously stitching his head with a thread. "You see, you're just too strong. You're in the way of my plans."
"Heh!" Gojo snickered, a hint of defiance in his voice. "Don't you remember? Who was it who defeated that body before it was killed by me."
The imposter Geto pondered the person Gojo referred to. "Yuta Okkotsu, huh? I fail to see what everyone sees in him," he mused as he completed the stitching on his forehead. "His ability to unconditionally copy cursed techniques and his boundless cursed energy. Both are the consequences of him having to suppress the soul of his loved one."
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but Yuta Okkotsu can never truly become the next Satoru Gojo. Good night, Satoru Gojo. Let us meet again in the new world," the imposter declared, his tone laced with a disturbing mix of confidence and malice.
Gojo responded with a faint smile, though it carried a somber undertone. "Yes, perhaps it is good night for me. But it is about time for you to wake up."
"HOW ARE YOU GONNA LET YOURSELF GET USED LIKE THAT… SUGURU?" Gojo's voice pierced the tense air, his tone laden with seriousness and disappointment.
The fake Geto's right hand instinctively reached for his own neck, as if trying to grasp the gravity of the situation. However, his response was far from somber. He burst into laughter, the grip of his hand tightening around his throat. "Ha ha ha! This is nothing new to me!"
"Geto..." a voice called out from behind him.
Geto turned around, locking eyes with the one who had called his name. "Mahito... take a look. You theorized that the soul precedes the body, but in reality, the body is the soul and the soul is the body. Otherwise, the phenomenon of the body's memories persisting in my mind even after changing hosts cannot be explained."
Mahito regarded Geto, his tone playful and relaxed. "Must it be the same for everyone? Considering our jujutsu techniques, you and I practically live in different worlds."
Geto took control of his right hand with his left, expressing his thoughts to Mahito. "So, techniques dictate our worlds, huh? I find it rather poetic."
"Hey! Let's get this over with. This is uncomfortable, and I'm not enjoying the sight of you two either," Gojo interjected, his words tinged with a hint of cheesiness.
"I must admit, I am rather enjoying the view myself. But I suppose you're right. We can't risk anything happening," Geto concurred, aligning with Gojo's statement.
"Prison Realm... closed," Geto announced, enchanting the prison realm to fully encapsulate and devour Satoru Gojo.
With swift reflexes, Geto caught the prison realm as it closed, suspending it momentarily in the air.
"We can't use that anymore, right?" Mahito inquired.
"Yeah, only one occupant at a time. Unless the person trapped inside takes their own life, it remains unusable," Geto confirmed with a hint of boredom. "Well, anyways..."
"Satoru Gojo... Seals complete!" the words reverberated, as like marking the end of an era.
Underground shibuya station
Beneath the sprawling expanse of Shibuya Station, Yuji, Mei Mei, and Ui Ui navigated the labyrinthine underground train tracks, their destination shrouded in mystery.
"What the?!" the loud screamed can be heard from the trained tracks.
Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed through the tunnels, causing Mei Mei and Ui Ui to whirl around, their eyes widening in concern at Yuji's distress.
"What's wrong?" Ui Ui inquired, his voice laced with worry.
Yuji frantically scanned their surroundings, his voice trembling as he explained, "There's... something on my ear."
A mysterious device materialized on Yuji's ear, catching everyone's attention. Before the device could utter a word of caution, Yuji instinctively lashed out, cracking it with his hand, his fear and uncertainty driving his actions.
But amidst the chaos, a voice emanated from the damaged device, desperately pleading, "Wait, wait, wait! I'm on your side! This is Mechamaru from Kyoto High! There isn't much time. I'm only going to say this once..."
Tension hung heavy in the air as the fragmented voice continued, "Satoru Gojo... has been sealed."
Having successfully ensnared Satoru Gojo within the prison realm, Geto found himself in the company of Jogo and Choso, who had just regained consciousness after being affected by Gojo's domain. Sensing an opportunity to discuss their next course of action, Geto began to speak, "looks like you are all awake. Now, about what happens next-" but his words were abruptly cut short as the prison realm reacted violently, trembling with an unsettling energy.
"What's happening?" Jogo questioned, his eyes narrowing in concern.
Geto attempted to steady the prison realm, his hand straining under its weight. With a swift movement, he managed to release his grip just in time, narrowly avoiding being crushed as the prison realm plummeted to the ground with a resounding impact. The sudden turn of events left everyone present in a state of shock, their gazes fixed upon the fallen prison realm and the immense crater it had created.
Frustration etched across his face, Geto muttered in annoyance, "Tch! This guy..."
Mahito, intrigued by the situation, directed his attention towards Gojo, curiosity gleaming in his eyes. "So, what's the deal with this?" he inquired, pointing towards the fallen prison realm.
Geto took a deep breath, preparing to explain the situation. "The seal is complete. However, the prison realm requires time to process Satoru Gojo. We won't be able to move it for a while," he clarified, his tone filled with a mix of determination and impatience. Little did they know that their conversation had not gone unnoticed.
Unbeknownst to them, an unwanted presence had overheard their discussion, a device silently relaying the information to an external party. Sensing the intrusion, Mahito swiftly extended his hand, obliterating the eavesdropping device with a single fluid motion. However, it was too late—the information had already been transmitted.
"Tch! They've got us," Geto grumbled, his irritation and anger evident as he glared at the remains of the destroyed device.
As the realization sank in, a voice rang out, declaring the impending arrival of reinforcements. "Hmph! Looks like the jig is up. The Jujutsu Sorcerers will increase in number and head this way soon," someone remarked, their tone laced with a mixture of annoyance and resignation.
Just as those words hung in the air, the ground beneath them began to tremble. It wasn't a mere earthquake, but a disturbance that engulfed the entire Shinjuku area, shaking the very foundation of their surroundings.
"What's happening?" Mahito questioned, his eyes looking around as the ground continued to tremble.
"What is happening? Is it a earthquake."
"I don't know but I think it's not just in this area."
"What do you mean?"
"Take a look at someone streaming online their location siatuation is the same."
While the normal people just making assumptions, something completely different was happening in shibuya station.
"What's happening?" Mahito questioned, his eyes looking around as the ground continued to tremble.
"I don't know, maybe it's an earthquake or something," Geto responded, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
As if in response to his words, the ground beneath them intensified its trembling, but this time the disturbance was localized to a small area not too far from where Geto and the prison realm stood. Fissures snaked across the ground, and to their astonishment, a wooden coffin emerged from the depths.
"Hey, look over there! Something's coming out of the ground... It looks like a wooden coffin," Mahito exclaimed, pointing towards the enigmatic object.
Jogo turned his gaze towards Geto, suspicion glimmering in his eyes. "Did you bring this, Geto?" he questioned, seeking answers from the enigmatic figure.
Geto shook his head, his voice firm and resolute. "No, why would I?" he replied, his words carrying a hint of bewilderment.
As they pondered the origins of the peculiar coffin, cracks began to spiderweb across its wooden exterior. The tension in the air grew palpable, and with a resounding crack, the front of the coffin shattered, propelled by an unseen force and the sheer strength it contained. Geto and the others instinctively tensed, their guard raised, but to their surprise, no cursed energy emanated from within the coffin.
As the dust stirred by the coffin's emergence settled, a voice resonated through the air, brimming with unwavering confidence. It was a voice that exuded power and authority, capturing the attention of all who heard it.
"So, it finally happened... It appears that the little brat Nagato has managed to grow," declared the figure who had emerged from the confines of the wooden coffin.
Jogo couldn't help but voice his curiosity, directing his question to no one in particular. "Now, who the hell is he?" he queried, his words hanging in the air, eager to unravel the mystery that had just materialized before them.
"I don't know either. I've never encountered this type of summoning before," Geto admitted, his memory failing to recall anything resembling the situation at hand.
Mahito, his guard seemingly relaxed, couldn't resist injecting a bit of humor into the tense atmosphere. "Hey, hey, hey! Doesn't he look like a samurai with that armor?" he jestingly remarked, his tone light-hearted as he sensed no cursed energy emanating from the enigmatic figure.
Jogo, however, remained inquisitive, his gaze fixed on the cracks that marred the man's face and armor. "What are those cracks? Is he some kind of puppet or something?" Jogo questioned, his confusion palpable as he struggled to make sense of the peculiar sight before him.
The atmosphere shifted abruptly as the man in the red samurai armor spoke, his voice deep and chilling, sending shivers down their spines. "What did you just say? Cracks?" he retorted, his tone laced with a cold edge.
In response to the mention of cracks, the man glanced down at his hands and the armor adorning his body, confirming their presence. However, he quickly realized that something was amiss. In the technique of rinne-rebirth, such imperfections shouldn't exist. Instead, he found himself clad in an armor, a telltale sign that he had been subjected to a different technique altogether.
"It seems this isn't rinne-rebirth but a reanimation jutsu," he concluded, his voice filled with a mix of realization and frustration. Reanimation jutsu, infamous for bringing the deceased back to life with an immortal body and infinite chakra, was a far cry from what he had expected.
"This wasn't part of the plan. What the hell is that brat doing, resurrecting me in this form?" the man pondered aloud, his thoughts racing. He couldn't shake the feeling that the young Nagato had ulterior motives, orchestrating events with a purpose of his own. Clearly, things were not unfolding as intended. However, before he could delve deeper into his thoughts, he was interrupted.
"Hey, you... What is your name, and where is this place?" he demanded, his piercing gaze fixed upon the individuals before him. As his eyes swept across the group, he couldn't help but notice that they comprised not only humans but also beings reminiscent of animals or otherworldly creatures. The mystery deepened, and his desire for answers intensified as he awaited their response.
Geto, recognizing the need for some form of introduction, took a few steps forward and addressed the man in the red armor with a hint of reproach in his voice. "Wow, you certainly lack manners, don't you? It's common courtesy to introduce yourself before asking others for their names," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of social etiquette.
The man in the red armor appeared genuinely perplexed by Geto's response. "Hmm... You don't know me?" he questioned, his confusion evident.
"Well, it seems that time can be a cruel thing, causing even people to forget or remain unaware of who I am. Allow me to enlighten you."
"I am... Uchiha Madara," he declared, his words resonating with an air of cold authority. The name carried weight, evoking a sense of awe and acknowledgement in those who were familiar with the legendary figure. But sadly there was none here or in this world who were familiar with the mentioned figure here.
So if you want another chapter comment on this chapter. Thanks you
