Doctor Who: The Ultimate Speedrun Marathon - Series 2 (2006)

Woah. I mean, what a Series! I didn’t know how Tennant and Piper would follow up Series 1, but they did a great job, not just in carrying over aspects from Series 1, but doing new things and carving out a new niche for the 10th Doctor. A lot of fun from all angles.

General Thoughts

I’ve always really loved David Tennant as an actor. Even before I properly started watching Doctor Who, he was my personal favorite Doctor (that might change over the course of this marathon, but that’ll come much later). Now having actually fully seen him in action as the 10th Doctor, I’m really happy that he met my expectations and more. He’s fun and snarky, same as McGann and Eccleston, but he brings this new sorta wide-eyed manic energy that one would probably expect from a 900+ year old time/space traveler. His look is also really fun and iconic, with pinstripe suits, long trench coats, and spiked-up hair. It compliments Tennant’s already tall and slim figure, giving 10 a lanky look reminiscent to a sort of alien Sherlock Holmes. The converse are a fun touch, too.

He’s definitely different from his immediate predecessor, but in a good way that makes sense given his new found attachment to Rose after Series 1 (or at least that’s my reading of it). He’s got a bit less angst, although it does peer through in good dramatic moments. Overall, Tennant’s able to juggle what made the recent previous Doctor’s special and memorable with his own acting sensibilities and personality. He really lends himself well to a character like the Doctor.

In companion news, Rose is just as strong and likable a character as ever. I knew new companions would show up eventually, so this whole Series I was just dreading the moment when it became clear that she’d be gone for good. Although I didn’t expect her departure to be THAT devastating! I mean holy fuck. Despite that ending though, Rose never stopped being an intensely compelling character, despite my assumption that her time as a companion was coming to an end.

As for the other campions, we only see Mickey return in this Series. When the Cybermen return to the show in a parallel universe, Mickey decides to stay behind there and help fight their invasion. It was another welcome surprise moment of character development from Mickey, especially when he finally realizes that he has a life and agency outside of Rose. However, when he’s able to return and help Rose and the Doctor fight the invading Cybermen and Daleks, it feels really truly earned on his end.

Also, how cool was it to see Sarah Jane Smith (played by Elisabeth Sladen) and K-9 (played by K-9) again?! That was a really cool and welcome surprise for me. It also avoids being a plot line of mere fan-service, since we get really cool insight into the life and mind of companions left behind by the Doctor decades before. However, they do eventually reconcile with the Doctor in their own bittersweet moments towards the episode’s end. Although, that reconciliation is a little bittersweet, given Rose’s fate at this Series’ end. I hope she gets something similar later in the show.

Queen Victoria’s hemophilia being explained as a strain of alien lycanthropy was very funny and very Doctor Who. The running gag about Rose trying to get her to say the supposed “We are not amused” line was funny as hell too.

The 10th Doctor meets alien Satan.

Cassandra returning was a shock. I know she got a bit of a redemption arc in this Series’ premiere but I don’t really care. fuck her

I felt so clever picking up on the little references to Torchwood before they were properly revealed towards the end teehee. Making up for not noticing most of the Bad Wolf hints in Series 1 ig.

Madame de Pompadour getting a whole episode to herself in order to fight against evil French masquerade nightmare robots from the future was a welcome surprise.

Alright, that about wraps up everything I wanted to say about Series 2. A great Series itself and an amazingly solid start to Tennant’s iconic tenure as the 10th Doctor. Now, onto Series 3.

Gomez plays Madame Satan, otherwise known as Lilith, the first wife of Adam from the Garden of Eden according to Jewish folklore, who steals the identity of Sabrina’s favorite teacher at Baxter High to manipulate her into serving her and her Dark Lord. Lilith’s role over the course of the series is half monstrous villain and half aspirational feminist icon, as she fights to claim her rightful place in Hell and remake it in her own image. And Gomez is perfect at walking the fine line between both, crafting a character who isn’t a role model or even a good person, but an endlessly adaptable survivor. [x]

“Perhaps why I’ve had success with playing villains is because I don’t see them as villains. I enjoy working out why they are the way they are. We’re all products of our existence and the sum of our choices, and if you continually make bad choices you’re inviting some darker consequences.

“I’ve always been determined to try and not just play evil, because that’s kind of boring for you and for me. I’m able to hopefully give her some charm and likability, and that then gives the character some power to wield ― the power of manipulation.

“One of the biggest draws for me of the character is that I get to play those two sides arguably of that one person. All of us think things we shouldn’t think, but Madam Satan gets to do the things we never do. Coming from Miss Wardwell’s point of view ― being this quiet, meek, reliable member of the teaching faculty ― I’m quite sure she at some point would’ve dreamt of busting out of that plaid skirt and taking on her world.

“I just loved that I was able to take that long, slow walk down that corridor and evolve by the time I got to the end of it as Madam Satan. It’s fun playing the baddie because the rules don’t really apply to you in the same way if you were playing another character that wasn’t quite as twisted. It’s probably clear that I’m having a blast.”

“[The performance is] Katharine Hepburn meets Glenn Close. I’m a working-class actor from Scotland and have these heady heights of ever reaching the magnificence that those two women inspire, but those are the two that I take with me into work every day. I have Katherine on one side and Glenn on the other, and the three of us just walk onto set and it’s like, ‘Have a nice day girls! Let’s see what we can get up to today.’

“I really did fall down the Katharine Hepburn hole. Not doing an impersonation, by any stretch of the imagination, but I wanted to get a tone, an era and a feel vocally to translate what Roberto has beautifully provided for me on the page and then make it my own. With a Scottish accent, our consonants can easily be drawn out into American sound, so I wanted to play with that and see if I could make it some otherworldly voice as well.

“I’m sure that half of my performance at this moment in time is on the cutting room floor. I clearly like to play, and in that play, there will always be little bits of magic hopefully, but some of it won’t be appropriate. It’s a new show and there’s a lot of wonderful, amazing characters, and everybody has to find their place and fit together, right? In the beginning, it was about finding the right tone and nobody quite knew what that was yet. It was a balancing act of how far you could push it and then always making sure you give them a little variety so you can go from a more refined, subtler performance to batshit crazy. Somewhere between those two rocks I sit.”

“There’s always a reason for the way we behave. There’s a reason why she’s evil and why she wants Sabrina for the dark side. It can’t just be because she feels like it. The notion of being a powerful woman in a patriarchal society is very old for her.

“[Witchcraft in media] gives us this delicious idea that we are in control somehow and can change things. The world out there is pretty dark and the whole world of witchcraftery is exciting. It’s not just about making wishes and having them come true. It’s darker and deeper than that. It takes us from our childhood beliefs into a more adult version of believing something more powerful than ourselves is out here making things happen. There’s fantasy in there, but there’s also the distraction from being who you perceive yourself to be. It’s fun and not entirely dark because there’s an odd hope in there, too.

“[Lilith’s] not going to go down without a fight and she’s got lot of fight left in her. She hasn’t even begun. I mean, she’s literally just lifted an eyebrow and maybe a finger.” [x]

Okay, so the outfits from yesterday’s post. I did plan to put the detailed reasons and thoughts all in one post, but I’ve quickly realised my thoughts are too many so I’ll do one post per outfit.

Outfit Five: Red Dress and Leather Coat

Okay, there is a reason that when people cosplay as Lilith they usually do this outfit. It's because it is Peak Lilith, it's Iconic Lilith, it's Pure Lilith...if CAOS was an animated show and everyone was drawn in the same outfit every episode, then THIS is the outfit Lilith would be drawn in.

It has the two colours associated with her as a deity/spirit/goddess/etc in our world, with everything being red and black, even down to her lipstick and sunglasses. There is nothing on her that is not red or black; her nails are red, her lips are red, her shoes are black, her sunglasses are black, her coat is black, her dress is red (in slightly different shades and with some black accents it seems in certain lights).

This is what Lilith wears the first time she returns to Greendale since everyone discovering her true identity. She is no longer dressing to convince people she's Mary, she is no longer trying to blend with the teaching staff, she no longer has to mute herself; she is just pure Lilith. I think this is ultimately her style without outside influence; she's not being Queen, she's not been Madam Satan, she's not being Mary Wardwell, she's not being anything but herself, completely and utterly.

And it is such a fabulous, stylish, gorgeous look (which, again, I think reflects how Lilith is naturally stylish. I mean look how she dresses as Queen, look how she always has the appropriate outfit for whatever is going on in Hell, the thought that goes into each design. And I do suspect that the dress Sabrina wore for the mephisto waltz was originally intended to be Lilith's when she believed she was going to be crowned as Queen, not just because it looked like something that the Jenna Berman version of Lilith would wear, but the thought that went into the design and style screams Lilith), so I had to absolutely include it in the fashion aesthetic post.

This is definitely her go to style; red and black, a luxurious leather coat, high heels, sunglasses to hide her disdain, hair at full fabulous, sexy without being 'I'm looking for a date' (an important distinction as, just as I've said in other posts, Lilith never actively looks for romantic interests and she never actively seeks out sex, which is due to all her experiences which I won't go into here as I've written about that more in depth on other posts. So the fact this is sexy as hell but at the same covers up a surprising amount is an important balance that is also peak Lilith) and you could see this outfit in the near distance and instantly know it was Lilith before you even see her face.
