Last song: No Choir by Florence + The Machine (I also definitely had a fic title pop into my head with these lyrics…now to come up with the fic.)
Last book: Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-To Book by Dan Harris and Jeff Warren
Last Movie: Jurassic World with my kids. Good movie to crochet to. 😊
Last TV Show: Breaking Bad (I am rarely current on tv shows.)
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: Depends on my mood. Spicy is never bad.
Relationship status: Married
Last thing I googled: Removing the cassette from rear wheel road bike (I did it myself! I am a mechanical goddess! An engineering marvel! Nevermind the fact that it took two days and I threw some tools. It’s FINE.)
Current obsession: Witcher, always. WOT. And randomly crochet.
Looking forward to: I have the biggest project of my work life coming to a conclusion on 6/1. The two weeks after will be hectic, then back to “normal”. But I am then going on vacation to somewhere that is not boiling hot Texas.
Tag 9 people: I’ll tag a handful of people that I haven’t recently tagged in one of these thingys. @spectralhero @arestlessrunaway @mya-devries @thehelliknow @an-enigmatic-mind @hgwellss @shamelmuts (no pressure!)

tagged by @enterprisery to put my spotify “on repeat” playlist on shuffle and list off the first 10 songs i get.
unfortunately my playlist hasn’t changed much since the last time i did this, so instead, i’m gonna put my “discover weekly” playlist on shuffle and rate the first 10 songs i get. so thank u for the tag babe but i will not be following a single rule.
🪸 erghan diado (song of schopsko) by bulgarian state television choir: we are starting off this list so insanely strong. i have no idea what made spotify assume i would like this but they were 100% correct. apparently this choir performs modern arrangements of traditional bulgarian folk melodies, and this song is from one of their most recognized projects. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 choreomania by florence + the machine: i was surprised to see this song was written before the pandemic, but it turns out that welch based this off of the dancing plague of 1518, where 400 women danced themselves to death. what a cool coincidence that she released a song based on a phenomenon ppl theorize occurred as a result of plague-related stress post-covid. obsessed with the behind-the-scenes info, and the song is catchy. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 becky by be your own pet: HOLY SHIT. ohhh no. “i heard u talked a lot of shit abt me / to ur new best friend / but it doesn’t matter anyway / cos i’ll find a new best friend / … but, you know, i gotta say / i loved going to your slumber party” this is fucking me up. childhood friends are like runaway cats u keep hanging up missing posters but u’ll never get them back. “he doesn’t miss carol not really or rather he doesn’t miss the woman she’s making herself into. kid carol tho … he misses that version of her sometimes” etc etc. this is reminding me so much of those homoerotic friendships i had at 8 with other girls that always ended in catastrophe, but i still remember their landline numbers. five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 bury a friend by pomplamoose: i’m pretty positive this was recommended to me based on my obsession with loveless’s version of happier than ever. i love a good cover, and that one is fabulous. it adds a brutal new dimension to an already angry song. they bring a great alt rock/emo pop twist to it that i adore. despite how good a cover this one is, i can’t say i love it—i might be a little biased; eilish’s original is haunting and nightmarish and it puts everything it can into creeping u out. i don’t think this cover adds any new flavor the way loveless’ does. it mostly makes me want to listen to the original again. one star ⭐️
🪸 the ghost of chicago by noah floersch: this song is appealing to my love of the midwest. it wasn’t what i was expecting going in but i like it! it’s cute. i know it’s meant to be a “i like this girl so much that she haunts me” kinda ghost song, but tbh i like the idea of the narrator falling in love w an actual ghost much more. it reminds me of this wip i have where—no. i shan’t say. it’s a secret. three stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 old cape cod by patti page: … idek what to say abt this. i’m sure white ppl in the 50s thought this was a bop but i do not. zero stars :(
🪸 dizzy in sunlight by the blasting company, ashley nguyen dewitt: now THAT is how u make a dreamy, sunday-afternoon-esque song. the lyrics remind me of a mary oliver poem. “wade in the water / mud covered feet,” “the wind and my mother / they both hold me upright / …oh what a feeling / as the waters / rush over me,” “my sister riding her bike from the store / my grandfather smoking his pope out on the porch / …this life spills over me / and rocks me to sleep”. completely and utterly lovely. five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 in dreams by sierra ferrell: i love the country and folk elements in this. i’m currently on a country music fixation and this is right up my alley. such a sweet-sounding love song, i added it to one of my playlists right away. four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 neutral spirit hotel by local news legend: omg this reminds me so much of some of my favorite penelope scott songs—sweet hibiscus tea comes to mind; both of these songs are folksy and have this self-deprecating element to them. “i think i say i’m quitting drinking every other week / but it’s so hard to stop / when it’s the only thing that let’s me sleep” dean winchester type shit (sorry). three stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
🪸 down in the willow garden by the kossoy sisters: HELL YES a strong finish!! this is a traditional appalachian murder ballad about a guy facing the gallows after poisoning his sweetheart and throwing her body in a river. is me liking this song a loss for feminism? IDK. but i like it </3 four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i’m tagging @keepoffthetardis, @cabeswater, @youthbleeding, @minimyz, and anyone else who wants to do this! consider urself tagged

Spotify Discovery 10/2
Lot of ukulele tracks in this one, and it’s a mixed bag. I cannot explain for the life of me what makes a ukelele song sound not bad to me but when I crack that code you’ll know.
Generally good though! The bad tracks though I hated more than last time. Also sorry for the delay I had work and a litany of other things (other writing projects) that distracted me lmao.
Good:
Playing on Train Tracks: Very Mountain Goats in its execution, note that it does cover self-destructive behaviors so be wary but the honesty here is captured so well. I love the use of language and metaphor, cutting live wires, standing on the cliff but never jumping, standing on the train tracks, it hits. The simple instrumentals isn’t overly “stripped down” it fits the subject. Good stuff.
What We Have is You: A song from Kipo, a nice little lullaby. Don’t remember what the context of this bit was in the show but I really liked it. Sterling K Brown has a nice voice.
The Dragon of Climate Change: Not one I’ll listen to frequently but I did enjoy the jaunty folk feel combined with the “fuck the rich” vibes. Calling out carbon credits was a good bit. Very bard core.
Lover (take me to the moon): Gives me confused person in love and I think it works. I wish I could really say what makes these sorts of songs click with me vs brush them off as kinda overdone but I’m afraid it’s a mystery to me as well.
Ghost Choir Vocals: Gives the iconic Ghost Choir lyrics in the style of “Mr.Sandman” and the singer is absolutely lovely. Fun and short, always a treat to hear the ghost choir in general and Louie’s instrumentals lend to the singer’s voice.
Davy Jones: I’ve listened to this cover a shit ton on Youtube and still love the vocals. The Davy Jones/Calypso storyline is a fav and there’s just. Mwah. Chef’s kiss vibes. Not much to say here other than absolute banger. (For an improved experience look up the duet version).
Suffering: A dance to agony, it works in a way of celebrating despite it all. The singer is lovely, the guitar is jaunty, and the rhythm is fast and fun. I like it! Gives me Crane Wives vibes and that’s always a plus for me.
Medusa in a Stone Garden: There’s an interesting energy around this one kinda folk rock? I like the Medusa energy, the repetition can wear on at times but other than that? Excellent.
The Water is Fine: Gives me Mariza/Delta vibes, there’s nice overlap on the vocals, there’s energy here too that is fun. A bit Oh Hellos, a bit Amazing Devil.
Anywhere But Here: A lovely little music box style waltz, very romantic. Melancholic too, and just the sort of thing I like to wind down to.
Duet in Death: Another classical piece, I’m sure if I knew more about the webtoon Nevermore I’d have more of an affinity? But a duet between a piano and a violin is one I’m always a sucker for. I adore violins when they’re done well and this one is spectacular.
Devil’s Flesh & Bones: Another WTNV alumni! Eliza Rickman is neat, she’s got a very distinct voice, kinda Cabaret and kinda jazz. This one all works for me.
Neutral:
Rises the moon: The vocal performance of this cover is… a little shaky at times? But I like the song and I think that it’s alright.
Tough to be a Bug: A twee little ukulele ditty, it’s cute but not really one that I’ll listen to. A bit too soft for me ig.
Bird Song: Not the Florence and the Machine song, but a different one. I enjoyed the folk vibes but the chorus has this kinda tropical electronica and that’s just not my vibe? The song has a general montage feel which works for what it is but a meh experience overall.
A Shitty Gay Song About You: The guitar plus the twinkly xylophone and the monotone vocals aren’t… really my vibe. The lyrics are kinda neat, but it’s not for me. I could see someone making a cute animatic to it though.
I think I want to be alone: Relatable but the style is a little too TikTok for me with the playful vibes combined with the depressing lyrics? Doesn’t scratch an itch for me.
Nah
Katarina Josephina: I’m not really sure what to make of this one. It’s got the trappings of a folk story song but it’s got a strange energy to it. Not certain what to say doesn’t work for me, but the trap break definitely does not.
The Spider’s Face: I like the song Nothing from this musical but goddamn this one is too “playful sing song evil” for me. The plucking strings and the vocals… it does not do it for me. Very unpleasant to listen to.
Aisling Song: I do not enjoy listening to children sing. This is a child singing in a very ~dreamlike~ way. I’m sure this works in the movie “Secret of Kells” but without the visuals I would really rather not listen.
PATROCLUS MEETS HIS FATE: I love orchestral stuff, I love video game music, but the artificial strings really take away any of the grandiosity for me. It’s very canned and I’m not a fan.
Typical Me: DSMP song and not a good one. I don’t like the vocals or the lyrics. Very monotone and unpleasant.
Give a Little: The saxophone and vintage swing feel are neat but I reaaaaally don’t like the vocals. They ruin it for me. Sorry CG5 but really not doing it for me.
64 Little White Things: This is Scary Jokes with the vocal style and again. Not a fan of that. There’s something about the vocals that just sets my teeth on edge, the sing/talking style with the modulation and the carnival music… no. Can’t do it.

ttpd first thoughts
woke up to find out she did the "released a back half of the album at 2 am" thing again. i’m just listening to the first 16 tracks though
ttpd is lowkey a bop, i really like the synths
lyrical motif of typewriters? shows up in tracks 1+2
some 80s influence in the production? who produced ttpd?
i like the vocals in the beginning of so long london reminiscent of a choir
the words "but daddy i love him" sounds very silly coming from a 34 year old woman
not sure how i feel about the songwriting just yet (i need at least 5 listen-throughs to form an opinion) but the production is so insane. loving the instrumentation
start of fresh out the slammer has some western vibes (like those movies where the cowboys have a shootout). guitars/strings give it i think. rest of the track doesn't have that vibe tho
lets see if florida!!! beats the female feature backing vocals allegations
okay florence welch has a verse. the timbre of her voice is so rich i love it. maybe i should try to listen to more florence and the machine after i get the feel of this album and also the fob hyperfixation fades
i like the bridge of florida!!!
"you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum that they raised me"?
again absolutely loving the synths
i can do it with a broken heart is really upbeat i’m loving the vibes. heartbreaking lyrics/upbeat melody and tempo combination goes hard as always
last ts new album release i had a whole 4.5 hour train ride to process the album and i lowkey miss it. i’m so bored trying to listen to the album without doing anything else
i know the song's called clara bow but it sounds like clarabelle. like the cow from mickey mouse clubhouse.
conclusion: i don't remember any of these songs. i do really love the production though, it's a very interesting use of synths. wish there was a glitter gel pen in here but idk

Character Songs tag game!
Tagged by @v-arbellanaris thank you 💙
I'm going to shamelessly cheat and pull these directly off my Tabriala/A Hero Sleeps in Gwaren playlist so they are Talith Tabris songs but they're also ship songs. Also I'm including lyrics snippets because I feel like it.
Breath of Life by Florence + the Machine
I was looking for a breath of life A little touch of heavenly light But all the choirs in my head sang no
Guns and Horses by Ellie Goulding
You're so quiet But it doesn't faze me You're on time You move so fast, makes me feel lazy Let's join forces We've got our guns and horses
Summerday by Dar Williams
From the ship, we could see it in the distance As the fog was finally lifting We had come to the shores of Summerday Gently landing, we jumped out on the sand and found our way Where the dirt was soft and black We started digging a garden And soon we found the woods that we'd call The forest of Arden for to play
I'll Hold My Breath by Ellie Goulding
Force quit on your losing streak Solve a riddle in a magazine, be tongue in cheek Tell me that we're still too young, That we're still too young, and I'll hold my tongue
King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men
Taking over this town, they should worry But these problems aside, I think I taught you well That we won't run, and we won't run, and we won't run

2, 3, 9, and 25 for espen 💖
2. What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?
that she has a very prominent lighthearted side, one that delights in banter and teasing and sparring and pranks and jokes and friendly competition. the majority of her outward presentation is in positions of responsibility, so unless someone knows her in a personal capacity they are unlikely to experience how fun she can be
3. What is your OC's fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?
I wouldn't call espen self-sacrificing in a way that is destructive, but if we are discussing "fatal flaw" as "something that could very likely contribute to her death," it is that she will always prioritize protecting civilians/those more vulnerable than herself over her own safety. she is very aware of this, but it's almost a universal trait within the watch just by the nature of their job so she doesn't view it as something to be "fixed"
9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote which you associate with your OC?
the entirety of 'no choir' by florence+the machine is honestly The Most Espen Song in existence, on many many levels
25 is answered here!

Since the 2023 Record Collection Jam has been announced (go see the post here!), I wanna talk a bit about the games I've made for past editions of the jam a little bit.
The first full, published game I ever made was for the 2019 jam, and is what really started my path down game design! Before that, I'd dabbled in what a lot of people call "homebrew", making some playbooks and classes for other games, but honestly, that was still game design I just didn't realize it yet.
Anyways, the first game I made was Reaching in the Dark, inspired by High as Hope by Florence + The Machine, which is still one of my favorite albums.
Tumblr media
This is going to be a smidge on the longer side, so the rest is under the cut!
Mechanically, it's loosely derived from PbtA (though I don't think I can rightly call it fully PbtA since it lacks full moves), and shares the 2d6+stat and success/mixed success/miss result distribution. There are four different classes/playbooks to pick from, each with their own special abilities. As a Form grows, they can gain new abilities or moves.
Tumblr media
Players take on the roll of Forms, set adrift in the mist-filled Land, with the GM roll being the Choir, the guiding voice that determines how the Land responds to the Forms' journey of recollection, memory, and identity.
Tumblr media
The game has a very airy, floaty feel, which was directly channeled from the album that inspired the game! There's a "bestiary" of different Denizens one can encounter in the Land, each one directly inspired by one song off the album.
After release, I created a Revised Edition, which gave the game a little more structure, which is the text currently available. A couple years later, I also gave the game a layout refresh, which is what you see in the images above. Here's the first page from all three versions side-by-side so you can see how the game grew over time. Starting with the initial jam version, the Revised Edition, and the new layout;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think its important to highlight what a first game can look like! You don't have to go overboard to make something that resonates with people!
The second game (more of a setting with a small game bolted onto it) was for the 2020 jam, A Stroll Through the Patchwork Kingdom. This was inspired by the album Designer by Aldous Harding. The source album is this, folksy and esoteric jaunt, and I wanted to capture the surreal nature of the lyrics in the game.
Tumblr media
Stroll ended up being a very loose "hexploration" of the titular Patchwork Kingdom, where each song off the album inspires one location-hex.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final game is compact, surreal, and a bit "Alice in Wonderland-sy". Each location is a character in its own right, and comes with two different random tables to help the table fill out their version of that location and their own Patchwork Kingdom. I specifically left hexes on the map unlabeled so that the table could fill in their own unique locations as they explored.
I ended up tossing together a simple Blades/Forged in the Dark inspired attribute system for use with the setting, but the setting itself remains system-neutral.
Tumblr media
All in all, Stroll is very compact, but still contains some of my favorite nuggets of writing. It could be fun to revisit that setting down the road, and expand it somewhat.
The last Record Collection game I've made was for the 2021 jam (I sadly didn't have the time for 2022's jam), and that was Fractal Romance inspired by the album Swimmer by Tennis. Which remains one of my all-time favorite albums.
Tumblr media
Fractal Romance is built using some core elements found in Belonging Outside Belonging games, namely evocative playbook moves and a token system. It's also somewhat of a spiritual sibling to Reaching in the Dark, exploring some similar themes of identity.
Players take on the role of Forms drawn into the endless Fractal Palace, where you just sort of, chill and explore. Locations and NOCs are randomly generated using regular playing cards (which are the tokens in this game). You also gain and spend cards by using different kinds of playbook moves, or you can play cards from your hand to change the situation at hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I call the game a hangout, because the "objectives" of the game are purposefully loose. Its really just about exploring the spaces you create with your friends.
The game has a hazy, vaporwave-adjacent vibe, and has been compared to Paradise Killer (which I only played after I ended up making this game lmao). Legitimately, I think Fractal Romance is one of the coolest games I've made.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that wraps up my own personal Record Collection! Hopefully I can get something together for this year's jam. If anyone reading this has ever considered making their own game, I encourage you to try it out for this jam! Just pick your favorite album and have some fun.
Also, if any of these games interest you, I'm planning on putting them on sale and in a bundle while this year's jam is running, so keep an eye out for that next month.

10 Songs Tag!
Tagged by @tabswrites! Find her post here! Thanks so much for the song tag! I adore this kind of tag games, as songs are a very important part of my creative writing process (:
Rules: Use your WIP playlist and put it on shuffle. Write the first 10 songs that come up and quote your favorite lyrics from each song and/or the lyrics that fit your WIP best (they might be the same lyrics), then tag 10 people.
From my Tales of Wilted Flowers playlist!
Thus Always To Tyrants - The Oh Hellos
Over hill, over dale, through the valley and vale Do not weep, do not wail, I am coming home to you Every tomb, every sea, spit the bones from your teeth Let the ransomed be free as the revel meets the day Let the valleys awake, let them rattle and shake In the wind that remakes all that time has worn away
2. Brave New World - Kalandra
Stirrings in the wind Resonates a whisper from within Warnings from afar Telling you to heed the morning star Waking from the dream Witnessing the smoke that's rolling in The end is what you fear The scent of embers lingers in the air It's like a web there is no escape from It's got you trapped and you long for freedom Every wish every dream was granted Never knowing what they demanded You see the wall how it's getting higher You want to fight but you're all divided It's not a world anyone can thrive in Is this the world we were meant to grow in? Somebody tell me where are we going? A brave new world will rise If we do not act upon its lies Hold your tongues no more Learn from all the ones who came before
3. Traveller's Song - Aviators
Sing for the lost, for eternal affairs Sing to raise our spirits in great despair Through the ashes of oblivion Quick and unseen like the dragon's offspring For we owe no debts and bow to no king Every war has its costs and we've paid Won by the bond of the party we've made
Warn with a call that the battle starts now As the demons listen we strike them down Fighting back the rifts of blood Sent from the sky lies an angel in need Give him muse to strengthen and words to heed Heaven's doused and set alight We're knocking on the gates of hell tonight
4. Something I Could Never Be - Tony Ann, Wrabel (from my Rylisan Fenrith playlist. Sad Elf Boi Vibes)
Back when I was younger, doubt knocked at my door Asked me if I’m worthy and filled my head with words Like shouldn’t I be stronger and that boys shouldn’t cry If beauty’s for beholders, could you lend me your eyes? [...] Does anybody have it all? Can anybody set me free? When the midnight falls, I turn myself on me It hits me like a drop of ink, clouding everything I see But if I’m being honest All I ever wanted was something I could never be
5. Dear Wormwood - The Oh Hellos (from my Kaellel Nevarth playlist.)
And in my hour of weakness, you were there to see my courage fail For the years have been long, and you have taught me well to sit and wait Planning without acting, steadily becoming what I hate I know who you are now (x3) [...] I have always known you You have always been there in my mind But now I understand you And I will not be part of your designs I know who I am now And all that you've made of me I know who you are now And I name you my enemy
6. Breath of Life - Florence + The Machine
But I only needed one more touch Another taste of heavenly rush And I believe, I believe it so And I only needed one more touch Another taste of devouring rush And I believe, I believe it so Whose side am I on, whose side am I? [...] And I started to hear it again But this time it wasn't the end And the room was so quiet, oh And my heart is a hollow plain For the devil to dance again And the room was too quiet, oh I was looking for a breath of life A little touch of heavenly light But all the choirs in my head sang no
7. Hey Brother - Avicci, Cover by D'Artagnan (from my Eiralis & Kaellel playlist. Kaellel is her adoptive older brother and one of the dryads who took her in as a child.)
Hey brother Do you still believe in one another? Hey sister Do you still believe in love? I wonder Oh, if the sky comes falling down For you There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do What if I'm far from home? Oh, brother, I will hear you call What if I lose it all? Oh sister, I will help you out Oh, if the sky comes falling down For you There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do
8. Princess Toyotomi - Celtic Woman
Days and years praying for our love, our future So silently kept inside our hearts so deeply Time went by never changed and stayed inside us so preciously... carrying all the love for you No one never would say a word 'bout the story we know never let the legend vanish No one ever would tell the truth... the secret we know, our long-cherished dream
9. The Witch of Briar Thorn - Karliene (from my Arista Bryar playlist)
I awoke to true love’s kill Pulled me out of sleep so still T’was the day the curse was born Heart twisted in briar thorn [...] I awoke to true love’s kill Pierced my heart with no blood spilled T’was the way the witch was born Now I kill with briar thorn
10. The Horror And The Wild - The Amazing Devil
You were raised by wolves and voices Every night I hear them howling deep beneath your bed They said it all comes down to you You're the daughter of silent-watching stones You watch the stars hurl all their fundaments In wonderment, at you and yours, forever asking more You are that space that's in between Every page, every chord, and every screen You are the driftwood and the rift You're the words that I promise I don't mean We're drunk but drinking (sunk but sinking) They thought us blind (we were just blinking) All the stones and kings of old will hear us screaming at the cold "Remember me, " I ask "Remember me, " I sing Give me back my heart, you wingless thing
+ BONUS!
From my The Last Wrath playlist!
Because TLW has many characters and POV, I chose two for this game! And therefore I chose two of my all-time favorite characters from that WIP, Quinn Aurellen and Julyan Ashiren.
From Quinn Aurellen's Playlist -
For Your Entertainment - Adam Lambert (slowed and reverb)
Oh, do you know what you got into? Can you handle what I'm 'bout to do? 'Cause it's about to get rough for you I'm here for your entertainment [...] Oh, I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet You thought an angel swept you off your feet Well, I'm about to turn up the heat I'm here for your entertainment [...] Take the pain, take the pleasure I'm the master of both
2. Addict - Hazbin Hotel, cover by Caleb Hyles
Yeah, you fell in love But you fell deeper in this pit (But you fell deeper in this pit) While death rains from above So count your blessings 'cause this is it You're not letting it go So what if I misbehave It's what everybody craves You already know So come if you're feeling brave And fancy yourself a mate You want it, I got it, see what you like? We could have it all by the end of the night Your money and power, my sinful delight A hit of that heaven and hell, a hell of a high
3. Rhythm of the Tambourine - Hunchback of Notre Dame
Dance, La Esmeralda, dance! Hey, soldier boy, I see how you stare Hey, butcher man, I see you admire Come gather 'round Hey, Jaques and Pierre! Come see me dance to the rhythm of the tambourine Flash of ankle Flip of a skirt Feel them excite, enflame and inspire Come see me dance, hey, what can it hurt? It's just a dance to the rhythm of the tambourine
4. Natural - Imagine Dragons
Will you hold the line When every one of them has given up and given in? Tell me In this house of mine Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost, tell me Will the stars align? Will heaven step in? Will it save us from our sin, will it? 'Cause this house of mine stands strong That's the price you pay Leave behind your heart and cast away Just another product of today Rather be the hunter than the prey And you're standing on the edge face up 'Cause you're a natural [...] Will somebody Let me see the light within the dark trees shadowing? What's happening? Looking through the glass find the wrong within the past knowing Oh, we are the youth Cut until it bleeds inside a world without the peace, face it A bit of the truth, the truth
5. Alive - SIA
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go Where the wind don't change And nothing in the ground can ever grow No hope, just lies And you're taught to cry into your pillow But I survived [...] I found solace in the strangest place Way in the back of my mind I saw my life in a stranger's face And it was mine [...] I took what you gave But you never noticed that I was in pain I knew what I wanted, I went in and got it Did all the things that you said that I wouldn't I told you that I would never be forgotten And all in spite of you
6. Speechless - Naomi Scott, Cover by Peyton Parrish
I won't be silenced You can't keep me quiet Won't tremble when you try it All I know is I won't go speechless 'Cause I'll breathe When they try to suffocate me Don't you underestimate me 'Cause I know that I won't go speechless Written in stone Every rule, every word Centuries-old and unbending Stay in your place Better seen and not heard But now that story is ending
7. Buy the Stars - Marina and The Diamond, male cover
You bought a star In the sky tonight Because your life is dark And it needs some light You named it after me But I'm not yours to keep Because you'll never see That the stars are free Oh, we don't own our heavens now We only own our hell And if you don't know that by now Then you don't know me that well All my life, I've been so lonely All in the name of being holy Still, you'd like to think you know me You keep buying stars
8. Figure You Out - VÒILA
I could love you with my eyes closed Kiss you with a blindfold Figure you out I might hold you with my hands tied Show you I'm the right guy To figure you out  [...] I heard he got you some new friends With some big dreams, when will he learn That you already got your own?  [...] And I've been thinking Of all the little things That you've been missing When will you learn?
9. Saints - Echos
I'm sorry but your story isn't adding up Think your religion is a lie to keep my mouth shut So I won't testify the crimes you're keeping score of Why don't you throw me to the wolves? I thought you were one You were standing there like an angry god Counting out my sins just to cross them off Saying that my tongue was too loud to trust And that my blood couldn't keep you My dear, you're not so innocent You're fooling Heaven's gates So you won't have to change You're no saint, you're no savior
10. Burn The Witch - Shawn James
The flames lick at my feet Their hearts full of hate What they don't understand, they condemn What they can't comprehend must meet its end [...] But I won't scream, won't give them that satisfaction No, I won't confess my false interaction As I breathe deep and prepare for my passing I hear them chant, "Burn the witch"
From Julyan Ashiren's Playlist -
Hammer and The Anvil - The Longest Johns
And it's sparks a-flying, passion strong I am the blacksmith singing The hammer and the anvil song I thought to make a broadsword, for fighting on the field Much as I know the hammer is a nobler thing to wield For though us humble tradesfolk choose a quiet life The gods of war come to the door of the hammer and his wife And it's sparks a-flying, passion strong I am the blacksmith singing The hammer and the anvil song [...] Now all you merry blacksmiths, a warning take by me Stick to your country horseshoes and your anchors for the sea When the gods of war come calling, promising you gold They'll take your hammer, take your anvil, take your very soul
2. The Sun is Also a Warrior - Leslie Fish
"The sun is also a warrior. Knowledge can also destroy. Nor can the kindest will, Preserve you from the kill. Not all of wisdom brings joy." "Four of those five," the first one said, Are not enough to appease the dead. To save my world all this strife must cease, So now I bid you to conjure peace." The god said "Yes. Though it grieves me sore, For I was also a god of war, And I remember what you forget, Four of those five you may still regret."
3. Blood Upon the Snow - Hozier and Bear Mcreary
To all things housed in her silence Nature offers a violence The bear that keeps to his own line The wolf that seeks always his own kind The world that hardens as the harsher winter holds The parent forced to eat its young before it grows Every bird, gone unheard Starving where the ground has froze The winter sunrise, red on white Like blood upon the snow Like blood upon the snow [...] I've walked the earth and there are so few here that know How dark the night and just how cold the wind can blow I've no more hunger now to see where the road will go I've no more kept my warmth Than blood upon the snow
4. Just a Man - Epic The Musical
Will these actions haunt my days Every man I've slain? Is the price I pay endless pain? Close your eyes and spare yourself the view How could I hurt you?
[...]
But when does a comet become a meteor? When does a candle become a blaze? When does a man become a monster? When does a ripple become a tidal wave? When does the reason become the blame? When does a man become a monster?
5. Play With Fire - Sam Tinnesz ft. Yatch Money
Insane, inside The danger gets me high Can't help myself Got secrets I can't tell [...] My speed goes in the red Hot blood (hot blood), these veins (these veins) My pleasure is their pain I love to watch the castles burn These golden ashes turn to dirt
[...]
Rite of passage, classic havoc Match in the gas tank, ooh, that's wretched Unstoppable, legendary animal
6. Last Words - Solaria, Vocaloid
May the winds carry forth My soul when I'm gone May the harsh of the storm Never linger for long May the birds ever fly Where their journey leads them May the land and the skies Be ever blessed with freedom Come, gather 'round and I'll spin you a tale One of tyranny, of humble dreams and those who prevail It starts with a hopeful young bard and a song Through his melodies The wicked king, he wouldn't rule long
A kingdom of isolation Is as glorious as a prison With a feather of eagle The bard was entranced As a sliver of freedom Before him, it danced
7. Scars - Boy Epic
Can you see my scars? Can you feel my heart? This is all of me, for all of the world to see So, who's it gonna be? The one that you only need? I gave it all, and all you gave was sweet misery So, who's gonna save us now? When the ashes hit the ground? I gave it all, but all you gave was sweet misery This is the end My beloved friends I'm lost in dreams And all I know is where I've been Run, love I'm the truth that you're afraid of I'm a fever, that you made up Just a martyr, on a bridge that's burning down
8. Brother - Needtobreathe
Brother, let me be your shelter Never leave you all alone I can be the one you call When you're low Brother, let me be your fortress When the night winds are driving on Be the one to light the way Bring you home
Face down in the desert now There's a cage locked around my heart I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were Now my hands can't reach that far I ain't made for a rivalry I could never take the world alone I know that in my weakness I am strong But it's your love that brings me home
9. City of the Dead - Eurielle
I'm scared of what's inside my head, what's inside my soul I feel like I'm running but getting nowhere Fear is suffocating me, I can't breathe I feel like I'm drowning, I'm sinking deeper White light fades to red As I enter the city of the dead
[...]
I feel it burning through my veins, it's driving me insane The fever is rising, I'm going under Memories flash before my eyes, I'm losing time The poison is killing me, taking over White light fades to red As I enter the city of the dead
10. I'll Be Good - Jaymes Young
For all of the times that I never could My past has tasted bitter for years now So I wield an iron fist Grace is just weakness Or so I've been told I've been cold, I've been merciless
But the blood on my hands scares me to death Maybe I'm waking up today I'll be good, I'll be good
For all of the light that I shut out For all of the innocent things that I doubt For all of the bruises I've caused in the tears For all of the things that I've done All these years, no, yeah For all the sparks that I stomped out For all of the perfect things that I doubt
I'll be good, I'll be good

Your Weekly Tunes: Softy
Tumblr media
This week, we’re kicking it off with our resident teddy bear, Virgil! Expect lots of acoustic songs that scream coffee shops, flannel, and warmth to celebrate the start of autumn here in the Northern hemisphere. Also, if you have any song recommendations or would like to share your thoughts/favorites, you are more than welcome to! 💚
YouTube
Spotify
Songs below the cut are the ones we’ve deemed the top five from the playlist for Virgil:
Free: Florence + the Machine- “ But I hear the music/ I feel the beat/ And for a moment/ When I'm dancing, I am free” and “Is this how it's always been?/ To exist in the face of suffering and death/ And somehow still keep singing”
Between the lyrics and the tempo of this song just feel so right with Virgil. The idea of being so weighed down by emotions but feeling the lightness of music despite it all is so reflective of him. It’s one of the more upbeat songs on the playlist!
Surface Pressure: Jessica Darrow- “ I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the Earth is” and  “Under the surface/ I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us/ Under the surface/ The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is/ Under the surface/ I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this”
This one might not even need much of an explanation, ha! Out of all the brothers, Virgil embodies Luisa the most from his physique to the emotional burden he takes on more than Scott (or John, for that matter). And as we imagine Virgil as the middlest brother with John and Scott older while Alan and Gordon are younger, he ends up in this in between where he has to be the gap between the two sides of their brother unit.
It Takes a Lot To Know a Man: Damien Rice- “It takes a lot to give, to ask for help/ To be yourself, to know and love what you live with” and “What are you so afraid to lose?/ What is it you're thinking that will happen if you do?”
This song. Enough praises cannot be sung about Damien Rice and this song is one of his best. It’s an emotional call out, especially when the climax of the end hits with multiple lines being sung over each other in mimicry of that little nagging voice in the back of your head finally becoming too loud. For Virgil, it’s something representative of the trials he’s been through to learn others but perhaps not himself. Here is an incredible live version of this song that Damien Rice does with a choir, which you all should really really really watch.
They Call Me Doc: Aaron Lewis- “ 'Cause I've seen it all, helped heroes who fall/ Picked them up 'til they stand tall/ And I've been in the field and worked down to the bone/ To make sure all my brothers get back home” and “You'll never know the heartache/ Of lookin' a grown man in the eye/ When he asked you, "Am I gonna make it?"/ And you've got to lie”
Try not to imagine Virgil being the narrator, out in the field during a rescue, playing medic to strangers and brothers alike. Trust us, try not to unless you want to end up bawling.
3 a.m.: Gregory Alan Isakov- “Give me darkness when I’m dreaming/ give me moonlight when I’m leaving/ Give me shoes that weren’t made for standing/ Give me tree-line, give me big sky, get me snow-bound, give me rain clouds give me a bed time…/ Just sometimes” and “Well now i just walk, well i don’t mind the rain/ But I’ve been singing so much softer than i did back then”
If it wasn’t mentioned before, Gregory Alan Isakov is another artist that will be popping up a lot. His vibes are pretty much Midwestern USA paired with astronauts, satellites in cornfields, and quiet nights with a dash of folk. This song specifically in relation to Virgil feels like a testament to young Virgil making his way in the world. And now that he’s older, reflecting back on it in some off-spoken way

Florence + the Machine - Lungs: Album Review
In honour of Dance Fever's release this month and inspired by my bestie's review of ELO's first album, I've decided to start a little album review series of my own, but for Florence + the Machine!
Now of course I'm starting with Lungs. The real question is, WHICH version of Lungs? There's like four. After some consideration, I've decided to go with the Deluxe version, but I'll also be reviewing the demos released on the 10th Anniversary edition and also Heavy In Your Arms.
So with that cleared up, away we go!
Tumblr media
#1: Dog Days Are Over
There’s no doubt this is an iconic opening, doubling as most people’s introduction to Florence + the Machine as a band: the twinkling harp, the light, cheery melody before Florence’s vocals soar in the chorus… and then you read the lyrics and see happiness hit her like a bullet in the back. Classic!
But as every signature song goes, I’m on the side that finds this immensely overplayed. 5/10.
#2: Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
Florence wrote this after her label requested she write something upbeat in contrast to all the dark songs she already had, and by doing so she felt like she was sacrificing something— hence the lamb and the knife. Lyrical dissonance comes back into full swing and Florence makes sure to swing with a bat.
The production on this track is insane with how they make Florence sound like she’s a whole choir by herself, and the result is a song that could be a cult anthem and yet something you could probably get away with playing at a children’s birthday party or dance recital. Fuck yeah Flo!! 7/10.
#3: I’m Not Calling You A Liar
My feelings on this one always swing. Some days I really appreciate the lyrics and mellow, watered-down quality of this as compared to the majority of the album, and some days I just skip it on sight because I find it cloying. 4.5/10.
#4: Howl
The BEST lycanthropy love song there is. This song’s pacing is so tight, the lyrics are so beautifully feral, and only Florence could make the wordy bit in the second chorus so desperate and perfectly damning. Bonus for this being my own introduction to Florence + the Machine. 9.5/10.
#5: Kiss With A Fist
Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a song about domestic violence. It’s punky and comedically whiny with the mutual abuse between the lovers sounding like slapstick. This is also probably the one song off this album that I feel is properly “catchy”. I used to not think too much about this song, but that grungy rock riff and Florence + the Machine sounding like they’re just shredding it out has since grown on me. 6/10.
#6: Girl With One Eye
This is actually a Ludes cover— and, yeah, it’s about murdering a girlfriend. From the perspective of the murderer. :/
But it’s a good song. Florence’s vocals start out with this soft, simmering rage that later soars into explosions, and the ominous drums and guitar that accompany her blend perfectly to create this angry song with knifepoint precision. However, I’m more fond of the Bayou Percussion Version. More on that later. 7.5/10.
#7: Drumming Song
The beginning of Florence’s water + religion obsession. THIS is their whole aesthetic. This is the I Am Damned But I Love You song. This is the Lie Facedown In The River song. The devotee x ceremonial drummer song. Needless to say, the percussion and piano and vocals on this is absolutely stunning, enveloping you in the tidal WAVE of sound. 10/10.
#8: Between Two Lungs
Even though it's the closest thing this album has to a title track, this definitely feels like a breather after the epic that is Drumming Song more than its own thing. It’s very peaceful to listen to though, with Florence’s vocals gradually soaring alongside the lighthearted melody (despite what the lyrics might say lol). This is somehow more neatly packaged than the rest of this album, but I like it overall. 6.5/10.
#9: Cosmic Love
Gonna get a little controversial here: the lyrics and the drums are the best things about this song, with the latter being the only thing that does it for me. I find the instrumentals and melody cool, but for the most part it sounds empty to me, with Florence having no real opportunity to showcase her real vocal strength throughout the track. 4/10.
EDIT 26/04/2023: I can only come to the conclusion that I was having a major cold or something at the time of writing this because of the PURE LACK OF TASTE. Cosmic Love throws me into orbit. The lyrics are love and melancholia incarnate. Florence sings her goddamn heart out. It's so quintessentially Florence + the Machine with the harp and twinkling melodies about dark subject matter. THIS is the song that deserves Dog Days Are Over's popularity and that is the hill I am willing to die on. 10/10.
#10: My Boy Builds Coffins
The lyrics of this read like a fairy tale! Instant yes! The minimal backing instrumentals enhance the storytelling aspect of this so well. I just love this one. 8.5/10.
#11: Hurricane Drunk
Florence’s vocals on this hit me like a TRUCK. The harp itself sounds like it’s spiralling. There’s hopelessness, bravado, vulnerability, and even a bit of happiness in self-destruction. This is the true hidden gem on the album. 9/10.
#12: Blinding
My personal favourite. This unapologetically creepy song has EVERYTHING: sinister harp, bone-shaking drums, being in love with otherworldly beings, bodies in the garden, succumbing to feral insanity and Snow White stitching up the circuit boards. This song could resurrect the dead. I feel it. 10/10.
#13: You’ve Got The Love
Oof. I know this is one of Florence’s favourite covers and songs of all time… but I don’t get the hype. It just sounds so generic. Sorry Flo. 2/10.
#14: Bird Song Intro
Pretty! 6/10.
#15: Bird Song
This surprised me so much. This and its intro sound nothing alike, neither does the intro actually sound like it leads into this song. But that aside, I love how the lyrics for this also read like a fairy tale/dark folk tale. It’s made even better coupled with the frenetic melody, Florence’s pouty I-Did-What-I-Had-To-Do vocals and the mood of what her character does to said bird. 6.5/10.
#16: Dog Days Are Over - Demo
This feels like it has more positive energy and tambourine lol. 5.5/10.
#17: Falling
I used to just pass over this song until I finished series 2 of BBC Sherlock. Shh. It’s a pretty solid effort; classified under I Am Damned But I Love You and undoubtedly one of the more subdued songs off the album. Perhaps even the most subdued. I’d say I like it, but it's far from my favourite for this album. 4.5/10.
#18: Hardest Of Hearts
This song didn’t make it onto the album after it was recorded, and I can see why. It’s very different in terms of sound from the rest of the album, and not in a good way. The whole track just sounds uninspired, from Florence's low vocals to the downtrod lyrics. 1.5/10.
#19: Ghosts - Demo
This is a demo of I’m Not Calling You A Liar lmao. Florence lets go on the vocals and sounds rawer but more incomprehensible. And that’s about it. 2.5/10.
#20: Girl With One Eye - Bayou Percussion Version
If the first version sounded angry, this whole rendition sounds EVIL. I love it. I adore the more solid, darker backbeat and the violin (?) in the melody, and Florence delivers the lyrics like she’s broken into your house and IS cutting out your eye. 8.5/10.
#21: HEAVY IN YOUR ARMS
This was in the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. AND GOD DAMN, IS IT HEAVY. It’s desperate, haunting, and tragic. It’s a song about heartbreak so devastating it feels like murder, but who is murdering who?? It’s just Florence’s voice annihilating us all that’s who. 9/10.
10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
#22: My Best Dress
Florence wrote this as a teenager about her imaginary dead boyfriends. What an icon. I love the sleepiness, the simplicity and the gothic romance of the lyrics. 6/10.
#23: Donkey Kosh
A song with this title has no right being this good. The guitar is the only instrument present on this and its use is so tightly wound, perfectly accompanied by Florence’s dampened, broody tone. The real winner for me, however, is how the lyrics and imagery sound like they’re from some medieval horror ballad about raising donkeys and jackals as your actual children. 7/10.
#24: Hospital Beds
A Cold War Kids cover. Florence takes this song and drips it in such stuffy, feverish hospital misery. I only wish she’d covered the whole thing! 6.5/10.
#25: Postcards From Italy
A Beirut cover — and supposedly only done because Florence + the Machine wanted to use their ukulele lol. It feels like a simpler cover as compared to Hospital Beds, and though Florence’s vocals are lovely I somehow feel like I can’t hear much of the song. 5/10.
#26: Swimming
Water obsession’s back. And this time she seeks to swim instead of lying facedown in it lmao. I love how orchestral this sounds, and I love how strong Florence’s vocals are! 8/10.
#27: Are You Hurting The One You Love?
This sounds so playful and bright and yet I feel its got all the trappings of a religious hymn. So basically it’s on brand, and boy do I adore it! 7.5/10.
#28: Oh! Darling
A Beatles cover. As a Beatles fan my heart is very happy, but also as a Beatles fan I’m a tad disappointed because this is from a live recording. It’s a faithful cover, but I’m bursting to see AND hear what a proper Florence + the Machine Beatles cover would be like. 4.5/10.
Overview: I fervently think that Lungs is a hurricane of a debut, and still holds its position as the band’s definitive album. It’s their rawest and most mainstream album, and therefore has this universal charm and shambles that just resonates with that messy, running-wild bit in us all. It’s a joy to see the origins of their trademark themes and watch what they do with them and then later on, where they go from it. 7.5/10.
EDIT 26/04/2023: due to the horrible lapse in taste, loss of all other reasoning and senses that led me to underestimate the banger that is Cosmic Love, I'm very happy to say Lungs' new overall score is a good solid 8/10. Peace out

Ok back to Lungs, my first and favourite.
This is the most commercial album, not surprising, there'd been a lot of hype before it was even released and a lot of people needed it to be big, not just florence and her machine. It's expensive sounding, no demo-ish sounding album tracks here, everything's been tweaked to perfection.
Anyway dog days is still a brilliant anthem. One I don't return to all that often as it was so overplayed and I usually skip it on live recordings too, it's just so drawn out. But when you are actually there, that makes it all the better. Getting carried off by loads of drunken strangers leaping in unison is always fun. Made so much better with strings and brass sections later on. May it never leave the setlist.10/10
Rabbit heart now. My very first track that I saw on Jonathan Ross when I was looking for 'my band' as a teen. A huge song with lots of layers, harp, and mythology references with a wickerman esque music video. Amazing live again, I got hoisted onto shoulders at every gig. 10/10
I'm not calling you a liar aka ghosts. A title taken from a poem, spooky references, harp and Isabella summers co writing. It's also one of the more personal songs on this album. It's a bit slow going but builds into that usual Florence finish. This song is actually quite lush, even if I'm not a big fan of slower songs. I still prefer the more raw and angry 'don't tell me' of this track however. Very nice, and appreciate it a bit more now 7/10
Howl is one there is few live videos of and that's because she doesn't really like singing it. I used to love the strings on the version. The heavy gasping breaths, and low vocal mixes are a nice touch. And I still love the driving drums. It's fun, if a little bit fillerish. It's a song about werewolves,as it says on the tin. 7/10
Kiss with a fist is ok, but not all that different from the many landfill indie tracks at the time. It's fun live though, as it's fairly unique in her discography. Still prefer happy slap though. Lyrics here are a bit shit, yeah it's a metaphor but compared to her other songs it's pretty far down the list. 6/10
Not her song but it is a link to her earlier blusesy interests. I went through phases of really liking this one when I looked through her old performances. The bayou percussion and demo versions are better. The lyrics here are off putting imo, but she didn't write it. This is pre lungs Florence. 6/10
Drumming song my beloved. I had heard rabbit heart but this convinced me to buy the album. So sad it's her worst performing single. The general public has no taste. I think her dancing here in this video is better than the stuff she does now It's all here, big drums, choirs and religious and water references. This song is always amazing live, even without drums. Very underrated 10/10
Between two lungs is my dud of this album and that hasn't changed. It's one of her first proper so songs and I respect that. The demo if you can find it is a bit better. It's nice enough, one of the happier songs here but everything else here is just better. I'm never going to be at a gig hoping she plays this 4/10
Ireland's favourite Florence song, the O2 advert song, cosmic love. Another essential song that cemented Florence's sound. And a moment to let Tom Moth shine. She's never made better use of the harp than here. I love how overwhelming this song gets, it's just big and unashamedly dramatic. Music video is a bit meh. Still the highlight of her setlist to this day. Even better with strings. And that finish, it's all so good. Written in 30 minutes with a hangover too. Not bad going 10/10
My boy builds coffins is one of the first songs to click with me. A lot of the machine helped write this. Moves along at a nice pace and is a nice link to pre lungs Florence. Another storyline song. I prefer this to the harsh original. This was ok live, nothing groundbreaking. Interesting topic though. 8/10
Probably the most commercial sounding song here with hurricane drunk Very polished. It's another quite personal one, wrapped up in metaphor. It's a nice heartbreak song, and Tom shows everyone what he can do. The single version had brass added to the end which really improved this song, even if the video was bleh. Interesting distorted synths in the background. The live version with really cool because the song actually sounds tipsy. Album version 7/10 single version 9/10
Blinding took me longest to warm up to. But I appreciate it so much now, it's the most fairytaleesque lyrics of all the songs her. The drums here are amazing, marching along. This song was fucking phenomenal live, closest thing I've had to religious experience. The strobes, the synths and the roaring wail. I actually love it so much. 10/10
I didn't like ygtl at first and for sick of hearing it everywhere. Video is nothing special but the single version is a bit better. I used to get so mad as a teen when they said they'd play Florence and it was always this one. But this song with a string arrangement is fucking amazing, like the royal Albert hall performance for example. Still, feels like the b side it originally was 5/10
Bird song intro is a nice curiosity. Rob wrote this alone and I remember listening to it over and over again at Davy Crocketts ranch during a family holiday at Disney land Paris. Birdsong is a cool throw back to old Florence. A song told almost like a story, like donkey kosh. Telltale heart with birds that gets wilder as it goes along. It's a nice throwback and I'm glad she brought this one along, even if only on the deluxe. 6/10
Falling is a favourite of mine among her entire discography. It's one of the few really delicate songs here and the part about only dealing things when you hit reality is personal to me. I love the swell at the end that ends so gently. A career highlight as far as I'm concerned. 10/10
Hardest of hearts is another I really like, it kind of glides along and like the heart pumping beat all the way through. She's more restrained here and a bit sinister. 7/10
Swimming is another favourite. The string opening grabbed me right away, as did the drums. Another water song. This is far better than the demo, which is more upbeat sounding. This song moves along at nice pace and I return to it a lot. The live version is very nice as well, especially the end. 9/10
Are you hurting the one you love is another team effort and pretty lofi. Classic Florence again, smashing pots and pans and violent imagery. I struggle to make of the lyrics to this day. I can imagine Kate Nash singing this. Not an essential track, but I enjoy it. 6/10
Heavy in your arms is a cool dirge. 'fingers laced a crown' is a standout lyric for me. Miserable Nd despairing, exactly how it should sound. The video was a bit odd,but it definitely made Florence look heavy, getting dragged about rather than carried. Not bad for a twilight track 7/10.
So Lungs overall is still firm favourite for me. So many great tracks, even in the deluxe. Her songwriting is more straight forward and simple here, but she was only getting started and it's all very good. The harp gets the most spotlight on this album. It's very much a collection of songs, an artist trying to find their sound. But that might be why I like this album so much, different songs to come back to and listen to in their own right. Little in the way of restraint and personal songs, but I'm not bothered by that. I spent hours as teen gather up different live versions of this album for my ipod so I've heard these songs in do many different ways. I'll always be biased, I admit, but this album is still no1 for me.

10 Songs, 10 People
Thanks so much @except4bunnies for tagging me 😊! That was interesting, a bit emotional but so much fun 🙂.
Since I don't have Spotify I just shuffled my phones music libary.
This is possibly going to be real odd for me 😅 (me and my very strange taste in music 🙈)
But anyway, here we go:
1. "Midnight City" - M83
I don't know why but that song just really positively lightens my mood and makes me want to sing the lyrics loudly at the end and dance along ... against the beat (so I don't). There is even a drum cover from Coop3rdrumm3r on Youtube that I like just as much as the original because, suprise, it has some more additional drums.
youtube
2. "Poison" - Freya Ridings
My favourite song of Freyas first album, to me it has some Bond touch to it and her voice ist just soo wonderful. Then those touching lyrics. And listening to them now I feel in some way they are pretty fitting for Julia Grosz and Ela Erol (small wink to @except4bunnies 😉✌🏼).
youtube
3. "Cosmic Love" - Florence And The Machine
FATM definitely belongs to my top 3 favourite artists. Not only does she has a unique breathtaking voice but also her lyrics are so heartwrenchingly beautiful. Especially with "Cosmic Love" but also "Falling" in particular. Florence just writes songs and words like they are poems, each song being a chapter and leaves me in awe, in tears and in wonder. And I absolutely love how she includes ever so often a choir in her songs, that feeling of many voices singen her lyrics together with her voice is just so damn powerful (especially in her debut album). And sometimes I'm a sucker for just one line of lyrics that becomes very special to me.
I took the stars from my eyes and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you
youtube
4. "Evigheden" - Scala & Kolacny Brothers
Funny enough (and my music player did that all on its own) Scala is a girls choir from Belgium that became famous for their cover versions. And I absolutely freak-fu**Ing love them. For about ten years I made it a tradition to see them live at least once a year. Another of that top 3 artists of mine. "Evigheden" is just so gently beautiful. Every time I hear that song I close my eyes and at some point it just hits me right in the feels ... and in the heart. The end of the song always seems to destroy me. I can't remember ever not crying when that song comes on. To listen to it live is even harder but also more special. I remember that one time, after loosing a very close loved one, I went to their concert, they played that song. And I burst out in tears sobbing. But I felt it was some sort of a good crying, because I was so deep in memories and the music brought me there and carried me through. It was really embarassing but somehow I needed that in that moment. It will always have a special place in my heart.
(The atmosphere this creates is just so freaking crazy ... yes ladies at 2:45 and 5:42, I get you 😭)
youtube
5. "Take Me Home" - Jess Glynne
Another female artist with. I absolutely love her uptempo and dancy souly songs yet the lyrics for "Take Me Home" are so beautiful and Jess voice is just so full of soul.
Came to you with a broken faith
Gave me more than a hand to hold
Caught before I hit the ground
Tell me I′m safe, you've got me now
Could you take care
Of a broken soul?

6. "Happiness" - Jónsi & Alex Somers
No lyrics. Just sound. And that so beautiful that it always takes my breath away, brings me to tears, touches me on another level. Especially the live version of theor performance at the White Festival. Jónsi is part of Sigur Rós and Alex Somers back then was his partner. They together released that one album called "Riceboy Sleeps". One of my favourite albums of all times. There are so many feels, so much history that I can't put into few words. Just that its very special to me.
youtube
7. "Hero" - Chad Kroeger feat. Josey Scott
Song to the first "Spider-Man" movie with Tobey Macguire. I liked that one back then 😅. Honestly I haven't listened to that in ages but I sang along right away. Such a cool song after all those years. Even though I'm still chuckling by the beginning line "I'm so high, I can hear heaven". Yeah Spidey, what good stuff did you take?
Someone told me
Love would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us
A world full of killing
And blood spilling
Now that the world isn't ending
It's love that I'm sending to you
It isn't the love of a hero
(That historical up side down kiss scene 😍 I need something like this for Tinia ..... 😅🥰🙈)
youtube
8. "La Terre Vue Du Ciel" - Armand Armar
I'm a bit of a sportsfreak (maybe not so much for the WM right now but normally I really am). I didn't know the song before but in 2018 at the winter olympics Aljons Savchenko & Bruno Massot performance to it. I'm not so much into figure skating but that performance had me in awe, made me speechless. Because it was so damn perfect, just as the song. I really screamed at my screen when they took home gold.
youtube
9. "Tornado" - Jónsi
Okay, I probably don't have to state it, but I'm a huge . His first solo album Was just awesome! I love it still so much. And I did had the chance to see his live. I was so insecure back then myself, really shy and I'm an introvert. But I wanted to see him live so badly that me (coming from a small town in saxony) drove to the big city Berlin. I was shoved and mocked. But it was all okay and fine in the end because just to see him live and hear the songs made it all allright.
I wonder if I'm allowed ever to see
I wonder if I'm allowed to ever be free
(That intro and that drummer ...)
youtube
10. "Unser Stern" - Ron van Lankeren
Okay, now it get's really embarassing ...
One song from the soundtrack of the anime "Digimon". That was my youth. I loved that anime. And I can still sing along to all of those songs. ALL OF THEM. I probably should look up where I can watch that again, just for the feeling of good old times.
Unofficial additional number (because I made a stupid mistake and suddenly had two number 5s and continued on, wooopsi 🙈)
11. "Ny Batterí" - Sigur Rós
Yep. Thanks smartphone, I almost thought it would leave me without a Sigur Rós song. Sigur Rós. That one band that changed my life completely when I was a teenager. Jónsi with his falsetto voice, the bowed guitar and that way of using his voice as an instrument rather than singing lyrics (they called it hopelandic). At first I even thought it was a woman singing 😅. I don't even know if there is one song of them that I don't like. And yes, it's strange. It's so strange. But I just simply love their music. I can't even describe that feeling. Ever since I first heard that bowed guitar solo intro of the live version of "Ny Batterí" I was under their spell.
There is so much history, so much emotions, so much tragedy and joy and everything in between I connect with their music. The way that "Sæglópur" carried me through when I needed emergency surgery twice and was so fucking scared. My brother came into the hospital and left me with his MP3 player where he had put on all their albums for me to listen to.
Sometimes all you need is to hear, to feel, to listen. And to let go. No words needed. But make up your own story to the music.
Sigur Rós did that for me. And so much more.
youtube
Since probably all people that I know and follow around here already got tagged for this I will not tag again or evetypne will get this twice or thrice 😅.
Just have a wonderful 2. advent evening and a good start to the new week all you lovely peoples 😊!

favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: Faith (When I Let You Down), Sad Savior, Since You’re Gone
May 11th: Happiness Is, Taking Back Sunday
familiarity: Funnily enough, when I was studying abroad in Ireland back in 2014, I checked in on TBS and - instead of checking out all the albums in between this one and the last one i remembered - i jumped straight to this one. don’t regret it! this album feels like a slight turn from their older stuff, but it was a direction i really enjoyed and it reminds me of long, evening walks around the University of Limerick’s campus.
favorite(s) before/after listen: Flicker, Fade; Stood a Chance, Beat Up Car, It Takes More, Better Homes and Gardens, Like You Do, Nothing At All
standout lyric: the bridge and outro of “Flicker, Fade” is [chef’s kiss]
May 12th: Tidal Wave, Taking Back Sunday
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: Homecoming, I Felt It Too, Call Come Running, I’ll Find A Way To Make It What You Want
May 13th: Dance Fever, Florence + The Machine
familiarity: [bangs on pots and pans] new Florence album!! NEW FLORENCE ALBUM!!!
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: King, Free**, Choreomania, Girls Against God, Dream Girl Evil, Cassandra, Heaven is Here, Daffodil, My Love
standout lyric: the bridge of Free, my friends. that’s what it feels like to be a creator of any media of art. that’s just the meaning of life right there.
May 14th: Monsters, The Midnight
familiarity: discovered The Midnight through Julien Solomita. he uses their song “Good in Red” a lot on his streams, and I would highly suggest their Horror Show EP. it’s an album for driving at dusk with the windows down. figured, since I enjoyed it so much, might as well check out an album!
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: ((gonna be honest with you. i am filling each of these days out right now and i usually like the songs that i like the most on spotify so that i remember but i don’t have any liked on this album. but i remember enjoying this album so i think i just thought the whole album was a vibe overall. maybe, someday, if i have an extra hour, i’ll relisten and update this with specific songs but...until then...I’ll just give it a thumbs up!))
May 15th: Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain
familiarity: No familiarity with the artist but I ran into a tiktok on my fyp that included a snippet from the scream in Ptolemaea and I was like,”Sign me up!”
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: American Teenager, A House in Nebraska, Family Tree, Thoroughfare, Ptolemaea, Televangelism, Sun Bleached Flies, Strangers
standout lyric: "What I wouldn't give to be in Church this Sunday / Listening to the choir, so heartfelt, all singing / God loves you, but not enough to save you / So, baby girl, good luck taking care of yourself”
May 16th: Back of My Mind, H.E.R.
familiarity: I am going to see my favorite boys, Coldplay, on the 28th, so we are officially entering the preparation stretch of the month. H.E.R is one of Coldplay’s openers. Also, should be noted, I will be skipping the song on this album that features a certain abuser.
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: We Made It, Damage, I Can Have It All, Slide
notes: Since I am getting to these write-ups so late, to the point that the concert has come and gone, I can say that H.E.R was amazing on stage. This album was pure R&B, which I enjoyed, but she was up on stage, shredding on the electric guitar and playing the drums and just rocking out. Loved that style from her!
May 17th: FANDOM, Waterparks
familiarity: had an extra day in my concert preparation to slip in a random album. I know Waterparks from their song “I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore”, a Scanlan Shorthalt anthem, but felt compelled to check out the rest of this album after hearing another song on a playlist. also, i gotta be real here. didn’t realize that this album came out in 2019. it has the vibe of the mid-00s emo/punk scene.
favorite(s) before listen: I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore
favorite(s) after listen: I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die Anymore, Watch What Happens Next, High Definition, Telephone, Turbulent, [Reboot]
May 18th: Gallows (Deluxe), DRAMA
familiarity: another one of Coldplay’s openers.
favorite(s) before listen: N/A
favorite(s) after listen: Barely Friends, Falling, Missing
May 19th: Parachutes, Coldplay
familiarity: ah, and here it begins, the album where my love for Coldplay began. I used to “steal” the CDs for this album and A Rush of Blood To The Head from my dad’s car and listen to them on our 5-CD boombox in the basement. I listened to “We Never Change” with all the wistful melancholy that a prepubescent child can possess.
favorite(s): Since I love Coldplay and they are My Boys™, I feel entitled to wax at length about my feelings on each album. because I have opinions. That being said, there are only two Coldplay albums that I consider to be true “No Skips” albums and Parachutes is very close...but not one of them. I would still highly recommend it to be listened to from start to finish. There’s no true “duds” on this album, just a couple songs that take some warming up to. While Yellow is, of course, a classic, I would pick a live version of it over the album recording any day. my personal favorite picks from this album are...Don’t Panic (one of their best and my favorite from this album), Shiver, Trouble, We Never Change, Everything’s Not Lost
standout lyric: "Oh, all that I know / There's nothing here to run from / ‘Cause yeah, everybody here's / Got somebody to lean on”
May 20th: Harry’s House, Harry Styles
familiarity: Taking a break from Coldplay to check out the new Harry Styles album
favorite(s) before listen: As It Was
favorite(s) after listen: As It Was, Music For a Sushi Restaurant, Late Night Talking, Little Freak, Matilda, Day Dreaming, Keep Driving, Satellite
standout lyric: not a lyric, but the outro to As It Was where, after the bridge, he brings in wedding bells...that shit changed me fundamentally
May 21st: A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay
familiarity: remember when I said that I only have two Coldplay albums that I consider to be perfect? This is number #1 out of the 2.
favorite(s): There’s not a single song on this album that I would ever dare to skip. This album should be enjoyed front-to-back often and with reverence. Not only are these songs all amazing on the album recording, but this album is best known for having the most songs that are staples to Coldplay live performances to the point that I was disappointed when songs like In My Place and God Put a Smile upon Your Face were not included on the setlist for their current tour. That’s the problem with having a 20+ year discography. You can play a 2-hour long show and still not be able to fit in all your best hits. In particular, those two aforementioned songs MUST be enjoyed alongside their live versions. God Put a Smile upon Your Face, especially. I love this album so much that I even struggle to pick a favorite. I long dream of them embracing this sound again but, at the same time, you could never replicate this album..Just...You Gotta Listen To This Album. That is my platform. That is my truth.
standout moment: I think I’m gonna hand my honorable mention to the bridge of Politik. life-changing bridge. Also, See You Soon, a song from this era that was never officially released but has a live recording is one of my absolute underrated Coldplay songs. Highly recommend.
May 22nd: X&Y, Coldplay
familiarity: notoriously the most hated Coldplay album by Coldplayers. if someone names this album as their favorite, it’s one of the most surefire ways to out yourself as not really listening to Coldplay. that being said, this album holds a lot of sentimental value to me and, as such, I think quite a few songs that I love like Low and The Hardest Part would be scoffed at by more reasonable fans.
favorite(s): My favorite from this album is Swallowed in the Sea. It’s attached to be a very specific and personal childhood memory for me, and I am very protective of it. I think we all have a song like that. Which is to say, seeing it crop up on Fjorester playlists all throughout CR2? Drove me mad. How dare you reduce it to a simple love song when it means so much more than that!! Other notable mentions from this album are X&Y (listen, and listen close, the lyric is “YOU become my best friend” not “SHE become my best friend”. Coldplay uses gender neutral pronouns more often than not which is why they are beloved among the queer community, you fools!!) and A Message.
standout moment: When the bridge hits in A Message and Chris’ adds on, with absolute devastation and heartbreak, “And I love you, please come home” to the chorus lyrics. yeah. We should talk about it more.
May 23rd: Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, Coldplay
familiarity: and here we have it -- the second perfect Coldplay album. I may be biased because this is the era where I saw them in concert for the first time and when I actually felt like I was a part of the Coldplayer community, but I think every song from this era -- Prospekt’s March and all the B-sides -- are worthy of praise as well. though I could take or leave most of the “remixes”. After X&Y, this album was a huge comeback for Coldplay. X&Y almost tore them apart, and every inch of this album is built on togetherness and love between four best friends who chose each other and the music they loved to make. Like A Rush of Blood to the Head, it has such a unique and distinct sound to it that, as much as I’d love to see it, I know that it’s not replicable.
favorite(s): My favorite from this album is 42, but my underrated favorite is Yes. Do the people know? Do they know that Yes is one of Coldplay’s sexiest and most sensual songs? Do they know? Also, the best version of Viva la Vida can be found on their live album, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, only now available on Spotify as of this year.
standout lyric: My standout lyric is actually gonna go to “Gravity, release me and don't ever hold me down / Now my feet won't touch the ground” from Life in Technicolor ii from the Proskept’s March EP. I can’t explain it; it’s just always meant a lot to me.
May 24th Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay
familiarity: Coldplay’s official entrance into the pop genre, and -- Damn, they did it with style. It was also the introduction the Xylo bands at concerts -- now a Coldplay staple. This is another album that has a lot of sentimental value to me. The first single, “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall”, came out the day of my high school graduation and it was also the day that we had to put down our childhood cat, Annie. The full album was released on the day that we had to put down our childhood dog, Ellie. It was an album that was there for me during a year where it felt like I was having to say goodbye to my whole childhood. This album also saw a huge boom in the Coldplay fandom on tumblr. It’s since died down, but those were fun days.
favorite(s): My favorite song from this album is Charlie Brown. You know when you’re at a concert and suddenly everything seems to slow as you look around at the thousands of people who are there with you? Confetti rains down around you. Every nerve in your body is buzzing. You are elated and bright-eyed. and every single person is experiencing the same moment as you. all of you, together. and you are just hit with a wave of total adoration and affection for every single one of them? Yeah, Chris Martin captured that feeling with the last 35 seconds of Charlie Brown in 2011, and I have never emotionally recovered. Honorable mentions go to Every Teardrop is a Waterfall, Hurts like Heaven, and Up With The Birds. Major Minus is also majorly underrated.
standout moment: when the instrumental shifts in Up With The Birds, and Chris sings “Might have to go, where they don't know my name / Float all over the world just to see her again”....yeah...i cry every time....
May 25th Ghost Stories, Coldplay
familiarity: ah, the divorce era. I honestly don’t have a lot to say about Ghost Stories. I see it as the yin to Mylo Xyloto’s yang. It was an intimate era -- quiet and subtle -- compared to the big, loud explosions of color that were the trademarks of MX. and, I think a lot of Coldplayers view it in the same way. It’s not an album for discussion and Opinions. it’s just an album for listening and nodding understandably.
favorite(s): My favorite song from this album is Oceans. When I went to see Coldplay live in 2016, our show got rained out, but they went out with a bang by playing A Sky Full of Stars. The energy in the stadium that night was and remains unmatched. To this day, 3 minutes and 3 seconds of ASFoS hits and I tear up....I just...love Coldplay so much...
standout lyric: “You’ve got to find yourself alone in this world” are the lyrics for the one and only tattoo that I am dead-set on getting one day
May 26th A Head Full of Dreams, Coldplay
familiarity: another notoriously hated album by Coldplay fans. which is a fact that I’m glad I found out much later because this album carried me through the worst years of my life. Coldplay really said “When you’re in pain, when you think you’ve had enough / Don’t ever give up” and I sobbed on the interstate, driving 70 mph, because I knew they were right.
favorite(s): Up&Up has my heart. It’s what hope sounds like to me. A Head Full of Dreams deserves to be used in some kind of cyperpunk/sci-fi media -- 1:50 and onwards? Perfect sci-fi ambience. I am in space. We are the universe and the universe is us. Birds is beloved amongst Coldplay fans, and for good reason. I also have a soft spot for Adventure of a Lifetime. It should also be noted that Everglow is only valid when it’s played live; the album recording is meh.
standout lyric: Gotta give it up to “When you’re in pain, when you think you’ve had enough / Don’t ever give up”
May 27th Everyday Life, Coldplay
familiarity: After the more pop-rooted sounds of the previous three albums, this album was a return to their more alternative sound -- with a lemon wedge of pop. In a lot of ways, this album listens to me like the culmination of all their previous eras. There’s elements of Parachutes, elements of A Rush of Blood to the Head, elements of It’s also the first album where Chris Martin let himself say ‘fuck’; we were all very happy for them.
favorite(s): My favorite song is Champion of the World. Honorable mention to Arabesque. The sax solo goes on just a little too long, but it’s otherwise perfect. I love any Coldplay song where they go a bit harder, dig a bit deeper with their sound, and Arabesque is definitely one of those songs. You also can’t go wrong with Sunrise, Trouble in Town, Orphans, Èkó, Everyday Life, and Old Friends.
standout lyric: when Chris sings “I guess we’ll be raised on our own then” in Orphans
May 28th Music of the Spheres, Coldplay
familiarity: It’s the day of the concert, and we have reached the most recent Coldplay album! This album is very hit-and-miss for me. Songs like Colortura and People of the Pride are easily two of the best amongst their entire discography, but they’re stuck on an album that feels very sparse and mid-tier. Out of all the albums that they’ve released before now, this one has felt the most incomplete and poorly executed. Coldplay always puts on a great show, but this album was truly saved by the graces of its best songs.
favorite(s): The moment Coldplay dropped that minute-or-so long trailer video for Music of the Spheres and I heard that snippet of People of the Pride, I was in love. The moment I heard People of the Pride on the album, I knew I needed to hear it live. The moment I heard it live, I lost my goddamn mind. People of the Pride is easily one of the best Coldplay songs, and it makes saying this album isn’t that great so hard lol. If Coldplay would just release an album that’s full of songs like God Put a Smile upon Your Face and People of the Pride, they would be unstoppable, and I believe this whole-heartedly in my heart and soul. Colortura is also a masterpiece. It’s over 10 minutes long, and it should be. When the music box instrumental starts at 5:34, I ascend to a higher plane of being. I was so disappointed that they took it off the setlist of the tour, but also I would have been sobbing in that stadium if they’d kept it. Honorable mention to Infinity Sign for immortalizing the “Olé Olé Coldplay” chant, which is the best Coldplay chant, and to Humankind. Biutyful won me over eventually, mostly because it comes right after People of the Pride and I listened to People of the Pride so much, but it’s mostly saved by Chris’ solo vocals at 2:12.
standout lyric: “We’re only human / But we’re capable of kindness / So they call us Humankind”. Also, the last 30 seconds of My Universe are the best part. I love when it just sounds like they’ve having fun.

Songs About Ghostly Spirits
Deep in the misty moors and haunted hills, there are melodies that echo through the night, tales that sing of spirits and songs about ghosts that chill the soul. From the mournful wail of a phantom choir to the haunting whisper of a ghostly lullaby, these spectral tunes beckon to those who dare to listen.
Songs about ghosts and spirits have a certain allure, a pull that draws us in like moths to a flame. They speak of the unknown, the unseen, the unexplainable, stirring something primal within us. Each haunting note, each eerie harmony, carries with it the weight of the unknown, the mysteries of the afterlife, and the whispers of those who have passed beyond the veil.
In the quiet of the night, when the moon is full and the shadows are long, these songs about ghosts and spirits can be heard on the wind. They tell of spectral apparitions, of restless souls seeking redemption, and of the eternal struggle between light and darkness. They remind us of the fragility of life, and the inevitability of death.
The melodies are haunting, the lyrics steeped in mystery, and the voices of the singers seem to echo from beyond the grave. The music takes on a life of its own, each note a fleeting reminder of what once was, and what may yet be. And in the end, we are left with a sense of wonder, of awe, and of the unknown, forever searching for the answers to the mysteries that lie beyond.
So let us listen, dear friends, to the songs about ghosts and spirits that fill the air. Let us embrace the unknown, the unexplainable, and the supernatural. For in these spectral melodies, we may find a glimpse of the eternal, a hint of the divine, and the promise of a world beyond our own.
