⭐️ i’d be excited to hear literally anything about tales of the vampiric, ghostly, or otherwise unholy residents of the penderwick house!

omg you're the best. get ready for some strong oversharing!

ok, i don't have a whole lot in the way of background information, moreso i have origins of various elements.

The fic itself was born from a bizarre bout of depression I experienced during the summer of 2021, where I found myself almost constantly listening to explicit harry potter podfics throughout the day. As part of my strategy to get myself out of this hole, I set some specific routines for myself to follow everyday, including something my therapist called Morning Pages, where I had to write three pages in my notebook every morning of whatever I wanted. As the penderwicks have always been my comfort characters, particularly Jane, most of what i wrote revolved around them. One of my favourite movies, especially at the time, was also what we do in the shadows (2014). it's so ridiculous and i love the premise of a bunch of dumbass vampires living in a house together. Long story short, this fic was born out of me trying to make myself laugh during a rough month.

The footnotes!!! They're a pain in the ass to code (again thank you to "The Nice and Accurate Guide to Footnotes" by Vigs on Ao3 for explaining it in such a user-friendly way - I would have been completely lost without this guide) but were SO much fun. I truly went ham with them on chapter two and almost definitely will do the same on chapter three (the draft already has several). Anyway, these 1000% came from my 2021 good omens obsession. I was reading a lot of good omens fic at the time, many of which included hilarious footnotes (the way the book does) and i was dying to try it. somewhere, deep in my wips, I have a series plan where jane visits a bunch of weird bookshops (also born from the Morning Pages), and vol 3 is a crossover where jane visits aziraphales bookshop lol, so lmk if anyone's interested in that!

finally!! my favourite character in the whole fic is actually probably lydia. she hasn't been featured a ton in the chapters so far, but somewhere I have her bakcstory written out (more Morning Pages) and it's HARROWING!!! I love the idea of her being a washed-up but very young vaudeville dancer in the 20s. a lot of ch3 is going into her world more and it's so much fun, i adore her.

Also!!! tommy's a trans guy. this is completely irrelevent to the plot, but i know it in my heart.

I love how Elizabeth Penderwick is characterized in death. Loving and vivacious, yes, but we know from the bits of her that Skye embodies that she could be stubborn and hot-tempered. Human, in other words. Her family will think about her every day. There will be an empty seat for her at every wedding, every graduation, every heartbreak, but they will learn to love without her. They will know for certain that she would have been best friends with Iantha and fallen in love with Ben and Lydia, despite Lydia’s protests that they couldn’t both exist at the same time and Skye’s reassurances about parallel universes. I can only hope for a death this sweet.

When I was like nine or ten I read the Penderwicks for the first time. I became obsessed with them at age 11 when I read book 2-4. My whole family was so annoyed cause I wouldn’t stop talking about them. None of my friends read them so I never had someone to talk to. I looked if there was a Penderwicks fandom on Tiktok or Instagram or Pinterest but no. There books were mentioned a few times but there was still never a fandom, yk? So then I downloaded tumblr and suddenly discovered that there was a Penderwicks fandom here! Finally !!! I know it’s a very very small one but I love it so so so much. You are precious guys

Skye Penderwick is bi, here’s why

I have seen a lot of people on here saying that Skye was very obviously a lesbian. But in my opinion, Skye was most definitely queer. And on top of that, most definitely sapphic. But instead of just headcannoning every tom-boy character as a lesbian. I feel it is more fair to look at all the possible sexualities first.

I mean, if we’re talking about stereotypes I feel Skye fits in the bi category pretty well. In the books she is most often described wearing jeans, who says they aren’t cuffed? And math? astronomy? Screams bi to me.

But really, I do ship Skye and Jeffrey, and it’s because I felt their relationship had such a good build up. And most people would say that the romantic interest was one sided. In my opinion it was obviously not, there was clear evidence in the book that Skye cared about Jeffrey in a way that was way more deep than any of her other siblings, and all the other characters knew it (ahem, Jane letting Skye visit Jeffery first? Skye opening up to only Jeffery about her feelings/responsibilities? And many more instances)!

But, I do feel Skye would have a preference in girls, therefore this could add to the reason she was angry at herself and also continued to reject Jeffrey’s advances.

In my opinion Skye is probably also Demi-romantic. And a lot of times it’s really hard for demi people to admit they are in love, because a lot of the time they already have a great connection with this person, that they don’t want to ruin. The first time Skye rejects Jeffrey to his face (In Spring, hallway argument) she says she can’t be with him because she is scared of messing up, and ultimately hurting him.

I related to Skye so much as a kid, and still do. Yes, I legitimately cried while reading the last book, just thinking over and over again, this isn’t her! Skye wouldn’t do that! And I swear I am not projecting my sexuality on to her, but as a Demi-romantic bi I feel even more of my experiences and feelings being unintentionally, but very obviously represented in the book.

And, let me just say, Jeffrey is 100% bi as well. And who doesn’t love a bisexual power couple???

Sometimes, the Penderwick family holds a presentation night - a blatant excuse for Martin and Iantha to rehearse their lectures. Even still, it’s become a beloved family pastime. Ben’s first presentation was a list of reasons why Lydia was an alien. Once Lydia was old enough to understand it, she countered with a list of reasons why Ben was a worm. The most memorable presentation, however, was given by Jane, and solely consisted of pictures of her dad and Iantha as children that she’d scrounged up from god knows where. She’d made sure that aunt Claire was present as well, and the event went down in penderwick family history.

Penderwicks Headcanons

--At some point during their teen years, Jane insists on giving Skye a makeover, which Skye protests ferociously. Unfortunately, all of the other Penderwick siblings hold her down and take tons of pictures for posterity. Iantha tells them to leave the poor girl alone, but it’s so half-hearted that no one takes her seriously. @the-gardam-street-blog already did Penderwicks and Co. on each others instas photo series, so it’s basically cannon. 

--At some point, Jane had a crush on Jeffrey. I always thought that the Little Women romantic parallel would play out with Jane instead of Batty, and it would be very in keeping with Jane’s personality to have this sudden, overwhelming infatuation with the person she previously saw as a brother figure. (He’s just so brave and talented and kind, and his eyes are as green as emeralds, etc, etc.) But after some time, and some very angsty poetry she’d outgrow it. 

--The first time Batty calls Iantha “Mom”, Mr. Penderwick smiles wistfully, the older three have an emergency MOOPS, and Iantha tries not to let her rapidly beating heart burst into a million pieces. Speaking of the MOOPS, Skye would be furiously tight-lipped, because she lacks the self-awareness to express her unresolved emotions regarding her mother’s death,and the betrayal she feels on her mother’s behalf. Some day much, much later, Mr. Penderwick will explain to her that Elizabeth would be filled with joy at the thought of Iantha adopting Batty. Rosalind would try her best to focus solely on what this means for Batty’s well-being, but somewhere in the back of her mind, there is a sigh of relief.Jane would be almost as emotional as Iantha, because she had accepted her well before her sisters, and can finally let go of the guilt and confusion she’s been wrestling with. 

--Nick and Tommy often babysat Ben -- often with disastrous results. Somehow, Martin and Iantha never attempt to hire anyone else, and after Lydia is born and Nick joins the military, Tommy continues the tradition. He tells himself it’s to honor Nick and make his mother happy, but let’s be honest -- Rosalind is far too easily impressed by his ability to pick up a bottle. 

The characterization of the Penderwicks is rich and deeply authentic, but there is so much that happens off-page. What are some of your speculations, head canons, and perhaps even fan fiction about the lives of the Penderwicks? I will add more as I think of them.
