Lockwood opens the door, surprised to see you standing there in the rain, drenched and shivering. It was nearing dusk, and the haze of the rain and light fading from the day, and the street lamps started to turn on, the glow of them lit up your face.
It had only been two days since he last saw you, and even standing there soaked with your converse full of water sloshing when you leaned onto either foot, holding a grey duffle bag, you took his breath away. It was just the same as your badass move in the house during the ghost fight, even when he saw you getting fired up over his endless and harmless flirting.
Lockwood finally looked into your eyes, and it wasn’t just the rain that was pouring onto your face, there were tears coming out of your eyes.
He wanted to bring you into his arms to comfort you, and never let go. That is until he's brought out of his thoughts, when Lucy and George shove their way into the small entryway, to see the same sight he saw.
“Lockwood Let the poor Detective in!” Lucy says, before making a path for you to step inside.
When you planted your feet into the home, Lucy maneuvers to shut the door behind you. The home wasn’t what you expected three agents under a small agency to have. To be quite frank, It was quite a bit nicer than you expected.
“Uhh, I’m not a detective any longer, actually.” you blurt out. It seemed as the three heads turned right towards you all at once with the same shocked expression.
They all turned to look at each other like they were having a private conversation with their eyes.
“Uh, then uh- Y/n What brings you here?” Lockwood asks with his soft puppy-dog-esq eyes.
That was probably the first time you’ve ever seen Lockwood stumble over his words.
“I needed a place to stay for the night? I can crash on a couch or whatever…” you pause swallowing, “I’d be leaving tomorrow by train, out to the countryside where my mother lives… since I’ve got no job, or job prospects.”
You start drawing circles with your feet. Waiting for their answer.
“Of course you can stay, for as long as you like, actually!” she said through gritted teeth, giving a side eye to the other agent you haven't met, with a curly black mop of hair on his head.
“Just don’t go giving her a job now.” he mumbles, pretty loudly, rolling his eyes, before walking off.
Before she gives him another glare, “Here, follow me, We should get you dried off, and you can sleep in the attic with me.”she says before dragging you up the stairs.
Lockwood gives you a sympathetic smile, before he's out of sight.
“Ignore George, he was the same way when I was employed here.” she mentions, before opening a door to a bathroom, giving you a towel. You start to squish the water out of your clothes.
“I’ll give you the Tour later.” she says, “c’mon I'll show you the attic.”
You got upstairs basically being dragged by Lucy.
Tumblr media
It had been a couple of hours since you had entered 35 Portland Row, and Lockwood was sitting in the library, trying to distract him from what just happened. He liked you, but he definitely didn't want you to get involved in all the mess that always seemed to trail behind the three who already lived there.
However, the real issue was, he didn't want you to go. He’d miss your banter too much, and especially your wit, and how you weren't charmed by his antics.
He could help but smile, just thinking about how fired up you had gotten over the conversations you've had.
He’s pulled from his thoughts, when he sees you entering slowly through the doorway.
“Hey.” you whisper.
“Hi.” Lockwood greets you, putting his book down, and sitting up straighter.
You didn't seem to be soaked anymore, and you were wearing an extremely long t-shirt, with some yellow fuzzy socks on your feet.
“I uh…” you pause, “I just wanted to thank you… and to say goodbye.” you say solemnly.
Lockwood was contemplating his next words as you sat down across from him.
“We’re the reason you got fired… isn't it?”
your eyes widen like a deer in headlights, as you gulp before choosing your next words.
“It’s my fault really… I shouldn’t have helped you…” you say with tears starting to form in your eyes, “There were other reasons too… but it doesn't matter now.”
You take a shaky breath before telling him, “Don’t blame yourself.”
He looks at you with sympathy, before, gently and slowly placing his hand on yours.
“I’ll be okay. My mother moved out to the countryside after my father… She probably needs my company anyways…” you say trying to avoid mentioning it.
You get up to your feet, feeling claustrophobic from the weight of talking about it boxing you in.
“Stay safe, Lockwood.” you say before heading out of the room, to bed.
Tumblr media
The next day, you creep out of Lucy’s bed, that you both had an almost sleepover in.
You couldn't remember the last time you had giggled like that in the early hours of the morning, out of your tired mind as she told you so many of her stories such as the ones of the Quill Kipps vs. Lockwood, or the funny mess ups of their agency, or even better, the failings of the Fittes team. You had even told her of some of the pranks you and James had done to Barnes, which he never could pin it on who did it.
You wished you could somehow stay close by, and become a friend of Lucy’s. You felt if you had the option, the two of you would be inseparable.
You leave a note for Lucy of your mailing address so the two of you could communicate when you had the time to write letters. You really wanted to say goodbye, but you knew it would just make it harder to leave someone you felt already so close too.
As soon as you headed downstairs, the smell of food filled your senses, and it was delightful.
You decided to skip breakfast, and just eat the snack you had stashed in your locker when you were employed instead. You didn’t want any trouble from George for staying around much longer, nor to face Lockwood. You didn’t think you could refuse to linger just to be close to him, which scared you.
After your father had died, things just shifted. Your mother didn't let people into the house, and rarely went out. She just shut down everything that used to make her eyes light up. For the hope that one day your father would come back. The same had probably happened to yourself. You made a choice to drown yourself in work, but now that was gone, you didn't know what you had anymore to keep you going, and not dwelling.
You had got your shoes on, that were still damp, before turning to the door staring at it for a good minute.
You were broken out of your thoughts, when someone spoke up, “You do know Lucy’s right?”
You turned around to see that It was no one other than Anthony Bloody Lockwood.
“What do you mean?” you ask confused.
“I mean,” he takes a step forward cautiously like you’d run if he moved too fast, “You could stay for as long as you like.”
You blink a few times, like if you blinked him away, you could maybe have unheard what you just heard.
“I mean, if you want to. You could even work your wage here. You're not an agent so I couldn’t employ you as one without the proper training, but you could do research with George, or even just…something?”
he pauses, taking a breath, “I just can't let you go home without trying to convince you to stay… even if it's only for a little while?”
You think on it for a moment, with him fidgeting with the silence. Flashes of your fathers warnings come back to you, but you ignore the caution. You had to do it… after that case the fire for being an agent wouldn't snuff itself out.
“I’ll make a deal with you, Lockwood. You train me as an agent, and I’ll stay. I’ll just do research until I get all my grade levels.” you say trying to strike a deal.
He looks conflicted, like there was an angel and devil on his shoulders, shouting at him all at once.
He must have decided to be the devil's advocate agreeing, “We have a deal. But any seriously dangerous cases are left to myself, Lucy and George, got it?”
You nod pretending to tip a hat to him that wasn't there.
He laughs, and it warms your heart.
You take off your damp shoes, as he guides you towards the kitchen.
He yells off towards the direction of the kitchen before the two of you enter, “Hey, George, we're going to need another plate for our new colleague, Y/n!”
Tumblr media
You had been staying there for a week by now, and you were ignoring the side eye George kept giving you, as you followed him like a lost puppy, to the library every day. He seemed just annoyed with your presence and the more you ignore his ignorance the more of a bad mood he seems to be in.
You were glad you at least had Lucy on your side completely, with her giving you the tour of the house, minus what was behind the mystery door, which she defended that it should be Lockwood to show you since it was his home. But she shared a lot of things with you, like a sister would, to confide in. It was nice to have that, since you never had any siblings.
Lockwood was iffy. You didn’t know exactly where he stood half the time. He still seemed conflicted and you couldn't pinpoint the whole reason why. You thought it was just his complex feelings on you becoming an agent, but you didn’t think that was the whole truth to it. He was one of the harder people to read.
During the week, nearing dusk, after Lucy, George and Lockwood had left for a case, you heard a knock at the door, as you were in the kitchen researching the next case they had lined up.
When you opened the door, you saw James, looking slightly stressed, holding a file folder in his hand.
“James? How did you-”
“-Find you? There was a rumour that started from Kate that you've been hanging around the George Karim kid, and that you were living here.” he smiles trying to be genuine, but you knew something was bothering him.
“Kate may be a gossip monger but she got it right this time…” you mention, before asking, “So why are you here, out of the blue, other than to check up on me?”
“Since you couldn't access your Dad’s file… I may have flirted with the files clerk to get it.” he says looking guilty, since he knew that was a reason why you got fired, for trying to access it.
“Don't worry it’s a copy, so you can keep it. Edith copied it for me… just now I'm going on a date with her because of you!” he half jokes trying to lighten the mood a bit before handing it to you.
“Do you want me to stay, or-”
“I think I need to face this myself.” you say, before he nods giving a small smile, taking his leave.
You looked down at the file like it was death itself.
You gulp, before closing the door, and heading to the library to read it.
Tumblr media
You were in utter shock. You couldn't believe the piece of paper in your hands and what it said. The pain you felt was even worse than before, causing you to choke up, like you couldn't breathe.
You hyper ventilated for a minute, before sobbing your eyes out.
It was his fault.
You could barely fathom all the anger you had inside of you, stretching its way out from the pit of your stomach over your heart.
You hated his guts. He destroyed everything you had hoped and dreamed for. For your father to come home. To even just have a father. But it was taken all away, and the hope was buried with him.
Now he was six feet under because he was slaughtered by a black market seller, trying to protect him because he wouldn't go. Your father had to have warned them. But it says that he insisted on staying, when your fathers death could have been prevented. If only he hadn’t stayed or convinced his colleague to stay.
Your father was dead, because of Anthony Lockwood.
You would never forgive him for this. You didn’t think you ever could.
He was the leader and he led someone into their death. An innocent man who had a family waiting for him to come home and to be reunited with.
The only thing you were given was an empty coffin to represent his body and all it symbolized was the complete emptiness you had from that day on.
There was no question, once you became a full fledged agent you had to get out of here.
Far away as possible to Lockwood and co, and Anthony Lockwood himself who destroyed everything you had held dear.

me: okay time to sleep
my brain: okay but holly and lucy both have serious issues revolving around control and losing control and we see that in their power struggle in thb and also holly's 'rabbit food' is absolutely a pattern of disordered eating based on her recent brush with death and controlling everything about herself down to her polished appearance and strict diet whereas lucy feels her found family is threatened by forces beyond her control (holly) while also struggling with the fact that her powers are becoming too much to handle

I will never see ANY of the rms as children- thats weird as hell in my eyes tbh, Like if it was even ‘canon’.
Something doesn’t sit right with me if you design a machine to look and react like an child only to have it doing dangerous jobs, 0 sense to me.

Don’t think I’m not still bitter about how Fox did Gotham in favor of Lethal Weapon, because I am.

Amy: I won't do it, not when--not when I've spent my entire life loving you. Laurie:...I mean, I only met you when you were twelve... Amy: You know what I meant. Laurie: You've spent more than half your life not knowing me. Amy: Oh my God, it's hyperbole! Laurie: Wait, did we meet as babies? I wouldn't remember, since I was a baby. Amy: Just shut up. Laurie: Maybe I'm a time-traveller! Amy: If you're a time-traveller, the future is doomed.

Imagine being Kipps in this moment. You’re 22, and you’ve got to work with a 15 year old who is not only taller than you and insisting he’s in charge of you but also says shit like this. The miracle of the L&co series is not that LW survives but that Kipps doesn’t kill him

Shoutout to all the series day ones of Colin and Penelope who liked them and their story for the very things people find complaints about:
Colin was so awkward with Marina. That scene had me cracking up and NOT for the awkward non-endgame and knowing that Penelope ends up with Colin.
Colin publically declares against being with Penelope. Yes, let him! I'm glad they kept it (and heightened the stakes, so it will be addressed for a bit longer than in the books)!
Penelope is meaner than in the books as Lady Whistledown. And it makes so much more sense. I'm so excited to see how this impacts their story, which at the very basis is about seeing someone for the sum of all their parts.
also: Peneloise fight and their fallout being present during the season of Polin Honestly, to me, Eloise didn't seem that important in their book story and I wanted more, so I like this change (and I know that her story takes place around the same time, so there might be more that got covered in that one). plus Eloise finding out about LW first feels like a natural progression for me in the intention of the show's story

I know this isn’t really relevant to the recent promo we’ve gotten (which I’m still swooning over, for the record), but I’ve been thinking about how some people in this fandom have been fussing over Pen having a potential suitor (or suitorS, we don’t really know) this season, and I don’t understand their complaints, I guess?
… like, I’m pretty sure that it’s meant to MIRROR Season 1.
(…see what I did there? ;)
There are multiple ways in which Colin and Penelope’s stories / situations have mirrored the other. They are not perfect mirrors (that would be dull), but they ARE similar and I truly believe that it’s intentional to reinforce both Polin’s compatibility and ultimately their empathy for the other.
A few examples:
Colin: is viewed as the “one-dimensional” easy-going, un-serious, charming brother who never rocks the boat; never gets angry.
Pen: is viewed as a shy, quiet, harmless wallflower who never steps out of line and is kind of a doormat.
As a result of the above perceptions:
Colin: is desperate for something to fill his time and energy the way his brothers have something, SO he impulsively courts and proposes marriage to a girl he barely knows to feel needed and wanted in a way that makes him feel mature; and he gets the validation he seeks from Marina, as it suits her needs (I don’t mean that in a derogatory way, she genuinely needed him to be desperate for validation to get a quick marriage). A heady feeling, someone relying on you and telling you that you are desperately needed…
Penelope: is desperate to feel a part of the ton in any way she can, because her and her family are tolerated at best, and heavily criticized at worst. So rather than suffering through the season, crushed, and always on the sidelines against her will, after choosing to start LW —perhaps on a whim, perhaps it was discovered and encouraged by chance like in the books— she “chooses” to hug the wall and not be noticed… (not at all a coping mechanism and a fear of rejection, amirite??) …and she eventually gets the acceptance and validation she seeks by having the ton hang off her every word as LW…. Again, a heady thing for a lonely 17-18 year old who wants to be heard and who craves acceptance, however she can get it.
Penelope: has to watch the man she’s in love with, one of the few people who listens to her and who she shows aspects of her true, (sometimes cutting self) with, court and eventually propose to a girl she knows is actively manipulating him.
She then (quickly, imperfectly and messily) interferes to spare Colin from the plot… without his input (after a failed first attempt to appeal to him, in her defense… and then the time limit became a problem).
Colin: quickly and imperfectly interferes in Jack’s ruby scheme in order to fix his own rashness, but also to spare the Featherington family… (without their input, it must be noted, even though he says he does it for them).
…And now in season 3, Colin will need to watch as Pen attempts to attract suitors, possibly while he watches with feelings of jealously if she has some success (Edit: Though I doubt it will get all the way to an engagement; too redundant)
(And this is nothing but speculation, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if Colin either discovers something about one of the suitors, or about another plot entirely and is forced to make a difficult decision regarding it, that impacts Penelope).
Penelope: writes things that can have a negative impact on or hurt people, sometimes for her own own comfort (LW), even if it’s not intentional.
Colin: says and does things that hurt others or that are misleading / obliviously harmful, sometimes for his own comfort (avoiding the needling of those men at the end of S2), even if it’s not intentional.
Penelope: has self esteem that has been in the TRASH since the beginning of the series - this poor girl hates herself, and has had it reinforced often (and likely from a young age) that her thoughts and opinions aren’t worth hearing, and that she is never enough (and is one of a few reasons why I find the “she wanted Colin for herself!” takes about the end of S1 pretty laughable)… so she hides behind LW. Colin is one of the only people she’s hinted to that she can be biting (Eloise gets glimpses of it), and I think the ONLY one she has hinted at that she has “grand dreams”
Colin: ALSO has self esteem that is pretty low, desperately seeking something that he thinks will make him feel whole and complete, the forgotten middle child (same, bro…), and he masks this uncertainty by flaunting a fake confidence and hiding behind his hobbies and being what everyone wants him to be… also he he can keep people from looking deeper… while simultaneously desperate to be seen by those around him. Pen is the only person he’s really hinted at that he’s unhappy when they discuss purpose.
EDIT: How could I forget?! BOTH are the third children in their family. Colin is the forgotten middle child, and Pen is the youngest, but both are criticized by their acting heads of their household (Anthony for Colin, Portia for Penelope), and criticized by their siblings. Penelope’s sisters brutally mock her often: her weight, her skin, her letter-writing, etc. Colin’s siblings clearly mean to just tease him, but it’s obvious how much their lack of interest in him as a person hurts him and makes him feel invisible and unwanted (my poor boy 🥺…)
Mirrors, mirrors, and more mirrors. Sometimes they are funhouse mirrors, the situations aren’t ever exact, there are nuances and specific context to each, but imo the similarities are very intentional.
The show is going out of its way to put these characters on more equal footing, and to have each of them make blunders in their lives and in the lives of others, knocked off their respective pedestals, to set them up to be like “wow, I get it, I get YOU and I choose YOU, with all the highs and all the lows” … and I LOVE it!! 🥹
People in this fandom tend to relate to either Penelope, Colin, (or sometimes both), and that’s awesome… but that doesn’t mean they don’t each have flaws. It also doesn’t have to become a “who hurt who more, who is more right?” - I am so uninterested in that: pain isn’t a competition.
What I AM interested and invested in is their growth, seperetly and together, and the removal of their masks to truly see and accept the other.
So yeah, y’all. It’s called a parallel, and I really hope we get loads of them in S3. 🥰
I honestly really welcome conversation and thoughts about this; I’m pretty new to the fandom, but unfortunately I have seen a lot of people (on tumblr in particular) be very “holier than thou” if they don’t agree on an interpretation, and it makes the fandom seem very unwelcoming and makes me nervous to even post things, which is pretty ridiculous. :/
Fandom gonna fandom, I guess. 🤷‍♀️ I just really love this show and this pairing and I’m dying for S3.

IM SORRY FOR SPREADING MISINFORMATION BUT SKULL WASN'T TOM SMITH
my bad people, i only now have deciphered whole Bickerstaff lore block and for easier discussion ive transcribed it. once again, sorry for misleading.
[tl;dr] in the first draft of TWS Tom Smith was an assistant to Bickerstaff who was buried with the bone mirror. Bickerstaff framed his own death by killing him. skull in the jar is Bickerstaff. it's no longer canon, books and tv series follow different narrative.
Tumblr media
Bickerstaff revelations
4. Basic story. Dodgy professor. Dark doings. Associates - one eaten by [rats], another went mad. Professor himself - disappeared? Or - killed by assistant...
ll How much do we know(?) (about his fake) at this point? Strange circumstances
6. Coffin opened. We think it's Bickerstaff. Holding odd gizmo [bone glass].
9. Scholar may suggest to [George] but he helps hunt for truth. Flatters him. (may genuinely think G could help him dig to bottom of it).
12. G has done some work on Bickerstaff already. When did he LIVE? assistants... who were they? Who buried him? Mystery...
Tumblr media
13b. GHOST-JAR: some revelations. About kind of work professor [Bickerstaff] did. Skull = Tom Smith =assistant. Not fully in knows, but can tell you some things. Worked at old sanitarium. Where one bloke worked - he died… eaten by rats. Professor required he'd hidden PAPERS then he (witnessed? withered?) (of? it?) skull claims professor died… buried him, as he wished with gizmo [bone glass]
Tumblr media
16-17. At Bick house we get psychic ?????? of events... assistant = involved there (he's Bick, but we don't realise), L sees stuff. Also -> ghost of rats bloke
Tumblr media
18. Get m/s: which will help scholar. Doesn't tell xxx Symbols. Drawing -> ???
20. LW finds proof in Fittes Archive, but doesn't read yet
23. Revelations - LW+Lucy read what they've got from archives
g-jar = Bickerstaff
ll [know] about what doing (+ what does to one who by) ---> george doing(?) it
Tumblr media
Revelation: LW+Lucy return home. Waiting for George. He doesn't show. Instead they look ??????? from Archives. Proves that object of [Bickerstaff] = scary indeed, also (scarier) that the skull isn't the innocent as … truth, but Bickerstaff himself. They realise that [George] + scholar are in to a ??? ? Also realise scholar's crime??

one day anon here. So good, right? I’m all for an adaptation making changes when necessary but the movie was too condensed/rushed. I also thought AH was a mismatch for Emma. The series worked so much better allowing the viewer to go along on the broader journey with the characters. I LOVED that the series included the garden maze scene which the movie did not, one of my fave moments. Thought the way the way the writers interspersed quotes and broke down the decades was laid out perfectly. I had seen LW in white lotus but his performance as dex shattered my heart. Every time tears flowed off his face you were wrecked along with him. Brilliant!
You've said everything so perfectly! I remember liking the movie when it came out but I never revisited it and as much as I enjoy Anne Hathaway's work, I don't think she was exactly the right choice for Emma. I spent too long trying not to get distracted by her pretend accent and couldn't connect to her character that much, which was a shame because I loved book Emma. Ambika Mod on the other hand was phenomenal, she completely understood the assignment and brought Emma to life in such an accurate way. As for LW, i think he was a perfect choice for Dex, with the way you cant help but feel for him even at his lowest points.
The fact that they turned it into a mini series was such a big advantage to a story like this one because as you said, it really allows the viewer to take this journey along with the characters and understand how much they had to work to earn their love. Which is why the ending ends up hitting you so much more.
My only tiny complaint is that they didnt include the iconic line "i love you so much, I just don't like you anymore"
