     tendou-senpai had always told him that managers were troves of information. perhaps that’s what had earned more of tobio’s attention as of late. part of him knows that, while hitoka is new to the likes of volleyball, there’s always something that would lead him to victory. of course, he does not feel threatened by karasuno in the slightest, but there is no information out there that he wouldn’t strive to reach. they had a practice match coming up, and he is doing his research under the guise of getting along with the manager. that said, he’s kept the charade going for long enough that he’s begun to feel a little more partial to hitoka than he’d hoped to; otherwise, he wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing now, helping her pick some flowers to brighten up her home. 

     “ flowers have what? languages? “  he scoffs, looking at the begonia that he had been eyeing. he isn’t sure that it really matters, especially if it’s not going to be for anyone but herself.  “ i don’t really speak floral. dunno if i can help with this. “

          there’s hellfire burning behind his skin, and his dull eyeless stare scorches anything in its path. if the eyes are the windows of the soul, then there’s nothing left to save him. before he even realizes that he’s once again been used as cannon fodder, the shot that was directed at the devil hunter connects with the blade embedded into his arm. after a moment’s thought, he tries to collect himself. the devil lifts the blade and looks himself over, trying to estimate the damage he’s sustained. in the midst of his mindless fit, there’s only one thing that keeps him restrained. makima. against his will, she’d thoroughly instructed him to keep the others safe.

            in his throat brews a grumble that he lets out once his arms bind about kobeni’s unprotected form. with projected ease, he lifts her in order to retreat. once they travel far enough to be safe, he makes sure to cautiously place her back onto the ground. he transitions into a more familiar form, the blades merging with what appear to be human-like limbs. he’s coated in dry blood, and he’s almost certain it’s not his. the diffuse pain that battered his body until not long ago subdues gradually.

          ‘  you can open your eyes now.  ’
