To start, there shall be a trend in these ships that boils down to “brooder and comforter.” One half of the couple is a bit (or maybe a lot) down on themselves and their partner is the warm embrace they need in life. The dynamic will forever and always be beautiful to me, just as much as “two pure sweethearts.”

Obanai x Mitsuri

Makes sense and 1000% compelled by it.

Obviously Obanai and Mitsuri fit that to a tee! Obanai is very clearly a broody boy and he states outright that Mitsuri saved him with her cheerfulness and smile. But it would be a massive disservice to the ship to ignore that Obanai also was Mitsuri's comforter in a way. She felt the way that he looked at her with affection whenever they were together which meant the world to her since she felt like it would be hard to love. They never judged each other and felt loved with one another and AAAAHHHHH HADKJHFLKAUHEILTHALEKTHKAEJG!

I know I've brought this up in the past but it bears repeating that I love this ship so much that I managed to work it into a college paper about depictions of (failed) romance in Japanese literature. Because, well, in a sense Obanai and Mitsuri's love wasn't successful. Let me share a bit of that essay to get my point across.

This mutual but unrecognized love is best described by the chapter title revealing Obanai’s backstory. The Japanese title is “hitsūna renjō” (悲痛な恋情) which I would translate as “a painful, miserable romance.” Mitsuri and Obanai’s feelings of self-loathing make their love a painful burden on their hearts. Even their confession is ultimately tragic, as both are in tears and on the cusp of death when their feelings come out.

Then again, the cycle of reincarnation allowed that love to continue and be acted upon. Still, this ship makes me VIBRATE with all the emotions. It's so unfair that Gotoge was able to invest me in this romance with only brief snippets and a small reassuring epilogue. And then the fandom just hammers the stake deeper into my heart. ObaMitsu. Beloved ship~!

Jellal x Erza

OOOOHHHHHH! Man, it's been forever and a half since I really watched Fairy Tail but Jerza is that ship that sticks with you (and Gajevy but that wasn't the ship asked for, now was it).

So much sense is made with the ship and it'll never not compel me.

Again, Jellal is the more blatant brooder but Erza has plenty of moments of hitting low points (and it's usually over Jellal). And again, they both act as a source of hope in each other's lives. These two knew each other as kids and they made strong impressions on each other clearly. I mean, Jellal made some strong impressions on many people for a variety of not good reasons... ANYWAYS! It makes so much sense that Erza is always holding out hope for Jellal because his turn to darkness back in the day was very out of the blue so deep down in her heart, she'd know that something wasn't quite right. And even as she loves him, Erza expects Jellal to take responsibility for his actions. You talked about it yourself when discussing this ship but with Jerza, their personal feelings don't immediately mean Jella's sins/crimes can be ignored. He has to work to right them and fix himself. Jellal changes not because he's browbeaten into it but because he wants to be better for Erza. And Jellal isn't the only one changing. Erza is able to open up and let herself wish a little more because the trauma of their history is slowly being healed. Their love is such a journey. Multiple times they're pulled apart before finding each other again. And each time they meet, they heal a little more, grow a little closer.

Lumiere x Secre

I won't say as much about these two as the others but I'm still a sucker for them!

In this case, Secre is the brooding soul while Lumiere is her comfort. She looked down on herself and her magic while Lumiere saw potential and inspiration. Lumiere gave Secre something to hope for and she gave him devotion. The way Secre's love endures over the centuries and she remembers to have hope from Lumiere's example is something that makes their love really special without them ever having to be in a relationship. We don't get Lumiere's perspective on Secre directly but the fact that he named his super special magic tool (the big spherical one) after her says quite a bit to me. She's important and special and helpful in Lumiere's eyes. Secre living on while Lumiere moves onto the afterlife is sad but he wishes her more happiness in a continuing future, even without him. It's an ending of separation but not of mourning and it's beautiful (even if I wish Lumiere could've stuck around).

Henry x Lorelei

UwU CC x OC time~!

I actually did read the fic where they meet a bit ago. It's just in my queue for reblogging. But ooooooohhhhhhh! I CAN GUSH HERE!

So I will be real, there is one detail of the ship that doesn't make sense to me. But that's Tabata's fault for making it that even low mana people feel drained by an extended exposure to Henry's mana draining. It's just unfair that really no one but Asta can safely be around him with his curse in place. So it's not on you. You made every other aspect of the ship wonderful. Henry definitely would fall for someone as openly sweet as Lorelei and her sense of whimsy is a wonderful complement to Henry's loneliness. The way he so shyly begins to talk to her is so in character and I think adding Lorelei to Henry's backstory helps explain why he's easily able to just talk to Yami and later Asta since he now has experience meeting someone new. Lorelei's Lucky Magic seems interesting (and fits in with David's Dice Magic) and well, I think it brought luck to both her and Henry. And do I even need to say it but this ship got me hooked with one fic. It may need more time in the microwave before it finds a permanent spot in my heart but... I'm digging the vibes already.

Nacht x Josele

YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

I’ve talked Nacsele before for the ask game but I’m gonna talk again!

GAAAAHHHH! The way Nacht always loved Josele and was content(?) to simply love her from afar... Josele harboring her love for Nacht when she felt he didn't love her back... It gets so messy when she's with Morgen because he truly did make her happier than words could say. But half of Josele's heart was with Nacht. And when they finally get together, after much heartache and soul searching and doubting, it's gorgeous. Nacht is so hesitant about the relationship that he doesn't even call Josele his girlfriend for a while because he still sees Josele as Morgen's love. Josele too was hesitant, not wanting to risk her happiness being destroyed again, but once she got a talking to from one of the Bulls, she embraced the chance to be with Nacht and helps him with his steps into the future.

AND I LOVE THEIR FUTURE TOGETHER! Josele never really stops mourning Morgen and the future they could've had. But she doesn't lose sight of the future she's attained with Nacht. She loves Nacht and the way he's able to forgive himself. And Nacht accepts that Josele will always have Morgen in her heart, he really wouldn't have it any other way. Nacht slowly but surely frees himself of his guilt and self-loathing to full embrace all the affection that Josele always had for him.

My ship... I love...

Song & Headcanon below the cut because of Black Clover Spoilers (though the anime)

The first song that came to mind when I saw this ask was "In Another Life (Goodbye)" by Jason Walker. The whole first verse really reminds me of when Secre had to say goodbye to Lumiere again at the end of the Elf Arc because she knows "that this was coming" but it doesn't make their goodbye any easier. Though to be fair this song is also very fitting for when he was alive as well--given that he was royalty because of Secre's weak magic making her into a sort of second-class citizen in the kingdom, they probably wouldn't have had the chance to pursue a romantic relationship then either and would have had to say goodbye not only to each other but to their chance at love. Ultimately, the only hope for these two is that they get a chance at happiness in another life--maybe an AU where he doesn't die and/or Secre doesn't get turned into a bird or where they're in the modern era with no rigid medieval caste system, somewhere that is not the canon since the canon universe was not kind to them.

On that note, here's an AU Headcanon for Secre and Lumiere in an alternate universe where Lumiere was just sealed in the Wizard King Statue in a similiar way to Secre being sealed as a bird, so he gets to survive post the Elf Arc:

Now free not only from his statue but also from the responsibilities of being next in line to the throne of the Clover Kingdom, Lumiere decides embrace the normal life of a commoner. He and Secre join the Black Bulls for a while, but when they retire, Lumiere sets out to travel around the kingdom learning about new and interesting kinds of magic with Secre as his companion. Eventually they decide to settle down in a quiet farming village in the middle of nowhere where they live a happy, domestic life as the village's healers, using their magical gifts to help the sick and injured townspeople.

Hiya anon!

I really love Lumiere x Secre/Nero! I know I don't write or talk about them very much (admittedly they're one of those ships I like but don't think about very much 😔. I think it's the "sweet, sunshine boy and the quiet, moon-vibes girl" dynamic that I love!

Once again, my memory is very fuzzy, but I think Lumiere showed Secre a different side of the world. One that she didn't get to see or think about very much. He showed her how bright, beautiful, and tolerant the world could be. While Secre kept Lumiere's expectations in check, supported him, and also shared his dream of making the world better.

I think the two balance each other out very well, they're kind of like Yin and Yang in a way. And I absolutely love that for them and, in a small shipper way, I wish that Lumiere hadn't died and got to be with Secre 😭!

How about Lumiere x Nero? And Oscar x Nero?

Makes sense, compels me!

I really did love the bond Lumiere and Secre shared. They had a tender connection that was gone too soon. I just adored that aside from all the research they did, Lumiere still had plenty of time to make her a pretty dress! While I personally may not get a romantic vibe from them, their circumstances can be read like a romantic tragedy. To be separated for centuries is just heartwrenching. So I understand why people ship them. I see Lumiere having a fondness for her like he would for Tetia. Maybe Secre's the little sister he wished he had since they had more in common while Tetia was occupied with Licht.

As for her relationship with Oscar, that definitely compels me! They're two nerds in love, and it's adorable! Oscar definitely has his similarities to Lumiere, which makes Nero feel comfortable around him. Poor Oscar is just so awkward since he's so inexperienced when it comes to wooing women. But Oscar is passionate about his work, and Nero is a devoted helper. They make a great team and would be good to each other. I can't get over the idea of Sally and Millie gossiping about them in the research lab together. It just feeds into my love of workplace romantic comedies.

“Hey!” A male voice yells. Secré’s head perks up as she turns her head. She sees none other than her friend Leopold running in her general direction. Well, she wouldn’t exactly word it as ‘friend’ seeing as they’ve only met one time before this.

She had transformed into her human form in front and Leopold happened to be near enough to see it. He was absolutely amazed by her bird form. He talked to her, to which she tried her best to stop, but in the end they ended up talking for a few hours. She thought he was pretty pleasant to be around considering he didn’t stress her out as much as other people. Still, that didn’t mean she wouldn’t describe him as loud and annoying.

He grabbed her arm as he was running by, Secré quickly began to run with him so she wouldn’t fall.

“Hey, Secré! It’s great seeing you again…! How have you been?” Leopold starts small talk as they’re running at full speed.

“Why exactly are we running away…?” 

Leopold gets a confused expression for a moment as if he didn’t know the reason himself. “Oh! It’s my sister. Yeah, we and my brother have to attend a fancy party thing…”

Secré wanted to talk more, but but was sort of difficult because she was starting to run out of breath. Leopold notices this and decides just picking her up would be the best choice, so he does just that.

“What are you doing?!” She muttered in shock. 

“You look tired, so I’m carrying you!”

She sighed softly and turned into a bird, she sat on Leo’s shoulder.

“Oh… Yeah, that works!”

Leopold takes a turn and runs a bit more before stopping and sitting down harshly. “Ugh… I’m out of breath. I think we lost her though.” He wipes his sleeve on his forehead.

Secré flies off and sat next to him in her human form. 

“So… A fancy party thing?”

Leopold nods, “Yeah, my brother is making my sister and she wants to make me go too because she doesn’t want to be the only one forced to go.”

“I see, that makes sense. Which noble family are you from?” Secré asks him. Leo chuckled to himself.

“Oh, I’m not a noble. I’m a royal. Leopold Vermillion.”

“…You’re a royal?” She questioned him.

He happily nods, “Yeah! Is that so surprising?”

She shrugs her shoulders, “I guess not. You’re just a lot more lively than a lot of other royalty.” 

Leopold laughs. “You should meet my sister! She’s like a wild animal! I mean… she practically is one!” He pauses for a few moments and his face softens. “Sorry for dragging you along with me, I just saw and thought, ‘Hey, it’s her!’” 

“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.” She replies.

He thinks for a moment. “Are you nobility? Your mana feels like one. Of course it wouldn’t matter to me whether you are or not, I’m just curious.”

“Uh, yeah. I used to be a nobility, but that was a long time ago.”

“Oh, I see… Well, I think you’re really cool! Sealing magic? I’ve never even heard of it before!”

‘Lumiere…’ 

“Are you alright?” Leopold asks with a bit of concern. “You spaced out for a moment.”

“Yes, I’m fine. You just reminded me of someone I used to know.” Secré answers. Leo smiles and tilts his head.

“Really? Were they cool?” He asks with a good amount of enthusiasm.

“…Yes. He was. He was kind and he was the first one who appreciated my abilities.” Secré reminisced on the sweet memory.

Leopold listened carefully and scoffed. “So does that make me only number 2?”

Secré is quiet for a moment and smiles gently. “Well, I’ve made a few friends since then and they’re good ones… but you’re probably the one that reminds me the most of him.”

“Hm… I’m glad. Anyway… Do you wanna go out sometime?” He asked out of the blue.

“What? Like on a date?”

Leopold happily nodded as if this was a normal thing. “Yeah! I think you’re gorgeous and fun to talk to. You’ve got unique magic and you’re super interesting to me.”

She thinks to herself for a few moments and nods. “I guess that’d be fine with me.”

Leo’s eyes light up. “Really? Thanks, Secré!”

She shook her head. “Please just call me Nero. I didn’t think we’d talk again so I gave you a name I didn’t use anymore, sorry.”

Leopold was still beaming, the news didn’t even seem to affect him. “Alright, Nero! How about we meet up here tomorrow at noon?”

Nero nods in agreement. “That sounds like a plan.” Leopold felt an overwhelming amount of pride.

“LEO!” A loud female voice yelled.

“Looks like Mereoleona is near… I’ll see you tomorrow, Nero!” Leopold waves and runs off.

Nero waves slightly as he leaves her view. ‘Leo may be similar to Lumiere, but they’re different people… I look forward to learning the differences between them.’

22. When do you think they were at their lowest?

during his time in prison, not only it was when he hit the rock bottom of his life as a fifteen-sixteen years old former disgraced noble with a criminal record and no place to return, but I like to think that this was also when he developed an obsessiveness with marie because being forced apart from her left him with more mental damage than he'd like to admit and would've probably done something very, very stupid after his jailbreak if yami didn't pick him up, hence why he described yami's offer as yami saving his life.

29. How do you think they would be as a parent? (and if they are a parent, how do you think they would be if they weren't?)

as a parent, gauche would grow softer and wiser in a similar fashion to sister theresa (also known as the old hag) and while protective as ever, he'd be a bit harsh with the oldest of his kids because he didn't want them to repeat his mistake... his attitude would ironically clash with marie (now a proud aunt) who grew up a lot like him in terms of doting the hell out of her brother's kids lol.

as an uncle to the bulls' children, he's up there in everyone's list when they need a break and a responsible babysitter but is also down there in the same list because most kids found him frightening and scary.

Zora

seriously though, I don't like it when people see zora as some playboy who's wearing a kinky outfit for the sake of attracting bitches when in reality it's a frightening image he created out of his father's view on the ideal magic knight to come out instead as a spiteful grim ripper sort of guy (batman style) who hunt the corrupted magic knights and kick some noble-royal's ass... that's not to mention that zora didn't really act like someone who gives two shits about dating or sex, just because he's snarky and sexy doesn't mean he's sleeping with people left and right!

so anyways, I see him as demisexual-ish bi.

29. How do you think they would be as a parent? (and if they are a parent, how do you think they would be if they weren't?)

as a parent, zora would be the kind of father who would give up on his dangerous job (magic knights in question) the second his child was born because he knew better than anyone else what it feels like having a parent who's dead set into achieving his dreams and saving people blindly to the point of nearly then fully neglecting his own child, so when zora became a parent he would dedicate everything to his kids and their happiness and future. I see him picking up a more safer but equally important job by co-creating a magic school with another bull for kids with unlucky origins so they had proper training whether they decided to become magic knights or not.

as an uncle to the bulls' children, this guy right here is not just one of the uncles he's the COOLEST uncle ever and is everyone's favorite uncle, all the others bulls are a little jealous of him, sometimes even the parents lol! ("darn it zora, stop being so damn cool!")

Nero

4.How many people I ship them with?

I ship secre with lumiere because it's bittersweet and heartbreaking, and nero with liebe because they're a match made in hell and it'd be so funny to imagine them bickering while setting on each side of asta's shoulders 😛

23. Future headcanon?

nero is... so many things, after years upon years of brooding without doing anything, and thanks to asta's influence, at same point nero'll retire magic knights to fully focus on embracing lumiere's dreams and make a name out of her by, 1) opening a magic tools workshop where she, with the help of other bulls, made tools to help people's every needs and took in students who are interested in magic tools inventing (think of witch hat atelier), and 2) writing a series of books based on her really long lifetime which not only told the REAL STORY of the first wizard king and the elves but also included a detailed birdview (ha) at clover kingdom over the span of five hundred years all the way to asta's story, and lastly 3) exploring the world every once and a while in long journeys to visit new places, often with luck's company who's always up for some adventure to beat powerful guys!

in short: old lady nero's so freaking amazing, she's an inventor, an author, an explorer, and I love her!
