Obscure Animation Subject #39: Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil
Originally posted on Twitter on March 18, 2023.
A computer animated series aimed at adults created, written and directed by Loren Bouchard, whose also the creator Home Movies (with Brendon Small), Bob's Burgers and Central Park (with Josh Gad and Nora Smith).
The show is a collaboration between Loren Bouchard, LLC (now Wilo Productions), Fluid Animation and Williams Street, and aired on Cartoon Network via the Adult Swim programming block from September 9 to November 11, 2007. A pilot did air on October 30, 2005 though.
The predecessor of Little Demon, the show follows the titular 21-year-old Lucy, who lives in San Francisco and has been ordained by her father, the devil, to fulfill her destiny as the Antichrist, whether she likes it or not.
Along the way she meets up with a DJ named Jesús, who turns out to be the Second Coming of the messiah and the two begin dating from the first episode. Meanwhile, her father tries different schemes in his quest to take over the world with the help of his "advocate," Becky.
At the same time a group of "Special Clergy," two priests and a nun, are on a mission from the Vatican to find and destroy Lucy. Sounds pretty bizarre, and yet done well thanks to the subversion the show uses in its universe, having the god is good and devil is bad trope flipped.
This show has lots of shock value and offensive material, but it is executed well like another show similar to this, Moral Orel. This show has false social commentary, and by that I mean the commentary is obviously wrong, but it's meant to be taken that way and be funny.
It's weird to describe that but trust me its solid. Animation isn't good but the characters and story direction are nice. Sometimes the edgy humor can be too much and not all the stories are clean, but still an enjoyable show. Its flawed and not perfect, but its worth watching.
Definitely recommend it if you handle shock humor and twist some storylines in the Bible, it’s unique with its animation (although subpar), humor and subversion. Loren Bouchard is quite an animation master giving us great show after great show. Wonder how its successor is doing…

I liked Little Demon better the first time when it was called Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil.

Lucy the Daughter of the Devil is on HBO Max. This show came out in the early 2000's and only lasted one season. All evidence of this show even existing was erased, and recalling it felt like a fever dream.

Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil #3: “Dildo Factory” | September 17, 2007 - 12:15AM | S01E03
I did keep watching Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil, but I think all my goodwill for the show was used up here. I remember reserving my final judgment of the series for this episode, which was described by me to by a person who had privileged information about the series that this episode was “so good”. I watched it. I hated it. I wrote the show off. I’m still writing it off.
This person’s opinions became, to me, suspect after that. I remember one other time he called something “so good” and it was a demonstrably unfunny Weekend Update bit where Kate McKinnon played the woman who attempted to restore that fresco of Jesus and got internet famous for doing a bad job. All she did was bug her eyes out and say “give me money!” in an insulting accent. It was remarkably pathetic. I realized after these incidents that this guy’s opinions were probably based more on who he wanted to stay friends with more than anything else.
This episode is about Satan opening a dildo factory, and they do a half-hearted Willy Wonka parody. It’s sorta pathetic that the original boat ride sequence in Willy Wonka is genuinely creepier and more subversive-feeling than anything they do here. There’s also pathetically staged action where Satan clubs a girl (a LITTLE girl, too, yikes much?) for stealing a motor at Lucy’s behest, and this somehow causes mass panic which triggers a series of fatal accidents that end with the factory being exploded. It looks dumb. The animation does nothing to sell the action going on whatsoever.
The B-story is that Jesus is doing a Simon of the Desert in Central Park (I think) and also wants Lucy to make a Dildo using his likeness. Nothing in this episode is good or satisfying or funny or even particularly novel. It all just sucks shit. Man, I hate this fucking show.
