“i’m sorry, yeah.” you’re trying to part your anger and your anxiety, but the latter seems to win anyway. you swallow, struggling to meet his eyes, and let air out through your nose, long and shuddering as you turn. you’re stiff as you grab your phone, walking toward the hallway. “if you need anything…” you stop yourself as if remembering how grating your voice seems to be for him right now, biting your lip to keep back more of the kindness you found so vital.

you step away without another word, leaving bucky in silence and a sick self-satisfaction with it. his shoulders drop and he closes his eyes, sighing deeply. it doesn’t take long for the fulfillment to feel sour, his mind glimpsing back to the contortion of your features.

•Hawk literally will do anything for this kid, literally anything. He goes as far as blowing off training to do stuff that involves the baby.

•What do you mean they are sick? Coughing and bowing snot bubbles and won't stop crying? Hawk is skipping practice to go pick up the babys prescription at the drug store. He's even going to grab a little toy, maybe a new stuffed animal for them while he's at it. He's going as fast as he can to grab the stuff so Reader isn't all alone with a crying sick baby.

•Hawk is the kind of dad to buy stuffed animals all the time. He can't stop getting them for the little bugger. When he goes to golf-n -stuff he can't help but get a stuffed animal with his tickets, even if Reader isn't there he will get one without thinking about it. Talking about drugstores, he's definitely that “dad” who always grabs a stuffed animal from one of those $5 bins in the store. It's just something about seeing the baby's face light up everytime he brings them a new one that makes his heart melt. There room/nursery is covered with them.

•Hawk was secrecy scared that the baby might be afraid of him because of his scar. He's seen to many movies where kids are scared of people with scars, both facial and body ones. He thought about going as far as buying make up or stealing some from his mom to cover his lip scar, but he chickens out. When he holds the baby for the first time and they just smile at him, maybe even giggle at him, he’s sold. I think his heart breaks open just a little when they first touch his scar, they don’t scream or cry, they just pat at his top lip and smile.

•Loves dates where the baby gets to come with them. Sometimes he has to be specific with “No you don’t have to try and find a babysitter, I want to take BOTH of you out.” He never gets over the smile Reader has when he says it, because he knows she feels a little insecure about being a single mom sometimes. But he loves them both and he never wants her to feel like that, because he wants her, and her baby.

•He’s the guy who takes them out to a nice dinner at a nice restaurant. If anyone looks at them weird or side eyes the baby, Hawk is glaring right back at them. No one is going to look at his kid like that, parents can go out and eat to. He's bouncing them on his leg if they get fussy or upset at dinner. Don't tell Reader but he def let's them have a finger full of chocolate sauce from his dessert when she's not looking.

•Talking about food, when they are allowed to start trying new foods, Hawk is ready and excited. You will probably never see someone so excited about watching a baby get covered in spaghetti. Definitely does the thing where he takes whipped cream and shots some in his mouth then let’s the baby mimic him and put some in their mouth. Laughs so hard when they stuff their little hands in their mouth trying to keep the sweet cream in their mouth. Sticky fingers for days.

Daniel thinks that it’s extremely honorable that Hawk didn’t cause a huge scene over Reader having a baby, explaining quickly about how it was in the 80s. Amanda thinks it’s sweet to watch him with the baby, Amanda may have a issue with buying stuff for the baby and sending it to Reader. Amanda likes baby’s like a lot. Johnny try’s to be supportive but, he literally knows jack shit about raising kids. (Insert Robby side eyeing him the whole time)

•He loves it when Reader brings the baby to the dojo. Not just for practice, but he likes it when he gets to see the two of them playing outside. He loves watching them play with the grass outside he dojo or watching Reader point out different fish in the pond. Hawk is slowly starting to enjoy the peace and quite after the dojo war ends. Reader and baby are a plus.

Been thinking about Re:Dracula and how it's really difficult to do a truly accurate adaptation without just reading the book word for word in an audio format, and about how two big things I see in movie and other visually based adaptations are how they cut down the plot and they cut down the cast size.

Thinking about one that does it like: Mina, Johnathan, Lucy, Quincey, Van Helsing

Combine roles between Mina and Seward, and between Quincey and Arthur.

Mina is the medical student who studied under Van Helsing (emphasizes her role as the Smart One, lets Van Helsing see her more as an apprentice rather than a child to patronize, also gets in some Victorian gender role drama as Mina is a (highly qualified but still) woman going into a scientific/medical field dominated by men, she doesn't own an asylum though so alas no Renfield... unless... hmm, anyway one reason Jonathan is so eager to get that promotion is to help Mina finish medical school)

Give Quincey Arthur's most notable traits of being rich and having dogs, but also the most important traits of being an American cowboy from Texas who tells stories and plays up the persona for fun. And has a gun. Give Lucy other less important suitors in a flashback or something but make it clear these two Really Have Something

Mina becomes Lucy's best friend and doctor, maybe with Lucy's mother being dismissive of Mina as a woman trying to go into the medical field but accepting of her as an unpaid nurse for Lucy, Mina receives the news about Johnathan while Lucy seems to have gotten better but she asks Lucy's fiance to keep an eye on her just in case, and to contact her old professor if needed.

Harkers get married on the spot as god intended.

While Mina's gone, Van Helsing is unfortunately still a misogynist and doesn't handle Lucy and her mother as well as he could have, Quincey is just deferring to the apparent expert, Lucy dies and proceeds to Bloof, Van Helsing handles that roughly the same way as before but with only one sidekick this time.

Mina and Johnathan return upon receiving the news and Van Helsing tries to convince Mina that vampires are a thing the same way he did with Seward but with more "ah but you don't need to know all that because you're a woman" so she doesn't buy it until she connects the dots with Johnathan's experience and reads his journal, proceeds to tell him everything in there was real and gets Quincey to help them catch up on what happened with Lucy and to catch him up on what Dracula seems to be up to.

They go to Van Helsing for advice, he comes up with an arrangement that keeps Mina busy with something important but "safe" while he and the lads go out breaking and entering. Quincey shoots at a bat, Dracula gets Mina, Johnathan gets his anime transformation, Van Helsing burns Mina with something holy, there's an argument between the guys that gets cut off by Mina breaking down and Johnathan shooing the others out to comfort her, but Quincey sleeps in the hall outside.

Dracula runs away but forgets to turn off Mina's psychic "find your phone" settings, Mina is the Train Fiend, Van Helsing is confronted with how his efforts have led to further pain and realizes maybe they'll be better off if he steps back into a mentor rather than leader role, Quincey arms everyone and takes care of them by throwing money around and trying to be the level headed dependable comforting one, Mina can tell when Dracula is paying attention to her and this is the only time when hypnosis is necessary, the chase happens roughly as in canon.

Mina and Van Helsing go up to the castle to fight the Weird Sisters, maybe it's a bit more active this time, maybe Mina manages to channel Dracula's command in a way that saves them from the girlies but they realize that she's more vampiric than ever and killing Dracula is even more urgent.

Quincey and Johnathan follow Dracula by boat or by horse, whichever one is more exciting. They bond and it's low key kinda bisexual ngl but if anything comes of that it's a promise to talk to Mina once it's all over and they're safe again, they generally plan wistfully for the future, Johnathan feels a chill in sync with when Mina uses the Dracula power, Quincey suggests a spar to practice and get out their energy, maybe to add more interest here one of Dracula's scouts finds them and says there's a group of Dracula's servants that want to be free and will help them fight when they catch up.

The final battle goes a little differently, Mina puts herself in a barrier circle to protect Van Helsing from the possibility of her going vampiric but keeps a gun to provide ranged aid, Quincey and Johnathan roll up to Dracula's entourage and their secret allies back them up in the fight, Mina and Van Helsing provide cover fire and maybe make it seem like there's way more armed reinforcements up here to scare off the servants, the boys tag team Dracula as god intended, the gang reunites.

If I want to be evil and make good on those death flags, then Quincey dies (but not before seeing Mina's recovery and also getting kissed on the cheek by both Harkers at the same time) and the Harkers' first son is named after him. If I want to spare Quincey, then Van Helsing dies and his last moments are spent telling the gang that he's proud of them, and especially telling Mina that she's the brightest student he's ever had and he only wishes he could live to see her success but something about watching over them all from heaven idk. I guess the Harkers would name their first son Abraham then lmao, and maybe I'd give Quincey a lasting injury from the fight so he uses mobility aids in the future, and they'd definitely stay as a close knit trio forever. One might even call them roommates. See the thing is Quincey dying is canon and would bring more proper tragedy but also I don't want to kill him...

She's the kind of partner that would make sure you're eating properly every. Whether it's through text or in person. If in person she and depending on how busy you two are at the time, she would suggest you eat something together.

When it comes to date, she prefers more private dates like staying home and watching something or to a book cafe. She is open to trying out different kinds of dates since she loves experiencing her partners interests.

Which speaking of, she will take notes and research the things her partner enjoys. She does expect them to do the same as well.

While she does love the rest of the Phantom Thieves, she also knows they are very intense. So, it would take some time for her to introduce them to her partner. Another reason also is that she'd want to make sure the relationship can last more than a couple of weeks too, in case things get awkward.

Once she's ready to introduce everyone, she'd want to do it in a way that doesn't get her partner overwhelmed with how intense Ryuji can be or how weird Yusuke can get.

Being in a relationship with her will be awkward and difficult in the start due to her lack of experience having friends, let alone a partner. In the start, she can come off as distant since she doesn't want to seem overbearing or pushy in any way.

She tries her best and even asks her friends for advice even when it's just something Futaba saw in a dating sim.

Ann is the opposite of Makoto. She likes going out and exploring new cafes, shops, and anywhere else she can find. When she can afford it, she likes to go to anime cafes even when she's not a fan because she likes how cute the food is.

At the start of the relationship, she gets so excited to go on dates that she'll forget to get her partners inputs of what they would want to. She also forgets to plan ahead and will spring surprise dates on them when she sees something fun they could do together.

If her partner likes going out like her and surprise dates, then dates with her can go for hours since you both will keep seeing something new to do.

If they like planning dates and more private indoor dates, she'll start keeping an ear out for upcoming events they can plan together. It'll take a while for her to get used to indoor dates, but she will enjoy just laying around watching movies and eating snacks with face masks.

She also likes couples dates. Meaning her partner will definitely meet AkiraRen first if he has a partner at that time. That also extends to the other Phantom Thieves if they also are dating someone at the time.

Once you meet one of them on a couple's date, she'll offer them to meet the other Phantom Thieves. It'll he more low-key, like when Makoto takes you to them. Probably at Leblanc since it's their usual hang out and a nice comfortable atmosphere for everyone.

Being in a relationship with Ann will take a lot of work on both parts. They'll both have to learn how to communicate better what they want and what they expect from their partners. Especially if they're a lot more mellow than Ann. If they are, she will ask people like Makoto and Yusuke for more quiet and calm dates since their interests are more inclined to that.

RIDERS OF BERK | HTTYD SERIES | HICCUP X ASTRID

Blog Post Series : HICCUP X ASTRID

Title : Animal House

Ep/Season : Episode 3, Season 1 (Riders of Berk)

Premise:

The animals on Berk, the sheep, yak & chickens have yet to accustom themselves to the new occupants… dragons. As such, they’re not producing enough produce in retaliation to the fact. Hiccup is charged w the arduous job to synergise the situation before a horrible storms arrives. Yet a second plot-line catches my eye instead…

Romantic Development :

While it isn’t explicitly out there, and when push comes to shove, we know Hiccup & Astrid like each other. Though they are pretty low-key / inexpressive about their feelings it’s clear somethings brewing beneath the surface. Hiccup will become chief & there is no better chieftess to choose from their tribe and age-group than Astrid. Though neither of them were ever forced to choose each other by virtue of the facts.

Apart from some fraction-of-a-second glances, mostly by Hiccup, their relationship doesn’t fully bloom until much later on, but episodes like these just show you what these two were made of and why their destinies were perfect to begin with.

The episode opens w the two of them racing down a snow peaked mountain. Both equally competitive and playful. This is a side you don’t often see of Astrid. She’s mostly serious, strong and defensive. She’s obviously relaxed around Hiccup, which is why she smiles more, feels free to be herself and even dares to plays loose w the rules when they’re alone.

An accident causes an avalanche to hurl at them. Though they could’ve easily flown away, Toothless’s tail gets stuck and so, Hiccup is stuck. [Side note: I really appreciate how the technology of Toothless’s tail & Hiccup’s inventions develop as their characters do. And you even watch Hiccup tinker around and build a rep w his creations. It’s nice to watch hard work pay off, which you won’t get to see unfold just by watching the films].

Astrid swoop down to try and save them, but they fall into a ravine and while snow pours in to bury them, they seem to have entered a cavity and are quite untouched. Astrid calls out for Hiccup, who immediately holds her. This is where I melt. Though small, considered “unmanly” and even a runt in Viking culture, Hiccup is more man than many romantic leads written. It isn’t the size of his person that makes him big, but the size of his heart.

He immediately takes Astrid into his arms when she’s cold and afraid, though he must equally be. And this tender affection and compassion he has towards people, particularly her, draws her towards him more than any “pseudo-macho” facade could. He always puts the needs of others before his own.

They soon discover that it is because of their dragons that they’re safe, understanding now the ingrained loyalty instilled within the two-way dragon-Viking companionship.

This kinda proves that the timeline of this series kindles quickly after the 1st movie, because it is clear they’re not completely familiar w their dragons yet.

Excited, they convey their new discovery to their friends.

Astrid & Hiccup both love dragons. They have a passion for their pets and an unmistakable love for the beast. The only thing they aren’t sure about yet, are their feelings for each other. And are awkward about them if ever brought up.

My favourite part about the episode and why it is one of my early favourites is because this is the first time you see both Hiccup and Astrid play pivotal roles in dealing w Berk’s affairs. We know they’ll grow into the roles one day, but this is sorta where it all starts.

While it is Hiccups charge to get the animals to work together, Astrid, unlike the other teens is more proactive in helping him. She even tries to allay his concerns, and from hereon you will see that her support and presence brings a lot of encouragement and strength to Hiccup as the series progresses.

She is also always seen by his side, which is a sign of support for him and a sign of safety for her. We know she is a fearless warrior, but what I love about her is that she has a feminine side that only Hiccup gets to see. She trusts him.

This episode was lovely. Not only because of Hicstrid, but also because of how Stoic handles Hiccup’s first failure. He doesn’t berate him about it. He lets it slide knowing that his son tried his best. He encourages him. He is still there for him.

It was also great to see Toothless solve the issue by saving the sheep and then taking the initiative to nudge the sheep towards the warm circle causing all the other animals to do likewise. This display Toothless’s intelligence which is what differentiates him from many other dragons.

HTTYD is essentially a movie about Hiccup and Toothless, and a great deal about their friendship and shared characteristics. Toothless is clearly suited to being a leader like Hiccup is.

The circle of warmth they created to protect their humans was an initiative Toothless started and just like Hiccup and Astrid, every decision they make is for the betterment of others.

I’m pretty impressed w how the creators of HTTYD managed to play w the nuances of each of these strong character traits and make them as refined as they are. Beneath this franchise is a whole lot of good character building and character mirroring which is fantastic for fans like me who love dissecting these little details.

Hicstrid is an unmatched couple in the DreamWorks Universe for me.

Well I'm sick of being burdened with knowledge. TL;DR. Why is there a minor working for a known studio that brands itself as an adult animation studio? Where is the money going?

So everyone knows that project about the mermaid and the chef. Of course you do. It's been heavily advertised, it's even got dangling keys of being set in the PH. Low bar, but the animation industry in the Philippines is so open to fresh talent and projects and what not. So you look into it. Then you get hit by the fact that it's produced mostly by Americans, but it's PROBABLY Filipino-Americans, that's a thing, they're good pioneers. That's fine. Most of them are Asian-Americans anyway. Flag #1.

I'm known to be a contrarian. I hate on everything almost by default, I have contempt over too much of the local art scene for focusing on anime styles and highly rendered stuff too much. And so I kept myself from hating too much because I may not be giving them a chance. So I stepped back and observed what the project had in store. But over time it felt odd. Why does this studio commission so much promotional art? I can understand 3 pieces, but I couldn't even count how much they had exactly. It was a sheer amount. Some from known Filipino and Filipino-American artists, to other artists. But it was almost too derivative. Almost like they had just as much context as everyone else. You have the formula of the dynamic, which by standard should have been a yellow or red flag, of the usual. The characters in a vague dynamic of predator and prey and it's sapphic. But that's about it. And the constant reminder of it being WLW and Filipino. It was mildly annoying (and I did my best to just leave it be), but the sheer amount of artwork got me questioning whether they actually devoted enough budget for the production of the animation. Didn't even know they already had a Patreon feeding into the project, and that they werent a studio attempting to pitch for some funding. Flag #2.

I spent months of circling whether I was being too much of a hater. I spent time thinking whether they actually do animate, until they posted a short scene breakdown recently a few weeks back. At least some work is going into it. I was going to wait it out until something proved it existed or didn't a la Schrodinger. Run to the latest news of a teaser for the project. Mildly excited, mostly relieved that it was probably going to be more public because I feel like I'd have sleepless nights if I thought too hard about it. Still not fully out. Sure. More breakdowns, more scenes. More info coming soon.

But then I found out that it turns out that there was a minor on the crew. Which I found odd for a studio who wanted to uphold this image of a professional studio. Then I realized that it was even worse, because the project is supposed to be for adults and the entire studio is branded as an Adult Animation Studio. At this point I don't think it matters if it's haterism. That is troubling me deeply. Why do you have a minor on the crew? It doesn't matter if they're close to becoming an adult or whatever man, it's just super weird now. Your entire marketing hinged on the project being Adult. It's just so unprofessional at best and horrifying at most. Flag #3. It's just too much.

Conclusion is I really don't want to pick a fight with more studios. I'm sick of it. I'm just really bewildered, also not even the head of the studio's graduated from university yet. For the longest time it felt like a disaster waiting to happen. Which was fine to watch and see if it would fail, but they got a minor involved.

Hi Jenn. After all these years agenting, do you still find it exciting and challenging (in a good way) or do you sometimes have to find new ways to keep it from becoming mundane at times? Hope I'm asking this right. I guess what I mean is, what advice do you have for others in the publishing field - agents, editors, authors - or even any job (!) to keep things fresh and stimulating without becoming dull and repetitive?

I find it exciting and challenging, and very rarely would I characterize it as dull or repetitive or mundane, actually. (Even theoretically "dull" activities like data entry or whatever -- while maybe ANNOYING sometimes -- are still of short enough duration that they aren't really any of those other things!)

There's just always some new project, challenge, puzzle to figure out, and one day rarely looks just like the next. (I guess it might from an outside perspective -- like "okkkkkay, she's sat at her computer for 8 hours... the next day she's sat at her computer for 8 hours..." these seem the same! BUT I PROMISE THEY ARE DIFFERENT!)

So where MY problem comes in is not in boredom or anything like that -- it's more: A) PANIC because no matter how much I do, there's literally always more to do. I can't get to inbox zero, the inbox doesn't have a bottom. I can't finish a to-do list this week, or any week, things are just getting added as fast as I can do them. and B) PROCRASTINATION - like right now is my "day off" but I started to low-key panic about the things I have to do. Like, I have to -- HAVE TO!!! -- do my taxes and clean my house, because my mom is coming in a couple of days and the house is a wreck AND I know while she's here I won't have time to do my taxes and whatever whatever -- so instead I'm SCREWING AROUND ON TUMBLR. -- so B is both a result of, and cause of, A. That's my struggle. (And if anyone has advice, hmu.)

I guess my advice if you DO have a repetitive job is, try and break it up into smaller bits, and do other things in between? Like, I can't give notes on multiple books in a row, or read multiple contracts in a row -- I can do ONE, and then I have to do something entirely different, using a different part of my brain. Like I can edit a book, then update social media -- then I can do a contract, but then go outside and just read a published book -- then I can look at queries, etc. But if I tried just editing a book or reading contracts or looking at queries all day long, I'd die.

So if you are a writer, maybe you have dedicated time that you know you can be head down, butt in chair, just writing your face off -- a time when you are by yourself and don't have to worry about feeding any children or animals or anything like that. Focus on that for that dedicated stretch of time -- no looking at email or the news. Then take a break that is totally different -- walk the dog! Make an omelette! Call your mom! -- then, go back to work, but this time, you are editing something you wrote last week. Then, give yourself a treat, have a cup of tea, look at social media. Then, go back to work, but this time you are doing admin -- updating your website, or getting shit together for an event next week, or whatever.

ALSO, I got this piece of advice from a productivity expert (paraphrasing, and also, advice that I should actually take myself but I just remembered about it right now!) Basically, rather than having a lengthy to-do list that feels daunting -- your daily to-do list should be THREE ITEMS. Pick three. ONLY. THREE.

Then when you do those three things, you're done for the day -- you can give yourself a gold star and stop -- OR, you can try for another three.

I do find that when I actually focus -- like, OK, I have ONE HOUR to do this task and only this task, head down, timer on -- or OK, I am going to sit here and do THREE AGENDA ITEMS -- then I actually do them. Whereas if I have a nebulous long list, it's much harder to do!

Go with the flow like the autumn koi and swim away without a care in the world

I should strive to be more like the autumn koi in the Moonlit Choral Brook. They follow the rhythm of the river like it’s a dance, always moving forward. I wonder how the world looks from their point of view through the crystal clear water.

We’re in Sunburst Villa for a fishing tourney involving autumn koi obviously. They’re kinda like the village’s mascot, so it’s no exaggeration to say that they’re everywhere. I don’t mind, I think koi are pretty, especially the autumn koi with its warm and vibrant colors.

Along with the journey, there’s MellowCon, an anime convention where Alexi and Emma are attending. Of course, I got a couple signed prints from them, one of them having been commissioned from Cheyenne, who regretfully couldn’t make it. Luckily, the next convention Alexi’s going to is about half an hour away from where Cheyenne lives and they have plans to meet up with some old college friends during that weekend.

We’re also hanging out with Jamie and the Linnea Squad for some sightseeing. Jamie wanted to treat the Linnea Squad to a vacation when she found out an old friend and her traveling party was in the area, so she introduced them to us.

The fishing tourney has been fun in a chill, low-key kind of way. I always prefer events more of that pace than something big and extravagant. Sure, those can be fun, but they also can be draining. For me, fishing is about taking it easy, so it makes sense for it to be a low stakes kind of thing. It would be nice to catch lots of huge fish and get a nice trophy, but that’s not a priority for me. I’m just here for the cool sea creatures.

MellowCon was also fun, although it’s not really my scene, so I didn’t really spend a lot of time there. To be honest, I really only hung around Alexi and Emma because I’m not familiar with the other shows and games over there. Really, I only know a very small handful of characters they play, specifically from Pillars of Stone and Flame. Still, it was fun looking around and seeing all the art and cosplay.

At least I was able to get into the conversations revolving around Pillars. Along with Emma and Alexi, it seems like a lot of the English VAs really kicked off their careers with Pillars - and most of them happen to be fans of the game too. The new update’s coming next week with a new exploration area and story chapter, both which I’m hyped for.

Along with the excitement for the new update, we also talked a bit about that dev, the one who was memed in an interview for coming off as a snob — and rightfully so, to be honest. Apparently, she made a spectacle of herself in a podcast by being sort of passive aggressive towards the fanbase. From my understanding based on translations, she doesn’t like the criticism towards the writing, except she kinda blows it out of proportion.

I mean, I kinda get it, but at the same time those criticisms are usually valid. I got interested in Pillars for the story and exploration, and while I am invested, I find the writing to be uneven at times. In other words, when it’s good, it can be really good, but when it’s bad, it falls flat. At least, in my opinion, the story has improved a lot since the beginning, though pacing seems to be its weak spot.

The podcast also goes a bit into Constellation Matrix, which is another game produced by the same company as Pillars, and that was what prompted the dev’s rant as she worked on both. I don’t know too much about Constellation Matrix’s lore, but there’s a lot of comparisons made between the character Fury and Pillar’s October - who happens to be played by Emma - in terms of their character arcs being similar.

From the gist of it, Fury was a fan favorite, at least until the writers butchered her character arc so badly that she died an anticlimactic death. In other words, she was a well written character with a lot of potential to take the story in another direction. Fans speculated that the writers didn’t want to commit or something, so they decided to kill her off and then act like she never existed. Of course, fans protested and the phrase “offed like Fury” became a thing. Even the company and the devs poke fun at it occasionally.

I mean, imagine screwing up so badly that you sort of became a cultural phenomenon, like, damn. I can see the parallels between Fury and October, which are likely intentional, though I think I have faith in Pillars to not pull an “offed like Fury” with October. I mean, October’s second character story chapter’s coming out in the new update, so she’s not disappearing from the spotlight anytime soon. Really, the only thing I’m worried about at this point is the pacing, especially later on when the story begins to focus on other characters.

And on an unsurprising note, that dev isn’t a fan of “offed by Fury” and went off on a tangent on why it was necessary for Fury to die and people were too dense understand what it meant for the narrative or something. I didn’t understand most of it, but she seemed really defensive over that for some reason, which is what people are memeing over because it really is ridiculous.

Aside from hyping about Pillars, the biggest highlight of MellowCon for me was seeing Alexi and Emma with their fans. Both of them never imagined that they’d make it as voice actors, not with the way their families discouraged them from pursuing it. And now here they are, living the life they never imagined would be possible if they hadn’t taken the plunge. It really is amazing to see.

Alexi had a pleasant surprise when her brother showed up with his friends to support her. She mentioned that out of her family, she has a difficult relationship with her oldest brother and their father after the accident. The way she describes it, they see her as damaged goods, a traumatized amputee who should be ashamed to be alive. Sounds harsh, but that’s just the sad reality of how some people are.

While things are far from ideal between Alexi and her brother, at least they’re talking. It’s sad that they used to be close, only for him to pull away when she needed his support the most. She said the worst thing was that he was being dishonest, always making up excuses to justify treating her like she’s less of a person. And when her voice acting career took off, she felt that his “support” was purely superficial, as in he only cared when it benefitted him.

As for her father, not only he looks down on her, he also thinks that voice acting is not a real job. His response to her getting more recognition as a voice actor was basically along the lines of, “Do these people have anything better to do? Aren’t they tired of her yet?” How rude.

Alexi said she wasn’t super close to him as they didn’t really have a lot in common to begin with, but they got along pretty well back then. She described him as old fashioned, the kind of person who thinks that people should just develop a thick skin and get over it. Basically, although he’d never say it outright, he’s ashamed of having a disabled and mentally ill daughter.

By now, Alexi’s accepted that they’ll never see eye to eye. She admits that she can be difficult, though I don’t think that’s an excuse for him to cast her aside like that. Sounds like the kind of person where there’s just no winning with them. When you’re at your lowest, they make fun of you for being weak. And then when you stand up for yourself, they complain that you’re unreasonable and stuck up. Sometimes you just have to say “Fuck it, I’m not bending over backwards just to get your approval.” Alexi’s been through a lot of shit and she doesn’t have time to deal with people like that. Good for her!

Then we met up with Jamie and her friends, the Linnea Squad and Caerwyn’s adventuring party. Linnea and her comrades are still traveling with Jamie from time to time, mainly because they need a mentor figure to look up to. They’re still at large, so going off on their own isn’t the best option.

Linnea’s still trying to reason with Jet and Gabe, but it seems like her pleas go in one ear and out the other. There’s no point in forcing them to talk if they refuse to, so she has no choice but to let it go. She and the others are still hoping for a reconciliation, but knowing how stubborn and hardheaded their friend is, they’re gonna need a lot of patience before things settle down. As long as he’s not causing trouble, and potentially putting the rest of the squad at risk, Jamie advises that it’s best to leave him alone for now. Sounds like a tricky situation, though I think the squad’s handling it well.

As for Caerwyn, she’s an elf mage who’s adventuring with her apprentice mage Salka, and Kalle, a warrior from the Glacial Mountains. They were planning to travel further up north, but they encountered problems at the Hallowed Pass. There was another member, a healer mage they picked up during their travels who later parted ways not too long ago, right before the group headed towards the Hallowed Past.

The ordeal the party experienced over there caused a considerable setback, but since they’re not on a strict schedule, it’s not that big of a deal. Basically, there were a bunch of curses and monsters acting haywire to the point that the roads became inaccessible. Caerwyn said it was just their luck that their healer mage just left because he happened to have an innate immunity to some of those curses, which would’ve made cleaning up a lot more easier. Still, it wasn’t anything that Caerwyn couldn’t handle.

While Caerwyn and Salka took care of the curses and flying monsters, Kalle handled the beasts and whatever physical obstacles came their way. The whole cleanup took nearly four days and they succeeded in reopening those routes, a feat that Caerwyn said would be considered impossible for most mages and warriors. I don’t think she’s exaggerating, otherwise, I think Jamie would’ve called her out.

Those four days really tested their stamina, especially for Kalle, so they have to take it easy for a while before going back on the road. Since they have to cross the mountains and blizzard season is approaching, which can get deadly in these parts, the group figured that it’s not worth risking their necks out there. Along with overexertion, Kalle also sustained some injuries while fighting, so he had been on strict bed rest orders.

Caerwyn and Salka are almost fully recovered while he still has to take it slow. And of course, he’s gone a bit stir crazy from being in bed all the time, but at the same time too tired to really do anything. That can be a drag sometimes. At least he was well enough to join us on the tourney for a bit and catch some autumn koi.

Since there’s no way of knowing when’s the next time they’ll cross paths again, Jamie and Caerwyn have a lot of catching up to do. Jamie says Caerwyn doesn’t have the best sense of time because she has a long life, so Salka often has to keep her in line or else she’d be taking them on detour after detour. After all, she may have all the time in the world, but for us humans, we don’t really have that luxury.

Salka has explored the village in and out, so she’s become our tour guide. The three of them tend to do their own things when they’re staying somewhere for a while. Caerwyn likes to look for shops that sell magic stuff, according to her, shadier a place looks, the more likely you are to find some treasure. Jamie wasn’t exaggerating when she said that Caerwyn’s a walking tome on magic. While she’s off doing that, Salka’s exploring the shops and replenishing on supplies, and Kalle’s running around helping the locals out.

There’s a cafe that’s not too far from the tourney, so it’s become our hangout spot. Not only the pastries are good, they also have these cute autumn koi rice cakes for the occasion. It’s kinda become our thing to end the night with rice cakes, green tea, and a couple card games.

The nightlife is pretty active here, so Caerwyn and Salka have been using these game nights to seek out a new member to join their party. As their journey goes on, they realize that they need a healer, preferably a licensed medic. The guy who left, Emlyn, wasn’t a medic, but he was a mage who Caerwyn considers a genius. Not only he’s immune to most curses, which is considered unusual, he can easily heal ailments that are difficult for even the most experienced mages. And the worst part, according to Caerwyn, instead of putting his gifts to good use, he spent most of his life living with regrets. Based on her tone, I wonder if she’s speaking from experience.

Before going off their separate ways, Emlyn left a notebook on various spells and medicinal herbs for common ailments, which has been a godsend for them. While that alone has been helping them get by, Caerwyn’s open to recruiting a medic just to be safe. According to her and Jamie, those kinds of mages are considered to be very niche, which is why it’s hard for them to find one. Basically, mages aren’t very common, and licensed ones, especially in the medical field, are very few and far between. Emlyn happened to be a unique case, so their replacement has some big shoes to fill.

Well, like Caerwyn says, there’s no rush. It’s not healthy to live life burdened by worries and regrets. Sure, there are things that are outside your control, but don’t let that stop you from living. Although Caerwyn’s made a name for herself as a powerful mage, she says she can’t help but feel like she hasn’t done enough, which is why she’s on this adventure now, to take it slow and really get to know her companions before she inevitably outlives them like most of her friends.

After getting burned out with the incident at the pass, she said seeing the autumn koi swimming in the river reminded her why she and Salka set out on this journey in the first place. Instead of a definite endpoint, they’re just going with the flow like the koi, and they’re content with that. Even if you decide to stop moving, the currents will take you along anyway whether you like it or not, so you might as well let it carry you away. You’ll end up somewhere, and you have the choice of exploring your surroundings or just burying your head in the sand. Like I said before, sounds like Caerwyn’s speaking from experience.

It won’t be long before we all go our separate ways again. Jamie hopes it won’t be too long before she and Caerwyn cross paths again. There may be no guarantees, but considering how much Jamie travels, Caerwyn bets that they’ll meet up again in the future, and hopefully introduce her to their medic. From how Jamie, Salka, and Kalle talk about her, Caerwyn is an interesting figure, one who I really hope to meet again in the future if fate allows.

So you know the animagus (spelling? Idk) people in Harry potter? I wanted to do a fic about the brothers finding out that MC is an animagus which happens to be their favourite animal and how they would react.

For those of you who don't know, an animagus is a parson that is able to transform into an animal. They were originally normal in some cases and had a potion to give them this ability or they could have just been born like it.

Lucifer

This was something he didn't even think to look at when doing your background check before you came to the devildom because like, you're human??? and haven't heard of magic??? so how?!?!

So imagine his suprise to see you as a small doggo (breed is up to you) just casually chilling in your room with the human you nowhere in sight

He literally has to do a double take and then he pinches the bridge of he nose and sighs in exasperation. At this point he doesn't really know its you and is about to hunt you down to give you a good scolding when suddenly the dog transforms into you.

Actually catches him of guard for once because hello?? But he realises what's going on pretty quickly amd tell you off for not telling him sooner

Teases the fuck out of you now he does know and looked smug af once when giving you a collar. Low key loves this about you and secretly wants you in your dog form in his office when he's working to he can headpat the stress away

When you phone starts ringing he is *insert surprised pikachu face* because its right there in his room. Turns around for a split second and when he looks back at the crow just to see you sitting there smiling at him he has a mini heart attack

"Y-ya can't just s-sneak up on me like that, human! And- where'd the crow go??"

💖 What made you start writing?

Short answer: I was desperate for more Princess Tutu content.

Very long answer:

It is early July of 2010. I am at college, taking the Intro to Bio class during a summer session because the stupid class kept getting full up before my sign up window during the normal school year. I am feeling pretty down at the time -- that undiagnosed, unmedicated ADHD low key depressive funk. I was also watching a lot of anime at the time and decided to check out Princess Tutu, which looked like a sweet and fun pick me up.

By the end of the first episode, my mood had lifted. By the end of the series (26 episodes total) my entire brain chemistry had been altered. Princess Tutu was my new favorite show of all time (in some ways it still is). I rewatched it numerous times. I showed it to as many people as I could get to stay sitting after I told them it was called Princess Tutu. I bought the DVD box set for myself and watched all the special features.

Christmas break of 2010 I was home and rewatched the show once again. But it wasn't enough. I needed more. I could feel myself falling back into that funk. I went to the TvTropes page for Princess Tutu and clicked on the one tab I hadn't looked at: Fanfic Recs. I didn't read fanfic at the time, hadn't really ever before, and had the vague notion of it being kind of an embarrassing thing, but I needed more Princess Tutu.

One of the recommendations was The Heart of Everything by gemkazoni. I stayed up until 4am reading that fic (it is 84k long). Once again my brain chemistry was changed. I reread it only a couple days later and then created an FFN account expressly for the purposes of leaving a review on that fic (I didn't know guest reviews were a thing). And so of course after a stellar introduction like that I continued to read more and more fanfic.

Exactly 2 weeks later I was in the shower when the idea for a character study popped into my head. I kept running through the words over and over in my head until I decided I had to write them down and of course once I wrote them down I had to post it. It got 7 hits in the first hour which felt like the most exciting thing that had ever happened. And the rest is history.

I've not been in a very writerly headspace lately I confess. I've had a lot of ideas for AUs, but haven't really sat down to write anything in a while. One thing that I would like to do is circle back to the OFMD Galavant AU to write a couple more scenes so it ends on a happy place for them and then I can post it as a sort of time skip/snippet collection even if I don't write a full AU for it.

Hi friend Ask Box edition!!! While watching your AMV "The Mark," I was really struck by how different the two Akira's are. In the Devilman anime, Akira doesn't fight back much and protects a bunny, (which seems weird to me because the best way to protect a bunny is to let it run away, but maybe that's the point? He's trying, ineffectively, to protect something that doesn't need protection in the way he's offering). In Violence Jack, he's like, ripping people humans apart and reveling in blood. What do you think of Akira's changing relationship to violence? Why does he change so quickly? Is it just Amon's influence? What do you think Nagai-san is saying about the relationship among masculinity, patriarchy, and violence?

For the sake of sanity, let's assume the timeline is Devilman manga -> Devilman Lady + many timeloops until they defeat God -> the divine and the void fic series -> Violence Jack. Thank you!!!!

@badass-at-cuddling Oh yes, Akira goes through quite the transformation when it comes to his relationship with violence when he merges with Amon!

Yeah, in the Devilman The Birth OVA Akira is being over protective of the bunny cause he saw the other two bunnies' dead bodies inside the hutch and isn't wanting the bullies to hurt or kill the last bunny. Its also to show that despite him being a cowardly guy and very conflict avoidant, he is willing to stand up for others when the chips are done, which shows why he is able to overcome Amon's will enough to be in the driver's seat.

Of course that doesn't mean Amon's demoniac nature doesn't affect Akira and Akira's new found enjoyment of violence and fighting comes from that influence. And honestly I think that stays with him even after he's dead in DML's case and reborn in VJ, its just a part of him now. In my hc he and Amon(especially in DML) are almost so merged together that you don't always know where one begins and the other ends.

Its interesting to think what Go Nagai was saying about violence especially from a masculine/patriarchal view, as at first Akira is rewarded for him beating up the bullies by Miki

And her family are brushing off Akira's sudden change of character as him just being a young man getting out as much fight out of him (Boys being boys and all)

That's cause the violence he had committed by beating up the bullies wasn't horrifying, it appears heroic cause the bullies had it coming for haressing Akira and Miki, and Akira mostly just bruised them up, no-one was killed. So its easy to brush off any concerns they might have about Akira and that kind low key violence is normal to them.

And they haven't seen how into fighting Akira has become like Ryo has. Ryo has a front row seat to seeing how blood thirsty Akira has become, especially when he's in his devilman form.

Basically being in battle and feeling all of the adrenaline has changed Akira, now he knows what it means to kill someone, he can't go back to being the innocent conflict avoidant boy he used to be. Now he knows how many problems can be solved by violence. And also Akira has come to enjoy the rush of battle that even facing something possibly more powerful than he is excites him. Even after he got defeated and overwhelmed in volume four, knowing that Satan is the top dog (before he knows it was Ryo all along) makes him want to fight them, he's losing himself to the thrill of battle.

The Makimuras have no idea about that side about Akira until Ryo does the broadcast, even though he is killing demons in it, the violence isn't sexy or heroic looking, its just horrific and they are forced to face the same horrors Ryo once(when he still thought he was human) had to witness. and at first, scared, they reject him until he is able to convince that he is still human.

Which I think that's the point Go Nagai is talking about how war and violence warps people, turning them into the worst version of themselves, much how like fear made the mob rationalize themselves that they were justified in murder two teenagers and a little boy cause a demon once lived in their house. But also how most normal people are okay with violence as long they don't have to deal with the reality of it, its upsetting and scary to see and hear of it.

Like how people can be convinced that launching wars in developing countries are okay if there is a justified reason for it and you don't see the destruction it causes to the civilians of said developing country. But being faced with the reality of war makes those justifications harder to swallow, a reason why the war in Vietnam was so unpopular, the media coverage at the time was the first time normal people got to see how horrifying war truly was.

But back to Akira. By the time Devilman Lady or Violence Jack rolls around, Akira has learned to master himself when it comes to his violence, he still commits it and enjoys himself in battle, more so in VJ, but there is more of a purpose behind it rather than a desire for fighting.

In Devilman Lady, Akira fights to protect Jun and then fights alongside Satan to take down the Devilman verse God, the biggest oppressor of the Devilman verse(and Demon Lord Dante verse)

In Violence Jack, Akira/Jack fights the murderous gangs and the Slum King so the people of Kanto can see that they can stand up to their oppressors and fight back, and also cause he wants to free Ryo/Satan from his self-hatred. Of course, though he is embodiment of Chaos and Death, so he might enjoy his job a little too much XDD thought thankfully all those he kills are horrible bastards who are in need of a good stabbing.

So basically Akira/Jack is the hero/inspiration the Hellish place Kanto has become needs not wants, the world is rough and cruel and it needs someone just as rough but nicer to the innocent to help solve it! XD

I H*ecking Hate Sonic Frontiers

How do I go decades defending Sonic endlessly only to end up in a Twilight Zone episode where everyone not only DOESN’T think this is a new low for the series, but also that it’s one of the best Sonic games ever?! Dude Forces came out coming on 6 years ago and everyone rightfully trashed on that game’s shallow, lazy level design and complete lack of originality riddled with recycled assets.

But the series goes on hiatus for 5 years and comes out with another batch of 30 levels that ALL flat out suck. Forces had 30 levels and 5 of them were green hill and 5 of them were chemical plant. But in frontiers 10 of them are green hill and 8 are Chemical Plant. It’s not even just that they’re reusing these level themes AGAIN. But that they’re less than a minute long, and are so shallow and worthless that they don’t even try to reach the incredibly muted “highs” of Forces. Frontiers levels unironically make Forces look like an exciting ambitious game in comparison. How do you have such an embarassing showing and get this jaded fanbase on your side? 

Well the game’s fans will simply respond those 30 levels aren’t the core of the game. Which, fair enough. The majority of the game takes place in the "open zones” But oh wait, the level design is EVEN WORSE here! Go play literally other sonic game, and it’ll feel like an actual adventure. But frontiers is just running around in an empty open world touching enough 5 second automatic levels floating in the sky until you’ve gotten the arbitrary number of progression maguffins. The only thing breaking this gameplay loop up is combat, and challenges. Well the combat is one step removed from the nicktoons unite type combat seen in sonic boom rise of lyric. Give sonic a couple flashy animations attached to attacks that are all functionaly identical, and people are tricked into thinking it’s more than just a mindless button masher. Sure some of the bigger enemy encounters have different things going on. But every single one of them is so heavily scripted that even the odd decent battle, is boring to fight even a 2nd time. This carries over to the super sonic battles, which just show all you need is a lightshow and tryhard music for people to ignore the fact that nothing is happening. First of all the ENTIRE point of super Sonic battles is that you have to beat the boss before you run out of rings, which always start at 50. You’re supposed to be picking up rings as you fight so you won’t die as they’re constantly draining. But in frontiers you can just run in circles and fill up your ring meter to 400 before the fight and have no worry of running out. And the mechanics are no different than when you’re fighting a low level grunt enemy, it’s the EXACT SAME button mash combat seen everywhere else. Oh yeah the parry requires no timing btw. Meaning the optimal strat is to stand there holding parry waiting for the enemy to hit you, which triggers your counter attack, which is your strongest hitting single move. And when the boss is half dead it triggers some light show that doesn’t even effect the fight whatsoever. Just put more moving lights on the screen and now it’s cooler. Jiggle the keys in front of babies face to keep it entertained! There’s one bit in the third boss where you have to grab a constantly moving blade and aim it back at the boss to hit it. Literally the only time the game ever asks you to do anything at all and it immediately stuns the boss and lets you button mash it to death.

And the challenges I can’t believe don’t get hated on. How do so many people go 20 years hating every sonic game after sa2 but when a sonic game gives you 60 seconds to hold left in a hamster wheel for 2 seconds NOW you’re a fan again? Oh maybe the first hamster wheel didn’t do it for you. You weren’t convinced until they copy pasted the wheel 4 more times. (The variety is very lacking) Bet you guys were really pogging the 3rd time it tested your ability to hold the parry button down...? Or how about those apparently super cool moments where it gives you 70 seconds to run somewhere that only takes 8 seconds to reach, with no obstacles or anything between the start and finish. Nah it must be the 7th time you did a walking puzzle that’s slightly more complex than the same ones seen in sonic boom rise of lyric, but much less complex than the club penguin minigame using the same concept.

Don’t even get me started on the story and fishing minigame. I could make another wall of text about both but this has gone on long enough so I’ll keep it short. But the story is exhaustingly boring and pretentious. Ian Flynn clearly attempted to fix the sorry state the previous writers left the series in. But he was given nothing to work with. The game takes place on a nondescript island that doesn’t resemble anything sonic related at all, and clearly no actual budget for cutscenes. Meaning all he can do is just awkwardly reference past games about as smoothly as a family guy cutaway gag, to sloppily establish pretty much everything is canon. But that just does more damage to the series continunity than ever. There was a very clear intended reboot, ignoring that makes it all a complete mess. Sonic’s voice direction makes him sound like a tired old man who doesn’t want to do it anymore. One of the only major events in the story is that Sonic is getting weaker and weaker as he saves his friends and uncovers the history of the island. Already lame enough that it doesn’t fit in with gameplay at all. Sonic could be about to keel over in the cutscene, barely able to even walk anymore, but the second it fades out into gameplay you’re gonna be running at full speed like nothing’s wrong. Worse than that though is the second Sonic can’t take it anymore and it becomes a real problem, it’s cured in the same cutscene. This shows me the mandates that say Sonic can never lose, and if he’s ever behind must immediately regain the upper hand, is stil in place. Meaning no matter how they dress it up, any dramatic moments are going to be as impactful as the null space bit in forces. Y’know that bit where sonic’s sucked into the void of nothingness forever only to escape literally 20 seconds later effortlessly. Except at least that played into a style over substance appeal and was very quick instead of dragged out throughout the entire game as a major plot point. Even Eggman’s character is unfun to watch here. Usually an inherently charming, charismac character, reduced to a direction that’s dreadfully melodramatic, and frankly kind of gross.

The fishing is just playing into *it’s not a good game if it doesn’t have fishing* and also *ecks dee big the cat*  memes and has no depth and is actually so broken you can fish for ten minutes and be overpowered for the rest of the game. And mechanically it’s THE most embarassing fishing minigame ever put into a game. Sonic fans will go *oh well it’s just an optional side mode who cares*. Bro that’s not an excuse, everybody’s golf has a more robust fishing system all around. It’s being outclassed by a GOLFING game. Comparisons don’t get better against anything else. Especially not when Ocarina of Time had a pretty decent fishing hole back in 1998 on the n64.  Like look, I’m not expecting an actual simulator here, fishing is usually very simple in many of the games its featured in (which is a LOT of games these days). But this flat out NOT a fishing minigame. It’s literally just functionally a loot box. You don’t have to aim for the fish, there’s no care given to what kind of fish would be in the same ecosystem, THERE’S NO DUPLICATES.... You press A, press A again, and you pull out a random object, half the time not even a fish. You very quickly realize that it’s just giving you items down a list until you’ve gotten them all. You’re not fishing, you’re opening loot boxes with a fishing skin. And to make absolutely sure every corner of this game is devoid of any substance whatsoever...The coins you have to find to be able to pay for fishing....are given to you in the hundreds for free every few nights during an event that’s impossible to fail.

This isn’t the extent of my complaints, that’s enough though. I’ve literally played every single sonic game and frontiers is the only one I absolutely hated. Free Riders on Kinect is a better experience by a long shot. This game is the definition of “My expectations were low but holy f*rick!” How did perception on this game go from “This game looks like trash” when it was first shown off to being THE most universally well recieved game in the entire series?!?? NOTHING CHANGED. The world still sucks, the level design sucks, the story is stupid and boring....Every single thing it does is just something that was hated in Forces, or taken from MUCH better games and done as bad as possible. Why do people like this game? I literally say “I’m begging you to explain why you like this game” to people and they can’t do it. “oh it’s the best sonic game in years!” BRO IT’S THE ONLY SONIC GAME IN YEARS THIS SERIES IS DEAD. WE’VE WASTED 10 YEARS ON FORCES AND FRONTIERS. Forces took 4 years to make for some reason, frontiers took another 5. They’re going to be updating forces with likely filler worthless content for the next year instead of making another game. This series was putting out better content when they were releasing 2-3 games a year every year. It’s crystal clear to me that Sonic boom did an obscene amount of damage to Sega financially and they were out of money for Sonic. The last few years were literally just desperate fund raising to make enough money to even finish frontiers. How are people so pessimistic and down on the series to say there hasn’t been anything good since sa2, yet this bottom of the barrel unity asset flip garbage got EVERYONE back????? Like dude even other games I flat out hate, which mind you is honestly not that many in the grand scheme of the industry...I at least understand why a certain audience might like it.  Even my most despized games I can go *well this audience is into it and I understand why their taste makes them find it enjoyable and that’s fine* But there’s NOTHING here. Frontiers is EVERYTHING people hate about Forces/modern sonic and more. The music isn’t even good. There’s a select few tracks that are cool but a major majority of the ost is the cyberspace levels. Kind of hard to make any stand out iconic tracks worthy of Sonic’s musical legacy when you have to write 30 songs that play over the same 40 second long green hill zone level over and over again.

Developer Interview: Level Designer

Have you ever wondered how Goblin Stone levels were created? If so, then today we are taking a deep dive into the exciting world of level design with our Level Designer/Game Scripter, Daniel. Get ready for some insider tips, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and a whole lot of inspiration! So buckle up and let's get started on this Designer Devblog!

Daniel is responsible for creating content for game levels using Unity 3D and implementing environmental events and level loops to make the world come to life. 

Let’s hear what he has to say about his work.

How would you describe your experience working in Orc Chop Games as Level Designer/Game Scripter?

It was quite daunting at first, as this is my first time working in a game design related role. The responsibilities were fresh to me, and because I had no previous experience, I had to learn new things from scratch and experiment. To be honest it was quite tough, but it was also fun.

What inspired you to become a level designer?

What is your thought process when designing a level? Where do you find inspiration?

One thing I usually do is to look at my surroundings. You’d be surprised that even the things on your desk can make an interesting level with a little imagination and creativity.

Imagine this scenario: Think of a miniature version of your character. Your character is at the bottom of your desk, and the goal is for your character to reach the top of your desk.

How will your character accomplish this goal? What obstacles will your character have to go through along the way? This is the fun part, because you as a level designer have to solve these problems.

Maybe your character can climb up a wire dangling on your desk. Or maybe there are other objects in your room that are low enough for your character to reach, and then those objects can be used to reach other objects. This is the mental exercise that I usually do on a daily basis.

The level beats depict the major events and activities that the player will engage in, as well as how these will be spaced out and timed throughout your level.

How do you work collaboratively with developer, artist, producer and community manager in Orc Chop Games?

Communication is key. In times when I need a software tool that will help me work more efficiently, I ask the developers for it. If I need guidance on how the level should look like and how it can be easy on the eyes, I ask the artists. If the community managers need clarification on some features in the game, I can answer because I’ve conceptualized some of those features as well. And I give updates to the producer so that he can keep track of my progress.

As both time management and organization are important skills within this profession, what techniques do you find useful when working on Goblin Stone?

Learning to seek help. I understand that I don’t have the best ideas or the best judgement for my levels. Which is why it is important to perceive how others see your work. Most of my teammates know a lot more about the game than me, so it is important for me to learn not to shy away and ask for guidance.

What's the hardest part of designing levels for Goblin Stone?

It’s one thing to make a good level, it’s another thing to make a good level using recycled resources. Assets take time, and coding takes time. So to reduce work loads on other departments, there will be times where you have to make do with assets you already have. I’ve had cutscenes where I plug in animations from a Human to a character of a totally different race, and somehow made it work. It really pays off to be resourceful.

Before we wrap up this interview, is there anything you'd like to say to our community and aspiring level/game designers?

Thank you so much for supporting our game. It means so much to us that you support our game the way you do, and I am extremely grateful for that.

As for the aspiring game designers/level designers out there, just understand that if you yearn to be in game design, my advice for you is to get out there and interact with other people in the industry. Never underestimate the power of connections, because you’ll never know who can help you get an opportunity.

To be really honest with you, I was lucky to even be here. It’s not an easy industry to get into, but if your passion is strong enough, you’d be surprised at how far that passion gets you. It’s hard but not impossible.
