BOOK REVIEW: The Stand-In by Lily Chu

SYNOPSIS (sourced from the back of the book): Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly "friendly" boss, and yes she still hasn't gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she's healthy, she's (somewhat) happy, and she's (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie's world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in. The catch? Gracie will have to be escorted by Sam, the most attractive—and infuriating—man Gracie's ever met. If it means getting the money she needs for her mother, Gracie's in. Soon Gracie moves into a world of luxury she never knew existed. But resisting Sam, and playing the role of an elegant movie star, proves more difficult than she ever imagined—especially when she learns the real reason Fangli so desperately needs her help. In the end all the lists in the world won't be able to help Gracie keep up this elaborate ruse without losing herself...and her heart.

Characters: 4/5 I found them very interesting! There were at times where they fell a little flat, or didn't feel consistent, which is the only reason I leave a 4 instead of a 5 for them. Gracie Reed makes a very good main character, but the supporting cast could have been a little stronger at times.

Plot: 4/5 If you go into this expecting a fluffy but sexy romcom-esque book, then that's definitely what you're getting!! I loved it personally, and even if at times it felt a little forced it didn't overall take away from the magic of the book.

Writing Style: 4/5 I loved reading Lily Chu's writing! It felt like I was really in the head of Gracie Reed and I enjoy that from a book told from this perspective. There were times where the storytelling felt a little forced, or didn't flow very evenly, which is the only reason I don't give it a 5.

Overall, a definite recommend!!

VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.

Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)
