Things that are underappreciated abt baljeets portrayal as a ‘nerd’

-people like him. He’s bullied by buford sure but the other characters who arent his friends are just like ‘hey its baljeet from school. Hi baljeet :)’ like they Dont care. Irving doesnt seem to have much reaction to him and wendy even seems excited that they’re under the mistletoe in the christmas episode. At most the fireside girls (minus ginger) find him boring but they dont hate or bully him or owt. He’s just A Guy and buford is the only person who makes a big deal out of his nerd status cos its not actually a big deal

-there are a few jokes about him not being very strong but he’s not unfit. He enjoys sports and is always seen participating in them. Theres no jokes about him being last to be picked on a team or comically bad at it, he’s just…there. Playing with the other kids. He even uses his smarts to help him with certain sports which is a rlly neat touch

-this is rlly subjective but i love when the show leans into that kind of bill nye ‘cool nerd’ energy with him. Like what he’s doing is REALLY lame but its SO lame it becomes cool in its own way. Like riding a unicycle or using a protractor to play baseball or unironically dabbing on someone in 2020. Imo baljeet is at his most powerful when the writers channel those vibes onto him. Baljeets the kinda guy to show up to the school disco in suspenders and a bow tie and rock it simply with his sheer audacity

-he’s at his coolest when he stops worrying. Baljeets coolest accomplishments- ‘mainstream cool’ not the aforementioned nerdy cool- are always stuff he does when he lets his guard down and stops TRYING to be cool. 90% of the time baljeet actively tries to be cool or suave or whatever he just completely embarrasses himself (look to any time he’s flirted with isabella) but when he’s acting for himself like in bully bromance breakup or the baljeatles he kind of fucking rocks????? Like wtf. Dude climbed a mountain because he had an adrenaline rush. Thats sick as fuck. He didnt perform gimme a grade trying to look badass, he did it because he was genuinely angry and no longer gave a shit what anyone thought. He even says it in the song- ‘i wont be told how to vent’- this is a 100% genuine expression of emotion with no outside motivation. And its one of his coolest moments in the show. Everytime baljeet tries to be cool its kind of tragic because he IS just not when he tries too hard

-baljeet is a nerd specifically because of his autistic coded rigid thinking. He’s not like that for no reason or because his parents are stereotypically abusive- he’s like this because he needs strict rules to understand the world around him. Baljeet needs to know he’s good enough. Grades give him a simple ‘yes or no’ answer to that question. Therefore: he needs to get good grades to be good enough. Its how he makes sense of the world and pulling that system out from under him throw him into a breakdown. We see this in the baljeatles, again with his schedule in bubble buddies and this black and white view of the world gives him extreme anxiety over decision making in primal perry. That last plot point is especially interesting to me because baljeet has shown signs of an anxiety disorder before that all tie into this world view. That one wrong move can cause his life to spiral and so he NEEDS the rules to keep him safe. This is probably why he stayed with buford (y’know before they became friends). He was a nerd and buford was a bully. Thats a binary he can understand. And the rules here state that the bully picks on the nerd. He may not always like the rules but he does follow them. His nerdiness has actual depth and reasoning behind it thats often overlooked

-baljeet does not shy away from things he is bad at. When he accidentally signed up for a rock and roll camp, he didnt simply leave because he cant get his head around rock. He sat through the whole course, learnt to play that damn electric guitar and turned up for his concert. Yes sometimes he can be scared or defeatist- but he always comes back from it. He’s not good at building but he always helps phineas and ferb. He’s clearly no expert at romance but he still pursues it fairly often. He’s still just a kid and no expect on astrophysics, but he’s gonna do his best to help his friends out of a tight spot dammit! The ‘cowardly nerd’ aspect was dropped from his character fairly early on and while he has plenty of mundane fears and anxieties, in a crisis he’s one of the most level-headed of the group. He’s way braver than most give him credit for, just as willing to jump into situations he’s not suited for as the brothers or isabella

one of my top favorite eps is 'The Baljeatles', which is paired with 'Vanessassary Roughness' (also v good). 'Swiss Family Phineas' paired with 'Oh, There You Are, Perry' is so classic too! also 'It's About Time', 'Dude We're Getting the Band Back Together', 'Don't Even Blink', 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Meet Max Modem!' there's just so many lol

i also love all the perry-centric eps like 'Sidetracked', 'Primal Perry', and 'Where's Perry'.

there's also the specials like 'Summer Belongs to You', 'Act Your Age', the star wars special, and the movie! (at2d not catu)

I really like Rollercoaster the Musical! (I know Isabella sings about phineas in that one but that isn’t the reason I like it). I love seeing how much the show grew from the pilot to that episode! And all the songs are so fun.

….gosh I’m thinking through it and most of my favorite episodes have phinabella moments in them, even if those moments aren’t the main reason I like the episodes😅. tbh that’s probably because the episodes I rewatch the most are ones where I know there’s a phinabella moment 😂

OH THE AGLET EPISODE!!!! I adore that one! And the one with the Baljeatles. Chances are, a good song will draw me to an episode, even if there’s no Phinabella🤣🤣

1. how long i've known about them

i've known who ferb was since i first saw phineas and ferb when i was about 8, i want to say? so 9 years, give or take! he was fairly out of focus in my brain for most of that time though, it's only when that dormant hyperfixation finally emerged last year that he started taking up space in my brain

2. whether or not they've ever made me cry

nope - i'm actually drawn to pnf specifically because it almost never makes me feel sad hsjnbfkj

7. the moment of theirs that made me the happiest

i'm gonna cheat a couple of these and just go for Categories of moments rather than single distinct ones [mostly because i don't have time to dig through 200+ episodes hsjnfkj] but the main reason i love ferb so much is how strongly he's coded as autistic so any moment where that really comes through makes me go :) :) :) so much..... most of it is a lack of an action rather than the presence of one, like him being mostly nonverbal and rarely emoting, but sometimes there's a Moment where he does something and i'm like oh you have so much autism and i love that. been a while since i watched pnf so unfortunately i can't pull up specific episode examples but it's there i promise hjkdnjkfgjb

8. something about them that made me laugh

as iconic as it is whenever ferb talks i think the silent visual gags or funny background events he's often at the centre of are so good. a lot of the time visual jokes like that are so much funnier if you don't say anything about them and ferb is the king of this

9. my favourite canon outfit of theirs

oh you KNOW it's gotta be his outfit in the baljeatles. so funky. so openly and unapologetically gay. there's a reason it's my icon lmao look at this

even though this is an easy top pick ferb gets so many good and iconic outfits over the show though. some of my other favourites are his greaser look in my sweet ride and the dress he wears at the end of gaming the system. ferb really went out there and invented queer fashion

10. my favourite moment with them in canon

another category of moments rather than anything singular but i absolutely melt whenever ferb directly interacts with his family in a positive way [especially his siblings] it's invariably adorable. like when candace ruffles his hair during the end of summer belongs to you and he smiles at the affection that's the good shit..... this kid loves and is loved by his family so much

11. my favourite relationship they have with another

easy answer but i love his and phineas' dynamic! they are Brothers and they care each other so much. the way they play off each other is really funny and makes for fun writing when it's explored enough which honestly it kinda wasn't but i digress and it's so obvious that they're ride or die for each other no matter what. it's very sweet and quite possibly my favourite thing about the entire show

12. what i like about how the fandom portrays them

i often see ferb portrayed as casually feral the way many a neurodivergent child is and i LOVE it. objectively correct, thank you so much. let ferb commit arson

favorite thing about them

His frenemy relationship with Buford is so fun to watch. The banter between these two is my favorite part when the plot’s on the kids. 

The Baljeatles was a great spotlight episode for him. I like how he seems to represent one of those kids who follows the rules religiously until they realize how freeing rebellion can be. 

Also, him shoving Zack out of the way and acting like he’s a boy band member during Chop Away at My Heart cracks me up every time.

Power goes to his head too easily. Nerds of a Feather and Cranius Maximus are good examples of this.

In your professional opinion what’s the best episode of PNF

oh geez

ive thought abt this before and i don’t have a #1 absolute favorite but i do have a couple of favorites.

for regular episodes i’d say bully bromance breakup and doofapus rank highest..blackout! is also up there, as is when worlds collide (whalemingooo........). most season 3 is up there along with a lot of season 4, doof 101 is great. oh and the indiana jones episode with ohio flynn and rhode island fletcher?? also amazing.

and of course youve got season 1 favorites like dude we’re getting the band back together which gets +10000 for love handel

and then there’s stuff like max modem and the baljeatles that were like, good but not outstanding episodes, but had absolute

as for specials i’d say that’s much tougher... night of the living pharmacists might hold #1. but like..the star wars special is INCREDIBLY good too and gets bonus points for some of the best songs in the show. of course i love 2nd dimension, oh and the 2 parter where’s perry is SO SO SO good and heartwarming and great...and last day of summer is great, also bonus points for all around wonderful songs.

uh, if i had to choose just one regular episode..probably doofapus. it’s fairly normal in terms of formula, and has some of the funniest bits imo.

overall i like..i like all of it. there’s literally like 2 out of, what, 222 episodes, that i don’t like. pretty good batting average.

Done with Season 2

I finished going through Phineas and Ferb season 2 (and even started watching bits of Season 3).

Overall, the season’s been a marked improvement over S1, with a lot of strong episodes! One thing I noticed is the absolute lack of adult jokes. S1 managed to slip in a few, like Candace saying she feels like a number 2 or the time she went on a psychedelic trip from tree moss. I wonder if S&P was way more strict this time because f PnF being more popular?

Putting some thoughts about individual episodes under the cut:

Thaddeus and Thor: This was a fun look at what PnF could have been like had it been made in the 90s. The two would be way more obnoxious, while Candace would be their enemy. Boy, am I glad cartoons dropped the awful trope back in the 90s up to mid aughts of siblings who just can’t stand one another.

Hide and Seek: Irving’s intro episode. It’s always weird to me how when cartoons make an ultrafan character representing the fandom as part of the show, they make the character in question kind of a weirdo at best and a complete creep at worst.

The Baljeatles:  Baljeet rules. Also were the creators of the show got told that Stacey should have a love interest too? Though it’s funny that Coltrane barely makes an appearance all season.

Spa Day:  Stacey’s a real trooper Also this episode makes me wish I could go to a spa.

Phineas and Ferb's Quantum Boogaloo: Fun as this episode was, I do feel bad for Candace here., what with the implication that her trying to bust PnF is a terrible thing that could lead to catastrophic results.

Finding Mary McGuffin: Awwwww, this episode was amazing with Doof being the best dad, and Vanessa seeing that he does love her no matter what. I appreciated that she didn’t go “I learned my lesson of the day” and just took the symbol of her dad’s love for her straight out of the kid’s hands LOL

What Do It Do?: I’m glad we got confirmation that Linda is where Candace got being so highstrung from. Also Lawrence making that amazing birdhouse shows where Ferb got his mechanical talents from.

Undercover Carl: Fuck yeah, Carl! Carl’s been low-key cool and I’m glad he got his own focus episode.

Not Phineas and Ferb:  Oof, I guess they saved the awful 90s sibling dynamic for Irving and his brother here. Though it was fun seeing Isabella, Baljeet and Buford simulate a day for PnF perfectly.

Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!: Perfect. Just PERFECT~ Also nice callback to Candace’s idea of the boys making a giant paper airplane from the time they got stuck in an island

Ladies and Gentlemen, Meet Max Modem!: Lawrence is such an adorable nerd! Also incredibly chill, what with just going along with the kids’ plans.

Brain Drain: Doof’s ways of messing with Perry this episode was amazing. What an incredibly petty jerk <3 Also the platypus rapping was perfect~

Rollercoaster: The Musical!: Looks like they got a lot of budget remaking this episode LOL. My favorite bits are the part where you can clearly see they’ve reused animation from the first episode, especially in the roller coaster scene where you can see the original kids instead of Buford and Baljeet.

Also this bit of continuity had me laughing:

Candace Gets Busted: I was honestly not too hot on this episode. Like I know Candace has bad luck, but literally nothing in this episode was her fault. She just invited a few people over, and PnF’s reputation as the cool kids with the best parties ended up screwing Candace over. The Mysterious Force was a bit more mean towards Candace in this episode since it let her get caught, that’s for sure.
