so, we agree that kokichi's love hotel is really interesting, right? for saiouma purposes, of course.

in most of the love hotel events, the characters don't act like themselves. they act a bit differently, and on top of that, don't have their actual roles.

but with kokichi's love hotel event...

they just act like themselves. shuichi is a detective, kokichi is a sly antagonistic thief. shuichi even says says it himself, "Ah, so I'm not a different person here. I'm me, and Kokichi is Kokichi.

this sets it apart from every other love hotel event.

think about it.

notice how all of them are clearly imagining someone else. kaede is imagining a lover, miu a childhood friend. korekiyo is imagining someone that confessed to him, angie a "lower rank"(presumably something related to worship of atua on her island). gonta is imagining an actor(?), and tenko a fellow user of neo-aikido. rantaro is imagining a student, maki is imagining a fellow person at her orphanage. ryoma is imagining a former manager, himiko is imagining an animal she granted a human form with magic, kaito is imagining a rival pilot, and kirumi is imagining the son of an employer. i'm not even touching tsumugi's event.

now, some of them are more unclear, like kiibo's event. it's implied that shuichi is a close friend, but either way, he's not meant to act like shuichi usually acts.

this is all unlike kokichi's event. if anything, SHUICHI is more in-character during the event than kokichi is, but that makes sense, considering kokichi's character. that's an argument for another day, however.

one other think that's odd about his love hotel event is that kokichi leaves.

in all of the other events, the screen just fades to black with the character sprite still standing there. but with kokichi...

he leaves. after playing around with shuichi a little bit, he turns and leaves. NONE of the others are like this.

now, i think it's worth mentioning what the love hotel events are. the danganronpa wiki states; "The student fully believes in the dream scenario even if it is farfetched, but has no memory of the encounter when they wake up, whereas the protagonist is fully aware that it's a dream, and has some foggy memories of the encounter when they wake up." the reason none of the other people leave is because this is a dream on their part, an ideal. in kokichi's ideal, not only is he toying around with SHUICHI, he leaves him pining and confused, just like he does in-game.

But then again, what do I know? This could be not-canon, and thus not saiouma.

Ohhhh I have so much to say you have no idea

I'll go with my DRV3 post-game headcanons because that's generally what I think about!

Shuichi: Disaster bi. I recently had the thought that he'd actually be awesome as nonbinary, but I feel like he's the type to realize that in his mid 30s or something

Kaito: Bigger disaster bi than Shuichi somehow. I like to think that, while he's iffy/confused about gay people, he accepts trans people without a thought (he's just like "oh you're actually a guy/girl! okay") and just demands that they "act like their gender" bahaha

Ryoma: I know this is a controversial thing to say but. Straight. cis/het. But he's like the biggest and nicest ally ever because well his entire friend group is very queer

Rantaro: I don't see this enough!!!! Aro/ace Rantaro!!! His love hotel is literally him being a tutor with no romantic or sexual undertones!!!! His character concept is probably "playboy with no interest in romance"!! But yeah aro/ace, romance and sex-repulsed

Gonta: Probably pan, but fairly heteronormative. I feel like he gets married in middle age because he's really not searching for a relationship for most of his life and more busy enjoying his hobbies!

Kokichi: Obviously very gay! I generally have him as a trans guy who, due to some shenanigans that happened in his childhood, thought he was a cis guy (until puberty hit and he had to figure out why he was freaking bleeding). Ironically, I like to call him "the cissest of cis guys" haha

Korekiyo: Ace! Not looking for a romantic relationship but I like to think he has a strong platonic partnership with Tenko

Keebo: Aro/ace, romance-positive and sex-neutral. He doesn't experience romantic or sexual attraction but is totally open to a romantic relationship. Intersex and he/him nonbinary, but he generally keeps it to himself and only tells people he trusts

Kirumi: Gay gay lesbian gay. She loves GL (Girl's love genre) but keeps it a secret

Himiko: Aromantic and bisexual! She tends more towards girls than guys

Maki: PSA Maki is gay and was straightwashed when they put her in Danganronpa 53. I mean, Tsumugi really said "I made you fall in love with a guy for plot!" I like to think Maki gets out of DRV3 and her first thought is "why was I straight" (for legal reasons this is a joke and bi Maki believers are based but. gay maki)

Tenko: Bi Tenko bi Tenko I KNOW people insist she's a lesbian (and you people are based) buuut I think even in Danganronpa Tenko is bi. People don't choose who they're attracted to, so her being raised to hate men doesn't mean she can't be attracted to them! Okay that's my ted talk about bi tenko

Tsumugi: Her orientation is none of your business (is what she will say, but I will expose her as the bisexual she is)

Angie: Pan! Kinda heteronormative but she learns not to be

Miu: Pan. I think she would meet someone on the internet that she clicks super well with and then they fly out to meet each other and get married

Kaede: Lesbian! So lesbian. I will insist forever that she isn't actually interested in Shuichi and is just super awkward around him because she doesn't want to lead him on when she's gay

That's it for V3! I don't have as many for the other games, mostly since I'm not as interested in or familiar with them (I like to joke that V3 has the gayest cast and everyone in DR2 is straight (obviously untrue, the irrefutable evidence: Nagito)), but here's a few I like:

Chiaki: Trans girl! She's also straight bahaha

Hiyoko: I used to think she'd be the type to act homophobic "as a joke" but then I realized she's super gay. She'd probably still act homophobic though

Nagito: Bi, for the sole reason of: I think he should date Chiaki

Akane: Seems ace!

Mahiru: I think she's straight, but she's a total lesbian magnet

Hajime: Bi (duh). Cursed to be maidenless

Chihiro: Nonbinary, he/they in conversation but always they/them in writing

Junko: This lady is very heterosexual and cisgender

Mukuro: Bi

Makoto: Bi

I also like to joke that all the girls in DR1 are straight and all the boys in DR1 are gay because everyone is in love with Makoto (obviously false because there are some very gay girls and not so gay dudes)

Reasoning : before someone says so , no , I don’t have anything against gay ships. with that in mind , some reasons I don’t like it is the way it’s portrayed in the fandom and how it’s EVERYWHERE. okay , I understand wanting to post about your favorite ship. nothing wrong about that. but the fact that I can search up kaede/shuichi and saimatsu stuff and still be able to see saiouma stuff kinda irks me. and the portrayal from some people — don’t even get me started. but ,, believe me when I say that if you ship it , my respect for you doesn’t change because of that. ship it all you want , you have the right. 💟

Saimatsu :

Reasoning : I could write a whole essay about this ship. but some key moments that I personally like are when Shuichi thinks about Kaede when Korekiyo proposes to raise someone from the dead , and also the last trial where Shuichi vows to avenge her. I also love the love hotel and salmon mode , though those aren’t canon.

Plus personally I think the Love Hotel scenes shouldn't really count since whoever's in there (except Shuichi) are in a dream-like state and sorta hallucinates Shuichi as their ideal which sounds like beïng roofied and I'm sure if that's consent…

The thing with the Love Hotel pushing aside all the weird grey of using it (im chalking it up to the player choice) is that what they are is an IDEALIZED STATE.

Kaito's ideal partner is a rival someone to butt heads with, which is why when he's with Shuichi in the Love Hotel, he's being aggressive, talking a lot of smack and even leaning over Shuichi pinning him to the wall. What he's doing isn't taking advantage or pressuring anyone, it's him acting like he's in his ideal scenario, in such a scenario, the clear rival would obviously fire back just as well and assert themselves, it's such basic shounen rivalry.

It is so important to know that Love Hotel Kaito or anyone does not fully realize who Shuichi is, even Kokichi acts like he's expecting a very different kind of detective. Shuichi is something they are in this dream state projecting onto, there ideal will share the same name and body as Shuichi, but the expected personality WILDLY differs. He's just the base the ideal is being filled into.

Plus ideal is different then healthy relationship, an ideal is a fantasy, it's the romance novel. Why is everyone so aggressive? They're just playing out the fantasy.

Kaito wants a rival, so he's more aggressive then he would be in real life.

Miu wants to become pregnant, so the world can't take no for an answer.

Tenko wants to explore boys in a way that she holds no culpability for, so she keeps coming up with excuses for why Shuichi should take advantage of her.

Korekiyo wants to have a sense of control with no strings attached, so he can't let Shuichi take any sort of control

They aren't acting like Shuichi's a real person, because to them right now he isn't! In their brains, he's essentially just a fictional character to them. A face and voice they're projecting a scenario they think sounds really erotic or interesting. Which fits really well with the themes of the actual game. They aren't fully aware, and in that dream state, project a character onto Shuichi. To the people he's being paired with, it's the dream equivalent of googling and listening to "asmr m4m your rival threatens you, erotic, pirates, switch, bratting, 16+"

Shuichi does have to keep up that character or risk something bad happening. However, if that's anyone's fault, then it's not any of the kids, it's Monokuma for even giving them the key. It's basically a mini go-around of the entire theme around fictional characters.

Favourite thing about them:

I Love Kaede so much so that’s really hard lol, but I think maybe how she has a good balance between encouraging other people and believing in them but not being afraid to do things herself when it’s clear the others won’t. She has such positive energy to move the plot forwards which is a quality you really want in a protagonist. Also her colour scheme is just chefs kisses.

Least favourite thing about them:

Kaede is an excellent example of the Female Character with Lots of Potential is Killed Off to Help Motivate Boy trope, which is just, yikes. Not a character problem but a writing problem to be fair.

BrOTP:

Kaede and Korekiyo!! It’s a friendship that purely exists in my head but that I find a way to work into all the fics or AU’s I can lol.

OTP:

Her and Shuichi lol, they’re very much the ‘Excuse me, he asked for no pickles!’ Kinda ship and they’re just really fun and sweet together!

nOTP:

I’m not sure I have one, Kaede has the protagonist power where you could ship her with anyone in the cast and I’d be like yeah alright

Random headcanon:

This is purely projecting lol, but in gym class Kaede absolutely got in trouble for cheering on her team too loudly lol, the ref had to come over and tell her it was distracting the other team and to stop (she did not)

Unpopular opinion:

Kaede’s a better and healthier match for Shuichi then Kokichi lol, no further comment

Song I associate with them:

Butch 4 Butch is a fun one for her, though mostly just bc it mentions pianos lol, but I’m also going to say Hotel California by the Eagles, one of the songs I most heavily associate with all of V3

in v3 there's love hotel mode

MOST of the characters have really wholesome sfw love hotel scenes. Basically it's just a game mode to do a bunch of free time events with the v3 cast. If you unlock the love hotel ticket (? Never played myself) basically you see and play out the other character's fantasy without breaking character. Most of it is wholesome and funny (character terrified of hand holding or just really really wanting a hug or similar) but as can be expected

A Couple Are Kinda Strange

the worst are korekiyo's (very similar to the fanfic scene Korekiyo canonically really likes ropes in general and in other ways) and Tsumugi's and Angie's. Angie's and Tsumugi's are. Hmmmm. Ambiguous. But. Sure are scenes. (They're on the wiki)

Predictions for GameGrumps' cover of Danganronpa V3 (because I doubt they'll cover Ultra Despair Girls first):

Arin gets deja vu with Miu and decides that they're going to subvert expectations and make her a murderer

Dan falls in love with Gonta

Arin is so visibly upset by the game's ending that he denounces Danganronpa as a series and curses all the games (but in the same breath says that they're very subversive and actually interesting)

Dan falls in love with Himiko

Arin takes great pleasure in slapping every single slappable object for the monocoins, but he will then proceed to never use a single one of them

Dan says Korekiyo makes his skin crawl

Arin gives Kaede the main character voice despite Dan's chagrin

Dan falls in love with Ryoma

Both of them call Kaede "The Ultimate Penis"

Both of them joke about Kirumi being asked to do impossible/ridiculous tasks and her always doing them

And finally, every single star will align to make them stumble across Kokichi's love hotel sequence and both are scarred for life

kirumi

favorite thing about them: the utter dedication to making life easier for everybody around her. she acts out of love for others. she always tries to serve what she believes to be the greater good.

least favorite thing about them: sigh. this is a writing issue, but i desperately wish the game didn’t present so many interesting thing about her and then just… never address them. her sense of self-worth is utterly abysmal. she is desperate for love and connection and care. she feels like she needs to be perfect at everything she does or she’ll never be worthy of love. those are very interesting things! and the game never brings them up! even in her graduation event, it’s treated like a good and positive thing that she is choosing to carry on living in subservience to others. just… talk about these issues, please!

(yes, yes, i know about the love hotel event. i do not like the love hotel event and i hate that it’s the closest thing we have to an actual exploration of kirumi’s deep-seated fears and desires.)

favorite line: “no matter the situation, no matter what happens, i am here to serve everyone.”

brotp: i love most platonic kirumi content, but i especially love seeing her as friends with kaede, ryoma, kokichi, miu, and korekiyo.

otp: do i even need to say it? i will anyway. it’s amatojo. they are absolutely everything to me. i have written essays on why they work so well together. i have an ask about rantaro waiting in the inbox, so i’ll link the Big amatojo explanation i wrote when i answer that.

notp: this is going to seem petty, but i dislike seeing her romantically with anyone that’s not rantaro. ^^;; i have no problem with most of these ships conceptually, but i’m happy in my amatojo room. i have… a lot of kirumi ship tags blacklisted.

a random headcanon: i’ve seen kirumi as autistic ever since i first played v3. repetitive tasks like cleaning and fast-paced, involved tasks like cooking are incredible stims. she hates being idle and her maid work really helps with that. she also tends to speak in a monotone and has a somewhat dry sense of humor (though she does still laugh at rantaro’s sillier jokes).

i also think she does embroidery as a hobby in the rare event that she has free time! she likes to add little details to clothes, pillowcases, tablecloths, and things like that. she’s very particular about her aesthetic.

unpopular opinion: holding kirumi haters by their shoulders. kirumi is not boring nor is she a bad character. okay? i agree that her motive was stupid. i agree that the game does not write her very well most of the time. that does not make her a bad character nor does it make her boring, and even if you dislike her, please don’t tell her fans to their faces that she’s the worst part of the game.

a song i associate with them: i have a lot… but i’ll go with “rabbit heart (raise it up)” by florence + the machine.

favorite picture: so… i am not allowed to google kirumi images. i do, however, have some sprites saved to my phone, so i will send my favorite kirumi sprite. she is very happy to have fulfilled your request.

favorite thing about them: he is so, so full of love for the world and the universe. even when he’s being headstrong and stubborn, his priority is always making sure the people around him are safe and that they’re not worrying about him. kaito consistently puts everybody else’s needs in front of his own in a way that’s both endearing and frustrating—please let yourself be cared about, boy!

least favorite thing about them: sigh. i do not like his free time events with shuichi very much. i absolutely adore kaito, but his free time events are… just listening to him talk and not really engaging much or getting much from it. i think that’s an issue with nearly all of shuichi’s free time events, though. i love shuichi a lot, but he does not take a very active role in his free time events the same way kaede and hajime do.

favorite line: the classic “the impossible is possible! all you’ve gotta do is make it so!”

brotp: i like platonic saimota and akamota a lot! kaito will see a protagonist, say “is anyone gonna make best friends with that”, and not wait for an answer. i’ve also seen platonic content of him with tenko that i actually really like! i think they could have a funny sibling dynamic.

otp: sighs deeply. momoharu, my loves. i think about him and maki all the time. they’re so sweet together and good for each other. she keeps his head on straight and reminds him that he doesn’t have to carry the world on his shoulders while he helps her open up and become more confident and learn to love herself… augh. ;-;

notp: …okay. i am going to be crucified for this opinion, but… i really, really don’t like oumota. i understand why people like it and i don’t begrudge them that, but it is not my cup of tea in the slightest.

a random headcanon: i think being fluent in three languages has given kaito VERY eclectic taste in music. he likes to listen to just about any genre, but he has a special fondness for 80s new wave.

unpopular opinion: i genuinely cannot think of any off the top of my head. i suppose that’s a good thing.

a song i associate with them: “if i ever leave this world alive”, flogging molly.
