hi!! ahh thank you! yes, I do have a (wip) post with my translations of character titles (eg cssr) and proper nouns in mdzs here! and I actually have been meaning to post an analysis of the mdzs surnames for a long time, so I'll use this ask to do so! thank you for reminding me!!

note: the characters are in traditional chinese :)

魏 Wei

this one is pretty self-explanatory for anyone who can read chinese. on the right is a 鬼 gui radical, which means ghost! for our lil 鬼道之王 king of the ghost path <3

(this radical also appears in a lot of words for "soul," such as 魂魄)

藍 Lan

I've often seen people simply say 藍 lan means "blue," and that wouldn't be wrong but it also wouldn't be completely correct. similar to how wwx clarifies that the 義 yi of 義城 yi city is not that of 俠義 heroic justice, but that of 義莊 coffin home, the in-universe definition from chapter 18 is that the lan surname is derived from 伽藍 qielan, which is a loan word from sanskrit, “saṃgharāma,” meaning buddhist monastery.

溫 Wen

溫 wen means temperature, warm. the wens do love their sun. pretty straightforward!

金 Jin

also straightforward. the jins are rich and opulent, and 金 jin means gold!

聶 Nie

here's where things get interesting. this is the one that made me think more about the surnames, and the reason why they're written in traditional here. I had always read nhs's name in simplified (聂) but when I saw it in traditional (聶), it clicked.

not only does 聶 nie mean "to whisper," but nhs has three 耳 ears in his name!!

AND INDEED, NHS HAS EARS EVERYWHERE, AND HE IS ALWAYS LISTENING. 👂👂👂

江 Jiang

this one I had to think about for a bit. of course, there's the most direct answer, which is that 江 jiang means river—and the jiang's are, of course, well known for their lotus pier and rivers and such. but a more interesting thought that occurred to me was that 江 may be a reference to 江湖 jianghu, aka rogue martial artist communities who aren't affiliated with mainstream society often seen in wuxia fantasy novels. those part of the jianghu do not adhere to government/law, but rather live under individual moral codes of conduct re righteousness, justice, vengeance, etc. quoting jeannette ng's essay on wuxia:

In Stateless Subjects: Chinese Martial Arts History and Postcolonial History, Petrus Liu translates jianghu as “stateless”, which further emphasizes that the hero’s rejection of and by the machineries of government. Jianghu is thus a world that rejects the dictates of the state in favor of divine virtue and reason, but also of a sense of self created through clan and community.

the jiang family precepts and ideals seem v aligned with this aspect of jianghu morality—after all, jc never lets us (or himself) forget that wwx's acts of vigilante heroism are those of an ideal jiang.

Bonus: 莫 Mo

mo xuanyu was only ever a blank canvas. 莫 mo means nothing, no one, none. </3

He had booked his room for a standard week; hopefully, that would be enough to determine what killed the mail order brides in Lotus Bank House.

He walked over after breakfast and knocked onto the forbidding front door.

Then, he waited.

When he was close to giving up, the door opened, and an old woman with indigo skin and rust-gray hair opened, looking at him as if he was bringing the plague.

“The master is busy!” she declared, shaking her head. “You’re a tourist? The lotus ponds are open for viewing on Friday and Saturday evenings. Can’t you read the sign?”

He put his foot between the two heavy gates, risking a terrible bruise should she slam the door.

“The sign doesn’t apply to me,” he said. “I’m from the Hundred Rivers agency, here to find out about the young woman who drowned. The matchmaking company hired us, and I have an appointment with your boss.”

“Oh, that was such bad luck -- such bad luck!” the old woman wailed, opening the door wide. “She was already the third. The lotus in the ponds is jealous of its human masters.”

She waved him in, closed the door again, and then marched off, expecting him to follow.

The courtyard was full of workers, both domestic servants and commercial gardeners, all of them natives. The colors of their hair, skin and eyes shone like flowers in the sunshine.

Compared to them, old Mr. Guo was just plain and human, skin sallow and hair gray. He was very busy with three padds, a computer terminal and five scared workers reporting to him; but when Fang Duobing turned up, he dismissed them.

They fled, visibly relieved to get out of his presence.

These are characters from the first three books of my WIP series (formarly just one book), Testaments of the Green Sea.

What is your favorite piece or part of history?

Narul: "History? Um...I guess I never really thought about that sort of thing. Do legends count? Huma the Spiritblood is a story I really like...but I don't know how true those stories were."

Ninma: "Seha! Princess Seha! She was from Makur, but when she dueled Tamel, she almost won too. Tamel was so impressed that he made her his general! And then when Tamel came to Kishetal he sent her to find a place to found a great city! So she sailed down the Aratshin River and discovered the Great Lake and so she killed all those monsters and she talked to the ancient Kiriki and that's how it was decided where Labisa would be founded!"

Otilia: "The Arkodian kingdom. My father used to walk me through the old crumbling temples, the mantle of our fireplace was made from a piece of an old Arkodian temple. It's hundreds of years old but I still remember the paints were so vibrant. People still wear Arkodian jewelry when they can find it, it just seems like everything was so beautiful back then, I wish I could have seen the mountain sanctuaries of the spirit mothers."

Akard: "The reign of Tamel, 500 years of peace and prosperity, when Kishetal was one kingdom, when Kishites built the greatest palaces that the world has ever seen. Some day we will see that world again, soon I hope."

Istek: "Last night, I had wine, food, and these two." He gestures to his partners, Dati an Sihunu. "Does that count as history?"

Penetinos: "Arkodai, I would have loved to see the great furnaces where the sages and smiths worked together to make magic metals, to trap the elements themselves in mortal tools."

What is your biggest fear?

Narul: "That I'll forget the people that I care about."

Ninma: "That I'll end up like my family."

Otilia: "Hmm, I'm not entirely sure, once I would have said that it was my old husband trying to find me. But now I'd love to see him try it."

Akard: "I fear that when I die all of my work, all the work I've done to better this land will fall apart and that all of the terrible things I've had to do will have been for nothing."

Istek: "Being helpless."

Penetinos: "To tell you the truth, I'm not sure. For most of my life it was death, especially after I found about my illness, but now I've accepted it. I suppose I'm scared of dying and feeling like I'm not ready, like there was more I could have done."

What is your favorite flower?

Narul: "A hasir flower. You only see them in Kishetal, they bloom in autumn and they are so many shades of red and yellow and orange, it makes the hillside look like its on fire. And they smell sweet. I pick one any time I see them. I know I don't really look like the sort but..." He gestures to his massive frame "But, I like putting them in my beard and hair."

Ninma: "Hasir flowers! Narul gives me them."

Otilia: "Around Kalmanati where I grew up there were fields and fields of red poppies. I think I would say that those are my favorite."

Akard: "An apunina lotus, blue like a sapphire, when they bloom the entire river is perfumed."

Istek: "Flowers? Flowers hmm...not many of those at sea..." He turns to Sihunu. "What were the flowers growing around the spring where we met, those little purple ones?"

"Lavender?"

"That's it! Lavender!"

Penetinos: "The saffron crocus. They used to leave them at the temple where I served."

WIP Wednesday snippet

"washed up nobody worms his way into local governmental leader's heart" was in the lead when i last checked the Out of Context Wip poll.

Taxes fried my brain on Wednesday, so you get it now! What is time anyway!!

The summary refers to "A Serpent Among the Lotus", my double-post-canon crossover with endgame Jiang Cheng/Zhuzhi-Lang. Zhuzhi-Lang is stuck in a form closer to his birth form right now, mostly monstrous.

"I am dangerousss."

"Yeah? So am I. And so is the sect leader. If he's not worried, I'm not." Jiang Cheng shrugged. It had gotten easier to shed the awkwardness of referring to himself like that with each day. Now, Jiang Wanyin sat separate from Sect Leader Jiang, held at a distance if only for the hours they spoke together.

Zhuzhi-Lang considered him, propping his head up on his folded arms. "Tell thiss one about your ssect leader? He musst be different from thosse I've met before."

Jiang Cheng sighed. "What's there to tell? He's loud and short tempered and yells a lot {lists his negative qualities as he sees them or has heard}."

"Jiang-gongzi does not like his sect leader."

"What? That's not true!" Jiang Cheng huffed at Zhuzhi-Lang's disbelieving look. "He's powerful," he said slowly. "He has a very strong core." That little fact comes with a bewildering stab of guilt and grief that he shoves back down. "He looks out for everyone in his sect. He makes sure no kids are running around begging on the street with no home. He does his best to be fair in dealings." He was quickly running out of nice things to say about himself. "Um, he looks fine, I guess? People used to say he was the fifth most handsome bachelor of his generation."

"Only fifth then? What doessss he rank now?"

Jiang Cheng stopped. Lan Huan was still technically a bachelor, secluded though he was. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were married. He did not dwell on them. Jin Zixuan...

"Second, I guess, of those who were originally ranked."

"Handssome man."

"I guess."

"Oh? Jiang-gongzi preferss women?"

"Maybe?" He scratched his head, then shook it. "Who has time to consider romance or attractiveness or anything? We're still reestablishing our sect."

Zhuzhi-Lang hummed. Songs of insects filled in the long stretch of silence. Jiang Cheng fidgeted.

"Do uh... Do you prefer lady demons or guy demons?" Zhuzhi-Lang looked at him and Jiang Cheng puffed up defensively. "Fair's fair, you asked first!"

"Thiss one hass only found a human man attractive." Zhuzhi-Lang tipped his head, long hair sliding over his arm to pool against his chest in a dark waterfall. "Where does Wanyin-gongzi rank on the list?"

Jiang Cheng choked on the sip of water he had just taken. He sputtered some incoherent response about not ranking at all.

They turned to safer topics, Jiang Cheng complaining about the water ghouls that cropped up around this time of year and how annoying they were to hunt down. It was nice to complain casually. As sect leader, he didn't really have anyone he could talk this candidly with. They compared water ghouls to some demons and similar resentful dead further west.

The notes Jiang Cheng has taken from his conversations with Zhuzhi-Lang far outstrip the few scrolls they have on demons. He sets some of the scholarly disciples who work in the library to organize and transpose his notes into useful scrolls. After all, if one demon has floated down the river, what would stop more from following?

“silent songs i'll be humming on” has me in a chokehold as a title i NEED to hear what it is 👀

YES! Okay, this one is a bit of an anomaly in the WIPs, given it's more of a wrote-and-never-published one. It's a fic I wrote around a similar time of 'in sun, I will rise' and 'like leaves of a lotus,' when I was still testing the waters of writing Powder/young Jinx's attempts to navigate the world she's been brought into under Silco's wing.

In summary: It takes place during a local celebration in the Undercity—which both of them are completely avoiding. Silco is reminiscing, bitterly, on Vander; Jinx has just had a run-in with Ekko, and is fiercely trying to distract herself from it—and the two of them wind up in Silco's old home beneath the river.

It opens the door for some surprisingly heartfelt conversations between them, but is ultimately watching these two tiptoe around each other's walls; realizing, Oh, I know this, because I am this, and cementing that strange parent-child side-eyeing they have with each other.

He jingles his keys from his pocket and thumbs through them, absently. She sniffs again. "There're festivities to partake in, today," he drawls off, questioningly. "Aren't there children your age you'd rather be out with?"  She's all bones at thirteen, a gangly little thing, not much different from himself at that age. Avoiding his eyes, she snares one thumb through the threadbare sleeve of her sweater, bites the inside of her cheek, and scowls. "No." He studies her, silently. If an explanation is meant to come from that, it won't come for some time. He turns back to the door, slotting the key in and unlocking it. "Very well."

A lot of this story is also taking a glimpse into Silco's old self through his belongings, and Jinx's perceptions of them; this shabby, eclectic, blue-hued thing that doesn't match anything of what she's familiar with from his current office now.

It's a very personal space, to Silco; a safe place he rarely comes to, anymore, except to hole up and dig into work he needs absolute silence to manage—but he's letting her into it.

Even though she's still on guard, and looking for every excuse to not be deserving of that admittance; still so distrusting of him, and all that her old life signifies for her.

She pries her nails from her cup, before a more intrusive impulse may lead her to smash it against the wall. As she so often does, she turns to her words, instead.  "You don't even want me here, do you?" The comb falls still in his hand. "I'm sorry," Jinx blurts, "I'm sorry, I'm—I didn't mean—" "I know."

But that defensiveness is ultimately bringing out Silco's own memory—empathizing with her sense of betrayal, and relaying it back to his experience with Vander. Which, of course, leads to some traded insights on love, heartbreak, and self-reclaimation. (And, from Jinx's own curiousity, a prodding of whether Vander was the only "one"—which leaves Silco disastrously caught off guard (not this kid trying to clock him, excuse her) and tiptoeing into a very awkward attempt at giving romantic advice.)

Needless to say, it's not his lane, at all.

In his...very trauma-induced way, he tries?

"Love is a fickle thing," he mulls, eventually. His hand finds her hair, smoothing its flyaways back from her temple. "For all it devours, it just as soon turns stale." He pauses, feeling her brow wrinkle tight against his shirt, and sighs. "This is but a moment in your life, dove; it will pass." Her fingers cord to fists at his back. "What if it doesn't?" she whispers, muffled and vile.  For a long breath, he says nothing. The patterns of the old carpet flicker in the dim light. "It will."

Ultimately, though, the crux of this story is a realization that this girl truly could have been his flesh and blood, in another life—and that a part of him, perhaps, could have enjoyed that life, had he been any different of a man than he is now.

It doesn't change the fact that he's seen her—and that, little by little, she is knifing her way into his rotted heart, in a way he is perhaps scared to admit he is growing fond of.

Now, he only wishes to tuck the glitter of her chaos beneath the folds of his coat, like a precious trinket stitched into the seams, and hold her there: a memento clung to in war's bitter desolation: a Kindred's kiss to a soul breaking by fractions: a poisoned seed rooting in the soil of his blackened soul, unfurling in leaves of Arcana-blue chloroplast and bioluminescent petals, to something magnificent.

Ugh these two.

Also, a music trivia (as always)—the title comes from 'Overcome' by Skott, which is just a beautiful track start to finish. There's so many lines that subconsciously had an influence on this story, but the second verse especially: "I'm hanging on fine / I'm trying to make sense of it all / Trying to understand / Do you ever wonder what it's like / Losing what you cannot be without? / I'll keep running."

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Futures Written on Shifting Sand   My only fic to pass 4 digit kudos at 2134 kudos. Unfinished wip, that I might still go back to.   My first MDZS fic, Canon divergent AU where Lan Wangji is brought back to Lotus Pier after the Xuanwu cave incident and is there for the Wen attack. 

Time Enough and Life 486 kudos. A Torchwood bigbang fic for one of the big bangs that I ran back on Livejournal. 

Writing up the report on the Night Travellers, Jack finds one line in the Electro guide book that confuses him – it closed in 1977. It leaves him with one question, how did Ianto watch films there if it closed six years before he was born?

As Spring Will Surely Come

MDZS. Written for the Bottomji big bang early this year, 464 kudos. 

Now in their forth year of marriage Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are settled into their life together in the Cloud Recesses, looking forward to a quiet, cozy winter together in the Jingshi. A night hunt at a haunted water mill, old injuries and family illness make it a very difficult winter instead.

Going On 351 kudos. One my earliest fics, written and posted while the first series of Torchwood was still airing. 

Conversations, realisations and angst set after Countrycide. 

Secrets and Hope 339 Kudos. Fix it fic written in the wake of Torchwood series 3. 

As Torchwood slowly rebuilds following the 456 the government is still keeping secrets from them and it's up to Ianto to reveal the truth.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to/mean to then it goes past a few days and I wonder if people really want a reply from me. Then it feels like it’s too long, that I’ve missed the timeframe for it to be reasonable. 

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Probably In Darkness one of the many Torchwood fics that I wrote.

The ending lines being:

Because if living forever is a terrifying thought, then living forever and losing himself in the process is beyond terrifying. It's something that Jack isn't sure there's a word to describe the sheer horror of it.

Huddling against Ianto, Jack supposes that at least he's got all the time in the universe to come up with one.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Maybe New Horizons Canon Divergent SongXiao in the CQL setting (I tend to write novel setting) 

The decision to help a small village threatened by a vicious yaoguai brings with it danger and upsetting news that Xiao Xingchen never expected to receive. With the news comes a choice, one that will change the course of both Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan’s lives in ways that neither of them expect.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, the occasional annoying/odd comment - like asking me to use US spelling grammar or to re-write in past tense as they didn’t like present tense, or leaving a ‘sadly unfinished’ bookmark in a completed big bang fic

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, not so much in recent fandoms - but I have ideas, but Torchwood and Primeval it was a bigger part of it. Most of it had a strong kink element. Generally with the focus being on trust

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Occasionally.  The most ridiculous has to be Hex, Mainframe and the Temporal Trouser Error.

Discworld, Torchwood and Primeval. A conversation across time and space between Hex and Mainframe, two sentient computers.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I’m aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I’m aware of, that is to say if anyone had they’ve not told me.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, as part of a fic writing challenge event, Out of Dark Places, written with Harkpad.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

Honestly I have many ships in every fandom I’ve been in. Although Jack/Ianto will always hold as special place, because it was that ship that really brought me into fandom circles. 

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Probably the ridiculously ambitious alternative 4 season of Torchwood, which used my fic Secrets and Hope as a bridge between series 3 and hypothetical series 4.

13 fic ‘episodes’ which were a mix of creature of the week and had an overarching plot behind it all, using the Rift and Bilis Manger. It was all plotted out, and some ‘episodes’ partially written - but the whole thing would have been something like 300k-400k

16. What are your writing strengths?

Honestly, I don’t know. People have said that I’m good at getting inside characters’ heads. 

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Too many thoughts and description and not enough action, probably.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I can’t write well enough in another language to attempt it. 

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Highlander: The TV series. That was never posted online/shared. The first to be posted/shared was Torchwood.

That’s a difficult one, there are so many over the years - it’s been 17 years I posted by first fic online

An unlikely case fic crossover between Shetland and Rivers of London, written with fondness for the times I spent working on an archaeological dig in Shetland 23 years ago. 

The theft of three Pictish stone carvings from a museum in London lead Peter and Nightingale to Shetland. The reason for the theft is clear: The stones are ancient storage devices for magical energy. Who took them and why is a lot less so. That Shetland has its own mythology and magics which are far closer to that of Scandinavia than London doesn't help matters.

Between the lack of information, the cold and wet January weather and Nightingale's cold, Peter can't help but wish they were back in London.

The important thing is not to make a mistake. They all hold their breath. The guqin strings explode into a flurry of movement,a cascade of notes over and over again. Lan Zhan ! Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan! Kay's comments: I absolutely love this AU and just like Moominmammashandbag's other stories, this one is incredibly creative as well and just has you hooked like a little fish. In which Wei Wuxian dies when the Wens come for Lotus Pier and that leads to a major divergence. Yunmeng Jiang comes out on top of the battle and now, they've got their own river spirit, not that anyone knows about it. After the war, the Jiang siblings ask Lan Wangji to come and play Inquiry and then so many things happen! Never let them see your next move! If you love creative narratives, then this story is for you! Excerpt: “They threw him in the river, after they cut his hand off.” says Jiang Yanli. Dinner is over. Lan WangJi could not have told you what he ate, which seems a pity. Hopefully he will have other opportunities to eat Jiang Yanli’s cooking, other chances where he is not too distracted to notice what is in his bowl. Now they are seated once again in the family room, where Wei Wuxian’s sword sits in its stand on a low shelf, surrounded by torn pieces of paper, scrawled notes and little drawings. Lan WangJi keep looking at it, eyes wandering despite himself when he should be concentrating on what Jiang Yanli is saying. He wants, and does not want to hear this story, but if he does not listen he will not know the right questions to ask. “He could still have survived. He could swim like a fish, always. Even with only one hand, I think he would have survived. But they weighted his feet.” She looks up at Lan WangJi. “Wang Lingjiao told me this. She delighted in telling us, Father and me, when we got home that day. That woman, that evil woman told us that A-Xian was drowned. Like a dog, she said, and she laughed.”

"chengxing i guess" is thus titled because this ship came for me while i was minding my business and i was put out that i had to start an entire new wip about it:

Wen Kexing has heard about Lianhua Wu--Yunmeng youths are not shy about what they like, and what they like are the disciples of Yunmeng Jiang Shi. Strong, principled, determined, free-spirited, charming, playful, etc. Nothing more than banal hero worship of course, although playful does sound promising. Occasionally a sighing, swooning voice will wax poetic about their favourite pretty face. Things like easygoing and warm as a lake on a summer afternoon or untamable and flexible as the river winding through the hills; or impulsive as the rain. And Wen Kexing acknowledges that there's been an attempt. It's merely an attempt that he finds abysmal. Nothing, therefore, could prepare him for the absolute storm of a man who thunders his way through the market, jawline sharper than his sword and eyes even sharper than that. A man with hard-won command in every wire-taut line of his body, deep violet robes flaring out from a waist cinched tight under black leather, and shoulder blades...oh, shoulder blades so distinct. The face of a true beauty, wreathed in venom. Touch, it promises, and you'll definitely get bitten. "Who is that?"  A-Xiang's voice does nothing to pull Wen Kexing's gaze away but he does lean back further in his seat and finish bringing his cup up for a drink, lips lingering on the cool silver as he watches the man cut through the crowd like an arrow. "Silly girl," Wen Kexing says, because if she was paying attention she would have already heard the answer in the conversations around them on the patio, "he's Jiang Wanyin, zongzhu of Yunmeng Jiang Shi. Master of Lianhua Wu."

"Jiang Cheng/Wen Xu" is still in very early stages of sussing out but have a smol glimpse:

Jiang Wanyin knows what it is to be a failure in a father's eyes, upstaged by a brother, found unremarkable by the world. The similarities don't outweigh the differences, but behind the waterfalls of Cloud Recesses, hands buried in lotus-perfumed hair, Wen Xu thinks it's enough.

and of course, "wei wuxian/ye baiyi Soup" which i was prompted ages and ages ago and then just kind of fell off on writing. finished fic WHEN, i lament in the mirror while i honk my own clown nose:

These days Wei Ying hasn't had much reason to cook at all, either a guest at some sect or another or eating at local restaurants and inns or, occasionally, trying not to set whatever he's roasting on fire while he gets lost staring at the stars above his campsite. In fact, Wei Ying hasn't made soup even once since he came back to the world. Huh. That's what makes it particularly notable that he's now sitting here in this questionably-called 'house,' slowly stirring a pot full of water, scrounged vegetation from what might be an attempt at a garden, and hastily hunted game. Nothing fancy, but Wei Ying doesn't think he's gotten rusty. It's hard to get rusty about soup. So he thinks this will eventually become a pretty great meal. Even if it's not his best it will be nourishing and that's actually the most important thing about soup, no matter what anyone else says. Nourishment. Wei Ying mutters the word to himself distractedly as he smudges a line on the talisman keeping his hearth at the right temperature. Few people need a good, nourishing soup right now as much as a guy sitting in a little hut in the chill of mid-autumn watching over a beautiful, barely conscious stranger.

Dull morning F65° at 4am a shower between 4 and 5 am our Inn seems upon a wide moor, the whitewashed church at some distance standing along its parish houses so scattered – off at 5 17/.. from Hede – heavyish showers stop by the way at 6 22/.. a little distance from the post station at  Skallerug [Skälleröd?] (Tzchellăre, Tzchellăry) and the man said if he was not too much hurried, he would take us to Wip thro’ Eist, a post station, 1 ¾ mile  

July Sunday 28 – narrow granite girt, fir-sprinkled, unfertile vale – farmers thinly stewed – thin crops of corn – off from just before Skallerug [Skällerö] in about 1/4 hour at 6 37/.. and at 6 ¾ a few hops tall and looking well – this stage (about 8 am) observe white water lilies lotus of the north, on the river and shallow lake – Stage at 8 35/.. but drove on – at 9 47/.. stop at pretty custom-house at Hogdal and pay a six dollar = 32sk. Banco instead of 24sk. B- as as proposed by the man himself to avoid being searched – he owned giving anything was not compulsory – I offered him a rigs dollar note – because I could not spare my small notes – the man had no change and quietly pocketed the whole – off to the Inn close to the custom house – could not have horses of 1 ½ hour would have breakfasted but had eaten of our rice pudding at 9 – alighted at the neat little wood Inn at Hogdal – picturesque scattered little village or town – had a good room (village Inn) to our ourselves and sat inking over accounts and this little book till off again at 12 ¼ - Talk about the road to Frederickshald [Fredrikshald] – Handbook says we might go by Helle or Westgaard – It seems Helle is supprimée – must go to Westgaard – very beautiful drive from Hogdal rocky woody, narrow, beautiful broken vale – our road lying partly thro’ a forest of pines – this now seems by far the most picturesque beautiful stage since Götheborg [Gothenburg] – it began to rain as we alighted at Hogdal and tho’ a gleam while we were there began again just before we set off and from 12 ¼ for 50 minutes rained tremendously – rained – all the way to the ferry – then almost fair for ¼ hour

The scenery at the ferry very beautiful – up and down the river equally beautiful – fine mamelonné wooded granite or gneiss mountains – neat good-looking Inn on the Norway side and picturesque hut or 2 on the Swedish side on which a new road making to avoid the tremendously steep descent upon the ferry – should like to stay a day at the Norway side Inn – Passport visé – ferry 2sk. Banco per person and a dollar Banco for carriages large or small – our Hogdal horses took us forwards – still rain – the carriage embarked on the ferry-raft or barge in 5 minutes and disembarked in the same – over in 10 minutes – at the ferry at 1 ½ - over at 1 ¾ - off from there at 2 – passed Helle at 2 33/.., an old farmhouse looking dilapidated, and at 2 35/.. alighted here Westgaard – very nice good looking wood-built farmhouse – Still rain and likely for nothing but rain – Frederickshald [Frederikshald] 3/4 mile off – Frederickstad [Frederikstad] 3 ½ mile off – horses from here to be in at 1st they said in 2 hours than in ½ hour! but would take us till 8 to reach Frederickstad [Frederikstad] – ordered dinner – sent off forebud – looked about in the kitchen etc. – no fire in company part of the house – dinner pork-pancake with bacon inside bread and butter and thick milk – everything good – dinner from 4 20/.. to 5 – then inked over accounts and wrote so far of today till 6 ¼ - Still rain – glad we stopt

July Sunday 28 – here – then getting change for 5 Norwegian species and counting it over etc. till 8 – no difficulty in getting change here as in Sweden where it seems as if it was not to be had very terribly rainy night and F61 17° now at 8 pm

WIP of Naga storyboard First Panel The environment changes to a reminiscent version of the Mekong River. The water level is low and the Nagas back fins glide in and out of the water. The sky dull and sad. The mountains full of fog Second Panel The water level gathers and rises and palms, lily pads, lotus flowers grow. The sky clears. In the water the Naga is spinning itself and the fins are popping out of the water. This is going to be more elaborate as its healing the water Third Panel The water subsides and the fauna evens out. The Naga pops its head out and smiles. The Naga will splash out of the water and fly in the sky circling around the viewer and fly away.
