The fact that Tolkien fought in the First World War can be clearly seen in his books. He felt. I'm from Ukraine, so I know something about war. And every description of such events in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings hits the heart.
But one phrase from The Hobbit struck me the most. Usually in movies and books, good triumphs over evil, and the heroes immediately celebrate the victory among the ruins, but not in The Hobbit.
“Victory after all, I suppose!” Bilbo said, feeling his aching head. “Well, it seems a very gloomy business.”
Because Tolkien knew that behind every victory there is a mountain of human sacrifice and grief. He felt it, I feel it too. And it hurts me.

we as a society simply do not talk enough about how aragorns literal first act as king was to kiss a strange woman no one had met with full tongue in front of the whole ass kingdom and her dad

Thuggory: I'd never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with a Hooligan.
Hiccup: What about side-by-side with a friend?
Thuggory: Aye. I can do that.

I'm the one who organized our bookshelves because I'm autistic and neurotic about everything being in the right spot and Scribe mostly does not care as long as she can find things, but I did consult her when I was devising the system and my favorite moment was when I was putting together the shelf that goes:
Poetry ----> Epics/Medieval Lit ----> Tolkien -----> Languages
And at one point I told her "I put the one C.S. Lewis book next to the Tolkien section since it fit the theme so they can be friends" and she was immediately like "What?? Do we own by C.S. Lewis??" because our household consists of:
Me, has weird Narnia trauma, Jewish now
Her, grew up extremely non-religious and hisses like a cat at Christianity
(The answer was an anthology of his academic writing on medieval and Renaissance literature, which makes perfect sense for us, but it was her initial deep and utter confusion when I mentioned it than made me laugh)

Often they floundered, stepping or falling hands-first into waters as noisome as a cesspool, till they were slimed and fouled almost up to their necks and stank in one another's nostrils.
Makes you long for the neekerbreekers, doesn't it? 🥲

Ok, somehow I always saw the mlm ships floating around for LotR as just friendships, but now that I finished my reread of the Fellowship of the Ring I can say that Sam 100% has a crush on Frodo. So far, no idea if it's reciprocated even though Frodo cares for him, but there are no doubts about Sam's feelings for Frodo.
Blushing while taking his hand, "without even HIS Sam", he would die if he didn't go with Frodo because he wouldn't be able to bear it, "And I'm coming with you" and he was the only one that knew exactly what Frodo was feeling and what he was going to do and that is how he was able to find him even though Frodo was invisible... hello?
Legolas and Gimli didn't do much, but Gimli is very much into Galadriel for sure.
Also, consider this: Gandalf and Saruman. A friend told me the ship exists but I have never seen it, but let me tell you that the potential is there in Saruman's "everyone is dumb but us" speech.

I will say re Tolkien and food? He is actually very realistic about it (obviously special Elvish Way Bread and the world is distinct from ours in several ways but it’s very grounded). Also I adore what Tamora Pierce does in Tortall/Emelan with things like ‘fantasy version of instant noodles and dehydrated meals’ - also taking into account they have magic.

'Well, here is the strangest riddle that we have yet found!' exclaimed Legolas. 'A bound prisoner escapes both from the Orcs and from the surrounding horsemen. He then stops, while still in the open, and cuts his bonds with an orc-knife. But how and why? For if his legs were tied, how did he walk? And if his arms were tied, how did he use the knife? And if neither were tied, why did he cut the cords at all? Being pleased with his skill, he then sat down and quietly ate some waybread! That at least is enough to show that he was a hobbit, without the mallorn-leaf. After that, I suppose, he turned his arms into wings and flew away singing into the trees. It should be easy to find him: we only need wings ourselves!'
I love Legolas so much 😂

The point of an adaption is to capture the message and spirit of the original work. An adaption is not an AU. An adaption is not fanfic. An adaption is a translation, and while it cannot be a 1 to 1 translation, the spirit must remain. Otherwise you are doing your own thing. And if you want to do your own thing, please just own that! Watchmen (2019) did not claim to be an adaption to the comic or the disasterfail 2009 movie, it was positioned as a remix, and it was wildly successful and thoughtful about the original material while also having its own storyline. If you want to remix the material then by all means do so! Just be honest about what you’re doing.

Probably one of the first screenshots I took that inspired this account, got to love the Lord of the Rings reference from Rio’s Book 1 story.
