Poison into Positivity: A List of What I Liked in OFMD S2
Hello hello everyone! Things have been a little rough around here. Even away from the more heated takes, I've still seen a few "down in the dumps" murmurs. To which, I'm giving y'all big hugs, but also offering up some little bits of warmth! I wanted to share quite a few bullets of the things I enjoyed about this season. Maybe it'll serve as a reminder, or maybe it'll just serve as a chaotic, silly little read as per usual PFFF.
But I invite you to read along, and even add some of your own points should you feel inclined! Also, this might not even be my full list; these are just the ones that came to me quickly/off the top of my head. Still, let's dive on down like a fantastical, dazzling goldfish, shall we?
All the callbacks/parallels. My goodness. When I tell you I'm a SLUT for metaphors/parallels/callbacks/etc etc. Seeing so many things and being able to just *Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme.* I know people might not share that same opinion because some might view it to be excessive, but I personally LOVED being able to point at my screen and be like "oH EYYYYYYY!!!" Maybe because it makes for such immaculate gifset/meta material <3 SJKJDLHSK
The costuming and makeup. WHEN THEY TALKED AT ECCC ABOUT EVERYONE GETTING HOTTER, THEY WERE NOT KIDDING LMAO. EVERYONE LOOKED SO, SO GOOD. and listen, i am on my knees begging for them to give ed with his hair up back to us. i need Her back,,,ALSO, SOMETHING SOMETHING COMPLICATED EMOTIONS TOWARDS STEDE'S LATTER HALF LOOK, BUT ALSO...GOD DAMN, MR. DARBY,,,,,,
Speaking of Mr. Darby, the acting in this season. The ACTTTINNNGG. Everyone acted their ASSES off. Everyone put their entire piratussies into this season. Though, I'm PARTICULARLY impressed with Taika and Rhys, because again with their "oh we're comedians lol so idk drama can be Difficult Difficult Lemon Difficult." MMMM I THINK THE FUCK NOT, MY GUYS LMAO??? They both did SO well with all the drama and painful moments. The acting in episodes 2, 3, 6, and 7 in particular like...God. GOD!!!
I loved so many characters in this season, and I'll of course have to give two individual shoutouts to my two favorite new ladies, but man. LET'S GO FRENCHIE!!! ALWAYS A DELIGHT!!! FANG/KEVIN MY ABSOLUTE SWEETHEART. JIM SERVING ABSOLUTE FUCKING GENDER THIS SEASON. OLU OLU DARLING OLU. PETE NEVER MISSING WITH HIS ONELINERS. LUCIUS BEING SO THEATRICAL AHDJKSDK LIKE NATHAN PLEASE YOU KILL ME. ROACH MAKING ME LAUGH OUT LOUD NUMEROUS TIMES AS HE DOES. WEE JOHN AND HIS KNITTING AND DRAG!!! AND THEN OF COURSE MY DEARLY BELOVEDS, ED AND STEDE. I JUST LOVE THEMMMMM!!! But okay okay okay-
Zheng my beloved. I just love this badass pirate queen with her sweet little pigtails and her IMMACULATE LINE DELIVERIES SDHJKSKL. A lot of my favorite deliveries from the entire season came from her quite honestly. Please see: "Girl, how ARE you?" and "Hiiiiiii. I KNOWWW it's been a day" and "I've killed mediocre men. I've killed exceptional men. But you're the worst kind: a mediocre man who thinks he's exceptional."
AND ARCHIE MY BELOVED. She kills me because I remember seeing like, those ~*~audition tape whispers~*~ WAY back in the day, and subsequently thinking she was going to be quite a different character. Only for this silly goofy bubbly energetic darling to pop up and snag my heart. HER deliveries kill me also, like when she goes "Like...STEDE Stede?" and the whole "I was IN the fuckin' snake!" also hhngngngngnershkfhslkds tattooed ladies Hot :(
Speaking of which, the comedy. THE DELIVERIES. THE WAY I LAUGHED OUT LOUD NUMEROUS TIMES THROUGHOUT, EVEN WITH THE DEEP UNDERCURRENT OF DRAMA/ANGST. The whole bit where Stede is in hysterics over his cursed coat is just hsjkdhsklds; it will NEVER not make me wheeze. And then, like I said, almost EVERYTHING Pete says this season kills me; another thing that will never not make me laugh is "a doggie...?" weird little pirate show with weird little humor my beloved
The ROMANCE??? I genuinely was going into the season with the expectation of getting maybe like, one or two Gentlebeard kisses. Imagine my shock and utter delight when we ended up with FOUR, AS WELL AS AN INTIMATE SCENE, THE LETTER SCENES, AND THE LOVE PROFESSIONS. Like, one of them dropping a legitimate "I love you" felt like an unrealistic expectation--the HIGHEST dream tier really. And then wouldn't you know it. And that doesn't even account for all the rest of the couples either! The murder wives having their chaotic little moments of fucked up affection??? LUCIUS AND PETE GETTING ENGAGED AND THEN MARRIED??? HELLO??????
The sets! I know people have pointed out that the world felt a bit simplified this time around, due to budget restraints and what have you. But I still loved what they did with the world even with the various constraints. The market in episode 6 is a PARTICULAR favorite of mine; it's just so lush and colorful. I also love what they did with The Revenge during episode 6 too!
Also, this might be an unpopular opinion, but I really actually liked that they filmed on location. First of all, love that the Kiwis got to be right at home in Aotearoa. Love that they have an even more special connection to the show now. But second of all, I just like when scenery is...actually THERE? It feels way more TANGIBLE. Don't get me wrong; that hugeass wraparound screen that they use to film a lot of sets is a technological marvel. But I'm a sucker for practical.
The deeper and more complex dives into character motivations/trauma. Like, homie lol...When I tell you episodes 6 and 7 utterly set my brain alight in the best way possible. I was CHUGGING through thoughts. You know those gifs where someone is walking around and ranting/passionately talking,,, yeah. Yeah. Maybe because a lot of it "struck a chord" with me indeed, but I love love LOVE getting brain food like that.
Speaking of brain food, in PARTICULAR, the deeper dives into Ed's self-loathing and into Stede's troubles with confidence and masculinity. A lot of Stede's choices were fueled by those two things, and it was SO friggin fun to catch all of them, put them in a jar, and shake them around. I've seen a lot of people fearing his actions in the latter half were out of character, but to me, I don't see it that way. I just see a man who has been so spurned, so left behind, and SO deprived, a man who is stuck thinking he has to be someone else to mean something. And I think that plays a lot into even the EARLIEST developments we saw in season 1, so it was just so intriguing to watch everything messily play out.
THE INNKEEPER. THE INNKEEPER MY BELOVED. SO much about that episode absolutely has my heart. All the different developments, the stakes, the pacing, and the payoff at the end. Not to mention that I had a FEELING that mysterious figure in the trailers was Hornigold, so it was so SO validating to see him pop up PFFF. And also, all those dream/gravy basket sequences were so so good too. I don't know if it's the chemistry between Taika and Mark, or the deeper symbolism, or the lines that have become vocal stims for me SJKDLS (please see: ooOOoooO eddie eddie eddie...you're laying some heavy shit on me, bro), but man. MAN.
And this one gets its own bullet because of course it does: the fucking mermaid scene. Like, are we kidding. ARE WE KIDDING. THE ROMANCE OF IT ALL? THE FANTASTICAL-NESS INDEED?? THE WAY IT WAS ALL FUCKING PRACTICAL AND RHYS SWAM DOWN TO TAIKA AS A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GOLDFISH AND THEY HAD TO THROW HEART EYES AT EACH OTHER UNDERWATER??? WHAT THE FUCK!!! And don't even get me started on Kate Bush lol. This Woman's Work might easily be one of my favorite songs, if not my FAVORITE song from the season. And man. Man. The whole meaning behind Ed seeing Stede as this beautiful, sparkly being, and not some hypermasculine/extraordinary thing. He fell in love with Stede for who Stede really is. And so I ADORE that acknowledgement.
Speaking of songs, the MUSIC!!! Absolute bangers all throughout. And I loved how there seemed to be even more intermixed within the episodes. Like God... "These are the kids..." 🗣️ HELLO MY LOVE I HEARD A KISS FROM YOU 🦗🦟🦗🦟🦗🦟 . And all the beautiful classic piano pieces and NINA SIMONE AND JUST HSJKDHSFJKLHSKD????
Okay, I've always had and STILL have complicated thoughts and opinions on Izzy, but man, seeing him interact with the Revenge Crew was really something. Seeing Stede's influence come over the lot of them like a warm blanket, extending its welcoming and familial hands...It was just lovely. I love seeing our little sea family care for each other so much. They've probably all hurt so so much in different ways, so to see them all being a collective heart is just so nice.
Speaking of which, the queerness of it all, the queer celebration of it all. The way the whole crew is just...a representation of queer people finding each other, and subsequently finding love and family in each other. Like, when the whole world wants to cast you out, you pull each other in. When no one else wants you, you take refuge in each other. And just...the joy, beauty, and wonder that can be found in that.
And speaking of which x2, the overall care that was put into the entire thing, the effort that was put into the entire thing. I know Max fucked us over with the budget, which subsequently fucked things like the intricacy, the amount of characters, and especially the pacing. But, I don't know; I personally could still tell everyone involved was trying so so hard to deliver for us. Based on the little details, the little callbacks, and the little moments that felt so catered to us, it just seemed so...gifted to us. Not to mention of course, the way they so deliberately chose to end on a hopeful note in case we never get a third season. They care about us. They've always cherished our excitement and passion, so it just...idk; it feels so special to have a bit more of an intimate connection like that. I've never been involved with a piece of media that so avidly SEES its audience, and celebrates along with us. So, despite everything, despite any sort of troubles, despite any sort of lows, that's a big part of what has me clutching all of this so closely to my chest. And I really hope they can still see that love, because I want nothing more than for them to see this beautiful story through.
Also, getting to enjoy this with everyone. Getting to ride the wave from the beginning of filming, all the way through the finale. Getting to see all the excitement, all the theories, all the art, all the fanfiction, all the gif sets, all the meta, and everything in between. It has carried me through some nastiness in my personal life, and has subsequently served as a very welcomed distraction. It's been such a pleasure getting to delight in this new content with you all, and I hope we get to do so into the future. <3

All of what you said about WoT costuming, AND ALSO.... after the WoT peeps went to such lengths to make Lanfear hot SPECIFICALLY in a gay way.... they were told to costume the hottest bitch in all of the land, and they chose pantsuits, high necks, lots of structure, bold headdresses.... do these people not know how badly this could have gone. How many dumb stilettos we could've been saddled with. The costuming department is here feeding us and they get treated this way. Where is the gratitude!!
Okay, maybe not stilettos. You know what a lesser costume department would have done. They would have put the poor woman in a corset WITH NO SHIFT BENEATH IT. Just chafe the poor actress to the next turn of the wheel.
oh this is SO true and a great point!! they made lanfear incredibly sexy but without fetishizing/objectifying her or sexy-lamp-ify-ing her, or really catering to The Male Gaze in any way. and instead catering to The Gay Gaze, god bless! i definitely shudder to think what Onscreen Lanfear would've been like in the hands of a different production team or if the show were being made 10 years ago
but thankfully, it seems like most viewers are in total agreement that s2 costumes knocked it out of the park with lanfear's being the big standout! i'm not sure i've seen anyone lodge complaints besides those 2 people today (one of whom didn't even know what the show was and was just seeing an out-of-context gifset on their dash), which is why i was so baffled and indignant hahaha

Only Friends as a morality drama, groupthink & media literacy
I can't find the clip now, but Off was on GMMTV Live House and asked if people were watching Only Friends. And he then made a comment saying it's like a morality drama. And I really like that he said that because yes, Only Friends is making us think about what we would do in these situations, but also try to understand why do these characters or people in general behave the way they do.
I don't get the moral comparisons between the characters. Because if your barometer for a person is just that they are just better than another person, your bar is LOW? Or this couple is better than the other? Because in real life, is your barometer for a relationship just that it's better than someone else's relationship? Does your own romantic partner need to be the one who is deemed the most popular choice? Or do your own life decisions have to be what others would do in your situation?
Different choices for different people 👏 And who has a right to judge you for your life decisions? They don't know why or how you came to that decision.
I used to be really black and white about cheating in real life, but now I don't know, real life is FAR more complicated and grey. And we actually still don't know if Mew considered it cheating. He's still never outright says it. He always says "what you did to me," so it's debatable.
But accountability is a big theme in the show. There might be a reason why you behave the way you do, but it does not excuse your actions, you still have to take responsibility for it. Literally all the characters have to pay the piper/take accountability for what they do... except a certain someone who shall not be named.
In fandom as well as life, it is extremely easy to surround yourself with only opinions that validate your own. I am actually really against this kind of surreal groupthink/hive mentality thing happening in this fandom.
And I just want anyone coming across this post to know it's okay to not share the same opinion. Do not think that just because an opinion is popular that it's right.
I always for representing the minority opinion. Representation ALWAYS. I think society as a whole is better when different people share their different POVs. If the opinions on this site about OF were more fair and not so quick to romanticize some characters or villainize others, I probably would have not started posting opinions and just come on Tumblr to reblog some gifsets to be honest.
I've seen people say "someone told me this or that about these actors" or "from what I've seen about what people said about Mew on reddit, he is a master manipulator" and "the people I follow said" some even in tags on my own posts and I'm like "you realize what you just said/admitted to, right??"
Somebody TOLD you what to think and that's why you think that way. I will be honest, I would be embarrassed to say that out loud. And it's okay if you didn't realize you were doing it. (I didn't always myself. I've just had a lot of trips around the sun to figure out that groupthink should always be challenged.)
But if you recognize yourself doing this, start to ask "who is presenting this information? What is their bias? What is their motive? Are you being told what to think? Be really wary of people who make big statements without support.
I am upfront about my bias, you will see it right away from my blog, but I am more interested in the art because to romanticize some characters or villainize others just because you have a CP preference is just a NO for me.
Everyone gets judged fairly by the same measuring stick 👏
Only Friends is art created by MANY. Not just what the characters say and the acting on the screen. The world was constructed by Jojo and Ninew, Den, Best, filming, lighting, costuming, set design, etc.
Who is this character? How have they been characterized? What do they know? What don't they know? What could be motivating them to behave this way?
What is creator's intent? This is Thai media made for a Thai audience. While we have access to OF because it's on Youtube, we are not the original intended audience.
What Western or International perspective could we have that affects why we view things differently than the characters do or the Thai audience would? This is such a silly example, but I was and am still kind of triggered by it. In the episode 5 scene of TopMew at dinner, Mew got flack for how he eats. And I just want you to know that dining etiquette is not standardized around the world. When my dad first immigrated, his coworkers also gave him flack about this and he still fucking remembers the story 30 years later, so yeah actually I still feel strongly about this. Anyway, the Thai reactors only thought that Mew looked classy/expensive because he knows how to swirl a wine glass.
Is the reason you think this because the show is telling you to think that by how they film the scenes, music, etc? I always said that TopMew's lack of romantic suspense in the early episodes didn't make sense because all these characters exist in the same universe. They are written, filmed, and directed by the same people. And a lingering close-up on hands with accompanying romantic music is NOT acting, that's filming and art direction.
What personal perspectives or worldviews do we bring to our approach to media, etc, etc? The list goes on.
I actually didn't know what this is called until now but I've seen people mention media literacy and looked it up just now. Turns out this is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is there a take-away? Err, don't be a sheep. Decide for yourself what you think. And don't discredit art created by a whole ton of people just because you only care about certain actors.

I feel like there's a lot of 911/buddie analysis that hinges on the blue and green thing and feel like that could be confusing if you're not deep in the madness and I kinda wanted to make a post about the blue and green thing in a more general sense.
One thing about the show is that costumes and sets are very carefully built, so when things happen more than once, they probably do mean the show is trying to establish a pattern. The blue and green thing with couples is one of them. Maddie and Chim are the easiest to spot in my opinion, because we see a lot of change happen in their relationship.
Tumblr media
But it's not a Chim and Maddie thing, we see it happen with most couples. Sometimes it's a big moment for the couple, like when madney find out they're having a girl, when henren decide to foster, but it's not really necessary for it to be a big moment, like bathena on this first screenshot here are just getting home from a run.
Tumblr media
And not just couples that we know are meant to be, like the ones listed above but also ones we see end on screen, like Eddie and Ana, Buck and Taylor, and also Buck and Ali (but I can't get a decent screenshot).
Tumblr media
But it doesn't stop with couples involving the main characters, there are actually a lot of instances with random couples in calls in blue and green. (In order, girl trapped in a window after the first date call on 3x12, girl who fell into the septic tank call on 4x12, parents of a girl on the parade crash on 5x04, guy with amnesia after a car crash on 5x18)
Tumblr media
Or just people adjacent to the main cast like Albert and Veronica and Josh and Carson. So, it's a very real thing they do.
Tumblr media
You can click keep reading here for some buddie thoughts now.
The show only put Buck and Eddie both in blue and green in 2 instances, at the beginning of mixed feelings and at the beginning of love is in the air, which is interesting on its own considering the theme of both episodes, with mixed feelings having the domestic buddie of our dreams, the poker date and all that, and the whole concept of love is in the air with Eddie trying to find a date and Buck trying to date while getting visited by the ghosts of girlfriend past, because even though Buck is wearing blue on the date with Natalia, she's not really wearing green, she has a green detailing on her dress, but since she keeps her denim jacket on, they both can be seen as the blue character, and that doesn't follow the pattern and Eddie is nowhere near the blue and green color palette. But the crazy thing here is the way that both instances Buck and Eddie are wearing blue and green match previous uses of the colors with them and past canon relationships.
Tumblr media
Nothing in this show is an accident, they did this on purpose and it's insane really. I really wanna see the evolution of this situation because up until 6b they were really careful with this particular implication of romantic undertones with buddie and that's out the window now, so let's see where it goes.
(I made gifsets on this if you want to reblog something pretty about it oskaoska eddie and blue buck and green)

I’ve only ever seen Phantom on Broadway, and I’ve been so curious how the show looked in comparison when it went on tour. I’ve asked family members who saw it, but they don’t have the same level of interest in shows that I do, so they couldn’t remember any specifics. How would they do the chandelier and the candelabras coming out of the stage? Or the theatre de-aging at the beginning? Was there a proscenium constructed for the Phantom to do his appearances during Il Muto? Or the moment with the angel? Thank you in advance for all your Phantom knowledge! ❤️
Well, it depends on the tour you're talking about.
The Phantom of the Opera has had four tours in the United States (and also Canada, which the third and fourth tours went to). The first three tours, which collectively ran from 1989-2010, were extremely similar to Broadway in almost everything: sets, costumes, blocking, even the actors (many actors would get their start on the tour then move to Broadway, or switch back and forth between them). If there were any changes, it would be very minor and done because the theater they were in did not have capability to do a certain thing, e.g. the Red Death running offstage instead of going down a trapdoor. So whatever they do on Broadway, assume it is done the same way in the first three national tours.
The fourth tour is what a lot of fans called the restaged tour, as it radically altered all of the above, while still retaining just enough of the look to show that it was inspired by the replica. I've made this gifset and this post explaining the differences, but to also answer your specific questions:
The chandelier is already half-raised when the show starts and covered in a sheet. During the Overture, the sheets are sucked into the chandelier and it rises to where it will be for the rest of the show (until it falls of course).
There are no candelabras in the Phantom's lair in the restaging, apart from some small ones on his desk. The candles float from the ceiling (actually the inside of a big "drum set").
As there is much less in the way of drapery and backdrops to move around, the de-aging is done mostly with the actors. As the chandelier rises (a short distance), Raoul remains onstage. The rest of the people at the auction move offstage and are replaced with the various dancers and actors for Hannibal, moving in a dream-like manner. As Raoul goes offstage, they move into rehearsal mode, indicating we are now fully in "the past". Finally the boxes spin into view and a false proscenium is lowered.
There is a false proscenium, as indicated above, but the Phantom does not use it; when the chandelier drops, he is in one of the boxes instead.
There is no Golden Angel in the restaged tour either; instead, the Phantom sings his reprise on an anatomically correct Apollo statue that is on the stage floor.
If you want even more information about the restaged tour (again, the previous three national tours were virtually identical to Broadway so I assume you don't need more info about them), you can also take a look at a bootleg here. I hope that helps!

I was tagged by @bright-thorn in a quick get-to-know-you game, and what the heck. I've got time before a meeting, so let's do this!
Tag nine (9) people you'd like to know better!
Last song: "Doo Wop (That Thing)," Ms. Lauryn Hill. Today was our first day back in the classroom for pre-planning, and I have a million things I need to do before I have kiddos in front of me on August 1st. And because one of the things I have to do is check transcripts for all of my rosters-- gotta make sure that my seniors aren't missing any graduation requirements, gotta keep an eye out for ELL and 504 and IEP and gifted services, gotta check that no new transfers have duplicate credits, or aren't placed correctly-- I was working my way through a lot of old favorites today as background music. Stuff that would keep me awake and focused so I wouldn't miss anything critical-- and that I knew well enough for it to not be distracting. So The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill fit the bill and was my last selection of the day.
Currently reading: Oh, like four different things. The City of Brass, by S.A. Chakraborty, which I started reading ages ago and then got distracted by life, so I've started over. A Memory Called Empire, by Arkady Martine, which I started reading during the early summer of 2020 and absolutely adored-- and then both my parents needed major surgeries within the same week, and a week later my gallbladder gave out on me-- and in the chaos and haze of am-I-dying-or-is-my-gallbladder-infected, I couldn't concentrate on it. So I've started it again as well, and it's so brilliant. I love it. But it does take me immediately back to that godawful summer in a very visceral way, which makes me somewhat uncomfortable. A couple of historical murder mysteries. And I've just started The Anarchy by William Dalrymple, which is about the role of the British East India company in South Asia.
Currently watching: Literally? I've got the replay of Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes on right now because I couldn't watch it live. (Stupid having to work for a living.) In the greater sense, I've just finished watching The Law According to Lidia Poet on Netflix, which hits all sorts of buttons for me, because I do love a good period mystery show-- especially if it's not set in the UK. Plus the costuming is fabulous. I'm two episodes into the second season of Shadow & Bone, but-- eh, I dunno. I really am only interested in one or two of the storylines, so I'm not sure I'm going to finish it.
Current obsession: I am so sorry to everyone who has suddenly been thrown into my rabid cycling fandom, especially if you started following me for, like, Andor stuff or whatever. I'll be somewhat normal again soon, I promise, and will only occasionally reblog GIFsets of Wout van Aert doing Wout van Aert-ish things until it's time for the Vuelta. What you have to understand is that this is not a new thing for me: I've been following men's pro cycling in the form of the Tour de France since I was... twelve? Thirteen? That's when I got seriously into long-distance cycling for a while, there. And while I'm nowhere near as fit as I used to be and the week-long cycling journeys my dad and I used to do are now well out of my reach, I still watch cycling obsessively. It used to be just the Tour de France, and then I started following riders and related folks on various social media platforms, and then started listening to podcasts, and then I started watching the other Grand Tours, and the past several years I've also gotten sucked into watching the spring Classics, and now I've also fallen down the rabbit hole of women's pro cycling, too. And as an obsession it is at its most all-consuming every year during July, which is when the Tour is on-- and I live blog the whole thing. (Not on this platform, although I've considered it.) Like, I do detailed narrative stage-by-stage write ups. The document for this year's total recap wound up being 46k words long, so. Yeah. Definitely an obsession, and it's one that everyone around me just has to kind of learn to live with during the summer every year.
And if you would like to answer these questions yourself, please consider yourself tagged! I love learning things about folks.

top 10 gifsets you've made the year - go go go!!!
HI HEY HELLO thank you for this very unexpected question I will be happy to answer it for you and also for me!!
We're gonna start at 10 and work our way down :) I will say that these aren't technically in order of my favourite, it's more about how objectively good I think they are, but obviously my personal preference is coming into play a bit too.
10: Klaine + stages of their relationship. This is a pretty simple one but I think that works in its favour, it's a fun concept and I think I did a really good job with the colouring (which is an area I feel like I've improved on a lot this year).
9: Kurtofsky as king and queen of hearts. I think this concept is SUPER cool, it's something very different from a lot of other things I've done and I think it came out really well. I really like the reds and the reflections and just yeah I think it's neat. There are some things I would probably change if I were to do it now, but overall I'm still pretty happy with it.
8: Klaine duets on Spotify. I love a good Spotify gifset and I also think I did a good job with the colouring on this one.
7: New Directions + Seasons of Love lyrics (not the scene from the show, just using the lyrics). I love how warm this is, I like the text effects I ended up with, and it just has a really warm cozy vibe. It feels special to me. And it was a gift, so that makes it extra special.
6: Kurtcedes in 4 Minutes. This isn't very complicated but I think the colours REALLY pop and I think I did a good job with picking what clips to use and the fonts and all that.
5: Kurt + Gin Joints lyrics. This bitch LOVES a good glitch effect and she loves a good b&w vs colour contrast and she loves a lyric gifset and she loves some mixed fonts featuring a cursive. This might not be the best gifset in the list technically but it IS the one that I think about the most often it replays in my head frequently I love it a lot.
4: Klaine in Come What May. I killed it with the colouring and that smoke effect is super cool. I refuse to be modest because I know this set is a banger.
3: Puck's Kiss Costume. I think the colouring in this slaps and the text effects/font choices are pretty cool and work super well with the set and the layout works really well too, just all around some great choice and execution on my part imo.
2: Kurtofsky in Prom Queen. When I started making this I never expected to love it as much as I do. But I just think it's really gorgeous. I love the colours mixed with the black and white. I think the blending turned out really well, I sometimes struggle there so I'm really happy I pulled it off so well here. I love the effect of the simple font and the line down the center pulling it all together, and then the jagged line and the glitching text at the bottom I just want to SCREAM it makes me feel things. I don't know if you're supposed to say stuff like that about your own creations but I'm saying it anyway. But yeah. I just think I did a great job. And this one was a gift, too, which is fun.
1: Santana + Epiphany lyrics. I think this is probably my best gifset of the year technically speaking. On top of having some top notch colouring, it's also got some great blending, overlays, text animation, and a fun funky layout gif too. It's just a really cohesive set and I spent a lot of time on it (and so did you lol) and it turned out really really soft and pretty. I'm not usually a gold/yellow/orange girlie when I make gifs and when this was conceived that's not what it was going to be, but I am really glad it turned out that way because I think it really works!

Shadow & Bone s2 thoughts
S1 of shadow and bone was a surprise favorite show; I’ve rewatched it a lot as something to watch when I’m cooking or wanted something familiar and comfortable.
After last season I tried reading the books; I didn’t finish Seige and Storm because I kept negatively comparing book Alina, Mal, and Darkling to their show versions. I did like the Six of Crows series but have no interest in the other books. So I’ve got a vague idea on the plot points unlike when I watched s1
Oh I really like the map to cgi city transitions, and the wanted posters as establishing shots for storyline transitions
Sturmhond meeting the Crows like this, this is so much more fun than the book intro of him
I don’t remember seeing Jasper’s gun misfire in s1 or see gifsets of him fixing it.
Tolya and Tamar get a cool intro camera pan and theyre both really hot
Huh Darkling intro very different than the book, honestly he comes off as someone who spent a bit too much time alone by himself than menacing
How come in pirate clothes Sturmhond becomes the most baby faced of the cast
Love Alina’s stag antler embroidery dress, I’d love to wear a dress with that kind of neckline
Having one of Kaz’s plans go wrong and it not be something he accounts for, really ups the tension and makes Pekka Rollins a threat, and he’s actually more threatening than the Darkling. Wolf mask guy is just a creep, the costume kinda felt out of place
I expected the flying ship look more aerodynamic and either there’s a lot more flying ships or the show really glossed over them being repaired after being totaled because it needed characters to move around in ways they didn’t in the book
“Who do you want standing in that door when the lion gets hungry” then cut to a taxidermied lion. Lmao fun transition
This is one of the shows where I find basically all of the main cast attractive, very much including Inej in a knife fight
“All that matters is we know what’s real” with a political engagement, damn this is so much better than the YA jealousy drama of the books
OFMD AND S&B, edgy dude after his love abandons him starts cutting off the digits of the people who drove the breakup
Rip to Matthias because the show didn’t seem to know what to do with him, I enjoy his plotline much more than s1 but its because he has such low screentime
The costume budget and workmanship is so good this show as it covers so many different styles and cultural influences
Bloody beaten up Kaz threatening as he gets his long awaited revenge is fucking incredible top moment of the season, especially because for Pekka “but for me, it was a Tuesday” he just couldn’t remember
Genya’s really going through it this season and characters mistreating her is a more understandable and relatable evil than vague war crimes. “I should be your greatest shame!” and “ask me how I did it” she gets some great moments
Mal’s capture then causal return felt like an awkward plot point, like it shows up here because maybe it happened in the book
Huh for a major season 1 character and a global Big Bad threat the Darkling really isn’t getting much material this season, he just sits around and broods in a dark room while his underlings who wear lots of eyeshadow (to show they’re evil) do things. Like early on in the season he seemed sick but then he isn’t, then he just gives up all his action items about Grisha revolution to chase after Alina
Actually very curious about how much screentime Kaz’s dead brother gets vs the Darkling lmao
I didn’t realize at the height difference between Kaz and Inej until she hallucinated them almost hooking up. Eps 4-8 I watched playing a drinking game of take a drink for every romantic moment
The show really contrasted The Disciple and Neyar have such a good relationship compared to whatever the fuck toxic parent child relationship of Baghra and Aleksander
Great that the Darkling and Mal can interact and bonus its in some weird fucked up way (dead peoples bones), there isn’t enough of that in fandom or canon
The final battle has basically no tactics just people running around for cool dramatic timing, especially the Crows fighting in the frontlines
Darkling died in this show like he lived in s2, anti-climatically standing around downbad for Alina
Tbh there’s a lot of sex that could be done with gloves and clothes on
Lmao where is Feydor he didn’t appear at all
Things I didn’t expect: David being killed off early RIP, Alina not losing her powers and faking her death to live with Mal but instead this weird non emotional breakup, and Zoya to not get more character backstory
Think it's interesting the contrast of the bee highlighted by the camera during the Darkling’s funeral as a subtle hint to the Elizaveta plotline vs the last few minutes throwing in: Jurda Parem, Nikolai’s shadow monster infection, a future war with Fjerda, Alina using shadows, all as continuation bait if it gets another season
Verdict: enjoyable season 2, I’m so glad this season got about 15 minutes more per episode so it could cover the full Grisha trilogy in case it gets the infamous netflix s2 cancel. Still a favorite show because its  the perfect mix of drama, romance, and just enough writing cracks for fun AUs. The show covered a lot in the 8 hours with a fast moving plot that I watched over 2 days, so I’m very curious how my opinion of plot points will change with distance and reading others perspectives

(this is so random sorry in advance) but hi!! i love the gifsets you've done of captain marvel's mcu suits and it reminds me that i was wondering....... are there any statuettes or any merchandise at all of her in her first endgame suit?? and also semi-related... do you own any statuettes of her? if so, any recs? (no need to answer this of course)
Do NOT apologise, because I love talking to people about this kind of stuff and love how Andy Park designed her costumes! I only wish I had an answer for you 🥲 Most of the merch I saw of her around the time of Endgame just had her in her original costume, probably to avoid spoilers? Which is a shame, because I loved those gold shoulders and the star, they stood out really well. Maybe @brielarsonist or @captspaceface would know, they're two of the major Brie/Carol enjoyers on this website!
And I do have statuettes/figures of her! The collector edition of her Hot Toy, her second Iron Studios statue, and this one (which is way overpriced, I got mine for about 30). If you have spare money for Hot Toys, I'd recommend either of hers based on looks alone, but be warned: because of the suit material, you can't articulate it very much due to ripping. If you have lots of spare cash, I hear there are plenty of people who do statue commissions on Instagram, but I've never done that myself.

I guess it depends. But in that one gifset with tom hugging chris in their costumes and chris is doing the back pat thing is legit something i read abt how Australian men hug friends. Tomorrow is a brit so lol. Its not that they don't care I think its toxic masculinity from society
I think that's a thing for a lot of men around the western world at least (I know some men in the middle east do show more affection towards each other). They don't want to appear vulnerable as if that would make them weaker or something, there's a bit of homophobia in it as well... I agree it's not that they don't care, they have been socialized that way.
It's funny when you see women hugging each other and grabbing each other's arms and never letting go and no one thinks anything of it, it's so normalized. This is one of those occasions where the patriarchy hurts men too, they should work on it with one another. I know there are some comforting and supporting websites out there, they could try them out (I've heard r/menslib and r/bropill on reddit are pretty good at this).
From what Elsa says, Chris seems to be a great guy so there's that. (I don't know them obviously but since Elsa is from here I heard her talk about him several times and she's so lovely... they make a cute couple).

I’ve never watched wheel of time but I will say that I think something to be said for the debate about costuming is that the game of thrones costumes were INSANE when it came to quality and detail. At least in the first few seasons they were hand-sewn, hand-embroidered, etc. There was a big coffee table type book about them that broke down a lot of the choices the costume designers and department made and the quality of that department still blows me away!!! They were gorgeous and complex and took so much of the worldbuilding and politics into account!
And from what I’ve seen, it seems like the Wheel of Time costumes do the same, it’s just that they draw from very different references and eras!! Maybe there will be some kind of bts/special feature breakdown of what they referenced and the different ideas they drew from for the costuming for WOT. That seems like it would be a good time. It’s really annoying and really unfortunate that a lot of people refuse to see past their own preconceptions of what fantasy means. I’m sorry that so many people are making assumptions about fantasy costuming in your notes, especially. It’s a genre that spans much wider than lotr and game of thrones! Perhaps more people should. Idk. Engage with it more and find that out. Maybe that would fix them.
yeah!! haha it really was just 2 complaints in my notes on a gifset that otherwise had universal gushing about how much people loved the costumes, so thankfully most people are enjoying the WOT costumes (and not being annoying in my notes) and i was definitely being dramatic in my complaints about the complaints! still, there's something to be said about how ingrained ideas of "this is what fantasy costumes are Supposed to look like" are in us, when fantasy as a genre MEANS there's no set definition of what ANYTHING is "supposed" to be.
i didn't watch GOT but i've seen plenty of gifs etc over the years, of course, and the costumes are absolutely beautiful and very detailed! and from what i understand, the books were going for a medieval europe type of vibe for the main kingdoms and so in that respect the show's costumes definitely understood the assignment (tho ofc with their own added Fantasy Flavor). the downside is that they were so influential that it's made a lot of people subconsciously think that that is THE fantasy aesthetic (along with LOTR), and thus anything too different looks out of place to them.
there have been a couple WOT costume bts features that i've seen, and the designers did indeed do similar things where they showed how much stuff was handmade and how detailed everything is, and they talked about taking inspiration from many different real-world cultures & time periods as well! a lot of which is based on the way the author described clothes in the books and the real-world fashion influences he was using. i remember in a season 1 bts the costume designer had a map of WOT's world color-coded according to which real-world cultures are the primary inspirations for the dress of each region of WOTworld (although i think it's a different costume designer for season 2 so i don't know if they adhered 100% to the s1 designer's notes).
to conclude, here are some caps from a scene in s1 that features a large international gathering (same color=same wizard faction, but within each faction are women of many different cultures, so you can see for example that our 4 blue ladies are wearing 4 very different styles). i wouldn't say these are the best costumes in the show because season 2 really took it up a notch (hello, higher budget!), but this particular scene is a great quick illustration of the wide variety of styles going on in the vast continent of WOTworld and of how much detail goes into costumes even for nameless background characters. and most of them do feature the sort of clean lines/angularity that makes our brains go "modern", and most of them do look quite different from the GOT & LOTR aesthetics!

“Massive Talent” is a masterpiece (and other mini reviews)
Before we get into the cage with Nic Cage (see what I did there?), here’s what else I’ve watched this month:
The Thief of Bagdad (1940): The adventure fantasy film that would later go on to inspire Disney’s Aladdin. Seriously, you could play a drinking game counting all the things Disney would use in not only the movie but also the TV series! The prince’s beggar disguise looks exactly like Aladdin’s outfit. Anyway, this movie obviously leans on dated stereotypical Orientalism, it’s still worth watching. And it’s the titular character Abu (played by Sabu) that’s the actual hero, and not the (white) prince character. So there’s that.
The Mosquito Coast: Harrison Ford has the worst midlife crisis ever and drags his family out to Central America to live out his twisted fantasies. It doesn’t end well.
Lolita (1997): As controversial as the story was back then, it REALLY looks bad in the harsh light of today. Especially because this version uses the male gaze a lot for Lolita’s scenes. And far more explicitly than the original film.
Beauty and the Beast (2014): You’ve probably already seen all the gifsets from this French film adaptation of the fairy tale, and the costumes were indeed gorgeous. Story-wise, however, it’s the worst version I’ve seen. I’m sorry, but this Belle and the Beast barely even bond before the ending, which just adds more fuel to the Stockholm Syndrome fire.
Wendy: In contrast, this modern version of Peter Pan was intriguing.
No Time to Die: Mom and I watched this on Amazon Prime. Not much of a Bond fan, but it was a good way for Daniel Craig to go out.
Hustle: Adam Sandler’s best movie in years. Even better than Uncut Gems. Watch it on Netflix ASAP.
And now, the main course:
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: Nicolas Cage meets his number-one fan (Pedro Pascal). This was HILARIOUS. Nic Cage has decided to fully embrace his crazy-ass image and he did it beautifully! Him and Pascal also have the best romantic chemistry; they clearly had just as much of a ball making this movie as you will watching it. Even if you don’t even like Cage films, you should watch this immediately, because it might be one of the best movies of this year.

i have shed my skin, look at me now | effigy.5
Ah. This is more like it. This is what he was expecting, what he had prepared himself for. The bitter rage, the derision, the betrayal.
Thank you, Hisashi. Thank you, Poppy. Thank you, Nike. You truly are putting on a hell of a show.
Micah has to quickly sidestep to avoid Poppy's spit on his hooves (gross), and he sheds the Party City jacket in the process- it gets bundled up and chucked back in Raoul's direction, now a little bit goopier for his efforts. There's a worm in one sleeve. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
"Wow. Rude, Hisashi. I'll have you know the bait and switch was my idea, thanks. After someone got into somewhere they weren't meant to be, my master was worried that there might be a repeat performance with the Vault. Furthermore, all of you were getting a little too full of yourself. Leading you on and shooting you down at the last moment was the best way to fix both of those problems."
He tilts his head to look at the nearest camera. Raises his eyebrow. Vaguely wonders if, depending on how the rest of this trial pans out, that's going to be turned into a gifset on Tumblr by the end of the night.
"Also, can't you read? I was responsible for giving out those trinkets from past contestants, feeding my boss info on what you were doing, keeping an eye on the perimeter with the imps, testing the minigames and helping finetune the executions. I kept beating the shit out of that fake brother in yours, by the way. After a while they just assumed that you'd lose the fight and got me to move on, even though I thought he was still weak enough that you'd overpower him. But you didn't. Sad."
Now he tilts his head to look at Poppy. It's true, isn't it? There are so many parallels you could draw between them. But that's the thing about parallel lines- they never connect.
"Treacherous to the end, yes, yes, that's me. Why are you surprised? You realize that Cinnamoroll suit had a grown man in it the entire time, don't you?"
But no point rubbing salt in the wound. Nike, next.
"This is all pretty much exactly as planned, yes. Nothing anyone has said and done here is changing the course of things. If you want to take a swing at me, feel free. You can join Touji and Poppy in punching my teeth out. That also isn't going to change anything. Except, of course, just leaving a lot of teeth littered around the place. Gross."
(Micah wonders who's going to have to clean the teeth up. Then he thinks about squeezing the imps into tiny proper Victorian maid costumes and giving them tiny dustpans. It's a brief bit of levity in an otherwise endless ocean of misery and he is grateful for it. Something tells him that nobody would appreciate it if he spoke his vision out loud, though.)

Ghosts for the ask game :3c
Oooo since I did CBS ghosts I'll do this one as BBC Ghosts! >:3c
Answers will be less...less because I'm not really invested in it as much though
Favourite character: Allison 100%...I love her so much. Closely followed up by Fanny. Funniest character: Ohhh this one is hard...probably Robin? I think Robin gets the most laughs out of me, he is incredibly entertaining to watch Best-looking character: Toss up between Kitty and Mary for me, I like their costumes the most!! I do love Fannys commitment to being entirely beige though. It's a look 3 favourite ships: IIIIII don't have any for this series! Oops. Least favourite character: I would say Julien, because I don't like him that much, but that's the like, entire point of his character, to be unlikeable in the way that he is, so I don't want to say he really is my least favorite character because I think they've done an incredible job writing him the way that they have. I love the BBC's commitment to sticking to the bit. Least favourite ship: Don't have one entirely just because of I don't know the ships very well. Do people ship Allison/Thomas? Probably that one Reason why I watch it: It's just really funny! Like CBS I love the concept of this forced-by-circumstance found family amongst supernatural beings who have spend decades in miserable boredom trying to communicate across their generational gaps. The casts chemistry is so fun <3 Why I started watching it: Just saw a lot of gifsets of it on tumblr and it looked really fun! I know this was the original version of CBS, and since I wanted to watch CBS I decided to watch this one first so I could see what the differences between them were. I really liked BBC, and I think that the pacing of their episodes is better, but it didn't really snag me the way that the CBS version did (probably because they don't have Hetty :/)

re: the gilded age, it’s by the same guy who did downton abbey, but filmed in new york, so you get a lot of competent theater actors milling around on period sets in incredibly elaborate outfits. most of the main cast is solid (carrie coon’s character and her husband from the gifset, christine baranski owns any scene she’s in, and i also really liked denee benton). only major quibble castingwise is that one of the lead girls sucks the energy out of every scene she’s in (she’s nepo baby supreme i.e. meryl streep’s daughter), but her scene partner can usually rescue it. TLDR if you like pretty costumes and playing spot-the-broadway-person, it’s a fun way to spend a few hours!
ooh thanks, that does sound right up my alley, i love elaborate costumes AND playing spot-the-broadway person.
(i hope you don't mind me publishing this, it was too funny not to keep.)
