[SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 140-150]
It’s very interesting to me how the downfall of the demon aristocracy can be put down to what they didn’t do as much as what they actually did. Their silence and inaction hurt Geelan just as much, if not more, than the punishment they inflicted upon him and his clan.
This is most evident in the relationship between Geelan and the past and present Lord Bayons.
In the flashback, we see Lord Bayon I is the only one to attempt to see the reason in Geelan’s solution to the famine. But it’s only an attempt, and a feeble one at that, easily drowned out by the outraged shouts of his fellow nobles.
Tumblr media
Lord Bayon never attempts to raise his voice again, even after Geelan’s rousing speech in favour of helping the citizens. This would be the perfect time to let his voice be heard, to give support, but instead he says nothing and allows Yverk to put an end to the discussion with nothing accomplished to help the situation.
He appears uncomfortable. He agrees with Geelan, or at least sees merit in his argument, but he dares not speak. By failing to speak, he leaves Geelan without any support amongst the nobles, a lone fighter against an immensely powerful group who prioritise their own interests over those of the people.
Tumblr media
By isolating Geelan, Bayon unknowingly leaves him open to manipulation and rash decision-making to try and get the change he wants done. And we know how that turned out.
When Geelan learns of the betrayal, particular focus is given to Bayon I.
Tumblr media
His face appears troubled, but there he is, all the same, participating with his fellow nobles. He doesn’t like it, yet he tolerates it - and complies with it. Considering his son’s care for his family, it might be right to presume he goes along with the group because he knows what will happen if he doesn’t (see: Geelan’s fate).
However, his inaction causes only more suffering down the road for his family. The emphasis on Bayon in this flashback suggests that Geelan and he were friends. Considering Bayon I introduced his son to Geelan, I’d say it’s highly likely. Bayon II’s respect for Geelan was likely shared by Bayon I.
Even after his supposed betrayal, Bayon II continued to hold that admiration for Geelan’s virtues - something the rest of his peers despised. His father, too, likely held onto these feelings.
Tumblr media
They valued justice and compassion, yet when a just and compassionate man was threatened with destruction, what did they do? Bayon II never spoke for Geelan or his clan, never asked for mercy on his behalf, or seemingly did anything at all to avert the tragedy.
Instead, as before, he kept silent, and kept the status quo.
Geelan learned the hard way that even those you consider friends, even those who hold the same principles as you, will cave and fail to put those principles into practise when they are needed most.
Self-preservation, greed - in the end, whatever the reason, Geelan’s fate was sealed.
Bayon II, to his credit, differed from his father in one respect. In front of powerful colleagues holding deeply conflicting mindsets, he dared to speak his mind and share a view he was never supposed to even hold, let alone speak.
Tumblr media
As Lord Pupo says here - it is best to shut up and carry on. Keep whatever contrary opinions you have to yourself and do whatever is expected of you. That is what keeps the aristocrats in their positions of comfort and power, what keeps their families and clans safe.
Valuing what Geelan valued equals scorn at best and death and destruction at worst.
Bayon II was at least strong enough to admit his true feelings, but what did he do with those feelings? He, like his father before him, did what was expected of him and followed the queen with the same ‘stiff’ loyalty and devotion his father did.
To a betrayed Geelan, Bayon II was the same as his father. Whatever views he held, whatever he might say behind closed doors, none of it led to meaningful action. None of it helped Geelan when he desperately needed it.
It makes sense, then, that Geelan would place blame for Lady Noum and Lord Bayon II’s deaths on their forebears.
Tumblr media
By continuing their parents’ legacy of obedience and silence, both children merely continued the spread and influence of the corruption that plagued their lands, leaving a genuinely noble and just fellow to rot in the wilds. As far as Geelan is concerned, they are all the same.
By the time Bayon II finally found the courage to speak up, it was too late.

Top 10 Interesting Facts About Angkor Wat: Siem Reap, Cambodia
Tumblr media
Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings. Angkor, in Cambodia’s northern province of Siem Reap, is one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. It extends over approximately 400 square kilometres and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes.
Tumblr media
For several centuries Angkor, was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom. With impressive monuments, several different ancient urban plans and large water reservoirs, the site is a unique concentration of features testifying to an exceptional civilization. Temples such as Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, exemplars of Khmer architecture, are closely linked to their geographical context as well as being imbued with symbolic significance. The architecture and layout of the successive capitals bear witness to a high level of social order and ranking within the Khmer Empire. Angkor is therefore a major site exemplifying cultural, religious and symbolic values, as well as containing high architectural, archaeological and artistic significance. The park is inhabited, and many villages, some of whom the ancestors are dating back to the Angkor period are scattered throughout the park. The population practices agriculture and more specifically rice cultivation.
Tumblr media
The Angkor complex encompasses all major architectural buildings and hydrological engineering systems from the Khmer period and most of these “barays” and canals still exist today. All the individual aspects illustrate the intactness of the site very much reflecting the splendor of the cities that once were. The site integrity however, is put under dual pressures: Endogenous: exerted by more than 100,000 inhabitants distributed over 112 historic settlements scattered over the site, who constantly try to expand their dwelling areas; Exogenous: related to the proximity of the town of Siem Reap, the seat of the province and a tourism hub. Have you heard of religions sharing shrines? Never? Well, it happened once in Cambodia. Angkor Wat was first a Hindu religion temple and then later it was turned into a Buddhist temple. It is located in Cambodia and was first built by Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura, the capital of the Khmer Empire. It is the world's largest religious monument and one of the most visited religious sites in the world. Below are a few interesting facts that you need to know about Angkor Wat.   1. Angkor Wat was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The site suffered from decades of unregulated tourism and looting; many ancient statues have been decapitated and their heads sold to private collectors. An international collaborative effort has helped to slowly restore sites and prevent further collapse of unstable structures.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 🌴 Feed Cambodia 🌴 (@feedcambodia) on Mar 11, 2019 at 12:19pm PDT   2. Most of the money to restore Angkor Wat comes from foreign aid. Only an estimated 28% of ticket sales goes back into the temples.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Naum Perovic (@naumperovic11) on Mar 12, 2019 at 3:29am PDT   3. A three-day pass to explore the Angkor temples costs US $40. A single-day pass is available for US $20, or a week-long pass can be purchased for US $60.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by XinLin Khaw (@xinlinnn) on Mar 9, 2019 at 9:45pm PST   4. The Angkor temple Ta Prohm—famous for the large vines that strangle the ruins—was used as the set for the hit movie Tomb Raider. Paramount was charged US $10,000 per day for seven days to film there. Unfortunately, some of the iconic trees growing through the ruins at Ta Prohm have had to be removed to preserve the temple from further collapse.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Travel Addict ⚡️Rachel Hughes (@everthewanderer) on Mar 10, 2019 at 12:43am PST   5. Angkor Wat translates to "City of Temples" or simply "City Temple." New temples and ruins are being discovered nearly every year.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Mahmoud Saad (@sa3dovic) on Mar 12, 2019 at 10:28am PDT   6. Angkor Wat is the primary reason that more than 50% of international tourists visit Cambodia each year. Cambodians are proud of their ancient monument, so proud that they put it on the Cambodian flag in 1850. The only other country flag in the world that features a national monument is the current flag of Afghanistan. Images from Angkor Wat also appear on many denominations of the riel (Cambodia's currency).   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kenn Lonng (@kennlonng) on Mar 12, 2019 at 9:35am PDT   7. The decorations on the walls of the temple have a uniquely Hindu story telling characteristics. They have fables and myths pictures that tell of the temple's origin in Hindu religion.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by András Peres (@andrasperes) on Mar 12, 2019 at 9:29am PDT   8. Perhaps one of the most popular of Angkor's temples, Ta Prohm was built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Originally called Rajavihara, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. After the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century, and after centuries of neglect when the restoration the temples of Angkor began in the early 21st century, this temple was left mostly as is, because it had best merged with the jungle, but not yet to the point of becoming a part of it. This is why this temple has been capturing the imagination of tourists. It was also popularized by the Anjolina Jolie starer, Tomb raider. The movie uses this temple as a backdrop for some of it's key scenes. I was really interested to know that Archaeological survey of India has played a key role in restoring a lot of these Angkor temples and you can see lot of information on this available in these temple sites. So while ASI is the modern link of India to the Angkor Wat, which is also the world’s largest religious complex, there are some references to a historical connection too. According to some legends a Pallava king from South India, traveled to Cambodia and after marrying a Cambodian princess became king of Cambodia. Suryavarman II who was one of the great rulers of the Khmer Empire, started building this temple complex. The heavy Indian influence on the temple architecture is quite apparent. The Angkor Wat was one of the earlier temples made in this temple complex, was dedicated to lord Vishnu. As the subsequent generations of the Khmer ruler turned to Buddhism, the architecture and the portrayals turned more Buddhist, as it is evident in the temple of Bayon, which has different faces of Buddha. . . 📷@traveltapri . . #indianphotography #indianphoto #indianphotosociety #shutterhubindia #mypixeldiary #_coi #traveltapri #canonindia #yourshotindia #photographers_of_india #indiaclicks #indiaphotosociety #_hpics #photographersofindia #dslrofficial #click_india_click #photofie #indianshutterbugs #indiapictures #picturesofindia #oph #focusontheweelend #pixelpeeper #travelphotography #indiapictures (at Ta Prohm , Angkor Wat Cambodia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrQKdaBAxsY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bbq3tuk1crq0

Will I go to hell for this?
Geelan: I saw lots of starving people on my way here, Bayon. Why is that?
Bayon:
Geelan: I remember making quite a fuss about it centuries ago. Would've thought something would be done about it.
Bayon: Well -
Geelan: There weren't quite AS MANY starving people as before, though, I will admit. Maybe all the others just died?
Bayon, sweating profusely:
Bayon: I have always admired you, sir.
Geelan: Oh really? And what did you DO with that admiration?
Bayon: Um -
Geelan: NOTHING. FUCK ALL. JACK DIDDLY SQUAT.
Bayon: But my family -
Geelan: I ATE YOUR GODDAMN FAMILY!
