I’m rereading parts of KOA and I think we don’t talk enough about how after Elide told him that she didn’t care if he walked off the battlefield, Lorcan had absolutely zero self worth left. He let his shield drop during the battle to invite death to come to him. He was never planning on making it back to the keep and basically said no one would miss him. It hurts my heart and it’s absolutely an overlooked part of KOA.

People can hate Lorcan all they like, but at the end of the day he never punched Elide in the face or told her that she should be dead.

He never drugged Elide or forced her to give him lap dances or twisted a bone in her arm until she agreed to his bargain.

He never told Elide that everyone hated her or stood by while his family locked her in a house or let his family threaten to kill her or throw her in a dungeon or force her to hike.

Lorcan's not perfect, but he's definitely one of the best/unproblematic males SJM has ever written.

Elide limped her way to the front door of the Adarlandian farmhouse, her braid bouncing across her back. Her shoulders back. She told herself to remain confident but cheerful. Approachable.

For the tenth time now, she’d gone up a path and knocked on a stranger’s door, rehashing the same odd question. 

“Pardon me. I’m sorry to bother and intrude. But I was wondering if you could help me.”

Ship: Elorcan

Prompt: Family

Elide was clinging to Lorcan's arm to keep standing upright, exhausted from hours of labour. If Lorcan had anything to say about this, she would be in bed, resting. But Elide couldn't, no matter how badly she was exhausted, nothing would keep her from standing there. The sun had set long ago, the only source of light was candles, their flames flickering against the dark.

"Look at him," Elide whispered, gazing down at the baby crib they stood in front of, trying hard to keep her tears back, swallowing hard as her sight blurred. "Isn't he beautiful?"

"He is," Lorcan replied, so much affection coating his words for the bundle of joy sleeping before them. He moved his arm, sliding it around Elide's waist to keep her steady. "Of course he is, he looks just like you."

Elide leaned her head on his shoulder, sighing. Their son did inherit her nose and the form of his eyes and the chubby cheeks she knew she had as a baby too from stories her mother has told her long ago, when Elide was just a child, but he did also inherent Lorcan's lips and his ears and his hair. Lorcan had laughed when she told him, as they both had fairly similar hair but Elide knew their baby got it from her mate.

"Are you happy?" she asked, rubbing her thumb over the hand that rested at her waist.

"Very," he said, kissing the top of his head. "I couldn't be happier."

Elide smiled up at him and she knew he told the truth, because she felt the same. And as she looked at Lorcan, saw him gazing at their bundle of joy with love, she knew their son would always be loved and protected and her heart burst with joy for her family.
