someone needs to hold a live reading of tress since it's supposed to be a story told orally by hoid and that's clear throughout. and it should be interactive where the audience participates by for example actually asking the questions he says you might be asking and then tells you not to interrupt. it'd be so much fun.

Dragons
Cheyenne Sedai: What research about the aethers is Xisis hoarding?
Brandon Sanderson: His biggest interest is how aethers break down, and he's really researching the water cycle, and trying to figure out how the seethe happens, because he's very interested in the decomposition of aethers, which is what's causing the seethe. That's what he is hoarding there.
He's got quite the establishment in Silverlight as well. Silverlight was once upon a time a bunch of dragon palaces, they all still have their skyscrapers there, basically. He's taking a little detour for some decades on Lumar, but his home base would be in Silverlight.
Cheyenne Sedai: That kind of answers my follow up question, that was, is his scholarly seclusion typical of dragons, or just something unique to him?
Brandon Sanderson: He's taken a bit of seclusion, but I wouldn't say... There's a whole bunch of different things about dragons. If you've got a Tamu Kek, you can contact them, you can pray to them, and they can actually influence your emotions. They're all kind of like little mini gods. They're not immortal immortal, but they're pretty long lived and functionally immortal.
They've been around for a while doing all kinds of stuff, so there's all kinds of things going on with them. Some of them will be secluded. Some of them take their duties very seriously, like Frost takes his duties very very very seriously. Other ones just don't care.
You will get some themes with dragons, they do like bargains, they do tend to have their interests, they do tend to collect people and have either followers or corporations or things like that--I don't want to go too cyberpunk on us, but yeah. You'll notice some themes the more you get to know them.
I will warn you, in the cosmere, there are more Anne McCaffrey style dragons, lesser dragons if you want, that do not have a human form. The greater dragons, as well call them, they're basically like amphibians, they have to spend a part of their life cycle in a humanoid form. They give birth in humanoid form, then have a transformation in puberty to dragon form, and then can go back and forth after that. But we've got some Anne McCaffrey style dragons, we've even got some little drakelings on one planet that are not six limbed and stuff like that.
We'll eventually have some more dragons, but when I was writing the early books in the cosmere, we were a little dragon flooded with Eragon and How to Train Your Dragon, so I didn't write the dragon stories. But maybe some day.
Cheyenne Sedai: That's fascinating. And also, that means we got our Tamu Kek, which seems to be a theme with these because we always have a Tamu Kek somewhere.
Brandon Sanderson: One of the few ways to have an ansible in the cosmere in the early days, pre technology, if you wanted to communicate between planets, this is one of the only ways.
Really handy to get a hold of one of those, or to get some seons. Before we get technological solutions, those were your two main ways to communicate across planets.

New headcanon:
Goku's hair doesn't get all downward-soggy in the shower, it just gets kinda like...a slightly-more-floppy version of the nonsense he has goin' on.
Vegeta, on the other hand, comes outta there lookin' like a goddamn water nymph. I'm talkin' ✨TRESSES.✨ I'm talkin' "shampoo commercials wish they could capture this look."
The first time they're in a situation where Vegeta steps outta the shower like, "OK ur turn," and goes grumping away to grump somewhere else, Goku's brain does a record scratch, and then the gears lock up, and then it just explodes like somebody shot a rocket launcher at a fireworks factory.
The fireworks burst into the sky to spell out, in glimmering radiance, "I WANNA FUCK THAT DUDE."

Okay okay last one I promise
So not once but TWICE this season Santana’s privacy gets violated by someone she should be able to trust, someone that supposedly loves her and cares about her and just wants what’s best for her
In the first instance, F*nn forces Santana out of the closet by outing her in the middle of a crowded school hallway. His actions directly lead to her being outed to all of Ohio before she’s ready, before she’s even told her immediate family about it. He robs her of her chance to handle her sexuality and her coming out on her own timeline. Yet F*nn is immediately distanced from this (“You do realize you’re basically forcing me out of the flannel closet?” “Salazar's ad is ... what's forcing you to deal with this”) and the narrative quickly twists to portray him as innocent in all this
In the second instance, Br*ttany posts a sex tape of her and Santana without Santana’s permission (never mind the fact that Santana is 17 which makes this fully CP). Even ignoring that this is illegal and Br*ttany should straight up just go to jail, this is still a huge violation for Santana. Publicly broadcasting her in her most private moments for the whole world to see. This time, not only does the narrative twist to portray Br*ttany as completely innocent, but Santana also gets blamed fully for her own violation. She is then made to feel ashamed for being the victim of her partner’s sexual exploitation (“I’m embarrassed. I’ve been so shortsighted”)
The above scenes are shot in a near identical way, seemingly without a hint of irony or self awareness. In both scenes, Santana walks alone down the school hallway. Students all around her turn to stare, leering at her or sharing whispers amongst themselves as she grows more paranoid, realizing she’s the center of all the gossip and the lingering looks. Some creep comes up to her to offer unsolicited sexual comments meant to be viewed as “compliments”. Her discomfort is, or at least should be, obvious in both instances
One of these scenes is portrayed in the narrative of the show as serious. The other is played completely for laughs
Either way, in the end, she’s made to thank her violators. While they’re seen as completely in the right, even the hero in their respective situations. F*nn says he’s worried about Santana, doesn’t want her to hurt herself, even sings her a song! Br*ttany is just trying to help Santana become famous, she even helps Santana get into college! Absolutely no harm done, right?
Both F*nn and Br*ttany’s actions were premeditated. These weren’t heat of the moment impulse mistakes. F*nn even takes a couple of beats before turning to Santana and outing her as nonchalantly as possible. Speaking loudly enough for anyone to hear, talking slowly, seemingly enjoying twisting the knife in further with every word and actually leaving Santana speechless for once
Br*ttany clearly had lots of time to plan out her actions. We see her “thinking” about what she’ll do after Santana’s solo. Then she has enough time to edit the video, upload it, and see what kind of feedback it was getting before she saw Santana again to tell her what she did
Not even once did either character stop and take a step back to think that maybe what they were doing was wrong somehow. Neither of them ever seem to regret their actions. On the contrary, they manage to separate themselves from their actions so much that it may as well have been a faceless third party character that did these things in the first place
The narrative doesn’t punish them, the fandom doesn’t care to hold them accountable. In the end, their wrongdoings are swept under the rug and Santana is made to thank them for helping her along in her journey. She even ends up hugging them both. And that’s the end of it
Season 3 seems so carefully crafted to be as cruel as possible to almost every main character on the show. I’ve talked multiple times before about Kurt, Blaine, Quinn, Mercedes, and Tina especially, and the constant parade of pain, neglect, trauma, and loss that they have to endure this season. And of course everyone is made to come out the other end of it nothing but sunshine and smiles, saying what a great year they had and how all their dreams came true and of course thanking people that hurt them more than helped (mainly Schue)
But somehow it seems so much more vicious, what Santana went through. She’s always been a complicated character and always will be. But she did not deserve anything she got in s3. Her sexuality is such a vital part of her character, of her entire being
Santana struggled with her sexuality. She spent so much time lying to herself, to everyone around her. Trying to hide. She deserved more than anything to get the chance to come out on her own terms. Stand up in front of everyone because she wanted to, because she was ready, and proudly proclaim that this is what she is, this is who she is. But she doesn’t get that. F*nn takes it from her
She was used to hooking up with Br*ttany in front of guys, pretending it was for their pleasure instead of her own. Pretending that their private hookups didn’t mean anything, constantly distancing herself from the intimacy they shared. She deserved to be able to open up and be vulnerable with her supposed best friend and soulmate without fear of judgement, or prying eyes. But she doesn’t get that. Br*ttany takes it from her
These are two of the most crucial parts of Santana’s journey of sex, self expression, and identity. And in the end, they aren’t even hers. These precious, intimate, and sensitive parts of Santana are ripped away from her. She has no say, no control over them. And then these aspects of her being are forced under a microscope by people who supposedly love her, free to be picked apart by strangers all over the world until the end of time
It’s hard sometimes, but I do love Santana. And I honestly don’t see how a fan of Santana can support either of these relationships in canon. It feels like such a disservice to her. For her to be done wrong in such serious ways, practically back to back. Only for her to roll over and take it, for the sake of keeping F*nn the hero, or keeping Br*ttany the sweet girlfriend
Santana deserves better
Also for the sake of honesty and transparency or whatever. I wanted to get comments from the various videos mentioned in this post. And compare the reactions to the sex tape getting leaked vs Santana getting outed. Thinking that maybe people would at least get 50% and be smart enough to hate F*nn for what he did. But as usual, youtube comments are the absolute pits so you can probably guess what I found instead
So instead of comparing, have a selection of comments that make me want to start biting and clawing, just from the 3x16 Br*ttana videos

Finished Tress of the Emerald Sea. It was cute! Spoilers ahead.
The Princess Bride was an inspiration and it shows. It balances the right amount of seriousness with fairytale whimsy very nicely. I will admit, I'm not a huge fan of Hoid the character, but Hoid is very good as a narrator.
I remember thinking Huck forgor he was a rat a couple of times, and that it seemed like he was also cursed to avoid speaking about the sorceress, but it didn't click that he was Charlie until it was explicitly spelled out. I'm bad at picking up those details. Ah well.
The spores and the aethers really remind me of the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks, what with the specific substances tied to specific colors and what not. There's. Ugh. God there's a lot i could say about that series but it's a whole thing. Ugh.
Crow was cool. Being a spore eater sucks, but she still went about getting a cure in maybe the worst way possible. She feels like she could fit in Pale or Worm or something. Having an incredible supernatural power very viscerally erupting out of you, which is not so slowly killing you, that you're so desperate to find a cure for you'd cross lines you shouldn't, and manipulate others into crossing those lines.
Tress and Charlie were very cute together, in a way other Sanderson romances haven't really. It really feels like two kids realizing their feelings for each other. Towards the end, where Tress realizes what happened to Charlie and the epilogue, it reminds me of the end of Annihilation, where Lena and Kane realize they *aren't* Lena or Kane. They've both been irreversibly changed, but they've both been changed in similar ways. Now in the movie thats a metaphor for *trauma* instead of finding self worth and the whole 'come back home and find that it hasn't changed but you haven't' is a part of the hero's journey so ok listen whatever fuck you forget about it. Post canceled.
Actually that's a lie cause it's time to talk magic cosmere bullshit. It's weird after like 10 books of very setting specific vocabulary getting generic fantasy words tossed around. Oh he's a familiar, oh that's a dragon, oh she's a sorceress. You get what I mean.
Speaking of which. Xisis, Hoid, and Riina all appear to be of similar weight class. At least, indisposed, pre-Elantrian Hoid. I'm curious what exactly the dragon is capable of. It seemed like he had a whole palace made out of manipulated spores, but how was he able to do that? Is he the reason rain is unpredictable on the crimson sea? Some side effect of whatever hes doing to keep his palace held together? Riina seems a lot more powerful than the average Elantrian. Maybe she's just really skilled? Her tower being a spaceship is interesting, since the last time we saw her was with the Ire, who traveled off-world using the cognitive realm and a really really long pipe. Though seems like this story takes place around the same time as Sixth of Dusk, or at least the intended audience is from that world/time period, and is somewhat familiar with spaceships.
Oh wait shit was the tower sentient? It could talk and understand commands, and apparently the other spaceships the intended audience were familiar with could also talk. That's a big deal right? It's hard to create true sentience, at least with Awakening. Huh.
So. The spores and the aethers. It seems like they're kind of fundamental to magic, since midnight essences show up in the stormlight series, and there's parallels between the spores and soulcasting essences. It's like how multiple magic systems have Lightweaving and ways to enter the Cognitive realm, or like metals. Iron and steel push and pull in allomancy, spore manipulation, and fabrials.
Silver and aluminum are weird though. They both disrupt magic, but in different ways? Silver kills spores and hurts shades, and according to the Coppermind can bind cognitive anomalies?? Excuse the fuck out of me?? Anyway, silver is just. Normal. On Scadrial. The magic metal planet. Like it doesn't *do* anything. Meanwhile aluminum kills all metal reserves, steals powers, stores capital I Identity, and... Oh god. Can't be Awoken, can't be Pushed or Pulled, prevents emotional allomancy, can't be Forged, can be the *product* of Soulcasting but can't be Soulcasted into something else, isn't magically cut by Shardblades, and can scoop liquid out of a Perpendicularity.
Jesus.
Okay all of that is to say that aluminum is generally anti-magic. Except here. Where *silver* kills spores, and aluminum blocks the effect of silver.
That's weird, right? From a Doylist view it makes sense. On Scadrial, something that's immune/negates magic should be rare in the first era/when the magic system is first introduced to readers, but get more common as industry develops/the magic system is more understood by readers and you want to iterate on it. Meanwhile on Lumar, you want something that keeps the killer spores away from people to be relatively common, so you can have like. Civilization. But then you want a way you can play around and experiment with spores so you need something uncommon but not super rare to negate the effects of the first thing. But what's the Watsonian explanation?
Anyway back to the aethers. They roughly correspond with the Soulcasting essences. Verdant spores and emeralds both make plantlife, sapphires and zephyr spores both make air, etc. Midnight spores may be associated with smoke? Theres 10 essences and 12 (maybe 13?) spores so it's not a perfect fit. Crimson especially feels like the odd one out. Maybe Roshar just doesn't have the right color gemstone to make those missing 2-3 essences? Like if someone went back in time to era one Scadrial and gave Kelsier a lump of bendalloy, he'd be able to make a time bubble with it, it's just that era one was never able to make that metal previously.
Actually. Okay. I remember reading some word of Brandon about how Leras or Sazed purposefully changed allomancy? It was something to do with Leras' gigabrained plan to stop Ruin or Sazed setting the seeds for future space travel or something. And that always felt weird to me. I get that they're literally the gods of allomancy, but it still seems weird, you know? I should mention I haven't read The Lost Metal yet so idk if it's explained there.
Speaking of Shards. What is up with Lumar. Which godly corpse washed up here. Autonomy seems likely, since the spores seem like the sand from Taldain, and messing with other planets is on-brand. Again, havent read Lost Metal yet.
This could just be unrelated to any Shard whatsoever, but like. It's a planet with 12 stationary, equally distant moons. Itd be really weird if there wasnt some sentience behind it. Maybe Lumar *was* a normal planet at one point, the some Shard or piece-there-of showed up and made the moons and out of control aethers, and all the islands are just the tops of mountains? That's a real goddamn apocalypse though and I don't know how any human beings would actually survive that so. Theory canceled.
