By its very nature celebrity attention is ephemeral. [The celebrity obsession with the Kabballah Centre during the late 90's and early 2000's] was bound to pass. Perhaps for the rock stars and movie icons, Kabbalah was nothing more than a passing fad, a whimsy […] But there is nothing faddish about the philosophers, scientists, and intellectual giants who have been drawn to Kabbalah [over the centuries]. C. G. Jung […] Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz [… and] his great rival Isaac Newton […] John Locke […] the poet John Milton, and maybe even William Shakespeare were familiar with Kabbalah […]
Critics of Kabbalah […] will point to the so-called cranks and social misfits whose Kabbalistic dabblings have enabled them to impress, influence, and often manipulate their more gullible followers. Aleister Crowley invariable tops this list, followed by Éliphas Lévi, and a host of lesser-known occultists, of whom the most interesting is probably the obscure Dr. Falcon [or Ba'al Shem of London]. Centuries earlier, Kabbalah's weird and wonderful cast list had included Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, immortalized in literature as Dr. Faustus, the magician John Dee, [and] Emperor Rudolf II of Prague […]
History is full of the names of those drawn to the mysteries of Kabbalah […] Yet for the different ages in which they lived, and for the great variety of their lifestyles, they all had one thing in common: They all consumed Kabbalah as if they were plucking from a tree laden with fruit. They barely gave a thought to how its theories were devised, how its cosmology had developed, or how its mysteries had been revealed. That Kabbalah was a mysticism immersed in the Jewish tradition, with roots going back two thousand years, meant very little to them. They knew nothing of the years of study, the self-abnegation, and ascetic rigors which had enabled the classical Jewish Kabbalists in Provence, Spain, and finally Galilee to perfect their art.
And nor need they have known [either]. For the most part the philosophers, magicians, and scientists were drawing not on the Jewish tradition of Kabbalah [at all], but on its Christian reformulation, conceived during the Renaissance by men like Pico della Mirandola and Johannes Reuchlin- Christian scholars of the Hebrew mysteries.

The King and I 27/9/23
Woking New Victoria Theatre
Tumblr media
Kicking off the 10 cities and towns tour in Woking, we got to experience the theatre's brand new seats as the live band in the orchestra pit performed 'Overture' to some impressive scenery. Being out of London, it was nice to not feel the continues vibration of tube trains under those seats - which doesn't actually happen as often now, with the huge reduction in the service, continuing from the pandemic, + the introduction of full day strikes.
Continuing her role as teacher, Anna Leonowens, from the long running residency at the London Palladium, Annalene Beechey joined the King Of Siam from the US national leg, Brian Rivera, for this UK run. She was exquisite as Anna, and it was  demonstrative of witnessing a performer simply born to play a role; she was wonderfully endearing and strong in her portrayal of this iconic character.
The costumes were a visual feast, with a beautiful attention to detail; each scene was packed with vibrant colours and, of course, Anna’s huge, hooped skirts and dresses were so synonymous with this musical.
It was one of the longer and more expensive productions here, with Life of Pi (Mon 2nd - Sat 7th Oct), The Bodyguard (Mon 23rd - Sat 28th Oct) and Shrek The Musical (Mon 30th Oct - Sat 4th Nov) all coming up very soon at the New Victoria Theatre, with some additional one-off shows inbetwtween those dates.
The King and I ends in Woking on 30th Sep before continuing the tour:
3rd   Oct: OXFORD New Theatre - 7th Oct
17th Oct: NOTTINGHAM Theatre Royal - 21st Oct

Week 6: Formative Script and Presentation
The creative
Some key themes I want to portray or speak through my work are themes of feminism, environmental impact themes and themes of identity.
I definitely look at movies as research that’s why I picked one of my designer. She’s a prop maker. Rn I want to be an interaction designer so my design practice definitely relates to a moral logical way of thinking
The creation
Suzy chan
Suzy Chan is a designer born in Guangdong, China. She studied at UAL LCC in London and is currently living and working in Germany.
She specialises in poster making, moving images, and videos. She has previously worked on brand expressions.
Her work is very maximalist. It uses bright colours and patterns to convey a message. I want to take her use of bright colours and maximalism and use it in my work
She is originally from Macau a city in china that was once a Portuguese colony. Her design style is highly influenced by traditional Chinese culture her graduation project was on Macau. Her visual style derives from where she comes from.
Shannon Novak
What I love about Novak’s works is the use of colour along with the message behind his work. I also love how his work is consistent and has been in his whole career.
Olek
Their work is based on covering people and objects in crochet creating a plush cozy look. They have previously re-created popular artwork by Banksy and Annie Leibovitz’s 1996 portrait of Keith Haring. Olek’s work is found in New York.
Milton Glaser
Created in 1977 as part of an advertising campaign commissioned by New York State, the iconic I ♥ NY logo was designed to increase tourism and raise the spirits of New Yorkers after the city's fiscal crisis.

R.I.P., R.P.
In the late '70s, when I was in high school, I saw a production of Kennedy's Children at the Penn State/Behrend theatre. After the show the playwright, a hippie longhair type in bib overalls named Robert Patrick...
Tumblr media
...gave a Q&A about life in New York's Off-Off-Broadway Theatre scene, of which he was a co-founder; he wrote prolifically for Caffe Cino and LaMama and other celebrated venues of the period. Kennedy's Children was his most famous play, premiering in London before opening on Broadway in 1975, where it won a Tony for star Shirley Knight.
I was already something of a theatre geek, but Patrick's talk made a big impression on me about the possibilities for doing theatre outside the mainstream, even though I didn't have the nerve to ask him a single question. A few years later, in the '80s, I was assistant director of another production of Kennedy's Children, and also appeared in it.
Decades after that, in mid-2021, I connected with Robert over Facebook. He was in his '80s and lived in L.A., in poverty, I think, but also in seemingly immense good cheer, still socializing, still walking and photographing his neighborhood, still performing with underground groups...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and most certainly still writing. He seemed to devote himself mostly to pouring out poetry--witty, urbane, sophisticated, classically learned, allusive, ruefully romantic, gloriously rhymed poetry, posting large amounts of it almost every day. Sometimes he would post five or six poems at once, under the heading "Who Left the Poet On?"
The best of this stuff was, to me, stirringly beautiful, but as far as I know he never submitted it for publication, though I doubt I was the only person who urged him to. He was probably right that his style was too out of fashion for most bigtime rags these days, but I hoped that maybe his illustrious status as both a New York icon and a gay icon might persuade some of the big mags to make an exception and publish some poetry that was actually, you know, good.
In any case, I regularly commented and messaged Robert in the most effusive manner--quite sincerely, mind you; he may have been my favorite living American poet. And then, alas, Sunday I was jolted to learn that he was no longer a living American poet. He had a date for coffee with a friend, and when he didn't show the friend had the police do a welfare check on his apartment. They found that he had died in his sleep, at 85.
I'm more rattled by this passing than I would have expected. I realized that I had, for the last couple of years, nursed the daydream that I would stage Kennedy's Children or one of his other plays here in the Valley somewhere, and bring him out here to soak up some well-earned adulation. Like so many projects I think of, I wish I'd jumped on it a little sooner.
I can't claim that I really knew him, of course, but I spent a long time last night going through the many lengthy online chats I was lucky enough to have with him, discussing everything from the poetry of Catullus to the Oscars. I sent him a few of my own poems, about which he invariably gushed and even kindly posted a couple of them on his own page.
The Thursday before Easter I sent him a poem of mine called "A Prayer for Maundy Thursday," and on April 12 he wrote back to say that he read it ten times and found it "...more frightening with each reading. What a brave poem." I'm choosing to take that as praise; in any case the idea that Robert Patrick saw fit to read anything by me once, let alone ten times, is quite an If My 18 Year Old Self Could See Me Now sort of moment.
He then asked me if I had ever heard the story that Dante's neighbors called him "the man who's been to Hell." I replied that I hadn't heard that, and he asked "Do you think Milton's neighbors whispered about his trip to Eden?" This was his last message to me; I messaged that maybe Milton's neighbors thought that's why he was blind, but he never replied.
R.I.P., and peace and joy eternal on your own travels sir. Thank you for the encouragement, the example and all that abundant, exquisite verse.

KATIE TAYLOR BIDS TO BECOME TWO-WEIGHT UNDISPUTED WORLD CHAMPION AGAINST CHANTELLE CAMERON ON MAY 20 IN DUBLIN

Irish legend meets undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion at the 3Arena Historic event to be shown live and exclusively on DAZN
Katie Taylor has the chance to become a two-weight undisputed World Champion when she takes on undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion Chantelle Cameron in a historic homecoming fight at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday May 20, shown live worldwide on DAZN.   Irish legend Taylor (22-0, 6 KOs) fights in Ireland for the first time in her professional career as she bids to create even more history and further cement herself as the greatest female fighter on the planet when she meets England’s Cameron.   Taylor edged out Amanda Serrano in an epic fight for the ages on an iconic night at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York last April. The global superstar retained her Undisputed Lightweight World Title belts after a Fight of the Year contender with multi-division World Champion Serrano.   It was the first women’s boxing bout to headline the famous MSG in its 140-year history, attracting an unprecedented audience of 1.5 million tuning in globally on DAZN. The rivals were set to rematch in Dublin on May 20 until Serrano withdrew due to injury last month.    Northampton’s Cameron (17-0, 8 KOs) achieved a lifetime dream by outpointing the USA’s Jessica McCaskill to be crowned undisputed at 140lbs at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates last November.   Cameron captured the famous green and gold WBC 140lbs World Title by widely outpointing Brazil’s Adriana dos Santos Arauja behind closed doors at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes back in October 2020.   ‘Il Capo’ looked sensational as she stopped Puerto Rico’s Melissa Hernandez in five rounds during the first defence of her crown the following year in her US debut at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.   The 31-year-old added the IBF and inaugural Ring Magazine World Titles to her collection by decisioning Indiana’s Mary McGee in an all-action main event at The O2 in London in October 2021 before defending her titles with another unanimous decision points win over Victoria Noelia Bustos in May last year.    "Once Serrano pulled out this was the natural fight to make,” said Taylor. “It's two undefeated, reigning Undisputed World Champions going up against each other and I believe that's the first time that's ever happened in the modern era of the sport.   “People have been talking about this fight for a long time now so I'm delighted it's happening and I'm looking forward to becoming a two-weight Undisputed Champion in Dublin on May 20."   “It feels surreal that the fight is actually happening,” said Cameron. “It feels like my whole professional career has been based around this fight and I never imagined it would actually happen for one reason or another.   “I’m no stranger to boxing away from home now and to be going into Katie’s backyard for her homecoming is massive. I’m glad to be a part of history again like I was in Abu Dhabi. I know what I will be up against and that I am the underdog but I relish that. The fight will be electric. We both are experienced, we are both game and we are both are coming to win   “To successfully defend my belts against Taylor will be the icing on the cake for me. To become undisputed and then defend them against the pound-for-pound best in women’s boxing will really mark my place in women’s boxing and create my own legacy.”   “I can’t wait to be a part of the historic moment when Katie Taylor makes her homecoming in Ireland to attempt to make history and become a two-weight undisputed Champion,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “For the first time in her career Katie Taylor called an opponent out because that’s how important this moment is for her. She called out in my opinion the most dangerous test in boxing for her at this time – the undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion Chantelle Cameron. This fight has been talked about for many years and we always said that when the timing was right Katie would have no problem accepting the challenge.    “For Chantelle, she has done everything that has been asked of her – became World Champion, unified the division and became undisputed at the end of last year. She is a formidable fighter who has always believed she can beat Katie Taylor. On May 20 you will see one of the greatest nights in Irish sporting history as the icon of Irish boxing will be part of an event that will have the eyes of the world watching. We’re building an incredible undercard to accompany a wonderful main event which I think will surpass even the heights of Taylor vs. Serrano. Get ready Ireland, we’re coming! We look forward to an incredible night. Watch it live around the world on DAZN.” “First of all we wish Amanda all the best in her recovery from injury,” said Joe Markowski, CEO DAZN North America. “Secondly, our thanks to Eddie and the team for pulling this thrilling matchup out the bag to mark Katie’ historic return to Ireland. Chantelle Cameron is a fantastic fighter and will be a tough test for Katie. I for one, cant wait! Watch this brilliant fight live and exclusive on DAZN”   An announcement on tickets will be made soon.

Come fly with Shaggy and listen to his fabulous selection of reggae and dancehall music
FRESH from re-working his iconic tune It Wasn’t Me alongside electronic music producers Tenchi and Embody, Shaggy returns with a brand new album Com Fly Wid Me. The new long player is a collaborative effort with rock icon Sting who produced the album and was born from a crazy idea Sting had while on tour with Shaggy a few years ago. The album features reggae interpretations of some of Frank Sinatra’s classics including of That’s Life and of course Come Fly With Me.   Sting explains, “This idea of getting my friend to sing ten iconic songs from the Frank Sinatra songbook in a reggae style had been brewing for a while…I know, it sounds crazy! But every time the idea crossed my mind, it made me smile. And what does the world need now, more than anything else…something to smile about!” “I’ve always been a Sinatra fan,” says Shaggy. “As a child, Frank’s music was often playing in our house and on Sundays, all of the Jamaican radio stations would play the greats – Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, et cetera.” He continues, “It’s great to be working with Sting again. He’s the brother I never knew I needed!” CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO STREAM THE ALBUM ON SPOTIFY Sting adds, “The reason reggae may work here is because there’s a joy and energy about it which is similar to the energy that Frank’s music had at its summit. You know the songs, you know the voice, you just never expected this. He’s not trying to be Frank, he’s Shaggy. So, relax and let that smile soothe the cares of the world away.” Currently on tour in the UK, we caught up with Shaggy and he’s put together a playlist of reggae and dancehall favourites for us which follows. The style council paul weller

#The style council paul weller update#
Musically, “My Ever Changing Moods” borrows the lush ii 7-I M7 opening chords from the Classics IV hit of 1968, “Stormy.” But it adds some Latin percussion and a bright horn section - all of which would then be borrowed for Santana’s “Game of Love” (2002), a catchy pop song with a similar tempo and arrangement, but none of Weller’s risky wordplay. The band’s only US hit, “ My Ever Changing Moods,” is also one of Weller’s best compositions. I think of the words of another melancholy twenty-something artist, William Wordsworth, who described “that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts / Bring sad thoughts to the mind.” But at age 19, I thought Weller had read my mind.
#The style council paul weller update#
On the single’s flip side, “ The Paris Match,” Weller (or Tracey Thorn, in a later version) sings, “I’m only sad in a natural way / And I enjoy sometimes feeling this way.” The literary scholar in me hears in those lines an 80s update of the eighteenth-century fad of sensibility. Its chorus, with a frustrated repetition of “no matter what I do” finally resolves with the inevitable confession, “I end up hurting you.” A spare drum machine and shimmer of 80s synthesizers provide the aural update to its American soul inspirations (the Dramatics’ 1972 “In the Rain” comes to mind). The atmospheric “Long Hot Summer” (1983), with a title that hints at both romance and politics but a lyric of personal anguish, is probably the band’s most successful foray into this field. Along the way, Weller employs some zeugma-esque lyrics worthy of Dickens: “We used to chase dreams now we chase the dragon.”īut there was also melancholy. “ Walls Come Tumbling Down!” (1985), a top ten attack on Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, opens with the memorable line, “You don’t have to take this crap.” “ Come to Milton Keynes” (1985), a missing link between the Kinks’ “Village Green Preservation Society” and Blur’s “Country House,” is a dark commentary on one of the last of the new towns, where the opening stanza’s “May I walk you home tonight?” mutates into “May I slash my wrists tonight?” in the last. If the image and sound were cool and sophisticated, the lyrics were more often angry and urgent. If the Who, the Kinks, and early rock and roll informed the musical character of the Jam, it was this other ’60s - along with a dollop of Philly and Motown soul - that shaped the Style Council. I discovered the Style Council at the same time I discovered cool jazz, bossa nova, and the soundtracks (and fashions) of French nouvelle vague and Italian Neorealismo cinema. What was it about the Style Council that spoke to a bookish teenager in middle America? Weller and Talbot embodied a cosmopolitan European outlook that seemed to include everything I thought was missing from my own life. I well remember waking up at sunrise on July 13, 1985, at my parents’ home in Omaha, Nebraska, just to watch the Council perform at Live Aid - they were second on the London bill, after Status Quo - only to have MTV cut away after one song for an interview. His first band, the Jam, produced a string of UK hits between 19, and there was widespread consternation in the British press when Weller left to form the Style Council with keyboardist Mick Talbot.Īcross the Atlantic, neither the Jam nor the Style Council received much notice from that then-new source of everything musical, MTV. And as the Long Hot Summers anthology makes clear, the best of those songs stand up to any British or American pop music of the 1980s.Ī musical icon in Britain, Weller has never had a broad following overseas in fact, The Style Council’s “My Ever Changing Moods” (1984) remains his only composition to reach the US Top 40. More than any other music of the era, they shaped my social and political as well as my sonic outlook. While I’ll happily listen to anything Weller produces, I will always have a soft spot for those Style Council records. It seems the perfect time to raise a cappuccino to Weller’s other great band. Fittingly, a new anthology of Style Council recordings, Long Hot Summers, recently reached the UK top ten, and a documentary of the same name will appear on Showtime this month. While this encouraged some listeners to wax nostalgic for Weller’s earliest success with his mod-revival band the Jam, On Sunset has far more in common with the eclectic, soul-inspired records of his Style Council years. In July, when On Sunset debuted at the top of the UK charts, Paul Weller achieved the remarkable feat of having a number one album in five consecutive decades.

Mesmerising, mystical, soul-stirring artworks from the allegorical universe of William Blake, whose oeuvre is now on exhibition at Tate Museum (11 September 2019 – 2 February 2020). Born in Soho, London, Blake was a fascinating artist whose work was misunderstood and deemed to be a sign of madness by his contemporaries, being far ahead of its time due to its expressively dark, sacrilegious nature and the sometimes grotesque, allegorical mythical creatures depicted. The artist's work was fuelled by the otherworldly visions he started experiencing from a young age. His iconic, symbolic imagery features faeries, devils and angels, fictional deities invented by him- embodiments of philosophical concepts governing his universe, other religious and celestial themes, suffering, sexual violence, scenes from Dante's Divine Comedy, as well as Miltonic and Shakespearean characters.
The Times exhibition review: "Find yourself transported into strange, enraptured realms."
"To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour."- William Blake

Project 3 Research
Starting of this project, we were told to find 5 different historically significant artist, designer, architect, art movement, design object or typeface to interview. My 5 things I had in mind was: William Morris, Le Corbusier, Milton Glaser, Frank Gehry and Giles Gilbert Scott.
Tumblr media
Giles Gilbert Scott. An English architect that is famous for designing the red telephone box.
Tumblr media
This is the latest version of the telephone booth. The K6, sixth generation of the telephone booth.
Yes, I changed my topic on William Morris to this because i felt like this one can be talked about more.
Tumblr media
This is a picture of the very first kiosk that was designed by the UK Post Office that is made out of concrete. This first generation of telephone booth does not catch the people attention because they think it is too old fashioned, ordinary and unattractive.
Tumblr media
This is the second generation of the telephone booth pictured in London. This version was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott himself. Brief history about the booth: Gilbert Scott was not told to design this booth. However, in that time, UK had a competition to make the telephone booth and he actually won. Since then, all of UK’s telephone booth is now very iconic, thanks to Sir Scott.
I was going to make a zine for this project but then I realised that I like making videos more. It allows me to enjoy the process, and thats what is most important for me. Enjoying the process leads to a better outcome. The video concept was like a documentary and some opinion from myself, art & design techniques, also some jokes :D.
