The parallel between Sokka and Tenzin as their fathers' sons.
Sokka, left at 13 as his father and all the other men head off to war. Hakoda tells him "being a man is knowing where he's needed the most" and he needs to protect his sister, his home.
Tenzin is the second airbender. He is also half water tribe, he's a man. When Aang dies, he will be the last airbender. He understands what he needs to do.
Untold amount of pressure and responsibility have been thrust upon them by their fathers. Though, I believe it is not all intentional, but the unfortunate circumstance of being the fathers of sons who take responsibility incredibly seriously.
In Sokka's case, "protect your sister" is a vague instruction. It was meant to give him purpose, to help him feel okay about being left behind, He is too young for war, his father does not want to bring his child to slaughter. But Sokka will die with purpose. He will train the children of his tribe so they will be protected, he will face a fire nation ship until his last breath. He cannot go to war, but Hakoda did not see that war was all around them. In trying to give Sokka purpose, Hakoda put their world on his shoulders.
We do not get to see Aang be a father (in the TV shows), but we know he had hopes for the future. All his children were air nomads, and the air acolytes brought his culture back, but Tenzin could bend. This part of their culture is one ONLY they share. I do not think Aang would hide this, he is joyous that he gets to share his culture. When he feels respected, he always is, he taught the air acolytes after all. Off handedly, he could say, "I'm hopeful for a future where there are lots more air benders," and that, which feels mostly innocuous to him, is the nail in the coffin of Tenzin's fate. He is Avatar Aang's son, and the future of the air benders. It would not matter that Aang meant a future in generations. Tenzin sees the responsibility and it's his. He is his father's only air bending child, he knows what he needs to do.
Being a parent is not understanding the way the things you say harm your children. Even those things that feel innocuous in the moment can be life altering. Especially the more the child respects the parent. Purpose and Hope for those with a broader perspective, can be death sentences to a life that could have been when expressed to those who idolize the former.

bad faith interpretation of a character is "aang didn't take bumi and kya on the same vacations as he did tenzin because he didn't love them as much and was a bad dad" instead of "aang had a responsibility to the world and part of that responsibility was teaching tenzin everything about air nomad culture so he could continue their traditions because tenzin would be (and was for a few years) the last airbender after aang passed away. he also had to make sure that tenzin was an airbending master because tenzin would be the ONLY one who could teach the next avatar how to airbend. due to the crushing weight of responsibility he knew tenzin would have to shoulder, he probably sprinkled in "fun vacations" during his trips with tenzin so he'd have positive memories."
bumi and kya are allowed to feel some type of way because their dad favored their airbending sibling over them, but let's not pretend that favoring doesn't make narrative and character sense when the future of airbending rests on the shoulder of two characters in the entire universe.

I just think everyone in the palace should call Izumi “their little superstar” while she’s growing up, that’s all

i think we can all agree that mako was an absolute shit boyfriend to asami (he has definitely grown since then i am not a mako hater, he got so much better after season 2)
bro literally constantly casted her feelings aside and did not care if the way he was treating korra was hurting asami or not. i understand completely that he had feelings for both of them, and i wouldn’t be so pissed at him for how he treated asami if not for the fact that she was literally his girlfriend the whole time he was treating her this way

[ooc] I love fledgling Kain. He has no idea what's going on. And everyone around him just agreed: "Yeah, put that guy in situations."

I think a part of why Engineer is so wholesome to me is also that feel like he'd treat his machines as his babies you know. He's sort of like the parental one out of the four of them!

what’s ur opinion on suyin being sokka’s daughter?? (🤮🤮🤮)
oh my god i love this questionnnnnnnn😁😁😁😁😁😁 bc i get to argue against everyone’s silly little theory🤭🤭
my opinion is that that statement is WRONG! and that every reason people use to justify said theory that suyin is sokka’s kid is weak bc it can ALSO be used to justify the theory that BAATAR is sokka’s kid. (or varrick but i don’t like that one so i’m gonna #ignore it 😌)
“her kids look like sokka!” no. they look like their father. and HE looks like sokka.
“when we first meet suyin, she’s wearing armwraps like they do in the water tribe” literally what ru even talking about 💀her entire dance team wears them too - does that mean they’re all sokka’s kids???
also like in what world would SOKKA of all people be an absent father?? even if it was a fling or whatever idgaf he wouldn’t be completely absent from his child(ren)’s lives. not only because he’s loyal and caring and a beautiful man and i love him so so much, but also because he comes from the SWT and family and community are so so so important to them. ESPECIALLY to sokka, as someone who was entrusted with such care of his people and of his sister and so on. we see TIME AND TIME AGAIN how protective he is and how much he cares for those he loves. these are not traits of an absent father.
back on that baatar thing, it makes like 90x more sense for HIM to be sokka’s kid (and suki’s bc i love sukka and i am deciding that they stayed together forever bc it’s my blog and i make the rules).
an architect non-bender with darker skin who literally LOOKS like he’s related to sokka?
an architect. non-bender. who literally. looks. like. sokka.
based on pretty much no info of either suyin’s or baatar’s parentage (except toph), isn’t it more tangible that the metal clan get their supposed water tribe heritage from their father’s side?
anyway slay the boots house down baatar is a sokka kid #not suyin😌

oh my god dude I was looking through crusty ass 2012 fics/sarc they’re really good fics no matter when they were made or how they contradict later eps (when tlok first aired) and I found this one linking to a livejournal prompt about amon being mako&bolin’s dad and. oh my god dude.
I was three years old in 2012, so obviously I’m unsure of the timeline of airing/these posts, but based on context clues it’s about midway(?) through the originally intended miniseries, when the viewer didn’t know much about amon, or the bending brothers’ backstory.
so I read this, knowing all the information was incorrect and not plausible for canon and it has thus been rotting my brain. because honestly, what the fuck guys?? these mf fic authors are on an entirely different level than the fucking PROFESSIONAL SCREENWRITERS of this show. I would have literally gone insane if that was canon. because it adds a whole nother layer of angst to empathize with to mako+bo as well as potentially reducing hate on mako because he could ACTUALLY BE FLESHED OUT AS A CHARACTER ONSCREEN. GUYS.
so yeah. please please please please please please please go read the fic it’s so good even if it’s madly inaccurate just adopt it as a little pet au in your head like I did because I will be going insane about this for at least the next week. if I can get my thoughts coherent enough to right down, potentially expect more on this soon,,,

Queer rep is not a vacuum
There is so much debate over what is and is not queer rep and it seems to change with each new show. For this I’m going to explore four series that I’m personally a fan of and break down their rep individually ;LOK, SPOP, TOH and Arcane. I will do it this way because Queer rep is not a vacuum.
It is first important to understand the perspective I’m coming at from this: so Yaama, if you don’t know me I’m a queer [Enby and Demi sexual lesbian]and indigenous [Australian] writer; I mainly write about queer people for queer people. I also want to say that I am not bashing any of these series, I love them all.
1. Korrasami
Korra and Asami have a slightly rocky relationship when they first meet but they become fast friends. Both characters are confirmed Bisexual and their relationship is far more obvious from a  queer perspective. They are far less explicit than other shows on this list but that is due to studio censorship.
The ship itself is really sweet. Both women are close and support each other with Korra writing to only Asami at one of the roughest times of her life.
This ship, being the first queer rep in Avatar, followed by Kya being confirmed as a lesbian, gets a lot of flack for being too subtle and not built up enough. As much as I do not like Some writers on the Avatar team, I do genuinely believe they were trying their best here.
The ship itself isn’t problematic and came at a time when there was little rep in mainstream media, let alone kids media. While it has it’s issues, it is some of the first rep kids in my generation saw. Sue me, I’ve got nostalgia.
2.SPOP
This is a contentious one but it cannot be denied that SPOP was full of Queer rep. Spinetossa, catradora, None of the princesses were straight and Double Trouble.
SPOP is unashamed of it’s queer rep and as world where no one is straight, no one is homophobic. This provides escapism that we as queer people sometimes need.
While Catradora has it’s criticisms, it’s a beautiful ship that underpins the narrative  and drives the plot. to call it “toxic” or “abusive” ignores the nuance of the story.
Spinetossa is a solid relationship that provides fluff and comedic relief in the darker episodes. they’re background characters but the nature of their relationship is clear from the start. they’re always together, they wear chokers with each other's colours . From the get go, before we even hear the cute nicknames we know they are a unit.
Double Trouble , while  stemming from a problematic trope, is a solid character with complexities and comedy gold to spare. While the trope of making nonbinary characters non human is dodgy at best in a show where cis characters are also not human they don’t stand out too much so they can have a pass.
3. TOH
TOH is also unashamedly queer, Eda, Raine, Willow’s dads, Lumity, Edric.I’ve also seen commendations on the Neurodivergent rep  but that’s not my place.
Disney was obviously trying to censor things earlier on but around late season two A Dana stopped giving a shit and good for her. We got Edric having a partner, to quote his sister Emira “ After he accidentally sent  a love poem to THEIR mum”. Love that for him. The first Lumity kiss and them getting together and everything after it.
Willows dads’, minor and cliched as they may be do not come of a tokenistic, a nice change from other shows there the Mc’s best friend’s queer parents is often some of the only rep.
And Raine, a nonbinary person, who while not quite human isn’t an alien/robot/demon/spirit. They’re also a prominent character and their relationship with Eda is just a delight.
Cool Aunt Lilith, AroAce queen and all the flags in season three and it’s only the first episode.
there are some issues with Luz dating her friends ex bully but they address it and smooth it over.
4.Arcane
The biggest thing to come out of Arcane was CatVi/Violyn. I’ve seen some people ship Caitlyn and Jayce but that’s a small group.
Both character’s are confirmed as lesbians. While I love Luz I do find that lesbians do often get left behind in representation or claimed as Bi when they aren’t.
there’s not much else in terms of queer rep for Arcane but it’s very clearly a world where homophobia isn’t an issue.
The CatVi relationship is also important to the story and builds up over the first season. the show isn’t concerned with it but it’s nice to see.
All this to say, Queer rep isn’t a vacum, just because one series shows wholesome queer people and another shows messy, complicated queer love does not make either superior to the other. To put wholesome queer relationships over messy ones perpetuates respectability politics. Both can be good queer rep, both can be bad queer rep.

Just thinking about single dad Zuko getting together with sokka when Izumi is little, and them both being worried about how she’d react to it since Zuko was all she’d had up until this point (+ a handful of amazing lesbian aunties), then Izumi running to Sokka and throwing her arms around him after a nightmare for the first time, and him just being kind frozen in shock for a minute but then wrapping his arms around her too, and vowing to himself that from that moment on he would always do everything in his power to protect her and *uncontrollable sobbing*
