Maple Rambles - Lego Monkie Kid is not for children
Lego Monkie Kid, despite its cheesiness and playful characteristics- especially in the first season- is not a kid's show. I'd love to go into detail about each traumatizing thing that happens, but I'll keep this brief and simply recap to avoid spoilers.
Lego Monkie Kid gets more terrifying and serious every season, and I can fully understand why a parent would underestimate how serious this show is first glance, and how many people who I've tried to convince to join that fandom also think this show is for kids.
The first movie and season are full of fun little moments with an adventure of the week feel each episode. In the first movie, there's even little foreshadowing where MK checks the age limit for the vehicle he's driving and says "Ages 8 and up? Shouldn't be too hard to drive.". Pretty much, in each episode, MK gets advice from someone he trusts, learns what he has to do to fix whatever issue he's having, and then completes his task and ends the episode learning a new lesson like taking others into consideration. However, towards the end of the season and the second movie "Revenge of the Spider Queen", it begins to set the mood going into darker territory. The next view seasons begin to lean more and more into this, including intense PTSD flashbacks, actual murder, trust issues, and some of the characters are literally nightmare fuel for a child under the age of 10, possibly even 11. We learn more about the Monkey King's dark past and Season Three and Four exhibits breakdowns for some of our favorite characters
While this show can be nice to watch for someone older who just enjoys the childish aspects, this show is absolutely not for children.
Nah but can we appreciate Revenge of the Spider Queen more? That special is AMAZING, I completely forgot how good it was until I rewatched it. The training scene? MK and Wukong watching the fireworks? LBD’s debut? Spider Queen’s takeover? The introduction of the spider crew? Wukong and DBK getting captured? Red Son joining the team? The hilarious jokes throughout the special? All of them going to the Celestial Realm? The kickass final battle with MK, Wukong, and DBK working together? IT’S JUST SO DAMN GOOD!! Perfect introduction to season 2 and a FRICKIN AWESOME SPECIAL!
That fun little moment where I’m bored and make scenarios in my head. Pretty much how a human became a platonic friend to the edgy monkey man. Might do it with other characters too. :)
So pretty much the whole thing started by accident, you caught Macaque without his human disguise on at the shadow theater and things just escalated from there…
Mainly Macaque was following you around at first to make sure you didn’t tell anyone about his current gig as a shadow play puppeteer.
Well, surprise, you didn’t actually care. You just wanted the guy to stop randomly busting out of the shadows and scaring the absolute shit out of you.
Didn’t stop though, now Macaque just pops in whenever he’s bored.
You guys probably met during Season 1 or 2, so he was still kinda an asshole just for shits and giggles.
One day Macaque decided to see what you actually did during the day and watched you from the shadows. It’s how he finds out you didn’t have a lot of friends in the city, pretty much none.
This is also around the time he starts to show his “friendly” side. As in while he was watching you walk home, Macaque witnesses someone trying to mug you. He saves you and escorts you the rest of the way home, lacking to mention how exactly he was in that location to begin with.
I’m not sure exactly yet why Macaque would stick around, but I view it as he sees his younger self in you. The one that hadn’t gotten hurt by Wukong yet… he probably doesn’t want to see you end up like him.
He doesn’t open up to you at first, it’s mainly you talking whenever he decided to pop around. Macaque was never empty-handed either, always bringing you your favorite fruit or sweet when he came to visit.
I don’t think Macaque gets too close at first, mainly because deep down he’s afraid you’ll just end up hurting him too.
He’s pleasantly surprised when he finds that you expect him to appear at your place now. You keep his favorite foods stocked up in your apartment/house and make sure to make Macaque feel comfortable and welcomed.
You guys probably swap stories about the past or something funny one of you experienced during the day. The conversations would end up going into the late hours of the night.
When Macaque does finally reveal little bits of his past you sit beside him with open ears. You don’t speak because you can see the pain in Macaque’s eyes when he talks about his former friends (he doesn’t tell you who they are yet though, so you have no idea who exactly had hurt him).
Sometimes you guys hang out in public. Macaque in disguise, though, of course.
The way I view Macaque and Wukong’s relationship personally is that they used to be a romantic thing and Macaque is still hurt from how it all ended. I don’t see him trying to find a relationship like that with you since he’s still trying to open up in a platonic way again.
That’s all I got for now. Let me know what you guys think, I’m curious to see what everyone else’s opinion is! Sorry if you wanted it to be romantic in the end. Whenever I think of self-insert relationships they just end up being platonic. It’s more of a way to heal my inner child, if that makes sense? But, again, this is just a headcanon, so if you disagree with my opinion on Macaque then that’s fine! I do these things more to entertain myself and help heal some certain things I have going on.
MACAQUE IS BACKKKKK?~???!!!!! AND HES JUST AS EPIC--- IF NOT EVEN MORE EPIC-- THAN BEFORE??!?!?!?
