Spent 9 months living abroad and felt so comfortable in my body; 3 weeks at home and I’ve relapsed back into my éd.
- i think we all know what’s happened

Things living in Europe for a semester of university taught me
I am worthy of being someone’s friend. I am a good friend, even though I don’t think so sometimes. I am worthy of unconditional, soft and gentle love. Quiet loving your friends is more satisfying than shouting it to the world. How to be alone. That being alone isn’t synonymous with being lonely. That having lunch on my own is actually a very nice experience. Nobody else cares as much about what you do as you do. You should laugh hard at least 2 times a week. It’s good for your soul. That a sunny day and some ice cream can solve nearly all of your problems, at least for 30 minutes. Defending your friends and your beliefs is always worth the uncomfortable moments. Buy comfortable shoes. Buy shoes that you like, in colours you love. Be yourself, it’s is the best version of you. Leaving it too long without swimming in the sea or a lake can become suffocating if you’ve lived near the water for so long. Nobody is worth sacrificing your peace. Not ever. Don’t condemn yourself for living. Eat cake for breakfast. Eat broccoli for dessert. Fuck it. Travel if you can. Even if it means taking a train 2 hours away and finding a field to have a picnic in. When you find people who love you and who you love, love them confidently and wholeheartedly. The world will reward you for it.

hello *potential* future audience
Earlier today I was in the car with my mother and thinking, wow, I wish I journaled more or something so I have a place to deposit what I find notable during my day-to-day endeavours. I have a horrendous track record when it comes to keeping a written diary of these things, because when I write my hand can't keep up with my brain and my flow of thoughts is choppy and uncomfortable. I considered keeping a diary in google docs but that feels strange and probably not an ideal medium for keeping a journal of sorts. There was also the option creating a video diary and removing the writing element all together but the concept filming myself just sitting, talking was rather disagreeable. By this point we had arrived home and I reached the conclusion that a blog page where I can rest recent experiences, thoughts and whatever else I find interesting enough to share.
So what now? Book reviews, ideas, opinions, anecdotes, recipes, photos, songs, study tips, film reviews and probably other things I can't think of right now will likely comprise most of what I have to lay down here. Mostly, I'm hoping to use this as a place to say what's interesting and on my mind, notable and worth sharing and possibly find other people doing this and people who might enjoy listening.
Some more things about me... I'm a Canadian student studying in South Africa and I spend my free time ballroom dancing, baking, crocheting, napping, reading and listening to music. I have disdain for insects, scrambled eggs and flip-flops. I hope to work in healthcare one day, back home in BC Canada. I can't think of what else to put here but as I post more I'll share more about me. Thanks (is that what you're supposed to say at the end of a post, idk, but it feels the most polite)

Duelo migratorio

A Double Birthday and Friends
My wife’s friend and I have decided to share our birthday celebration this year. Our birthdays are but two days apart and will all the friends in between it’s a win-win. And in this economy, plagued by inflation and, yet again, the threat of recession and joblessness, paying once for two dear friends is cost saving.
He’s jovial in a sort of self satisfied way. He’s been turning around his life lately. Got laid off for the price of half a million, tossed his girlfriend of nine years to the side and is enjoying the lofty experience of living alone once again. Why’d he ever stop, he almost asks me.
I scroll through my messaging app to see who I should invite based on who I actually talk to. More than half are out of the country. That is the price you pay for living abroad most of your life, changing places, changing languages, rebuilding each time. I have many friends though. I think of them often. Those stand out faces, opinions, charms. The wild moments and quiet evenings. It’s a kind of nostalgia for something that never was; the soft yearning to discuss everyday things with them. I wonder what Takeshi would say about my job woes. What would Emma suggest I do to better enjoy the next party? What dry and almost invisible joke would Ida mumble between pints of beer?
She looks at me with compassion, the kind that is a stretch of the imagination. Because she hasn’t lived like I have, but it’s not hard to imagine the pain and loss of friends nearby. How did my parents do it without smartphones, instant messaging and video calls with the tap of a digital button? They had landlines. We have unlimited data plans.
I am equipped for long distance friendship. My childhood prepared me. Immigrant parents and all - sending me back to the old country every summer to connect me to the family and the friends.
He looks at me through my almost good Spanish and I think he gets what I mean. The new friends here will be more than enough to celebrate and I love them dearly. I came to love them quickly too. It’s a thing that happens to foreigners, guests. The vulnerability of being alone in a new country makes you open to kindred souls and you catch each other’s friendships faster. No one has the time to wait years to become friends. You need people now.
Scrolling downwards through time and conversations I saw all the people I’d like to invite and all those I actually could. The pixels of the carefully crafted messaging app represented human connection that crossed borders, years and experiences of my life.
