so i decided to start something in my chronic unemployment in the hopes of becoming more employable: i made a newsletter!
a friend got me onto substack and i’ll be posting newsletters on there, on an ad hoc basis, discussing the Gothic, contemporary literary theories, and culture. there’ll be articles, book reviews and more, it’ll be developed as it grows. if there is anything you would like to see explored, please let me know!
so if you’re interested in contemporary literature and theory, please go and have a look at The Wandering Scholar on substack, and click subscribe if you want to be notified when i post!

About halfway through The Odyssey now; I got snared by the story last night and read like 130 (out of 300) pages in one sitting.

homeric epithets have my heart.
rosy-fingered dawns and wine-dark seas. bronze-armoured achaeans on sea-cleaving ships advancing towards the many-towered troy. the swift-footed achilles, great-hearted patroculus, flaming-haired menelaus. and don't forget the divinely-named gods; the cloud-gatherer zeus, ox-eyed athena, earth-shaking poseidon, silver-footed thetis, mercury-swift iris, soft-cheeked aphrodite.
these words will always be long-shadowed and sweet-savored.

nothing more romantic than you getting pinned to a bookshelf by your academic rival, both of you staring daggers at each other, restraint breaking, the book in your hand dropping with a thud as you both let impulse dominate instead of logic and reason,, love’s indeed a fallacy. checkmate.

just finished two chapters of the third book of midnight's children for today. i've planned out the reading schedules for tomorrow. will try to follow them. however, the catch with modernist books is, they make you dive into the throes of imagination after every line, hence it's almost impossible to gulp them down/read a lot at one go, hence not trying to take in a lot or else i'll be overwhelmed.🍒🏳️‍🌈

after much consideration/thingking, i've decided to maintain a manual blog/account/record/diary of my daily thinking notes, specially the ones i get while reading books. it'll be messy and that's okay. that's the whole idea of taking it down on a page, so that they stop messing with my brains. i started it from today and it has been very helpful already. i'm pouring down my unedited versions of chains of thoughts entangled with each other and as i sit to pen them down, several others related to the same subject matter, show up and get added there which really increases my confidence to think more. enough talk. here's a glimpse of the notes. 🍀🌿

[also, to increase the span of my concentration in these difficult times and stop phone addiction, i got the idea of an app named forest, several times on this platform and today, finally i downloaded it and it is amazing and already helping me to focus more on my tasks. thanks tumblr! this site has been the best thing ever since second wave of corona hit our lives!] 🌱🍁

I Turn the Carriage, Yoke and Set Off - Traditional Chinese Poem (anon, tr. Burton Watson & Arthur Waley)
I turn the carriage, yoke and set off, far far, over never-ending roads. The autumn winds shake the hundred grasses, On every side, how desolate and bare! Among all I meet, nothing of the past; Their strangeness hastens the coming of old age. Prosperity and decay, each have their season; success is bitter when it is so late in coming! Man is not made of metal or stone; He cannot far prolong the days of his fate. Swiftly he follows in the wake of change; Fame is the only treasure that endures.

so Cursed was a good little collection of rewritten fairy-tales & children's stories, my favourite was probably 'Wendy, Darling'
now onto Mexican Gothic, let's see if it's worth the hype!

Instead of working on our assignments me and my friends are discussing what we’ll wear when we help the legitimate king reclaim the throne. So far these are our favorites.

Title:Desecrated
TRIGGER WARNING FOR RAPE, SELF HARM, VIOLENCE, PROFANITY, & MISCARRIAGE
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
You fucking lowlife bastard.
Look what you’ve done.
Look at the damage you caused.
My lover was taken advantage of.
She’s been shaken to her core.
She’s broken and angry
With herself for
What happened to her.
You approached her.
She’s said no countless times
But you didn’t care.
You deliberately violated her.
You didn’t respect her.
You didn’t honor her.
You didn’t even bother to
Check up on her.
She’s been treated horribly
And in the worst ways possible.
She lost what she can never
Get back from you.
You stole something from her
And crushed it into so many pieces.
You tore her apart
Inside and outside.
She screamed in pain.
She was hurt and
Left in a state
Of agony.
You are nothing but
A fucking monster.
You may have history with her
But you don’t deserve to have her back.
Not after what you did to her.
Now, she’s suffering
From your disgusting act of
Assault which cannot be undone.
To make it worse, she vomits
Every morning.
She’s in a constant state
Of nausea.
I know you caused her to be with child
From your shameless, vile act.
To top it off, a child is gonna
Suffer with its mother.
She didn’t ask for this
And nor did I.
I’m coming over to beat your ass
Right here, right now.
Seeing you bruised and battered
Leaves me in satisfaction.
I’ve gotten my rightful
Retribution for her.
You don’t deserve her
Or your love child.
If anything, I’d be
A better father and a better husband than you.
I’d be the man you can’t.
Weeks later, it gets worse.
There isn’t a heartbeat.
None at all.
The child is dead.
Fucking dead.
This isn’t fair.
This wasn’t meant to be.
Blood trails between her legs
Leaving her to cramp
On the ground in
Great excruciating turmoil.
I hate you even more
For forcing yourself onto her.
She’s in more pain
Than ever.
I can’t bear to see
A beautiful soul tormented
By this hellish trauma
She was forced to endure.
Enough was enough for her until
The moment she sliced
Into her beautiful skin
And let her blood flow onto the floor.
Finding her unconscious
And unresponsive left me shattered.
I lost two people
And it fucking hurts.
You’ll never know
The pain of losing
A woman and a baby
That could’ve been yours.
Even if the child wasn’t mine
By blood relations, I still
Cared greatly for him or
Her even if he or she hadn’t been born.
My world is no longer whole.
It’s unbearable to live in.
I can’t stand it
Any longer.

to the strangers i met in bookstores: i see you and i simply adore you. from the old man who obsess over cowboy and wild west stories, howdy dear sir. to the little girl with a collection of beatrix potter books in her hand, and to the grey lady with her refined tastes on literature, i wish you all well. i terribly miss hunting books for hours and ofc meeting unlikely, odd strangers even if the perspective’s all in third person *sighs* oh the pleasant experience is like something from an indie film, relatively mundane yet magical at the same time

the first class of 6.2[modern indian literature in translation] speaks about the dominant and residual aspects of a literary period on the context of modern indian poetry.
it also mentions the transgression of usage of poetic diction in the same field changing the presentation of poetic convention as our times and experiences change. one of the major features of the modern indian literary connotations was to keep it simple by doing away with abstractions, so that poetry doesn’t become the 'other thing' and therefore the imagery conveying the conventional terms had to be changed.
